1863 Sabine Pass, TX. Boy promised his mother that he would runaway to freedom. Working on a boat near Sabine, TX, Boy sees his chance and jumps ship. Wounded in his escape, Boy is taken in by widow Mrs. Banks. Mrs. Banks, a northerner who opposes slavery, is forced to "buy" him in order to prevent his owner from taking Boy back to the ship. Mrs. Banks insists that Boy should pick a name for himself and nicknames him "Muddy Boy" Banks because he was covered in river mud when she found him. At first Muddy is determined not to make friends with anyone, but finds himself liking Mrs. Banks, Jo Bear and Dr. Murray. When Yankee ships come to Sabine Pass, Muddy is torn if the Yankees win he will be free, but what will happen to the people he has come to care about.

Interesting story leading up to the battle of Sabine Pass in which about 40 Confederate soldiers defeated over 600 Union soldiers.
