In this book I learned that a caterpillar sheds it's skin 4 times before it is full grown.

Very basic little read, but that's perfect for the target age. Some words may be difficult, but they are topical and easily memorized. The picture of the caterpillar growing inside the egg was awesome and worth the read all by itself. I do with there had been a note at the end telling about this specific species of butterfly, as that would have been a good addition. Still, it was a good little book.

This book talked about different stages in the butterfly's life. It even told us where the eggs were laid and how the mother butterfly pushed out the eggs on flowers. I would have the students describe the stages of the butterfly's process.

Born to be a Butterfly by Karen Wallace (2000 or 2010)
Beginning Reader, 32 pages
The perfect book for curious little explorers, Born to be a Butterfly gives readers an in-depth look at the developmental stages of butterfly life from egg to full-fledged winged beauty. As a level one DK Reader, the book is a great beginning read for children using high frequency words. Karen Wallace also includes some vocabulary that is neatly boxed with an image and the vocabulary word, all of which are reviewed on the last page of the book. With ample white or sky blue space, the layout provides large print and clear photography, allowing the reader’s eye to focus on main points. With very detailed close-ups of caterpillars and butterflies, some children may not enjoy the not-so-cute images. However, to those favoring nature, science, and nonfiction, Born to be a Butterfly will be a delightful introduction into the butterfly world. Parents will also enjoy its sturdy cover, allowing for easy packing and the opportunity to take the text with on a butterfly walk. I would definitely booktalk the book to ages 4-8.

Don't forget that kids love learning about all the crazy things in nature and that books that explore our world can be great motivations for reading! This book has great pictures, showing each stage of transformation, and includes facts for a child's curious mind to get excited over.

There was a momma butterfly and she had a baby caterpillar and she ate and ate and ate and went into a chrysallis and turned into a butterfly and hunted for a mate that she found on a leaf and they flew away together and then more eggs and more butterflies - hundreds!

The author explains the lifecycle of butterflies using simple vocabulary and real nature pictures. It starts with adult butterflies laying their eggs. Then, it proceeds to show what happens after they hatch. Great book for scientific vocabulary.
