Ain’t nothing sweeter than the forbidden. Her name is Buttercup. And he’ll kill them all before he’ll let her go... It is the 1930s, the era of Al Capone, John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Ma Barker, and Bonnie and Clyde. When gangsters, bootleggers, bank robbers and racketeers ruled the night and the law. Amongst them, a young bank outlaw is blazing his way to infamy. He’s known as Silvio ‘Bloodshot’ Garelli. Bitter over the untimely death of his childhood friend and his wrongful incarceration, Silvio is a man who lives by his own rules and the gun. Silvio's chance encounter with a colored hooch dancer at a carnival haunts him with painful memories of love lost. Her name is Buttercup. Born and raised in a dustbowl carnival by a midget named Tiny and a fading beauty ex-Vaudeville dancer, she’s got a secret. Fate intervenes. Silvio and his band of brothers stumble upon a rural country town—and Buttercup’s carnival. She fears he wants revenge for all he’s lost due to their brief love affair. But what he wants will ignite passions, and fury, beyond either of their imaginings. And when the gun smoke settles, so does the matter of love between them.

Buttercup's dialect really bothered me. It made no sense that she was supposedly well read, and spoke like she did. Also no one else around her spoke like that so it was confusing. These people raised her. Dialect is environmentally conditioned, not genetically. It seems the author was more interested in playing up stereotypes even if it contradicted with who the character is.
Otherwise it was very enjoyable and I can't help but wish it were longer. Three stars!
First, let me say that I am a fan of Ms. Mynx. I love her writing style and quality, plus she always brings the heat. She can submerge you in a story. I thought the book was decent but very standard and basic for Mynx. She has use the good girl/bad guy gangster interracial with a baby byproduct and time gaps many, many times. I want something different from her. She is so talented but her ideas are becoming noticeably recycled. There is so much sameness in the field that an author should definitely not be replicating herself.
The one change here was the carnival setting and the fact that the 'good' girl wasn't soooo sweet and innocent. I liked that. I know this was a suppose to be a short story but it needed a bit more development. If the time spent on the unnecessary prologue was halved (or eliminated) and put on the plot we could have gotten a bit more story and character.
I don't know why but it took me forever to read this book. Della stage named Buttercup was a "hoochie coochie" dancer. Dear lawd the first strippers lol She was raised by carnival people. I was never a fan of the carnival and this book didn't help. Della runs into Silvio and they have a one night stand and all hell breaks. Silvio is young and handsome and trying to get through life and Buttercup is also young and living the life she has always known.
This was the ultimate shortest love at first sight story ever lol They really didn't know each other and then bam! Their whole future is set. The end of the book was more intriguing because of the potential to have a sequel based on their situation would be a great read. Overall, I liked it but it could have unfolded better
I really liked the premise of the book and the characters. Everything was set up to be perfect but the book just moved so fast and ended so quickly! I know this was set up to be a short story but if it had been fleshed out more and written to be a full novel, I would've fallen for this book hook, line and sinker. Still a very good IR novella, well, even with Buttercup's cringeworthy, hideous southern dialect.
Ok. I read this after reading "Harmony" and was sorta let down. I think I was so blown-away by "Harmony" (the time period, mobsters, Harlem, Jazz music and the characters) that this book was tame by comparison. I would have preferred more character development for Buttercup and Silvio. But I absolutely love the author, Sienna Mynx!
It’s been a minute since I’ve read a story this original! I really liked Buttercup/Della and Silvio together. The story did not drag out too long, and the sex scenes were hot. Definitely a fun read.
I have never read anything from this author but you can be assured that this error will be remedied. There are many authors out there that can entertain you but only a few can transport you to another time and space. Sienna Mynx does just that with Buttercup. I could smell the carnie food and see the bone yard as I followed the cast of characters through this book! I believed the journey of Silvo and Della and I cared about them and wanted their love to win against the odds and the author did not disappoint. This is a keeper and the author is one to watch as far as I am concerned. It is an adult read so be warned but it isn't overly salacious and the adult verbiage fits the story and time. I highly recommend this book
I adore this novella. If the story was longer or had a sequel then it would be a 5 star novel. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case with "Buttercup." I know people say that that mark of a good writer leaves the reader wanting more, but I think that this worked against the author. Even though the story was captivating and I was left wanting more, and as a result the story felt incomplete to me.
I really hope author chooses to make a sequel one day.
I didn't like this book, I read kinky things, alot, but I'm 19 so when I read about an 18 year old fondling herself on stage... I had a "clutching my pearls" moment (just for a second) lol... And the character development just wasn't there for me. The prologue had me confused. Anyway lol I like Sylvester alot, adorable kid.
Even though their love was forbidden in the Great Depression era of 1932, their one and only night together left them inexplicably linked. The first time the small time gangster Silvio "Bloodshot" Garelli saw Della aka Buttercup do her first solo hoochie dance at the carnival, he was mesmerized by her. Buttercup never had a man to be as sweet and caring with her as Silvio was.
But, when the tyrannical controlling, backstabbing little person named Tiny had Silvio and his men taken care of, in cahoots with the sheriff. After Silvio spent time in prison for trumped up charges, as expected, revenge was on his mind. What he did not know was what he did not expect to find when he found Tiny's carnival again.
Sienna wrote a story that was accurate to the time, even using slang common to the era. This story was about a small time bank robber who falls in love with a hoochie carnival dancer that just happens to be "colored". The thoughts of her and their one night is the only thing that gets him through his prison time. His dreams of her haunts him. He just has to find her to see if she even feels the same for him or thought about him over the past 6 years. After fighting his way to get to her they realize they want their HEA and will go anywhere and do anything to keep each other and their family safe.
This book was great, I loved the entire story. I was a bit turned off at the beginning before I realized he was dreamsing but when the actual story started I couldn't put it down. I could have read a lot more about Della's life in the carnival as well as Sil's life as an outlaw during the six years they were apart. A Good Story!!
I wasn't thrilled with the prose--too purple at times--but I love the premise and the setting. The characters were interesting and I wish the story was longer so I could get to know them more. I look forward to reading more by this author.
Buttercup and Silvio's story. I fell in love with Silvio because I think he loved Buttercup on sight. He suffered to love her. She fell in love with him after. The way he feels for her is really intense! Good read!
