After graduating with honors in business management economics and psychology from the University of California Santa Cruz, Jacob was excited to join the corporate world. At his first job he was told that he’d be traveling the country, meeting with executives and entrepreneurs, and doing all sorts of exciting work. A few months in, he was stuck doing data entry, cold calling, and PowerPoint presentations. One day the CEO came out of his nice corner office, handed Jacob a $10 bill and said “I’m late for a meeting, go grab me a cup of coffee, and get something for yourself as well.” That was the last corporate job he ever had.

I found much of the advice in this book fairly self-evident and valid for the present, not necessarily for the future. The assessment offered by the companion website is useless once you have read the book.
Every generation says the world is changing and means it. This book shows how to be an effective leader in a world that is so different from even five years ago. We all need to read this book in order to keep up with this new world. People work differently now, remote work, instead of all week in an office. Walls go up, walls have come down where people used to be isolated in separate offices or even cubicles with high walls, there are now communal workspaces, open workspaces, etc. if there are cubicles, they have low walls. These spaces no longer look like episodes of the Meerkats when people pop up out of their cubicles. This book is a very easy read. It shows steps to be an effective leader in times where transparency is the number one thing in the lives of all people. With social media and so many people wishing to be famous but still have privacy, our world is skewed. No longer can you just say, “I don’t want to talk about everything” easily any longer. Thanks to social media and CCTV everywhere there is always a good chance whatever happened was observed and maybe even “televised” for the world to comment on. It is still important to treat all people you encounter with respect and that will be paid forward because everyone wants to be important either personally or professionally. Many things are pointed out in this book and they are important to remember. This is a book that should be on everyone’s shelves at home and in the office as a good guide on how to treat your employees and others in this new age.
Ở Phần I, Jacob Morgan định nghĩa về lãnh đạo.

Fundamentally I love the ideas in this book. There are useful ideologies and well placed wise quotes from brilliant and compassionate leaders. As a read; however, I have a lot of problems with this book. First off, there are numerous grammatical errors which are distracting. More annoyingly, the author comes off repetitive on numerous occasions to the point that I found myself skipping paragraphs because it felt like I was being lectured for the 10th time on a simple concept. Finally, the conclusions attached to the data results from the surveys are simply poor. For example, if 80% of individual contributor employees say that top executives are not prepared for the future, but 50% of executives say they ARE prepared for the future, this does not mean there is an inherent 30% gap. The author seems to suffer from some self-confirmation bias which is a pity because the data gathered surely has some hidden gems within it.
Why could the book not delve deeper into the perception of leadership and the potential delusions that exist. It seems individual contributors think they could be better leaders. Meanwhile leaders know that they have issues, but they think they are doing the best they can. One of the key challenges for a future leader will be bridging that gap, and we have the potential to discuss that with the data sets gathered in preparing this book. Instead of a challenging discussion we end up with an HR consultant’s “notable nine” skills and mindsets of the future leader.
Worth the read, but could have been much better if refined and executed differently.

I really enjoyed the topic and approach author, Jacob Morgan, captured in this book. The topic is all about leadership, how its changing, and the four mindsets/five skills (notable nine) you can focus on to be successful for the future. The approach he used involved quantitative and qualitative data points to support his concepts and conclusions. For example, the notable nine are captured from the many interviews of over 140 CEO's and supported with some measured survey's used on platforms such as LinkedIn. This was the first book I read by Jacob, but I would put him the category of an upcoming John Maxwell type author as this books captures the essence of leadership and very solid tips to apply. He brings some fresh and new concepts to the dialogue as he connects the importance of technology and diversity into the leadership conversation. The notable nine resonates well to my experiences and I definitely think they can help prepare other leaders.
In The Future Leader, Morgan writes about how in the next decade, leaders will have to adapt to the constantly changing workplace that is affected by automation and other new technologies. The skills and jobs that will be created in the future will be specific to the needs of our society. Currently in the U.S., there are roughly 1 supervisor to every 6 workers and 80% of these workers when surveyed, say that they can perform their jobs without having a supervisor. This survey shows that some supervisors or managers are better leaders than others. This is where the author asks the important question, “What is Leadership?”. After interviewing many CEO's of various companies for research, he found that they all had slightly different descriptions of leadership. Morgan believes that having a clear definition of leadership is important to the success of a company. It was after researching that he found nine characteristics of a good leader which he calls the “Notable Nine”. The Notable Nine includes 4 mindsets and 5 skills that a leader needs to succeed in a future business. There are comparisons between good and bad leaders. Bad or toxic leaders cause a lot of stress to their employees and are the reason most people look for other jobs. On the other hand, good leaders encourage their employees and let them know they are valued. This is a good book for anyone who aspires to be a supervisor of any company, because leaders of the future will face an ever changing work environment in the next decade. It explains that it is important for future leaders to be ethical, have a diverse workforce and embrace new technology which can increase production and provide the tools that help leaders make better decisions. Overall, a very informative book.
This was a well written book, although it had a bit too much references for me to fully enjoy it. But the references has it’s beauty - you can reference any facts here in a discussion or presenting this to your team.
Also I understood that being a great leader is the hardest job you can do in your life, as it requires unstoppable growth.
In "The Future Leader: 9 Skills and Mindsets to Succeed in the Next Decade," author Jacob Morgan breaks down into dissectible bites on all aspects of "leadership." He defines the word and explains how to become an actual leader to strive for achievable results of your goals. It takes more than mentioning to people that you are a leader. Proven data provided by the author demonstrates that many who are leaders are figuring out how to lead. Readers get to read definitions of a leader from actual bosses and CEOs at a couple of companies. The author encourages his readers to understand that the world would be different in a decade and what methods you're learning now wouldn't apply in the future. This prepares those interested in improving their current position that would stand a chance in the years to come. The tools and skills necessary to enable a smoother leader transition to greatness are contained within these pages. The guidance is readily available, people have to be willing to make adaptable changes for it to be successful.
At this time while the country is experiencing another national hardship, this book came in a clutch for me because I love learning about self-improvement. As businesses are lucking out on the opportunity for sales, the individuals are grasping at options that they can survive on. This book is the clarity everyone needs to step up to the plate and offer guidance to individuals amongst your team. We should be aiming to be a better community and company, which starts by leading by example. I recommend everyone to take a moment to read this book, it is both encouraging and inspiring to fulfill the current gaps that leaders struggle to fill.
The Future Leader, a standout read by Jacob Morgan, grabs the attention of every leader or leader to be. Every component of successful leadership is covered and backed with interviews from the best of the best CEO's in today's global business world. The people who work to build successful businesses are examined as well as their relationships with their employees. The perspective of leading and creating leaders equal or better than themselves is examined closely by Mr. Morgan. Future success in global business is dependent on great leadership and great leadership is fully yours to learn in this fact filled read. A highlight in this book is the mention of the Notable Nine. The Notable Nine provides unique tools to become the best of the best in leadership! The marriage of tech and existing business is also examined for the next decade. Will employees be replaced or repositioned? Insights on this subject are necessary for future business leaders to be competitive. When was your last reality check on your success as a leader? Are you schooled at being an explorer, chef, servant, or global citizen? Very thoughtful reading to become a leader who gets the highest results. Business acumen and strong leadership are tied to success. Both personal and work relationships require your attention and the outline for success is provided here in this highly recommended book. A quote by Abraham Lincoln in this book, "The best way to predict the future is to create it". Start creating your successful future today with the extraordinary tools provided in Mr. Morgans new book!
The Future Leader :9 Skills and Mindsets to Succeed in the Next Decade by Jacob Morgan is a book that is geared towards corporate leaders in today's business society. The author Jacob Morgan is a well known "author, speaker, futurist, and founder of FutureofWorkUniversity.com." The author has written several books and for this book inteviewed" over 140 of the world's top CEOs "and surveyed " nearly 1400 people". The research, and commitment to providing a polished well written but amazing book, was so clear when I finished reading the introduction alone. In the introduction, Jacob Morgan started with Mariners and explores and how they used landmarks such as lighthouses to lead them to their destinations, he then showed how he sees the future leaders like "lighthouses ". Mr Morgan did such a clear job transitioning each paragraph but still showing the importance of leadership not only in business but the world! The author drew me in quickly and I was thoroughly impressed with the author dedication and work in this book. The first part of the book goes through definining leadership, quality's of good leaders, toxic leaders, showing why we need good leadership and providing interviews , quotes and insight of some CEOs like that of yahoo and other well known corporations. I was suprised at the poll he provided from the workers at monster.com,I dont want to spoil it but for a website that has been around for as long as it has and is supposed to help the client find a job and create a resume its employees didnt respond to the poll with the answers I expected. The book itself has five parts. Part one Understanding the Role of Leader, which I have discussed about In the previous paragraphs. Part two Trends and challenges shaping Future leaders,Really explores our possible future with robots and robotics. The author discusses if the work force has already been or could in the future be replaced by robots, and he discusses the good bad and ugly possibilities the future holds and why good leadership now and in the future really hold the key to what happens or not.The last part of this second section introduces the reader to the notable Nine. "From all of the research done for this book, four mindsets, along with five skills, kept coming up as being essential for the future leader to possess: the Notable Nine (Figure 11.5). The four mindsets are those of the explorer, chef, servant, and global citizen. These are covered in detail in Part 3. The five skills are those of the coach, futurist, technology teenager, the translator, and Yoda."Part Three The four Mindsets of the notable nine. This section brakes diwn each one of the notable nine in great detail and explains how and why they are important. Part Four The five skills of the notable nine shows the skills and how they can be developed and put to use as a leader. Part five Becoming The Future Leader. This last potion of the book stirs every thing together and shows the reader how to not only know what to do to lead their work group but they how to build and mold their work group. I will say this Aythor truly poured his heart into this book and it shines through every interview, poll, truly every paragraph seemed to approach topics that some people in the work force may have feel they have heard obed and over bur deliverance them and the book itself in such a manner I truly wish I had this when I was ar my prior corporate career of 15 years I feel it truly could have improved so much! I highly recommend this book to any one looking to start their career, has been working or just wants to create and implement great leadership in their work force! God Bless!
My husband is the kind of person that catches on very quickly to just about anything that he attempts. This is actually a bit annoying for me mostly because I'm jealous but over time I have realized how hard it is for him to deal with managers or a foreman. He usually masters the work and then finds himself answering to people with less experience or knowledge. Unfortunately he generally becomes so frustrated that he loses his temper or changes jobs before he can ever come close to a management position. The beginning of this book was very clarifying in regards to my husband's struggle. The author, states in the begining of, The Future Leader: 9 Skills and Mindsets to Succeed in the Next Decade, "80% of employees say they can do their jobs without their managers and actually think that their managers are not necessary." Sadly, this is probably the mindset for many employees. The employees continue to grow and learn throughout their career but have a leader that doesn't acknowledge their growth therefore the employee ends up feeling under valued or taken for granted. Another quote from Barrie Rafferty states, "If you want to attract and keep top talent, then you need to make sure to invest in their experience. Employees have more power and this will only continue to increase. We have to build organizations with our people, not for them. Leaders must understand that they and their organizations are nothing without the people who work there." This is probably the best advice I have heard in regards to valuing employees. They are the back bone, heart, and lungs of a business. If only more employers would take the time to read this book and really absorb the information, people like my husband might actually be valued and used as a true asset to the company instead of forcing them to stay within the borders of their position. Allow people to move up, expand, and use what they have learned or the skills they have acquired to improve the business itself. The author, Jacob Morgan is well spoken with a intelligent approach to the leadership skills and qualities that are needed for success. He has taken the wisdom from successful CEO's and put it together with research, real numbers, and solid advice.
Jacob Morgan is an accomplished speaker and business leadership expert and trainer. I The Future Leader he outlines principles and mindsets that will serve anyone interested in becoming a good leader in their organization. The differences between supervisors/managers and leaders is explored and tips for navigating an ever-changing work landscape is discussed.
The first part of the book is very enlightening as it discusses why many become frustrated with their jobs. It really hit home and gave me a new perspective on my current job that should serve me well going forward as I look for ways to improve and move up in the organization. Some simple insights worked as a powerful catalyst in changing the way I think about the work I do.
If that’s all this book did, I would have been very happy with this purchase. However, Mr. Morgan continues and discusses many aspects of what will be required to be successful in the future, how to build strong and loyal employees, and how to be a better trainer and leader and not just a manager (or worse, a micromanager).
He draws on experiences of top business leaders and provides clear examples that are helpful and applicable to just about anyone. Like many books, a lot of it appears to be feel-good anecdotal stories that are hard to apply in real-life. However, Mr. Morgan quickly moves beyond that and gives solid, implementable practices. The stories bolster the principles rather than having the stories stand alone as some kind of amorphous, unattainable, philosophical guidepost.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book. It will prove useful to just about anyone interested in leadership of any kind and will help change your perspective on your life and the role work plays in it.
Just from the book title itself, 'The Future Leader' ,you will keenly notice it's all about key leadership that will be there in future in this transforming world. The author, Jacob did an amazing work in choosing the best title ever and a very good researched work written inside. Everyone can be a leader, but it takes other good qualities to be a great leader like the CEO's of the big companies Morgan interviewed in his book. Reading this book opened up my mind to view leadership in a very wide perspective because of the many insights and reasons I got from the book. A great leader in future should have the high notch skills to deal with the changing trends in today's world. The leader should learn from their predecessors and act well in order to take their leadership to another substantive level accepted by everyone. The future leader should also know of the implications that arises and how to tackle this implications in the changing world. The flip after flip of this book also made me to realise how top CEO's in their leadership impacts the society around them to produce good and acceptable results in the market. The valuable book has also changed my mind on how to act at my work place in a very ethical way on how a future leader should. The author, also in some way compelled me while reading the book to follow the steps of other great leaders in also becoming a great leader also in future. Jacob did an incredible work in writing this book. He did a great thing to write this worth reading book in preparing a great success in future for most people. I really learnt a lot from him. Thumbs up to this.
When I think of businessmen, I think of Ebenezer Scrooge, the bankers from Mary Poppins, Linus Larabee from Sabrina or your oddball businessman similar to the uncle played by Paul Hogan in Flipper. The only one who might survive these days is Porter Ricks. Everyone else would be a fish out of water.
Business practices are changing daily in a world that is moving from one crazy situation to the next. Evolution is a necessary step in survival, but what does that mean for you as a leader? What will you have to do to survive the salmon run upstream?
This book not only contains knowledge from all points of the globe and business universe, but takes them all and uses them to create a yellow brick road to a clearer future. Leaders come from all walks of life and never let where they began stop them from succeeding. On the contrary, to use one's path as a guide to where you want to go is always a good practice.
I found it to be a clean and concise narrative; a refreshing look at the ever changing world around us. It does not get bogged down in the minutiae, but charges forward like a man on a mission. It uses attainable goals to paint the way and leaves you with the final say as to what you plan to do next. It is definitely a good read if you want to improve your skills.
I am volunteering an honest review for the benefit of others.
When I looked at the chapter list it looked very daunting because of their being so many of them but don't take that into account. The book is, in my opinion, not that long, but it is long enough to make you think of the things it has in it. I liked the introduction very much, explaining that for thousands of years there have been people that would like a better future for themselves and their families. Most people think towards the future not the past, and it is like the old saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" but not in this case. Read this book and it will teach you new tricks on how to, potentially, deal with the future and not the past, again these are just my personal opinions on reading this book. There are CEO's of all kinds of different companies taking advice from this author and taking it with tremendous and amazing value. The things he says and has to offer in the way of advice is awesome. If I were to ever become a CEO or company owner then I would definitely seek this guy out to ask a few things. The book gives great insight into leadership skills and how to become a more effective leader in the world, it gives incredible tips, tricks and wisdom into the business world itself. I never knew much about the business stuff in the world but this book gives you a good, hard look into all of that and, in a way, shows you how to deal with it.
Just finished reading The Future Leader by Jacob Morgan, and I can say it’s a fantastic read for anyone in leadership or aspiring to be a leader in our evolving world. Morgan dives deep into the qualities, skills, and mindset that will define future leaders, grounding his insights in real-world research and interviews with 140+ CEOs.
Key Takeaways:
1. Mindsets Matter: Morgan identifies specific mindsets like the Explorer and the Chef, which leaders need to cultivate to stay adaptable, innovative, and empathetic.
2. Skills of the Future: From technology literacy to developing “soft” power, Morgan outlines the abilities that will set apart effective leaders in the years to come.
3. Empowering Frameworks: He provides practical frameworks to start developing these attributes today, not tomorrow.
I rated this book 8.5/10 and not higher because much of the content already aligns with practices I've adopted. However, his takes go a step further by offering more nuanced guidance for refinement.
It’s an invaluable playbook for leaders who are committed to continuous growth and for organizations aiming to cultivate strong, future-ready leadership.
In the book “Future Leader: 9 Skills and Mindsets to Succeed in the Next Decade” I found that Jacob Morgan had a lot of good information to share with his readers. I thought it was interesting that a lot of the things he said not to do, I have seen different “leaders” and businesses practice. While I felt that all of the examples he gave were a bit overwhelming, i.e. too many, I did find them to be very helpful in trying to explain his basis of using the skills and/or mindsets. In struggling through the stats that he kept giving about all of the leaders he quoted, I was able to glean bits of information that really showed what he was trying to tell potential future leaders. When he finally got into the 9 skills and mindsets, I was ready to see what a future leader will really need in order to help themselves, their employees and their companies to succeed in the next decade, and further. I would definitely suggest this book be read and followed by anyone who is looking to be any type of leader. I also felt it spoke to me as a wife and mother in how I should raise my family so that they will be able to help create a better working world for their children’s future.
Do you have what it takes to be a leader in today’s business world? Can you define leadership? This book is a great tool to get you started on finding good leaders or becoming one. Most people think good leaders are “someone who makes money and can grow a business”, this author does not agree with that, his idea of a good leader is someone who is willing to work harder, solve more problems and put the workers under him first. We need to rethink the value a leader brings to the table, are they willing to take chances, help employees seek a higher work ethic, dream of the future and make those dreams a reality. He also says they must be transparent to have a strong ethical foundation. It’s important to have good morals as well so your employees know where you stand, you don’t always have to see eye to eye on everything though. The future leaders are going to have some big challenges to overcome in the near future, (seems very true for the situation our country is in right now). The author interviewed 140 CEO’s to find the top 9 challenges leaders need to face to become better. There is also the Golden Triangle of leadership with 3 elements, belief, actions, and thoughts that should shape you as a leader. The author believes that all companies need people to run them, a company can not run on technology alone. In conclusion he thinks that leadership is a team sport, the whole company needs leaders to excel their employees and challenges to grow the company.
Mr. Morgan has written a well-researched and compelling book about the future of leadership and work in general. I found myself in agreement with many of the points that he made and looked at current and previous work experiences where I thought management could benefit reading this book.
The Notable Nine, as Mr. Morgan coins in the book consist of four mindsets and five skills that every future leader will need to maintain a successful organization. The four mindsets include, "the global citizen", "the servant", "the chef", and "the explorer". The five skills include, "the coach", "the futurist", "the tech teenager", "the translator" and "the Yoda".
While the Notable Nine are crucial for successful leadership, I believe that these also apply to the individual contributors inside the organization. You do not need to be a manager to try and create a positive and enriching community inside your organization. It really does take everyone to shape an organization that people want to work and make an effort for.
This book introduces mindsets and skills that leaders need to have to overcome future challenges. It helps readers better grasp how to inspire teams and what it means to be a leader by blending insightful anecdotes from the world’s best business executives with factual statistics. It encourages readers to think about what leadership is now and what it should be in the future. Based on interviews with 140 CEOs, it explains how leadership is changing, why it is changing, and what leaders can do about it. This book allows today’s leaders to learn from their peers, as well as the next generation of leaders who may learn from our triumphs and failures. The book has a general audience and no level of expertise or education is needed to understand its simple message.
Author presents skills and mindsets of great leaders (four mindsets: the Explorer, the Chef, the Servant, and the Global Citizen, the five skills are the Futurist, Yoda, the Translator, the Coach, and the Technology Teenager).
Very valuable part of this book are interviews with CEOs of well known companies. One thing that makes me to rate 4 is that this book is still about present leader, nothing new covered that is not existing now and would be required in ten years, but still the material is good, will structured.
The best thing about this book is the research and conversations that Jacob Morgan, which yields a lot of insights about what organisations need to do in an increasingly complex future. Leadership models of the past no longer work for simple linear problems. We need leaders that are able to create diversity and inclusivity in organisations as well as having the courage to be decisive and lead the organisation into an uncertain future.
Came in extremely optimistic about this Book given its ground breaking research and access to top executives. Reports were repetitive and not all that helpful (leaders have a self-awareness gap in how good they are at various skill sets).
Content itself was about 80% generic or unhelpful. 20% was good and of that 20% less than 5% was excellent.
Saying all this after having read over 100 professional development books so worth noting.
Leadership is such an important topic and I'm glad to see it addressed with so much research, heart, time, and attention. I've read countless "fluff" leadership books out there and this one is certainly not one of them. Kudos to you Jacob for putting something together that is so thoroughly research and put together.
It's definitely a hefty read at over 300 pages but it's worth it. The concept of thinking like a futurist is one that I have not heard of but found incredibly useful as it teaches readers to think in terms of possibilities and scenarios much like a chess player does. Some of the other things I am familiar with still great refreshers.
Is leadership really changing? I would have largely said no but this book makes some compelling arguments in the trends section with things like globalization, technology, etc. We can especially see leadership changing as a result of Covid. Overall a compelling read that will get you to think differently about leaedership

My take away: For leaders, success doesn't just mean creating a more profitable organization. It means creating a place where employees genuinely want to show up to work each day; it means creating an organization that positively impacts society and the world; and it means creating an organization that always puts people first.
I read this book for a class and downloaded the audiobook. I think it was incredibly fun to listen to. I work in an area that touches on a lot of different industries. The author of this book uses many real-life scenarios and everything he says is a direct reflection of what I see in my day-to-day work. It was a fantastic read! I highly recommend it.
