Hypatia est une femme philosophe vivant à Alexandrie au début du christianisme, dans les années 400 après J.-C. C'est une personne très cultivée, dans la tradition grecque, et très influente. A cette époque, Alexandrie est une capitale intellectuelle et économique, un centre culturel de la Méditerranée, un carrefour, gouverné par des aristocrates gréco-byzantino-romains lettrés. Mais c'est la fin d'une époque, la crise prend la forme de l'agitation provoquée par les chrétiens, et Hypatia ne comprend pas.

I really enjoyed this book. There is not much known about women philosphers and this applies to Hypatia too off course. She was one of the most exceptional philosphers from Alexandria but she died violently, by beeing quartered and cremated on a dump. This book is about her ways of thinking, about her life-style and about the beginnings of Christendom, which were very violent sometimes. But it is also a book about her amanuensis Thonis, who is actually the one who is the direct witness of her lectures and also her death.

Un livre fort intéressant sur les troubles religieux qui ont secoué la Méditerranée au premiers jours du christianisme et derniers du panthéon grec, mais clairement pas un livre sur Hypatia malgré le titre et la quatrième de couverture. Du coup un peu décevant.

Placé dans un contexte historique que je ne connaissais pas, c'est un livre intéressant bien que j'aurai apprécié qu'il se centre plus sur le personnage d'Hypatia qui, à mon avis, aurait fait un personnage centrale bien plus digne d'intérêt que le jeune Thonis. Une bonne lecture jeunesse pour son contexte mais ne révolutionnera pas une vie.
