Updated Review 8/21/22: And my reread of this series is complete! This series is one of my favorites and so so so glad I reread it once more! It continues to be perfection and deeply loved how it ended! <3

Original Review 8/15/22: Oh, how I adore this beautiful series!!

I still can't get over the fact that I didn't have this high on my radar before now. It was so incredibly sweet and truly absolute perfection!

While I DESPERATELY wanted more of these two, this was a fantastic conclusion to this series! I deeply loved their first date and what Hinocchi gives her and how all the way until the end they kept their promise to her Dad. Talk about strength!!

The opening chapter was hilarious and think this series has such a great balance between Ririka's life at home and her life at school. Granted we see a lot more of her being at school this volume and totally confess that I was SUPER nervous that we suddenly have this love triangle, but thankfully there was none of that! I actually thought it interesting how it brought about a certain conversation involving insecurity as well as a certain development in the story that's unrelated to our main couple.

That first date though…I really really loved it even if it did bring about some nervousness in me personally in regards to what was spoken at the end. LOL!! I think the feelings of long distance and the lack of high school memories was really accurate since when I first started my now husband I was in high school and he wasn't. So I really felt so many of Ririka's actions were super relatable and found it interesting to read a manga that mirrored many of my own struggles in this way.

Having finished the series, I'm so sad it's over. I am honestly reconsidering rereading it again because I truly enjoyed it so much! It was such a beautiful love story with no worries of love triangles and a maturity that I have not seen quite like this in shojo manga. Definitely highly recommend it!!

(Also anyone else wondering why Kodansha said this series is 16+ up on their website? SUPER misleading in my opinion. My only guess is the age gap made it that rating? But the series is so clean I'm really really surprised it gets the 16+…)

Ririka and Hinocchi are…n’t dating! Holding true to their word, the two are staying chaste until Ririka graduates. Luckily that won’t be temptation incarnate at all. And when a young kouhai shows up that’s just like Ririka, has the fabled rival shown up at the last second to wreck everything?

Don’t try this at home, kids.

If you can’t get past the premise, don’t bother, obviously, but dang if this wasn’t one heck of a good manga. This story has been on fire since volume 1 and it never faltered and never went down the more obvious paths while straight up dealing with the issues at hand.

This has been Hinocchi and Ririka’s story through and through and it never took a step wrong in portraying the developing romance or the problems that they’d have to face if they wanted to be together.

When the clueless kouhai shows up, you might think you know where this story is heading, but so does Hinocchi, and it turns out that you might not want to make assumptions about people. Hinocchi’s faith in Ririka during all this is a real testament to the healthiness of their relationship.

We get a wonderful balancing act here, where our leads have to keep themselves pure while also dealing with the fact that Ririka is missing out on certain high school shojo story beats by virtue of having an older love interest (plus a great little dig at incest romances).

So these two are making the most out of every stolen glance and longing gaze and hugs that threaten to cause Hinocchi to explode. These two compliment one another so well and support each other so much. Even at the end, Ririka is pursuing a dream she had that has nothing to do with Hinocchi.

For all the rivals and chastity and patiently impatiently waiting, you’d think this was all swoon and gloom, but this series has always had a sillier, lighter side to it and it has a ton of gags and dialogue to help keep things light.

Partly this is down to Ririka herself, our fanged gyaru firecracker, candied sunshine incarnate, who might have the best wardrobe of any shojo heroine (I can safely say that this is the only manga where I actively notice the outfits) and has the energy and determination of three people.

Pairing her with Hinocchi was a stroke of genius, as his lower-key tone contrasts wonderfully with hers. It also lets the story really sell those moments when he nearly loses it or gets to properly show his affection.

In a way, the mangaka really uses the age gap to their advantage. How many books have high school protagonists who just can’t get together for no good reason (And Yet You Are So Sweet), or a slew of melodramatic plot twists that lead the reader on for multiple volumes (every Io Sakisaka manga ever written)? Here, there’s a perfect limiter built in that really pays off once that condition keeping Hinocchi and Ririka apart no longer applies.

The denouement that wraps up the story is very cute and pitches just forward enough in the future without going too far and the way it’s presented in the most Ririka way imaginable is icing on a very, very sweet cake.

5 stars - from a subgenre I don’t like came this little series that I loved. With a gaggle of charming characters, two winning leads, and some very clever writing it made me really embrace the whole thing. One of my all-time favourite short shojo series.

(This probably only deserves 4 stars, objectively speaking, but if I went back and read every volume again I wager I’d re-rate every one of them as a 5, given my final thoughts on the story as a whole.)

Es muy dulce toda la serie, aunque en el tercero y cuarto ya comienza como el tipo drama, pero no se siente así, puedo decir con claridad que para la discordia no funciona, pero para una lectura tierna y entretenida si

personally i enjoy reading age gap romance lol (if its of age) but with the circumstances in this manga, the ML was a green flag (read to find out) so i'll give it a pass and i loved the bubbly personality of the FL, it was pretty much an enjoyable series :>

If we could’ve seen them acting more as a couple, I would’ve been happier. Don’t give me a short chapter and picture collage of the three friends with little side notes!

Es un manga muy bonito, no es extenso así que es una lectura rápida. El final fue muy apresurado, me hubiera gustado leer más de ellos dos juntos.
