The Sixth Sense: Book One

Special Agent John Flynn is everything Jerry Parker is not: dangerously handsome, coolly charismatic, and respected by his peers. Special Agent Parker is dedicated and meticulous, but his abrasive personality has given him a reputation for being difficult. When new information on a cold case appears, Parker is assigned to work with Flynn, and the sparks fly as their investigative styles clash. Contact with a strange artifact changes everything when it bestows unusual and unpredictable powers on Flynn… and the two men must learn to trust each other before a killer strikes again.

4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book, and only docked the half-star for the author violating one of the unwritten rules of M/M romance. Usually I'm all about throwing rules away, as long as the story is well written, which this was. But in this case I vote with the majority.

This book begins as a straight FBI mystery, with two wonderfully opposite Agents as MCs. Jerry, the POV character, is a loner, bright, a little obsessive, not good with people and gay. Flynn is handsome, charismatic, popular, and equally driven. Their initial interactions are a lot of fun, and I really fell for them both.

About halfway through, this suddenly becomes a paranormal. It's a surprise, but it worked for me, adding a dimension and changing the dynamic between the MCs in an interesting way. I liked and believed the paranormal aspect and the way it worked.

I really hope this will have a sequel. The relationship between the MCs is definitely at a HFN stage, the paranormal component has a lot of working out yet in terms of how it fits in their lives, and the main mystery is still unsolved. It's not a cliffhanger, but only the smaller mystery component wraps up in this book. So I'll be waiting to see what comes next. And I love the cats :)

This book was unbelievably cute. I finished it in one sitting when I haven't been able to finish anything else for months.

Jerry is a socially awkward FBI agent. He's respected for his encyclopedic mind and his ability to sniff out information. The thing is that nobody likes working with him in the field because he's a bit of an uppity know-it-all. As a result Jerry never gets to be the superstar who makes the arrest. Bummer, right? Jerry thinks so.

John Flynn is the anti-Jerry. He's cool, slick, gorgeous and people adore the man. Jerry is mostly annoyed by Flynn and wants Flynn to take his beautiful self off to go be awesome somewhere else. Unfortunately, Jerry is stuck with Flynn on a case.

I loved it that in the beginning, Jerry was annoyed but attracted to Flynn while Flynn was oozing mysteriousness and awesome everywhere. Jerry was intelectually condescending while Flynn was socially condescending. Even better? They called each other on their superiority complexes.

Now, if Flynn was cool and collected for the whole book it would have been boring. That doesn't happen, though, because when Flynn can suddenly read minds he loses it. Telepathy...telepathy is like kryptonite to Flynn. That's when the book gets better than good. Suddenly, the relationship between Jerry and Flynn is a lot more balanced and these men become one of the most adorable and funny couples I've read about.

Jerry, Flynn and their cats Oliver and Phoenix are so entertaining that I fell in love with them and didn't want this book to end. Somehow, the paranormal aspect didn't seem like taking the easy way out to me because nothing fell into place just because Flynn could read Jerry's mind. If anything, it created a couple more problems. It was delightful to watch Jerry and Flynn work through everything and build a relationship.

If you're looking for a book with lots of sex, this probably isn't the book for you. If you're looking for a book where you get to see the evolution of a relationship from antagonistic to deep romantic affection with a heavy dose of friendship, then this is the book you want to read. Recommended a hundred times over.

This book was a pleasant surprise...

The paranormal element was fun.
The MC's were a nice opposites-attract mix.
The mystery kept me guessing.

But beware: this is a true GFY story and ALL the smexy happens off page and is only lightly referred to.

This book will not change your world. In fact, I read this 2 weeks ago and 1) forgot I hadn't even written a review and 2) had trouble remembering the story.

BUT, it's entertaining-enough while you're reading it (from what I recall) and I works as a good in-betweener. Don't rush to add it to your shelf, but if it's already on there, you might give it a go.

To all the readers out there who decided to wait until the second book in this series (Walk a Mile) was published before starting this one:

description

Seriously, people who make intelligent decisions just piss me off.

Like a fool, I just said la-la-la to all the reviews that said:
This book needs a sequel.
When will there be a sequel?
Like, seriously, dude. SEQUEL IS NEEDED.
I think that last one was me after I read it the first time.

It's not that it ends on a cliffhanger--nothing that dramatic. But there are at least 3 major plot skeins (not threads) left loose at the end.

1. Serial Killer. MCs Jerry and Flynn meet when a new witness comes forward in a serial killer case that has grown cold. However, the author drops this plot entirely about partway through which is just MEAN. And annoying. And it left me feeling like the author hadn't coherently thought out the plot.

2. Jerry and Flynn's relationship. First, don’t expect much of a romance. Jerry is clearly attracted to Flynn but nothing really happens until the end of the book. Other than that, pretty much everything I’d like to say about their relationship is a spoiler. Let’s just say that further development is desperately needed.

3. Paranormal plot. The serial killer plot is dropped right after Flynn touches an artifact in a museum and suddenly develops a paranormal power. Really, after that the mystery and minor romance take a backseat to Flynn dealing with his sudden ability. But how did it happen? Where did this artifact come from? Why did it have such an effect on Flynn? Will his sudden ability disappear? Yada, yada, yada—WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN? Also frustrating is that instead of experiencing how Jerry helps Flynn learn to adjust to his his new ability, we just hear about it. A little too much exposition.

After writing all that you and I both may wonder why I even liked this book in the first place—much less enough to read it twice. But most of my annoyance stemmed from the fact that it read like a great set-up to a series but at the time (about 2 years ago) I couldn’t find any mentions of a sequel. (I feel really sorry for the people who read it in 2010.) Now that there is a sequel I’ll say that if the serial case, the paranormal aspect and the relationship stuff are resolved or at least developed further with a definite promise of a third book, I should have a different opinion. Either way, I wouldn’t be so annoyed by it if it wasn’t a compelling read with great characters.

Jerry is completely anal retentive--the type of guy who notices if you move his tape dispenser from one side of the desk to the other. The type of guy who I would have to put my hands in my pockets so I didn’t give into the urge to pull his shirt from his pants, scritch his belly, twist his nipple a little too hard, then ruffle his hair. I would never do that, of course, but I’d love to just to see him get pissed off. He’s probably about one emotional trauma away from full-on OCD. But he’s also extremely intelligent, probably has an eidetic memory and is constantly annoyed that other people can’t keep up. I find that completely charming. He also feels unappreciated by his peers—it’s a little heartbreaking.
“So”—Flynn seemed quietly amused—“are you Holmes or Watson?”
“Holmes,” Jerry said. Of course he was Holmes. Anyone with half a brain would have to appreciate his talents and skills.
“I don’t think so,” Flynn said. “You want to be Holmes, but you’re Watson all the way.”
Jerry drove in tight-lipped silence the rest of the way to his apartment.
On the other hand Flynn is effortlessly attractive with his flashing eyes, easy grin and louche stubble. He knows how to use his looks to get what he wants, but luckily for the rest of the world he uses it to solve crimes and not, I don’t know, steal your life savings or something. And he’s about as obsessive about solving crime as Jerry is about facts and keeping his cat’s food bowl clean. He doesn’t seem to know what to make of Jerry at first (the feeling is entirely mutual) but he learns to appreciate him and not just for his blow job skills.
“Holmes wouldn’t tolerate an idiot.” Flynn’s words seemed to come out of nowhere.
“What?” Jerry asked, giving his head a little shake.
“Holmes,” Flynn said slowly. “Not the sort of man to tolerate fools gladly. So it only stands to reason that Watson was someone he liked and respected.”
As fun as it is to watch these two constantly poke at each other just to get a reaction, it’s the GFY aspect that’s really interesting. I suppose I don’t give a lot of thought to why the many men in MM Romances suddenly decide to like dick. It just makes sense; dude #1 has a penis, dude #2 has a penis, why wouldn’t they want to rub those penises together? Or in other places? But here Flynn starts out as decidedly straight—though he’s too obsessive about his serial killer case to chase after women. He doesn’t suddenly start noticing Jerry’s lips or gasp at a touch or discover that he’s been repressing a desire for dick. No, with his new super powers he can suddenly see why exactly men might be attracted to each other. It’s like Jerry’s desire is catching—like a cold. He feels closer to Jerry than anyone, might have a bit of a romantic attachment to him and suddenly sex with Jerry sounds awesome! I’m willing to go with that. Of course, I’m willing to go with 2 dudes getting’ it on no matter what kind of reasoning you want to come up with.

Speaking of which, I need some more dude on dude/FBI/paranormal action, so I'll be moving on to Walk a Mile now.

It needs to be said right out that this book needs a sequel.

This was such a different read. The PNR elements were so different but

Flynn comes to come to San Francisco to do extra work on a serial killer cold case and Jerry is assigned as his partner, they end up sharing space at Jerry's apartment, and they are totally "The Odd Couple"! I loved it! Throw in some telepathy, some unrequited lust, hungry kittehs, and hot, wet FBI agents in towels and this sounds so quirky but it's really not, it is fun though. So much fun.

There is not a lot of sex here, there is a lot of thinking about it though which had me laughing. Reading the build up of the friendship was what really made this story for me. I like these guys, I like where they ended up but I can't express enough how this cries out for more.

I could definitely recommend this for lovers of MM PNR but expect a lot of dancing around each other and a very strong gay-for-you storyline.

I really enjoyed this story. Flynn (straight) and Jerry (gay) are special agents paired together to catch a serial killer. These guys are great together. I loved their easy-going banter, both before and after Flynn's telepathic issues come into play, as well as before and after they took things to the next level. I loved how they worked together to deal with and gain control of the powers and how they used them to help with the case. There is a slow build up for these guys - they dont even kiss until 3/4 through the story. I didn't miss it one bit. I do wish we had more detail by way of explanation surrounding the box that caused Flynn's telepathy and maybe some more of Flynn's background. I especially wanted more of these guys after they began their non-working relationship. I will definitely join the hope there is a sequel in the works club.

It was a really good mystery with lots of sarcastic banter between Agents Flynn and Parker, with some romance rolled in to make it just about perfect. How the two came to even meet was unexpected and it was fun watching them. There was really another mystery besides the main one with a paranormal element. I believe that this book was probably intended to introduce the characters and start their relationship off for them working together. I'm going to find the next book soon because I can't wait to find out about the artifact.

Okay, this has potential but it’s a total cliffy!
I wanna know what happens! But do I wanna read another couple hundred pages to do so?
I’m not sure? Maybe?

I enjoyed the paranormal aspect, it’s like that Mel Gibson movie, “What women want” but with a gay FBI/museum twist!
What happened?
Why can he hear thoughts?
How will this influence his investigative work?
And beyond that...his personal relationships?
Like his sudden attraction to his partner?!
Whoa!

It’s slow going...the last 20% was the best.
I think I want to continue...but I’m not dying to jump into the sequel. Guess that pretty much says it all.

A solid mystery and engaging read! Yeah, I put it on the GangBang option shelf because the summary seemed interesting but I didn't expect to like it as much as I did.

I think I would have rated it a tiny bit higher if that lengthy, graphic blowjob scene there at the end had led to a detailed description of Flynn's first gay-sex scene (rather than fade-to-black). But still...the UST here was off the charts for 90+% of the book and so it wasn't that much of a let down.

Hoping for some of that maybe in the next installment though!!

The story wasn't concentrated on the police work entirely, a big portion of it was devoted to accepting and embracing life changes, not simply coping with them. Loved that.

Half a star off for the dirty (not in a good way at all) bj at the end of the book *shrug and shrug again*, and for the ugly cover. Someone, please help Flynn to carry that cross around his neck, and as for Jerry's arm - is there a doctor in the house? The man needs help!

...and what is it with the frying pans on the covers lately?

Review originally posted at Sinfully.

The story is told from Jerry’s POV. Jerry is an FBI agent with an eidetic memory, and an almost compulsive need for order and control of his surroundings. He feels he is stalled at work, where his memory skills keep him behind the scenes instead of out in the field. He has created a lonely life for himself that revolves around work with the remainder of his time mostly spent in his apartment with his cat. He has a love of literature and cooking and spends plenty of time watching DVDs of his favorite TV series. All of this helps him turn off his mind. The same mind which never forgets the details of the cases he works on.

Flynn, an agent from Washington DC, is in town to interview a witness who claims to have information about a serial killer case. Jerry is paired up with Flynn and while he immediately appreciates Flynn’s good looks and charm, Flynn annoys him. In fact, he sees Flynn as everything he isn’t. When Flynn winds up crashing on Jerry’s couch it throws Jerry’s routine life all out of order. We know this not just by his actions but by the constant narrative of entertaining thoughts we are given that run from snarky to jealous to lusting. Flynn has issues though too, many of which result from an unsolved crime in his past that haunts him. What should be a routine interview turns into a life altering event for Flynn and all their plans go out the window. Flynn now must learn to deal with a new extra sensory ability that he doesn’t want while trying to track down a killer.

This book is all story with little steam, but that didn’t bother me in the least as I found myself reading along and enjoying where it was going. The men grudgingly start working together from page one, building a working partnership. They have a good back and forth which is at times antagonistic and other times completely adorable. What really bonds these two together though is when Flynn’s new ability comes into play and he finds himself being protected and cared for by Jerry.

Talk about a slow build! The two men form a bond that changes throughout the book, but it’s not until the very end that Flynn really surprises Jerry. Flynn is straight and as far as we know has never had an attraction to a man. Jerry has been attracted to Flynn from the start, but knows he is straight. When things change it raises an interesting question: is Flynn only now attracted to Jerry because he can literally see the way Jerry thinks of him?

The paranormal element isn’t overdone, but is a focus of a good portion of the book. The story felt balanced with the investigation, the men getting to know each other and Flynn dealing with the sudden change in his life. There are tense moments and laugh out loud ones. I enjoyed the way Flynn pokes at Jerry, the way Jerry starts loosening up a bit and the literary references peppered through the story, especially their ongoing argument as to who is “Holmes” and who is “Watson”.

This is an updated and expanded edition, and although I never read the first one, it seems the author has taken readers’ comments into consideration. The most notable likely is having Jerry and Flynn’s first time together play out on-page instead of fade to black.

This was my first book by Sarah Madison and I’m glad I now have a new series to start on. I’m really looking forward to the next installment as there were a lot of plot points started here and there are still so many questions to be answered. While one murder is solved there is still the serial killer storyline and the question of just what the artifact was that caused Flynn’s change and can he reverse it. Even more important is the question of just what is happening between Flynn and Jerry. Their personal situation changes so much at the end of the book, I can only categorize it as a HFN ending with a lot of potential pitfalls. With two more books already written I can’t wait to see how the relationship plays out between them.

Special Agent Jerry Parker is known as meticulous and thorough -- he is extremely good in information gathering, his attention to details often helps make a break in a difficult case. However, his personality has given him a reputation for being difficult. It is easy for Jerry to think of others as idiot when they do not pay good attention to details.

Jerry is reassigned to help Special Agent John Flynn (from Washington DC bureau) when new development appears on a cold case of serial killer, known as The Grimm Fairy Tale murder. Things start a bit rocky between the two men -- even if Jerry slightly thinks of Flynn as handsome and attractive (but Flynn is straight). However, during one visit to a museum to meet with a potential witness, Flynn has a contact with strange artifact ... and suddenly he is bestowed by a power of telepathy. And then, things get interesting ...

------------

I really enjoy this story!! I mean, after Flynn gets the power of being a telepath, and that he can hear other people's thought including Jerry, it becomes VERY amusing. I just love how Jerry tries to find a way to keep his thoughts of Flynn by imagining him in soundproof booth *lol*. There are so many entertaining scenes that involve Jerry's thoughts about Flynn. Oh, also because Flynn's power do not limitate to human, but reading animals' thoughts as well!! I like Jerry and his random thoughts -- I also love his reading habit and favorite TV shows (YES, Jerry like to watch The Closer, as I do!).

The mystery itself is a bit, uhm, on detour? I mean, I thought it would be about the Grimm Fairy Tale, but turns out that the case changes into a copycat case (and has nothing to do with the Grimm Fairy Tale murder) -- so the old case is not really solved.

I hope this is sort of a beginning of a series. I would love to read about Jerry and Flynn again -- as well as the cats (yes, there are two cats in this book, yay!). This book gives a good start (if it becomes a series). There are some developments that I would like to see, for example how Flynn controls his telepathic power or how Jerry blocks his thoughts or even the answer to the cold case.

PS: For those looking for sex scenes, WARNING, it doesn't happen till the end and even so, it is only a blowjob. This is more of a character-centric story rather than erotic one.

Funny and touching story.I love men who love cats!
I was tempted to give it 5 stars, but the mystery is a bit weak. Many questions were unanswered in this book which is definitely the start of a series - or a sequel at least. And the relationship between the two MC`s just has begun....
I really liked the slow build up - no too tight pants and sparking handshakes on the first pages....

It must be a pain in the ass to write a story with a mind-reading character. Not easy to avoid "thinking-mistakes" especially in the inner dialogue.
There were some lough out loud moments with Jerry trying to avoid embarassing or inappropriate thoughts and a flustered (straight?) Flynn.
I even was okay with the paranormal part of the story, and that`s rare.( I hope the "why" will be solved in the next book) - after all the "ability" helped rescuing a tormented kitten.

The story and the endearing characters gripped me from the start and didn`t let go till the last page.I was sad to leave them and now I`m waiting for the sequel to come out soon.

Surprisingly enjoyable. 3.5 stars!

I can't imagine liking a paranormal book that is a little along the lines of Dr. Doolittle (author's words!), but it was really, really fun. And pretty cute. The romance, that is. The actual mystery... very back burner.

I've never read anything by Sara Madison, but I must say I really like her writing. Something about it is engaging.

Would recommend for a fast, easy little read.

This was a very amusing, short story. I enjoyed it very much and I'll definitely be reading it again.

Jerry Parker is a hard guy to get along with. He's basically a genius dedicated to his job but is so anal he's hard to work with. He's bitter because he's the 'go to' man when people need help but he's always taken off cases before he can finish one. John Flynn is the opposite. He's an adrenaline junkie with an almost perfect case record. He gets the case and he finds the criminal. When they're paired together on the one case Flynn could never solve the sexual tension sparks and their personalities clash. Then Flynn gets stuck with something he never thought was possible making their situation even worse.

I honestly have to say I loved this book. The characters were extremely amusing with their own little quirks. Jerry's knack for always thinking the worse to Flynn's way of always finishing Jerry's sentences. While the characters aren't deep, there are a couple of mentions about their past that make them just this side of real, in their own way.

The mystery behind the story was a bit weak but that's not the main focus of the story. The main focus is the tension between Jerry and Flynn and how they react when Flynn gets hurt and gains an unusual ability. Then they have to learn to live with that which just makes it awkward all around. I wished the book had been longer because it felt too short but besides that the only thing I was curious about was I have to say I loved the ending. It was very entertaining seeing Jerry work through his kidnapping and how Jerry and Flynn work things out.

All in all, I loved the story. I wish it had been longer but I'm hoping there will be more from these two someday. Definitely recommended.

3.5 stars. Rounded up for Goodreads.

This is one of those instances where the overall impression a book leaves behind is greater than the sum of its individual components. Unspeakable Words is a good book, but a far from perfect one. Too many important aspects of the story are left unexplained, a few of the scenes are confusing or oddly structured, and one important aspect of the plot is hastily and clumsily resolved in a couple paragraphs of exposition near the end of the book. But in spite of these problems, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would love to read a sequel.

The best thing about Unspeakable Words is the characters. It's clear that the author feels that way too, as she focuses heavily on the development of the relationship between Jerry and Flynn, while the investigation they are working on is relegated to the background. I loved the dynamics between these characters, especially when the aftermath of Flynn's accidental encounter with a strange artifact adds an unusual and often hilarious new element to their interactions. Flynn is so sexy and funny; I love how he teases Jerry, and how snarky he gets when annoyed or frustrated. Jerry is a irracible control freak who somehow manages to take Flynn's new powers in stride. The erotic content in this novella is fairly minimal, but I didn't miss it. It's fun just to watch Jerry and Flynn interact. The connection that develops between them over the course of the novella is palpable, even though romance isn't even on the table for them until near the end.

I understand this is meant to be the first book in a trilogy, which explains why so many things - including the artifact that gives Flynn his new gift - are left unexplained. I hope Ms. Madison doesn't leave her fans hanging too much longer. I can't wait to read more about these characters.

Excellent paranormal m/m romantic suspense about a very precise San Francisco-based FBI agent who's been shuffled around a lot because he's not easy to deal with. He gets assigned a temporary partner from Quantico because of a new lead in an old case. When his temporary partner ends up sleeping on his couch, his orderly world is disrupted and things start to get interesting. I'm definitely hoping for more books about these two!!

I really liked it, would have probably loved it if it was longer and if the two main characters would have gotten together sooner. Nothing is shown of their relationship really of how that would work out. With GFY i guess i expect more of a story after they get together.

Hope there is a sequel

Reviewed for Just Love
I received an advance review copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Unspeakable Words was my first book by Sarah Madison and up to a certain point, I thought it was well-written, just perhaps lacking in oomph. Jerry is a very buttoned up and highly detailed-oriented agent who doesn’t get along with his peers, whereas Jerry is the hotshot who was flown back into town to follow up on an unsolved case. The book, which was written in Jerry’s POV was (unsurprisingly) meticulously detailed, but I did find it a bit slow in terms of both the mystery and the relationship between the two FBI agents.

The main overarching case didn’t get very far and in fact went unresolved (don’t forget, this is book one in a series) but thankfully a secondary mystery component provided some distraction. As you may have already guessed, the book took a wild leap into the paranormal early in the investigation. I have to admit, I was really curious what the “unusual and unpredictable powers” would turn out to be, and I was not let down. At first, I was somewhat bemused by the turn of events and wasn’t sure what to make of it, but Flynn’s “powers” turned out to be a godsend. Not only did the investigation pick up soon after, but the tone of the book went from dry and a bit dull to light and humorous. Flirty, even. Oh, and the cats helped too.

Despite the ongoing investigation, there was a lot of down time in which the two men were able to overcome their differences and start to bond. As I mentioned, this slowed the pace of the book down somewhat, but just like the main mystery, I suppose a solid foundation needed to be laid down with the entire series in mind. If you’re like me and prefer a more (cough cough) “explosive” dynamic between your crimefighting duo, then this book might not be for you. The heat level was very low, which is fine, but it was also a bit cheesy, and I definitely wasn’t a fan of the flat-out “gay for you” element to the story.

A bit of biphobia surfaced briefly but quite significantly when Jerry (the gay character) attempted to make a distinction between “gay men who sometimes sleeps with women” and… bisexuals. Cue eyeroll. Jerry’s opinion of the Kinsey scale notwithstanding, I wasn’t at all convinced of their attraction or feelings when they got it on during the home stretch. There was no insight whatsoever into Flynn’s thoughts throughout the book including his attraction to another man, and Jerry’s feelings for Flynn definitely seemed to lean more towards lust than any deeper connection.

As far as the case they were working on, there wasn’t really much in the way of teasing for the next book in the series (not that I would’ve preferred a cliffhanger), and Flynn’s powers were also left up in the air. As for Jerry and Flynn, I thought they were better suited as working partners than lovers. I probably would’ve rated the book a solid 3 or 3.5 stars before it took a disappointing dive in the final stretch.

I didn't even realized this was a reread until I started to post a review.

2021: 4 stars for the romance, 2.25 stars for the story, so 3.25 stars overall

This really is a lovely romance, but with the lack of world building, underdeveloped secondary cast, and a predictable afterthought of a plot, it only merits about 3 stars. As I said in my review of the first edition, the underlying plot just lacked any punch. Sad, as Ms. Madison wrote one of my favorite MM stories, Crying For The Moon.

I've always been fascinated by the FBI's profiling department, and, in particular, serial killer cases. I suppose the part that interests me is trying to figure out why they do it versus how. Of course, the more I've studied, the more I've realized that sometimes there is no answer to the why. Since I had been spectacularly impressed with Sarah Madison's work before, I was ready to jump right into this adventure.

Special Agent Jerry Parker is detail-oriented, a loner, an excellent researcher, a little OCD, bad with people, and not a good field agent. He lives alone with his cat and has some definite bitterness towards what life has dropped in his lap so far. When his supervisor instructs him to assist in a cold investigation, Jerry isn't exactly jumping for joy, as he's tired of just being loaned out willy-nilly instead of being able to be on an actual team. He's even less thrilled when he is asked to pick up the incoming agent from the airport.

I liked this book. A lot. I only wish some things were made clear. What I mean is that I would like to find out more about the artifact and see the Grimm Fairy Tale case resolved.

Well, the ending has a great opening for a sequel, so maybe we will see the Special Agents again. I sure hope so.

I loved Jerry and John. Loved the humour and the soundproof booth (those who already read the book know what I mean LOL).

All in all, that was a very enjoyable read.

I simply adored this book. The main characters, the plot, the dialogue and chemistry...just loved it all.

I'm hoping the author makes this a series because there is just so much more to tell!

ETA - reread October 2014. Still loved the book and so happy the author finally published the next!

3.5 Stars ~ I have enjoyed this author’s work on many occasions and this novel had some great moments in it, but Unspeakable Words also left me rather at a loss primarily because I felt little to no connection to either of the main characters. This happens sometimes, and I feel it is through no fault of the writer; rather, it simply was not a novel that I felt drawn to and so I want to be extra cautious in this review to find the merits of this story, for they were definitely there.

FBI agent Jerry Parker is analytical, clever and has a memory that rivals no other. However, it is these merits that also find him failing to really connect relationally to the rest of the agents in his field office. In fact, when the story opens we are told that Jerry is often critical of others he works with, and given his prickly demeanor and slight OCD tendencies, it becomes quickly obvious why he is also a bit of a loner. He hasn’t had an intimate relationship for some time due to a cheating ex-boyfriend who treated him poorly, so Jerry has little idea of what is in store with him when Special Agent John Flynn comes to town to follow up on a new lead on a cold case.

Flynn is one smooth customer. Rarely ruffled, always professional and very determined to bring cold cases to a close, he is also tortured by a past that includes a dead sister who was killed at a young age. It doesn’t help that Flynn’s survivor guilt stems from the fact that he was to be watching his little sister on the day she was murdered. These two opposites are thrown together on a case that will test their limits in more than one way. When Flynn handles an artifact that seems to send an electrical charge through his body, the end result is a newfound ability to hear the thoughts of everyone around him. While this may be great for catching killers, it is so overwhelming for poor Flynn, and he and Jerry try to find a way for Flynn to learn to block out the cacophony around him, and that includes Jerry’s own lusty thoughts about his new partner.

I will say that the author clues us into the idea that this is the first in what looks to be a series of novels. Since this story dealt almost exclusively with these two agents, I am fairly certain we will see much more of Jerry and Flynn in subsequent installments. I’m grateful for that, for one of the main criticisms I have of this story is the shallow backstory of both Flynn and Jerry. Instead of giving us a deeper look into what made these guys who they are today, the story really stayed in the present—instead, focusing mostly on Jerry’s struggle to keep his feelings for Flynn hidden and their time together professional. Due to that, I really had a difficult time getting a feel for what kind of person Flynn was and whether he was in fact bisexual, or potentially gay and questioning. For me, this caused how the two men interacted toward the end of the story to feel forced and uneasy.

The real strengths in this novel came from a well-paced mystery subplot and the idea of a man suddenly discovering he now has extraordinary powers that he has no idea how to handle. I felt Flynn’s struggle with what happened to him in the museum was very real and, in turn, believable. He didn’t immediately assimilate this new power he had thrust upon him, nor did he handle the immense pressure that came with it. Jerry, in his turn, was then a soothing presence for the stressed Flynn—a true turnaround for his character which had been noted as impatient and critical of others prior to this. Both men grew into different people during the course of this book and as they became what can only be described as better people, I found myself liking them more and more.

While Unspeakable Words is not my favorite work of this author, Sarah Madison nonetheless sets up an intriguing new series with two men who I believe will continue to grow and develop, which will only make them even more appealing to the reader.
