From the Best Selling Author of The Courage to Teach comes a New Resource for Reflection and Renewal
This guide will help teachers, individually and in groups, reflect on their teaching and renew their sense of vocation by exploring the inner landscape of their lives along Palmer's three dimensions--intellectual, emotional, and spiritual. The guide will raise questions, examine ideas and images, and suggest practices that emerge from the many insights in The Courage to Teach.
The Courage to Teach Guide helps facilitators ask exceptional reflective questions about teaching and who teachers are at the depths of their souls. Creating a "community of learners," exploring these questions gives each soul "the deep listening and receptivity it wants and needs."
"The Heart of the Teacher," in Appendix B is what I would personally like to explore with my 1st and 2nd year teacher group.
I also want to explore the "heart mantra." These are four phases in a teacher's life: teaching from the heart, losing heart, seeking to take heart, and giving heart to students. Teachers can identify and explore the phase or phases that characterize their vocation at the time.
I want to explore the "skillful means," both obvious and subtle that teachers use to create an environment conducive to learning. I also want to explore the "critical moments" that teachers have in which a learning opportunity for students either opens up or shuts down. Naming the "clusters" of critical moments would be interesting and inform our work as teachers.
The "Metphors" of good teaching is my favorite!
Listening to the CD's in The Courage to Teach and the Guide makes the complicated language in the first book easier to understand. Using excerpts from the CD's for the group would be beneficial.
