In 1993 his novel Nicolas Eymerich, inquisitore won the Urania Award, which was established by Urania, Italy’s main science fiction magazine, with the aim of discovering new talent in the field. Urania published other novels of the series in the following years: Le catene di Eymerich ("Eymerich’s Chains", 1995), Il corpo e il sangue di Eymerich ("Eymerich’s Body and Blood", 1996), Il mistero dell'inquisitore Eymerich ("Eymerich’s Mystery", 1996), Cherudek (1997), Picatrix, la scala per l'inferno ("Picatrix, the Stairway to Hell", 1998), Il castello di Eymerich ("Eymerich’s Castle", 2001), Mater terribilis (2002). Most of the last ones were however first published as hardcover.
Nicolas Eymerich is a real historical character, member of the order of the Dominicans and inquisitor in the Spanish Inquisition. He was born in 1320 in Girona, Catalonia, and died in 1399. Evangelisti’s interpretation of his character is a cruel, ruthless, haughty, restless man, who acts mercilessly to protect the Catholic Church against perceived menaces of natural or supernatural origin. At the same time he shows an outstanding intelligence and a deep culture in his actions. In the novels of the series he investigates the mysterious phenomena of Medieval Europe, thus subtly influencing many of the historical events of that epoch; on many occasions the solution of the riddles comes up from stories which are narrated along with the main plot, normally set in the present and in the future. Evangelisti's atmospheres are normally dark, nightmarish, haunting.
Another success of 1999, also translated in several languages, is the Magus trilogy, a romanticized biography of the famous Middle Ages prophecies writer Nostradamus. The three novels, Il presagio ("The Omen"), L’inganno ("The Deceit") and L'abisso ("The Abyss") sold 100,000 copies in Italy.
Evangelisti's novels are greatly appreciated in France (where he won several literary awards), Spain, Germany and Portugal. He is currently the director of the Carmilla magazine. In the last years he has written some works which show his love for heavy metal music, namely the short stories collection Metallo urlante (referring to the French magazine Metal Hurlant) and the novels Black Flag and Antracite: they are set during the American Civil War and feature a new character, Pantera, a palero shaman. One of his latest novels, Noi saremo tutto ("We Shall Be All"), spans several decades of the last century, exploring the life of Eddie Florio, a gangster, against the background of the history of the trade unions and the workers' battles for civil rights.
Mexico is the setting for his next two novels, Il collare di fuoco ("The Fire Collar"), which was published in November 2005 and Il collare spezzato ("The Broken Collar", October 2006). In 2007 La luce di Orione was released, the ninth title in the Eymerich series, followed in 2010 by Rex tremendae maiestatis.
Tortuga, a novel about pirates of the Caribbean, was published in 2008.

Cercavo un romanzo che avesse come protagonista una figura affascinante per me: Michele di Nostradamus.
“Magus” di Valerio Evangelisti era citato nella bibliografia di Wikipedia. Ho letto le recensioni su amazon e alcune erano molto negative: pesante, farraginoso, prolisso, troppi personaggi… l’estratto però mi era piaciuto, per cui l’ho acquistato lo stesso.
Ho cominciato a leggerlo e non mi sono fermata fino alle 4 di mattina. Per fortuna non sono neanche a metà, c’è da divertirsi per un bel po’: quando l’avrò finito ricomincerò dalla prima pagina, come faccio sempre con le letture che mi appassionano.
Come si fa a trovare “pesante” un romanzo così?
Troppi personaggi? Un romanzo storico che si rispetti (quello che, per usare un’espressione un po’ logora, riesce a diventare “l’affresco di un’epoca”) ne deve avere tanti per essere ciò che è. In ogni epoca, compresa la nostra, padroni e servi, vittime e carnefici, conformisti e ribelli si esprimono in una gamma di personaggi tipici di quel periodo: eliminarne un po’ vorrebbe dire impoverire il romanzo, annacquarlo per renderlo più appetibile alle, ehm… menti vergini.
L’autore di Magus ha avuto il coraggio di non farlo e ce li presenta in modo estremamente vivido: studenti, prostitute, inquisitori, signorotti, speziali, pseudosapienti, ebrei, ugonotti, avventurieri… si sente che dietro c’è un immenso studio, ma il risultato non è affatto “pesante”: anzi, si può ben definire brioso. Alcuni personaggi poi, come la prima moglie di Nostradamus, riescono a sorprendere e commuovere.
Chi trancia giudizi così, forse non ha mai letto un romanzo storico vero. È abituato ai polpettoni cucinati secondo la solita ricetta: lui, lei, il cattivo, arrivano i nostri, fine della storia.

Daha önce hiç asıl karakterin düşmanı kadar kötü olduğu bir hikâye okumamıştım. Bu kitapta resmen kötüler savaşıyor. Nostradamus'un gerçekte de bu kadar kötü bir insan olup olmadığını bilmiyorum ama umarım değildir. Umarım karısına yaptığı eziyetler (her ne kadar o da sütten çıkmış ak kaşık değilse de) gerçek değildir mesela. Tarihî şahısların -dünyaya mâl oldukları için sanırım- her anlamda "iyi örnek" olmasını bekliyorum çünkü. Bu kitapta -beklediğim gibi- kehanetler yoktu. Nostradamus'un doktor ve eczacı olarak başarıları, eski bir Yahudi olduğunu unutturma çabaları ve hırsının yönlendirdiği yaşamı hikâyeleştirilmiş. Ara vermeden serinin ikinci kitabı Aldatma'ya başlıyorum. =)

Troppo lungo e per alcuni aspetti ripetitivo.
Ciònonostante mi è piaciuto molto il personaggio di Jumelle (Anne Ponsarde), seconda moglie di Nostradamus (per il libro).
Ho adorato le sue parole: "Se io dicessi che la vocazione di un uomo è la paternità, tutti riderebbero. Ma per una donna il trattamento è diverso. Senza maternità, non esiste nemmeno."
Una concezione molto vecchia della donna che, purtroppo, è ancora di moda nella nostra società maschilista e patriarcale.
Jumelle ha altre uscite, inoltre è intelligente e si è "fatta" da sola, imparando e usando la propria intelligenza. Sempre però protetta da un uomo.
Ho letto le prime due parti ma poi alla terza ho mollato il colpo, non c'era moltissimo che mi prendesse e mi invogliasse a terminarlo, per cui ho saltato qualche pagina.

Nel 1999 Valerio Evangelisti abbandona provvisoriamente il personaggio di Eymerich e scrive, a distanza di pochi mesi l'uno dall'altro, i romanzi IL PRESAGIO, L'INGANNO e L'ABISSO. In realtà si tratta dei tre volumi di un'unica opera poderosa: MAGUS, IL ROMANZO DI NOSTRADAMUS. Un centinaio di capitoli, un migliaio di pagine. E un successo immediato: oltre 100.000 copie vendute in Italia, l'acquisto da parte degli editori di tre continenti. In realtà, Valerio Evangelisti ha scritto il romanzo su commissione della sua casa editrice, interessata a sfruttare i timori e le speranze suscitati dall'anno 2000. Tuttavia non ha ceduto troppo alle tentazioni della narrativa di facile consumo. Il rigore storico della narrazione, che pure rende esplicito omaggio al feuilleton (l'edizione italiana dell'opera è dedicata a Ponson du Terrail, quella francese a Michel Zévaco), è pari, se non superiore, a quello del ciclo di Eymerich. Le concessioni alle superstizioni che circondano le profezie di Nostradamus (su cui Valerio Evangelisti è decisamente scettico) sono scarse, per non dire nulle. Il protagonista stesso della storia, in palese violazione delle regole della letteratura di massa, risulta complesso e, almeno inizialmente, non molto simpatico. La vita di Nostradamus, fedele alle fonti, e immaginaria solo quando queste sono lacunose, viene inquadrata nello scenario di un secolo di profonde trasformazioni, culturali e sociali. Michel de Nostredame vi appare come l'interprete del cambiamento in corso, ma anche come la vittima di lacerazioni e conflitti molto più forti di lui. Tra cui, soprattutto, la terrificante guerra di religione che ha per teatro la Francia cinquecentesca, di cui i tre volumi seguono puntigliosamente la progressione. Non manca un versante fantastico, né un versante per qualche verso filosofico (la lotta di Nostradamus contro il mago malvagio Ulrico di Magonza, che intende sradicare dal mondo l'elemento femminile, si svolge tutta in una dimensione metafisica rispondente alle cosmogonie del XVI secolo e dei precedenti). Ma quello che prevale è il quadro, fosco e terribile, di un secolo insanguinato.

March 25, 2020I read this book in the Dutch translation. It could never, on not any moment, convince me that it was worth the paper it was printed on. I admit that I chose the book by its titel. And yes, the first chapter made me read on. But from then on it goes from bad to worse. Any novel has a story. But this collection words never gives the impression that there is a story behind. The young live of Nostradamus is the thread througout this letter mash. Pointless and senseless details are taking over. And Nostradamus opponent behaves like a headless death chicken and jumps from pillar to post without any sense for the non existing story.
It is a boring book. And yet, I read it till the end. That is why it got 2 stars from me. But I still wonder why I read it complete. Maybe I was hoping that the story would begin anyhow on some late pages ? Or I was too lazy to find another book ?
To end with a small positive point, there is a lot of history and historical details in this book. They are never explained or commented, but with google in the neighborhood I have learned some historical things from this book.

Het sterk geromantiseerde verhaal over de historische figuur Nostradamus is geschreven in een boeiend plot dat wellicht een beetje afbreuk doet aan de feiten. Ondanks de fijne schrijfstijl van Evangelisti vond ik het vanwege het vrouwengeweld erg moeilijk om me met de hoofdpersoon te identificeren. Vrouwen worden in dit boek afgeschilderd als tweederangs wezens die óf hoer zijn, óf volgzame huisvrouw, en ten allen tijde geslagen en afgeblaft dienen te worden. Naar mijn smaak komt er iets te veel hoerenseks in het boek voor. In tegenstelling tot wat de titel doet vermoeden gaat dit boek niet over een enkele profetie, maar over de profeet. Het mysterie der profetiën houdt het boek lang interessant, maar wordt helaas niet ver uitgewerkt. Al met al vond ik het boek minder goed dan de vlotte schrijfstijl van Evangelisti mij had doen hopen.

Questo libro in realtà è una trilogia che racconta la vita di Nostradamus. E' quindi molto lungo (quasi 800 pagine) e leggerlo tutto insieme è un'impresa non leggerissima. Premesso questo, se vi piace lo stile di Evangelisti, andate a botta sicura. Se venite dalla saga di Eymerich ritroverete molte somiglianze, ma niente di intollerabile, anzi!
La cosa bella del libro è che percorre tutta la vita di Nostradamus, dalla sua giovinezza fino alla vecchiaia e vi ritroverete quindi spesso con "memorie" vere e proprie che riaffioreranno nella vostra mente.
4 stelle perché forse è un po' troppo prolisso e qualche pezzo avrebbe potuto tranquillamente restare fuori dal libro.
La cosa bella del libro è che percorre tutta la vita di Nostradamus, dalla sua giovinezza fino alla vecchiaia e vi ritroverete quindi spesso con "memorie" vere e proprie che riaffioreranno nella vostra mente.

На удивление колоритно. Это даже нельзя назвать фэнтези или магическим реализмом. Скорее очень красочная авторская переработка жизни Нострадамуса.
Автору дивно удалось передать атмосферу средневековья. Невежество, грязь, чума, войны, религиозная нетерпимость, зверства, разврат, костры инквизиции.
Главный герой - Мишель де Нотрдамм редкостная сволочь. Сайдовые персонажи все как один хороши. И, хотя картина, рисуемая писателем довольно неприглядна, а сюжет не блещет лихими поворотами, в целом роман очень вкусный. В основном за счет правильно созданной атмосферы и антуража.

Historical thriller it was indeed. Nicely woven with a bet far fetched norm of the days, but other then that it was a pleasure to read in easy writing.
Contradictory on the fact that the title of the book would imply the many prediction made, but instead to be more of the dramatic life style, embedded with a single or nearly two real made predictions. But nonetheless, a book that depicts a glance of elaborate fictional historical thriller, for any who appreciate such works.

All'inizio della lettura ero esaltatissima, la prima parte di questa "trilogia" è coinvolgente ed Evangelisti è un pozzo di cultura riguardo gli usi e costumi e la storia del 1500. Dopo però diventa troppo prolisso, troppo, troppo lungo. Mena il can per l'aia. Sono quasi ottocento pagine. Direi che con trecento in meno sarebbe stato un capolavoro, così è quasi una palla.

Ricostruzione storica da cinque stelle, trama e personaggi da una stella. La media e' tre stelle. Personaggi fastidiosi, narrazione lenta, tensione assente. Se volevo un libro di saggistica non leggevo un romanzo. Peccato

Redelijk teleurstellend boek. De omschrijving vergat het seksuele geweld te vermelden, dat toch behoorlijk prominent aanwezig was.

Romanzo di facile lettura, adatto alla stagione estiva. Gli riconosco una buona scorrevolezza e, mi pare, un'altrettanto buona ricostruzione storica, nonostante lo stile piuttosto piatto.
