About the author

Walter Herries was a Scottish surgeon from Dumbarton. He served in the Royal Navy between 1688 and 1695, but was dismissed following a physical altercation with his commanding officer, Captain Graydon. He was recruited to the service of the Company of Scotland by John Haldane of Gleneagles in 1696 and in 1698 sailed with its expedition to establish a trading colony at Darien in Panama.

Herries left the colony with two companions to deliver correspondence to Edinburgh, arriving there on 18 March 1699. He then travelled to London where he began publishing a series of pamphlets savagely critical of the expedition, drawing on his experience in the colony, espionage and continuing communication with survivors and officials.

Herries is now understood to have been an English spy in the service of Secretary of State James Vernon. In May 1699 he made two clandestine visits to the Spanish ambassador to England, the Marquis of Canales, providing him with detailed information on the Darien expedition. In the summer of 1699 he received a pardon from the Admiralty, allowing him to resume his career in the Royal Navy.
