Court seducer La Belle Coeur has met her match in Tristan, a Knight of the Round Table unafraid of blood-or lust. Joining together to combat a werewolf wizard and sworn enemy of Arthur, they must put their lives on the line-while coming to grips with the rising heat between them.
Twelfth in the Mageverse erotic paranormal-romance series with the vampires, the Magus and Maja of King Arthur's court as the good guys protecting our world. This one sees the resolution of Belle Coeur and Tristan's relationship.
The Story There is active conflict between the Mages and the Direkind. Warlock is playing up the tricks to force a war between the two in his bid for world domination. You could almost feel sorry for Dice, the motorcycle gang leader, Warlock changes and corrupts with some new magics. Almost.
These new magics make it possible to confuse both the Dire wolves and the Magi as Warlock stirs the pot with corruption.
My Take It feels like Knight is losing her passion in this series. The last story, Master of Smoke was pretty lame and this one is only somewhat improved. It's too mechanical. As though Knight is just going through the motions. Miranda, Warlock's runaway daughter, appears with her contributions and there's some promise for her in the future. But it's just surface.
It could be because some of the good guys are lost, but… Arthur gets implicated in a nasty plot but Knight doesn't go very far with it; it's too easily resolved.
The Cover The cover has a split personality with bare-chested and cloaked Tristan standing forthright, his sword held before him hands clasping its hilt. It's possible that the purple flourish of fluid fabric to his right is part of his cape but the golden corner makes me wonder.
I suspect the title refers to Warlock since he seems to be a Master of Shadows hiding behind his concealing magic.
I like this series and the world that's created here. The twist on the Arthurian myth is fun and I'm deep enough into the series that I'm curious to see where everything will end up as our big bad guy is getting bolder. Warlock is becoming more daring and is determined to set the werewolves against the Magi, his plot is getting deeper and casualties on both sides are occuring. Arthur and his knights as well as the the women of the court are on high alert and determined to end things once and for all.
Look this series is the sort of simple easy read that always feels like a good palate cleanser in between more complex novels. I'm far enough into the series that I want to see where everything goes, but I do feel like the romance between the couples is suffering a bit in this book. I liked Belle and Tristan, but for all of their antagonism to start things off we never really got to see them truly fall for each other and see the connection. It kinda just happens. This story is really more about what's going on with Warlock and the ramping up of the antagonism between the werewolves and Arthur. But getting Warlock's daughter to finally to be pushed out of hiding and having her connect with the Magi, it feels like things might be ramping up a bit.
Really enjoyed this latest addition to the Mageverse series. Belle and Tristan are mature characters who carry a lot of emotional baggage, so their relationship felt very grownup. I like the world building in this series a lot, and there's plenty of that, too. Very action-packed with a big cast of characters. This series has a bit of an epic feel, with a big, over-arching plot line. If you're into that kind of book, the Mageverse series is a good choice for paranormal readers.

I've gotten really lazy about goodreads reviews I rarely write them any more. I'm going to try to review every book I read this year. Look, these books are trashy paranormal romance, and I like it. Knight may actually be my favorite trash pnr author. The whole series is light, fun with a reasonably okay if a little incoherent over-arching plot. Tristan and Belle were always going to be a thing, and I enjoyed this installment, even though it wasn't my favorite of the Mageverse books. Would recommend to the right friend.
LOVED IT! Tons of "Looney Toon" references which only added to the humor riddled throughout this read. As usual strong main characters, and with the aid of fleshy secondary characters push this magical, intense action packed story along.
I liked it but it dragged a bit,. The love scenes were raunchy and longer than they needed to be. Warlock is getting frustrating. Other than that, I like the world building and would read the next book to a see if Warlock finally goes down.
Master of Shadows was another great love story, this one between Tristan & Belle. Looking forward to the last book, Master of Darkness. I’ll be glad to see Werewolf bite the dust.
Master of Shadows by Angela Knight Paranormal Romance – Aug. 2nd, 2011 4 ½ stars
Werewolves and Magekind battle in this powerful new installment of the Mageverse series. This story was straightforward and can be easily read by itself.
La Belle is known as the official court seducer. She awakens men to their magical heritage by sleeping with them which releases their potential. However, her job is dangerous because if the men cannot handle the influx of power, they go insane at which point she must kill them swiftly. When one of her new recruits named Davon is accused of murdering an innocent werewolf, she knows that Davon cannot be guilty because she would have sensed madness in him. She finds herself investigating with the handsome if very stuck up and famous knight, Tristan. They soon discover that Davon was spelled into killing the poor young werewolf by an evil werewolf named Warlock. But will they be able prove that Davon is innocent before the revenged minded werewolves start a war?
To add to their troubles, Belle and Tristan have never gotten along well together. Tristan understands the need for Belle’s position at court, but he disapproves and secretly wants her for himself. As they race to prove Davon's innocence, they also find themselves trying to defend themselves against a Warlock who is building his own evil army while trying to rescue a powerful werewolf witch named Miranda who happens to be Warlock's daughter. Can they defeat Warlock and save Davon and Marianda in time?
This was a quick and sensual read. I really liked Belle. She is independent and doesn't let Tristan push her around! I also liked how comfortable Belle is with her sensuality! In contrast, Tristan seems aloof but he hides his deep passion. When the tow main characters finally ‘get together’ it is scorching. I liked how the author explores Davon's point of view. Davon is a doctor and a healer but not a destroyer. He is tortured by the knowledge that he has killed an innocent even if he was manipulated magically. I also liked reading about Miranda. She is on the run. A good person/werewolf, that happens to have an evil and blood thirsty father but fights against being a victim. This book also explores how Belle and Tristan each have their own backgrounds and how each of their friends try to warn or prevent their relationship from progressing because they fear the other person will hurt them. Both characters have issues and are lonely souls that actually have a lot in common. I enjoyed their developing relationship. The storyline is very involving and easy to read. As the characters grow and familiar ones return, the depth of the Mageverse keeps expanding. I also liked that this book wraps up tightly and I hope to read more about Davon and the intriguing witch Miranda!
Magical and seductive this is already one of my favorites in the Mageverse series.

Tristan is one of King Arthur’s knights. He has been avoiding the court seducer Belle Coeur for months. She might have the job of making mages but she cannot stop her heart from wanting Tristan. When Tristan comes to tell her she has another mission, Belle is not thrilled to see him. Direkind needs them to investigate a murder; she reluctantly agrees to go. She really likes Tristan’s body but just wishes he had a better personality—one that didn’t detest her.
Belle drives Tristan nuts. He had wanted her for months. He was avoiding her and taking more practice lessons with Arthur to avoid his feelings for her. Now together on a mission to save Arthur from being falsely accused of murder, he isn’t sure he can hold off his feelings for Belle. He hopes he can get this mission done before his body and heart betray him.
Master of Shadows by Angela Knight has all of Mageverse on the brink of war with the Direkind. There has been a murder and Arthur has been set up to take the fall for it. There are politics involved and this book does rely heavily on previous books, so I would not call this book a stand alone. It is however a wonderful, smart, sexy addition to the Mageverse world.
I found myself sinking into the characters of Belle and Tristan. So far most of the court seducers we have met have been male; it was a new twist to see a woman in the role for once. Tristan has a very sad past. I really wanted him to find happiness and love. This is a new and inventive twist on the Tristan love story we know from fairy tales. I love the wolves as well. There is so much to this book that a review can’t do it complete justice, other than to say that this is an amazing addition to this series and it is setting the stage for a huge show down that will change everyone’s lives forever. I am breathlessly awaiting the next in the Mageverse series—I want to know what happens next and what turn this war will take in the future.
In all honesty, I had a hard time working up interest in this book. The biggest reason is, there's an overall story arc and to be honest, I don't care. Maybe if the author interspersed entries that were just... I dunno... romances with no intersection with whatever bad nasty super-psycho that's causing trouble with the mageverse at the time... Kinda like Diana and the fairy king whose name escapes me. At this point, the bad nasty is a psychotic dire wolf whose sole purpose of existence is to take out Arthur if he goes psycho. Guess who went psycho first. Eventually (after maybe another half dozen books), a big battle will ensue, Merlin will pop in to save the day, and order will be restored - until the next psycho pops up.
Enough about that. Bella is a court seducer, which means exactly what it sounds like - she's one who gets sent out to boink potential latents into unleashing their power. She's tired, so she volunteers to go out and actually fight. She gets assigned Tristan, who apparently has issues with her job. They spend time popping in from place to place, chasing a killer and trying to convince the dire wolves they're being manipulated. Unfortunately, a person is smart; people are panicky dumb animals. Having the ability to shift into a wolf doesn't change that. Eventually, a big battle ensues, bad nasty nearly gets his arse handed to him by a dragon, a half sidhe, a sidhe/elemental, and a dire wolf/elemental. He of course, teleports away to ensure another book. Oh yeah; there was romance, sex, long discussions about the past that haunts Tristan, etc. If it weren't for that annoying story arc that will not be resolved, I'd rate it higher, but that story arc made it hard for me to get interested in reading the book, so it lost a point.
This is one of the stories form the Magaverse series I was really looking forward to. Seeing both Belle and Tristan through the books made me curious about their HEA. And I was not disappointed.
Belle and Tristan are both good characters, I rather liked them. Throughout the book, they started to fall for each other, while fighting evil at the same time. The forced proximity of being partners is the reason they became lovers in the first place. Before that they were doing whatever they could to stay away from each other. Belle's opinion of Tristan was colored by his playboy status, and Tristan didn't think highly of her court seducer job.
Both of them had issues that stem from their past. Belle was forced to kill some of her lovers when they went blood mad after receiving their gifts. And Tristan is still hurting from Isolde's betrayal (a nice twist of the legend).
I like the fact that there is a story arc that spreads through the books. But it seems like the people of Magaverse just can't seem to catch a break. They managed to fight off one ancient enemy (the first arc), and now there's someone else who's after them.
Anyway, a good book, a one I enjoyed reading. It's even better if you compare it to the previous book in the series which was pretty weird and not to my taste.
This was a fast read. The new truebonded couple will be Tristan and Belle. This is not surprising as it is their story. Not surprising is the number of deaths in this book either. Ms. Knight appears to be increasing collateral damage with each book she writes. I'd really like to know if Merlin ever comes back. I think it would be interesting if he comes back and whips Warlock's ass. Merlin's contingency plan just went south really bad. I still like Ms. Knights books but this one was just mediocre for me. I didn't feel any sorry for Tristan and I should have. I didn't really care for Belle either, even though she's decent.
I'm anticipating the next book to be about Miranda and Justice. I hope that one will at least have hot sex. They are werewolves so I do expect a bit more animalistic sex. This book didn't feel like a complete story. Instead, I felt as though it was a bridge or set up for the next book. I kept waiting for a big reveal and each time, the reveal made me go, "oh,that's it?"
I recommend this book to those who love Ms. Knights books. I also recommend it to those who enjoy a bit Knights of the Round table references.
I had so been looking forward to Tristan and Belle's book and it was as good as I could have hoped! I wish Angela was a more prolific writer, I hate only getting 1 or 2 books from her a year as I LOVE them! 1000 years ago Merlin came to earth (yes he was real) He wasn't a sorcerror, he was an alien being from another universe. There really was, and is a King Arthur and the knights of the round table, and they are vampires! They were humans who competed for the right to drink from Merlin's grail and become immortal protectors of mortal earth. They and their couterpart females, the Magi, witches, have been preventing wars and terrorism for over a thousand years.
Merlin also created the race of the Direkind, Shapeshifters, immune to magic who could defeat the Magekind if they ever went crazy and tried to take over the world. One problem, It's the head of the Direkind, Warlock who goes off the deep end and tries to take over the world. Who'd have thunk it?
So, Tristan and La Belle Coeur join together to fight the evil Warlock, solve the murders of a direkind boy and save the world! What could be better!
I think this was the best Mageverse book so far. The past couple have been so-so, but this was as good as, if not better than, the first ones. This is Belle and Tristan's story, and deals with his old issues of Isolde. They come together as a believable pair. The story also continues the ongoing issues with the werewolves not believing Warlock is back, and Arthur and the knights trying to stop him. Warlock conjours up a heck of a bad guy as well, out of an old poker playing biker. Of course, Warlock can't do his own evil deeds, he has to have someone do them for him. Miranda comes back in this story as well, and I think we'll see more of her in the next book. Lots of Arthur and Gwen, a little bit of Kel, and even some Smoke. Lots of old favorites in this one. Now that the wolves know Warlock is back, it will be interesting to see how they split and how the story moves forward. It was a fun read.
So normal I give higher ratings, but I just wasn't in to Belle and Tristan. I just couldn't get into the book as I usually would. One great thing was to see a lot of the Truebonded back because I love pretty much all of them (aside from Belle and Tristan). I felt that this book was kinda just thrown in there because Tristan needed someone.
::Spoiler:: I was really upset when Bors died. He seemed so great and now we'll never get to see more of him. ::End Spoiler::
Well, I hope the next one is better. And I hope it comes out soon. I think part of it was all the waiting between books puts me out of certain series that I really like. When I finally get the next one I put off reading it because I'm just not as into the books as I was when the last one came out. Alright, well, see you guys on the next review.
A brutal murder of a child brings Belle and Tristan to South Carolina to investigate. The battle between Warlock and Arthur escalates with Warlock framing Magekind (and Arthur specifically) with horrific murders to bring Direkind together to eliminate Magekind forever. I really like this take on Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table mixed with witches, vampires and werewolves. It's a unique concept that works. I can't wait to read Master of Darkness to see Warlock get his ass kicked once and for all. It'll be interesting to see how Ms. Knight brings werewolf/witch Miranda and werewolf William Justice together to fight the ultimate evil...their werewolf elder, Warlock.
At last! A novel about another of the Round Table Knights! Tristan and Belle Coeur are very good characters, and the interplay between them is both hilarious and poignant. Knight takes greater care in developing their relationship than she has with some of the others, giving their emotional baggage and centuries of life experience the respect it deserves. The novel had some heartbreaking moments apart from Tristan and Belle, particularly concerning Bors and the new recruit Davon. As for the continuation of the Warlock/Dire Wolf hostilities against the Magekind, it is a chilling study on mob mentality and manipulation. Warlock has been studying the Hitler playbook.
One somewhat jarring note was having the Round Table knight Kay appear alive and participating in an attack against Warlock's Beast when novel 6 tells the sad events of his death in WWII.
I love the Mageverse books, and this one was really nice, although the sex wasn't as hot as I anticipated...Angela Knight can do LOTS better! The plot was very violent with lots of casualties, that's true. But it was thrilling, and the cliffhanger definitely makes me want to delve into the next book ASAP- that one will be about Miranda and Justice, who have great angry chemistry between them, and who knows: since both are werewolves, maybe those two will BURN THE SHEETS! But I very much liked Tristan and Belle together- I just would have loved to see a little bit more raw, animalistic passion, but that's just me...
Oooh a big yummy for Tristan and Belle! I loved this latest in the Knights of the roundtable, Magaverse series. I still feel, hands down, this is a great story line. The knights are Vampires and their ladies are witches. Together they keep humanity safe. Merlin's gift...So neat.
Tristan and Belle are so absolutely perfect for each other. Their banter is extremely amusing. It's their foreplay. AS always Angela packs her stories full of arousing sex scenes. Can't wait for the next!
I liked this book in the series the best. I think it's because of all of the heroes in Knight's mageverse, Tristan is the most flawed. Knight continues to get better with each book and the series arc is becoming more defined. My only complaint (but clearly not enough to take away a star for it... Yet) is the idea that Majae HAVE to be female and Magi male and therefore only way to truly be in Truebond is to be straight. I'd love to see a bit more creativity to show how same sex couples could be Truebonded. The diversity is there in Knight's world, it would be great to see it expanded.
Things are really progressing for the Magekind. Warlock is unveling his plan to destroy them, and things really come to a head in this book. There is quite a bit of action in this book. But still plenty of romance and sex between Tristan and Belle. You get to see plenty of viewpoints and things progress pretty quickly.
I enjoyed the interaction between Belle and Tristan, and really liked how they got together. Some funny moments in the book help lighten the tension caused by the coming war.
As we draw closer to the end of this series, Ms. Knight finally brings us back to the MageKind couples that first interested me.
I loved that even though Belle and Tristan had known each other for, like, ever, we had a good backstory as to why they had never once clicked as a couple. And that made it an interesting story. I still don't think that Belle's back story could have been overlooked by Tristan, but we'll go with the flow.
Overall, a solid addition to the series. We learned more about the big, bad evil, we saw two characters learn to love each other, I was satisfied.
La Belle Coeur is a master court seducer. But she hates her job after 1000's of years. She wants Tristan to think better of her, she hates that he thinks of her as the whore of Avalon. Now Tristan and Belle are partners going after werewolves gone bad. They now have to prove that there is a werewolf wizard to the werewolves who believe in mankind. Now it is up to Arthur and the Round Table to fight for proof of a crazy wizard before they are in a war and one of there own is executed.
