Love at First Psych

Rate this book
True love is put to the test in this romantic comedy brought to hilarious life by Santino Fontana (Frozen, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Stephanie Einstein, and a full cast!

This Psych 312 assignment just might send me off the deep end. Determining whether love at first sight really exists with Robbie Moravian as my project partner of all people?

He’s the sappiest man alive, so upbeat I could scream, and clearly rooting for happy endings at every turn. How does he not learn from experience considering our own meet-cute last semester almost got us expelled?

But we both need to pass this course to graduate. So we’re interviewing five random couples about their meet-cutes and relationships and spending all this time together. Which is certainly...educational.

Because it turns out Robbie isn’t just the charming golden boy I thought I knew. There’s some actual depth beneath all those lame dad jokes and the ‘70s-inspired thrift wardrobe (even if he does look ridiculously great in a flared collar). Next thing I know he’s walking me back to my office on the regular and finishing all my sentences and protecting me from freak storms, and...

Wait. Could Robbie be right? Can happy endings really come from unhappy beginnings? Is he about to change my entire world view?

Group projects are the worst.

Hi, I’m Cara!
I’m a full time writer living and writing in Brooklyn with my husband, son, and an almost-goldendoodle. My goal with my work is to find the swoon in ordinary love stories.

I’ve been a fan of the romance genre since I found a grocery bag filled with my grandmother’s old Harlequin Romances when I was in high school. I’m a fangirl for pretzel sticks, long walks through Prospect Park, and love stories featuring men who aren’t crippled by their own masculinity.

This was like listening to a long and fun conversation that you didn’t want to end. Add the sweet interviews about love and it was darn near perfect. And the ending? If you want to melt a little then check this out!

Another cute and light story by this author. It took me a bit to warm up to Marigold and I wasn't completely sold on , but Robbie was pretty great from the start. I really liked their conversations and the little things they did for each other. I even enjoyed the interviews with different couples, which is something that didn't appeal to me initially.

The audiobook production is excellent. A full cast of narrators - perfect for a story written only in dialogue, and realistic sound effects made the listening experience even more enjoyable.

I am a vegan and this book was waaay too cheesy for me.

Since I am also a huge Cara Bastone fan, I was expecting "Love at First Sight" with "Love at First Psych".

Unfortunately, that never happened.

To the author's credit, the book's "Love at First Sight" premise was spot-on with a clever tie-in with a Psych 312 assignment about instantly falling in love.  I also enjoyed the author's signature wit.

Overall, however, the book completely fizzled.

As a result, I spent more time checking "How many more minutes?" than smiling and enjoying the storyline.

Cara Bastone's rom-com novellas in her "Love Line" series (Audible Plus) were 10-star reads for me but this one was a huge disappointment.

2 stars rounded up.

I am smiling from ear to ear! This audio was sweet and cute and so much fun! The last ten percent I was laughing out loud! I adore Cara Bastone. I adore Robbie and Marigold.

Awhile back in my main group in Goodreads, we had the opportunity to read books specifically tagged "coffee." This would have been perfect for that tag, and coffee is a major vehicle of the story. It's wonderful the way it works into a metaphor for relationships.

So tell me - do you believe in love at first sight?

This is a full-cast audio story with no narration, just dialogue; an audible play type-of-thing. Which works pretty well, I think, and I really love when it is done well. This story is done well.

I have to say that I was in this for Robbie. He's invested and interesting but most of all, it is clear that he is honestly interested in the people around him. And I particularly liked how patient he is with Marigold as he worms his way into her good graces.

Not that Marigold wasn't great in her own way. She's something of a grump, so it took me a little to warm up to her. Once she started letting Robbie into her vulnerable side the story kicks up a notch and became riveting.

There's a bit of a mystery surrounding an event in their past and it's clear that Robbie doesn't know the whole story. So a lot of their through-line is him trying to get Marigold to the point where she can share what was obviously an embarrassing situation for her. I was glad that the reveal held together and made sense. And even happier that it extended my understanding of Marigold and became an important boost for their relationship when shared.

This is a little too light/short to warrant a full five stars. Some of the family dynamics were short-shrifted and some of the interviews felt like nothing more than an opportunity to highlight Robbie and Marigold (well, of course they are, but they aren't supposed to feel that way). But it's a solid four stars and I'm glad I took the time to listen.

A note about Chaste: It's all dialogue. So I'm really, really glad there wasn't any sex, explicit or otherwise. The kissing was fairly well handled, fortunately, though there wasn't much of that, even in the end. So this is very chaste.

Cara Bastone’s audiobooks are some of the best. I love that they have a full cast and listening is truly an experience. This one was cute. Not my favorite of these books, but still cute. I absolutely loved the hero and I found the ending with the heroine fun.

Light-hearted rom-com with a full cast of narrators!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: ❤️💙💜💚

Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎🌍
Character development: 😠☺️😋🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Full Cast Duet Narration

The heroine: Marigold - she is getting a psychology degree and was assigned a two-person project on love at first sight. She is not too happy with her partner, Robbie who is a bit too laid back for her, as she is focused and ready to get to work. Though she is also not too fond of the topic and doesn’t believe in love at first sight. She isn’t a romantic at heart.

The Hero: Robbie - he has a cherry disposition, is charismatic and engaging and has an optimistic view on love and life. He is carefree and easy going and completely opposite of Marigold. He is also a bit of a flirt and has some depth to him that isn’t apparent at first glance. A person has to get to know him better to see inside.

The Story: Marigold and Robbie have to work together to do their project and both of them need to pass the class in order to graduate. This means they have to spend quite a bit of time together while they interview five different couples and put together their report. At first Marigold doesn’t really like Robbie, but after time together she starts to realize that she was making assumptions about him and that he is not what she originally thought.

The book was a cute one, funny and the characters were likable, especially Robbie. He was a bit of a cornball, but I liked that he was intelligent and had a sense of humor about so many things. Also I liked the interviews with the different couples, it added a lot of dimension to the storyline and I liked the view it gave into different love stories and relationships. The relationship between Robbie and Marigold was very yin-yang but ended up being really adorable. I loved the way everything came together.

This story, like the previous audiobooks I have listened to from Cara Bastone is done in multiple points of view by a full cast in duet narration, including background sounds. I like these because they are done well and you get the full listening experience. Like the other books of hers that I have listened to, this one starts out in a café or restaurant and you get all the background sounds of a busy café which is fun.

The books in the Love Lines series had the main two narrators who were some that I had listened to before and was familiar with. In this book, the two main narrators were Santino Fontana and Stephanie Einstein. I hadn’t heard either of these narrators before, but they both have good voices that truly fit the characters and did a great job.

This was okay. Not all the way romantic or all the way emotional. I mean I can see why people are liking it but it just didn't have those swoon-worthy moments for me.

The story definitely reminds me of When Harry Met Sally when we get to hear snippets of couples in-between the movie and I think that could've been the inspiration for the author.

An adorable and fast paced cinematic audiobook with lots of banter and no spice.
Entertaining and sweet, this was just a light, fun time.

Cara Bastone is great for positive heroes and strong heroines. I loved both main characters in this character driven romcom.

This is a cute sweet little romance story with a talented full ensemble cast. Not really an enemies to lovers story, it's more of a series of misunderstandings that are resolved step by step.

After finishing a long read requiring some brain power it is nice to do a pallet cleanser and read something easy and fun. That is definitely what Love at First Psych is. It is a rom-com style book with a full cast of narrators adding a little spice to the conversations between our two main characters.

Marigold and Robbie are assigned an assignment in their Psych class to interview at least five couples and give their insights into whether there is really such a thing as love at first site. These two have a little history from a previous class they took together. Both really needing this class they are looking to make the absolute best of it.

First this is a quick fun read/listen. I enjoyed all the banter between the two characters. Robbie's dialogue and quick whit were a lot of fun. He is sappy, he believes in love at first site and he really just has fun living life right now. Marigold is a much tighter person in general who hasn't really learned to trust her voice and embrace sharing her thoughts with those around her. It was fun to see how each person brought out the best in the other during the assignment.

The interviews with the couples were interesting and I enjoyed the overall story. The 'incident' that was there weird hang-up wasn't really mind blowing but it was kinda cute all things be told. I really liked the ending scene in the coffee shop.

Overall if all you are looking for is some fun dialogue and cuteness this is for you. There is the one swoony part at the end but this isn't overly romantic so I had a great time overall. Bonus this was free in my audible membership so I was only too happy to download for a listen.

I ended up liking this cute story more than I expected. I’m sure the audiobook had something to do with it. So many times while I was listening, I kept looking around half expecting someone behind me because of the sound effects from the book, it’s just that good.

Love at First Psych follows two college age adults working on a project together, but this isn’t the first time they met. The author eludes to a situation that happened previously and when it’s revealed what happened, it explains everything.

It’s a short audiobook, so if you’re looking for a quick listen, give it a try.

I love Cara Bastone’s writing. This is the fourth one of her stories I’ve listened to that is written for audio, and they have all been great. This story is light and fun, but feels real, possibly in part because of the format (written for audio). The characters are believable in spite of the fact that you know it is going to be a sweet story where everything works out perfectly in the end. it is just fun to listen to and enjoy a story without a lot of road blocks thrown in place for the characters as part of the formula.

“That smile is for me right?”
“The whole thing. It’s all yours”

I love this book so much! At first, I didn’t know where the plot was going or why the characters were interviewing so many couples, but I really loved reading the different love stories, analysing them, forming my own perspectives, and seeing how the characters viewed them through their own versions of truth. It was all so beautiful in a unique and nuanced way—one of the best storylines Cara Bastone has ever written. This woman never fails to amaze me.

I loved the characters too! They were funny and quirky, had great chemistry, and I really enjoyed seeing them tease each other, make theories about love at first psych, and talk about everything. Their conversations were so interesting that I never wanted the book to end! The romance was full of sweetness, fluff, and some cliché and cheesy moments, but my heart was literally melting on every page. I just love Robbie, the hilarious, golden retriever nerdy boy who’s obsessed with Marigold and dad jokes. Marigold was also so much fun. I love how she got on Robbie’s nerves sometimes.

The full-cast audiobook was amazing! I’m obsessed with these audiobooks, and I can’t help but binge-listen to everything. They are my new favourite thing 🤭❤️

4 ⭐️ Cute, short audiobook

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ academic romance
✨ classmates to lovers
✨ project about love at first sight
✨ forced proximity
✨ no spice
✨ HEA

My Thoughts:

I just wanted something lighthearted and fun to listen to during a drive. This was it.

I like the premise. The narrators did an excellent job. I just didn't love this story because I found the guy to be too awkwardly chatty for my taste. Some of the stuff he said (while not bad) would have embarrassed me if I were standing next to him in public. Like, I would have thought he had a screw loose if I didn't know him and realized he was just being goofy. So I didn't really find his personality attractive. But again, the story was sweet and I enjoyed it.

A solid Cara Bastone book, but probably my least favourite in her Love Lines series so far. Robbie and Marigold have to work on a psych project together for class. They need to interview 5 couples and ask them questions about their relationship.

Cara Bastone does sunshine cinnamon roll heroes so well and Robbie is no exception. I actually found him a bit annoying at first LOL but he quickly grew on me.

My only issue with this story is that there was a bit too much focus on the 5 couples that Robbie and Marigold interviewed. I totally understand why these couples' stories were included—they served a purpose by pushing Robbie and Marigold to talk and get to know each other. But I just wasn't invested in those stories. I wanted the entire audiobook to solely focus on Robbie and Marigold's love story.

This was cute, but probably my least favorite of her audible novellas. There just wasn’t a ton of chemistry between the two leads and the big surprise/reveal fell flat. I enjoyed Robbie’s golden retriever energy, but I just didn’t feel a true connection between him and Marigold. The highlight of the novella was the narration. The full cast and sound effects were a treat, but the star of the book was Santino Fontana. Yes, I do think of Prince Hans when I hear him, but that just adds to the fun LOL

Love At First Psych by Sara Bastone is an interesting standalone rom-com where the main characters are working on a group project to interview a variety of couples of their relationships. Whilst that’s happening Marigold and Robbie start to fall for each other.

I adore the overall coffee theory!

This was another brilliant audiobook with great dialogue and sound effects. The length of the story is great as well, as it’s long enough for a complete story but short enough that it can be listened to in a few hours.

Two college students with a past and super attracted to each other…unbeknownst to them of course, partner up to do a psych project about whether or not love can happen at first sight. I absolutely love when an audio has a full cast. It feels like you’re listening to a movie in your head. I really enjoyed this quick listen!

I am seriously devastated that this didn't work for me at all. This isn't technically billed as a "Love Lines" story (which were all 4 or 5 star reads for me), but the framing device is still similar where the entire story plays out on voice recording memos for a college project between two (late 20s) college undergrads working on a 'love at first sight' psychology project that involves interviewing real life couples. It's basically the worst parts of When Harry Met Sally, but instead it takes up nearly the entire book. The MCs have "a history" before the book begins when they were in major college trouble from a previous class they took together, which isn't revealed what really happened until the book is almost over and thank god for that because it made 0.0% sense and I would have DNFd had it happened sooner: I'm just left very very confused.

I think it could have been saved had there been a sweet developing romance underneath, with Robbie's golden retriever energy being a highlight, but the cynic FMC and overly optimistic/romantic MMC feels like a played out cheesy rom com trope to me. And the the very concept of "Love at First Sight" just means that they don't really have a ton of meaningful reasons that they feel romantically interested in each other. So everything is kind doomed from the get go. Plus with so much book time devoted to other couples, and then having to invent "oh i forgot we left our recording device on for hours and hours and uploaded everything for our professor to hear whoops" silly contrived reasons for the voice memo framing device to even work, it never really comes together for this one.

1-one description of the book: Cringe.

While this is not my typical genre, I decided to try the audiobook since I enjoyed Call Me Maybe by the same author and it was free. I did not finish the audiobook. I got to 70%, and could not do it anymore. It was painful. The characters were annoying and immature, and the narrator for the male character was irritating.

this was my first book by Cara Bastone and what a blast it was! it wasn’t my all time favourite, but it was definitely such a cute little story and I can’t recommend this enough if you want a quick and fun read. the audiobook was also brilliant as it had background noises and multiple narrators and I think this is how all audiobooks should be done! the reading experience is much better that way.

𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨: Marigold and Robbie were definitely meant to be together lol they were so hilarious and their banters really made me giggle a couple of times throughout the book! honestly, I wish Robbie was my friend irl cos I just know I’d laugh my arse off every single day with a person like that 😂 I wonder what his zodiac sign was… anyway, I think he was my favourite character in this book, although Marigold was quite a fun character too!

𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙩𝙮𝙡𝙚: I loved how most of this book was told in dialogue. this made the story FLY by and it was only 4 and a half hours long! it felt so natural and like you were actually standing next to them, listening to 2 besties bantering. 😂

𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙡𝙤𝙩: I loved the idea of a psych project where you had to interview couples and lowkey find out whether it was love at first sight for them or not. we got 5 different stories in this book and I found them all to be so interesting! I’d love to do that irl though, hearing other people talk about their loved ones always makes my heart melt. 🖤 anyway, I also loved the dysfunctional family trope—Marigold had a pretty much absent father (although he was nice enough to appear out of nowhere and pay for her studies, unlike my dad 🙃) and Robbie’s parents were in an unhappy marriage. there was also a vegan representation, so if you’re vegan, this book could be a fun read for you!

I've heard good things about these audible shorts from this author, and after listening to this one, I think the reputation is well-deserved. The banter between the leads is wonderful, and for a story told only through dialogue, both main characters are really well drawn. Actually, all the side characters are really well-characterized as well and the full-cast audio suits this sort of story. Highly recommended.

I adore these graphic audios by Cara Bastone!

Marigold and Robbie are two unconventional college students who have been paired to work together on a psych project. This story happens through the voice recordings they are required to record during interviews they need for this project. The project's topic is love at first sight, so they will be interviewing multiple couples to learn about their love stories. Marigold and Robbie might fall for each other during this project.

This was such a fun read!! I loved these two main characters and the side ones as well! The audio was such a joy to listen to :)
