In Exotic Betting, the horseplayer takes a colorful wagering ride by learning to maximize profits by betting on a multitude of exotic wagers including the daily double, exacta, trifecta, quinella, superfecta, pick 3, 4, and 6.
I got this book as a freebie at a dinner last fall at the Breeder's Cup, the World Thoroughbred Championship races. Unlike most free books, this one's a really good read if you're interested in the advanced betting possibilities offered at today's race tracks and OTB parlors. The book explains things simply and clearly, even about the forms you have to fill out for the IRS when you hit it big. So if you're headed for a day at the track, and want to make some intelligent bets on an exacta, trifecta, pick six, etc., taking a quick look through this book could be a big help. You'll sound like a pro at the window, and have a better time with the ponies.
Crist offers some good formulae for putting tickets together for pick 3s,4s,6s as well as trifectas and superfectas at the racetrack. This not a book about handicapping, but a book about betting theory and bankroll management, and it's a pretty good one. Crist spends a lot more on complex pick 6 strategies than I ever would, but his math is solid. What really attaches me to this book, however, is Crist's overall view of the races not really as a cash-prize lottery of sorts, but as an incredibly multilayered complicated puzzle to analyze & attempt to solve. It's exactly how I view horse handicapping & why I enjoy it!
One of the more useful books on horse racing I've read. He explains multi-race wagers well (I think they're his specialty), and it's good to read if the more exotic stuff seems a little intimidating and you want to learn more.
