Dans cet ouvrage, la mthode linguistique comparative est employe un dessein d'ensemble : l'analyse du vocabulaire propre aux grandes institutions dans les principales langues indo-europennes. Partant des correspondances entre les formes historiques, on cherche, au-del des dsignations, qui sont souvent divergentes, atteindre le niveau profond des significations qui les fondent, pour retrouver la notion premire de l'institution comme structure latente, enfouie dans la prhistoire linguistique. On jette ainsi une lumire nouvelle sur les fondements de maintes institutions du monde moderne, dans l'conomie, la socit, le droit, et la religion.
