44 books5 followersBranko Čegec is Croatian poet, essayist, critic and founder of 'Meandar' publishing house.
He graduated Yugoslav language and literature and Comparative literature from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb. During his study, in 1978, he worked as a lector and corrector first in the magazine K, edited by the students of the Comparative literature, than part-time for the publishing house August Cesarec and journal Pitanja. He also edited literature in youth newspaper and journals Polet and Pitanja.
From 1985 until the end of 1989 he was the Editor-in-chief of the journal Quorum. From 1989 until the end of 1990 he was the Editor-in-chief of the journal for culture Oko. Lather on he was an editor in the publishing house Mladost.
He founded his own publishing house Meandar in 1992, which has operated since summer 1993. First he worked as director and chief editor of Meandar but now he is the chief editor of all editions.
In last ten years he signed more than 350 titles. In 1998 he initiated the founding of Croatian Independent Publishers, economy association of small and medium publishing houses. At the same time he was elected as the president of the Board of the Association where he stayed until 2000 when, called on by the Minister of culture, he become his assistant in the Department for cultural development and creativity. He coordinated following fields: books and publishing, film and new media. During his mandate his authority was extended to the field of theatre, music and visual arts. In the middle of the mandate he resigned from duties and returned to his own publishing house.
In 1999 he was elected for the president of the Board of Goranovo proljeće. In 2002 he founded The Croatian Book Centre and in 2003 the magazine Tema.
He was awarded the Goran for young poets in 1980, the 7 sekretara SKOJ-a prize in 1983, the Kočićevo pero prize in 2007 and the Kvirin prize in 2008.
He stayed in Ljubljana on a month as a scholarship from Društvo slovenskih pisateljev in 1986. He translated around ten books from Slovenian language.
His poetry has been translated into the French, Slovenian, German, English, Italian, Hungarian, Polish, Lithuanian, Macedonian.
