This chapter book is an excellent choice to share with children ages 6 to 10 who are ready to read independently.
The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
I noticed at the library I work at these books are extremely popular with the 6-10 year old. I thought i would give one a try. it is not any thing that is earth shatter or a great work of literature but it is funny and silly and I can see why kids enjoy them. The books reminds me a bit of the wayside school series.
This story is about a boy named A.J. who goes to a school with his friends named Emily, Michael, Ryan, and Andrea. They all go to the same school with a teacher who is named Ms. Roopy which dresses up like people or anything like a president. My opinion is that why did he get a teacher that dresses up like characters for example the president and any other person who is real or fake. My evidence is on page 5 which says “ All of a sudden some funny looking guy marched in the class room dress as a president “. The person who should read this book is my little sister named Zya who is in kindergarten and she is 5 years old and she loves learning how to read.
My kids love these, but I find myself constantly saying things like, “that wasn’t very nice was it?” And “we don’t call anyone dumbheads, okay?” This one also had a teacher who lifted her shirt to show the kids her tattoo over her bellybutton and later one of the kids lifts her shirt to prove the teacher’s identity. I just found that whole situation inappropriate. It would have been so easy to put that tattoo on her arm instead of
I guess I could look at this as an opportunity to teach my kids about appropriate touch and all that, but gosh.
I've only read book #3 so I missed the beginning of this series. This short chapter book was much fun as it explored the role of the librarian & her intense desire to pull students into the library with her unconventional methods.
The writing is very witty so even the adult (meaning me) found moments of great chuckle.
What I found a bit disheartening was the students use of the words "stupid" or "dumb" to refer to events or each other. Its not a reason not to read the book but it isn't really necessary.
Re-read in 2020 as part of my nostalgia-fest in times of boredom.
And now, for le quotes:
"'Fiction is what you get when you rub two things together.'" -- we Goodreads readers call those two things "imagination" and "talent".
"'Don't be silly,' Mrs. Roopy said. 'The dungeon is on the third floor.'" -- and that's the second time in the series that this has been mentioned. One more time, and I'm going to assume it's the author's true intention for us to conceive of a dungeon on the third floor in an elementary school.
This funny book is about a librarian and George Washington and Johnny Appleseed and Humpty Dumpty....or all they all the same person? And why did Humpty Dumpty's parents name him Humpty, anyway?
I find it hard to believe a professional teacher would show her second grade students her tattoo on her tummy. Is that what goes on in public school nowadays? lol
This is cute and brainless but definitely not deep. Good for reluctant readers.
4.5 stars based on the reading level this is intended for--early elementary school kids. I'll always have an appreciation for children's books; they're fun, can be light-hearted, and well... I just enjoy them, sprinkled between my other reads and while I'm working.
The school librarian, Mrs. Roopy, dresses up as various characters from books to get the second graders interested in reading. However, they're more interested in proving that it's really Mrs. Roopy in the costumes. Clever and funny with a nice emphasis on the importance of reading and having a book for every reader - in this case, the three boys who say they don't want to read are really excited when they find out there are books about trick bikes.
Matthew: I loved this book! It was very funny when Mrs. Roopy dressed as important characters in history and in page 5 I noticed that it said that "a man walked into our room" or something like that. I think they should make the book longer so I could read more! I loved this book!
My student came in the morning and shouted “MS. LAÍS, I THINK YOU’RE GONNA LOVE THIS BOOK!!!” and I did, indeed. It was a very fuuuun story of a very creative librarian that goes beyond the extra mile to make sure the students are engaged, she is definitely into the idea of making the main character enjoy reading (he hates it!) I would highly recommend it to teachers (reading the books they read and like give us a lot of perspective about their world), junior readers or anyone that would like a quick and fun story!
THis book Mrs.roopy is loopy is funnie. It is funnie because when aj says that he hates school.I dont even hate school and am in middle school lol. So the first chapter is about how aj does not like school. He likes that teachers sould teach kids how to trick ect. Also its about a teacher name mrs.roopy.Mrs.roopy is supose to somebody outer space. The second chapter is about the libraian thats is about how aj class went to the old libraian in there school.if i went to a old place in my school i will run i kniw it would not be the right thing to do.the third chapter is about george washington teeth well the hold concept is that aj mom told him george washington had a wooden teeth and that some arny guy reach in his pooket and got the wooden teeth. In my head am like why would he reach in his pooket and get it eww .well thats all i have to sday about this book THANK YOU.
This wasn't the greatest book. I did not like the child's voice telling the school and how mean they could be in their thoughts about other people. They just weren't impressive. And there wasn't much depth. You can still write good, well-wounded characters even in a short beginner's chapter book. Plus, the book swayed from being decent level to condescending.
The book that I read was Mrs.Lizzy is Dizzy by Dan Gutman. The characters in this book are Aj the main character, Mrs Lizzy, Andrea the girl that Aj hates, Mrs.Jafee, Mr.Klutz Mr.Granite, Ryan, Michael, Officer Spence, Mrs Stanford, Emily and Neil.
Aj hates school friday one of his favorite days of the week. Friday one is his favorite days because the next day is Saturday and the next day is Sunday and they don't have school. His teacher is Mr.Granite he all ways taking about the environment. They had a robber drill at their school and they had to be quite so they put people to gether by girl boy girl boy Aj had to sit by Andrea she said “ugh disgusting”. Andrea calls Aj Arlo because Aj does not like it.
Officer Spence walked in the classroom their school security guard to tell them the robber trill is over. Over the classroom speaker Mr.Klutz announced that it is crazy week is next week. Monday will be crazy hair day. Tuesday it will be crazy clothes day. Wednesday will be crazy hat day. Thursday crazy shoes day. Friday crazy everything day. Aj on Monday for crazy hair day his mom gave him a mohawk. At recess on monday a lady walked across the street with yellow hair. She said hi kids my name is Elisabeth but you can call me Mrs.Lizzy. Mrs Lizzy told the kids that she was your teacher for Recess Enrichment Program and their going to do a lot o fun things.
For Recess Enrichment Program that day Mrs.Lizzy taught them how to make animals out of balloons. Tuesday was crazy clothes day Aj wore his dads pinstripe shirt with a red bowtie soccer shorts mittens and knee pads. Mrs. Lizzy was wearing a trash bag with holes cut out for the arms and legs. At recess Mrs.Lizzy brought a goat and taught the kids how to milk a goat. Wednesday was crazy hat day Aj wore a hat with a propeller on the top of it. For Recess Enrichment that day Mrs.Lizzy taught the kids how to yodel. Thursday was crazy shoes day Aj put two old shoe boxes on his feet. Mrs.Lizzy was going to teach the kids how to armpit fart. On friday it was crazy everything day Aj wore a bucket on his head and bounded to school on a pogo stick. For Recess Enrichment Mrs.lizzy brought a crate of worms she said they were worm composing. She said you can use worms to turn food scraps into this stuff called compost that can be added to grow plants, flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
Officer Spence came running over and said freeze dirtbag your under arrest! Mrs.Lizzy was not the real Recess Enrichment teacher she kidnapped the real Recess Enrichment teacher and tied her up in a secret room in the school basement. She was just a pretending to be the real teacher. The real teachers name is Mrs.Stanford. Mrs.Stanford said she was going to teach the kids useful things. The next week after Mrs.Lizzy got arrested the goat that they milked was at the playground. The end.
