Wilhelm Stekel was an Austrian physician and psychologist, who became one of Sigmund Freud's earliest followers, and was once described as "Freud's most distinguished pupil". According to Ernest Jones, "Stekel may be accorded the honour, together with Freud, of having founded the first psycho-analytic society"; while he also described him as "a naturally gifted psychologist with an unusual flair for detecting repressed material." He later had a falling-out with Freud, who announced in November 1912 that "Stekel is going his own way". His works are translated and published in many languages.

Let me just say briefly this work focuses too much on the Freudian oriented sexual side of things rather than on just Sadism in general and goes on and on pedantically (though there are some good case studies in it). I only give it 3 stars for that reason. Rather than recommending it I recommend instead perhaps a very simple summary of this matter it addresses below for an all around good beginning point on this subject. For where to find a book on making sense of this matter so important and recurringly central to life yet unanswered?

Summary

Sadism as a psychological imbalance was removed in the 1980’s from the standard Psychological Reference Book for all practicing Psychologists but it is the most important matter perhaps for understanding Evil in the universe, and for understanding human psychology wherever it is abnormal. Modern man knows little to nothing of it and so suffers in silence under it it seems.

Because of our misunderstanding of it to the point of negligent sleep we recently went from just having a sadist shoot or hang a sadist in old western days (faulty at best) to now having equally as bad: justice systems and media today that tend to blame the victim for “having it coming to them cause it takes two to tango.” This is like watching Piggy on Lord of the Flies get crushed by a boulder for decrying the violent bullying of the other kids on the island and saying “he had it coming to him cause he was instigating and just as much a part of that tango as they were who pushed the boulder dangit.” What kind of modern sub-moral sleep are we under to say such nonsense?

Because of such lack of understanding in modern society schools don’t know how to address what is going on also in bullies except to medicate, ignore, accept or incriminate them (all four of which are just idiotic except the latter to a small and specific degree if understood right but “punishment” only evangelically perpetuates sadism and creates stations of power where sadists crawl into and thrive again, so the latter needs more clarity).

So it is important to understand this matter. But first to carve away other kinds of seeming evil to hone in on it:

I never had a problem with destructive and painful things in the universe and in mother nature (those kinds of evil befalling humans) as though such were an evil incompatible with an all-loving, all-powerful One. Call me a Deist but I just see justice and heavenly ecstasy existing in the universe on a scale of ever finer and further away gradation from this outhouse planet barely getting any rays. Such is the Tree of Life, the down flowing cosmoses of Proclus and the Bhagivad Gita, Jacob’s Ladder, The Ray of Creation and the cosmic tree of worlds in Norse Lore. If you don’t view it like that, and don’t also see things in a long-haul reincarnational karmic sense along the span too, I just don’t even understand how you “could” reconcile the two. But somehow people with their buffers in them think they do (till something really happens making atheists of theists mechanically, or theists of atheists mechanically - buffers still in place in both after the incidents and nothing really learned).

So lets dispose of those kinds of evil being a problem in this universe of ever unveiling lower villa’s inside itself that one must evolve in character back up the cascade of castigations of. But what about evil created by man, intentional evil existing in the universe in beings (not that created by negligent psychological sleep en masse which can be forgiven of course, though also destructive. I speak of intentional evil by a conscious being)?

Here is Sadism at it’s core.

I take a Gurdjieffian view of man that he is composed of different energic centers manifesting as a physical body shell of such and this answers it for me. Call me new age or primordial shaman. It makes the most sense though alone of Sadism etymologically and existentially, as the only evil that truly exists in the universe in a more final sense.

For in this system Sadism can be seen as the satiation of the lower parts of such centers in us we are not supposed to be stuck in the denser slower parts of. Sadism is enjoying watching others suffer and so putting them through things or letting them fall into things or guiding or controlling them into situations (especially using sometimes petty laws and superficial moralisms) to where they will suffer; and then getting our lower parts of our centers fully satiated in the enjoyment of that. It is very viral and tries to replicate itself in others in this way among those suffering who then want to do the same to others or the perpetrator.

There was a dark movie out a few years back with Ben Kingsley and Kate Beckinsale in a Victorian Lunatic Asylum Prison and Kingsley’s character said a great line I totally concur with, something like “all can be forgiven in man and the universe except when others enjoy the suffering of others and inflict it.” Such is maybe the only real evil there is in the universe for to the good all things are good besides such.

Now “Sat” in Hinduism is non-dualism and the satiation of finer cosmic essence in us with our whole and is the opposite up the ladder or vibratory levels of satiation of the lower parts of centers in us because it is the saturation into the finer more good and quickening conscious and conscienable vibrations in the cosmos and self. Sadism, rather, is not going odd to the One (go-od) but going thicker to the ever evening base, the dense and infra-fractuating dualities into the Naraya’s of slow thick re-sending and resentful densities, as Lilly the great Professor discovered.

One can always become satiated in either direction depending on training and self-consciousness as a hue-man, which can only be self discovered not enforced in school children or adults. Such is more-all-ity one way or the other. So sadism or satiation lower is always a choice but only if one knows how to sat oneself with the finer in the other direction.

Without a teaching on waking up or falling asleep based on density of vibration in one there is no understanding of where sadism comes from or how it can happen in anyone at certain times or how it will ever be controlled organically one day amidst mankind. And without this understanding of the psychological make-up of man there is no comprehending Sadism really at all. But almost no one knows this teaching.

However, once one sees this about us we then see we are all ever shifting torts of all sorts of influences in us till we begin the fire of awaking and magnetizing the right vibratory densities in us to finer rather than courser self-satiations of our energic centers.

Then when you next see again another human being taking delight in another’s psychological, monetary or physical suffering or not able to empathize with it, look in their eyes and be sure they are crystallized in the satiation of lower deader parts of their mental and emotional centers in them. This helps one understand. I hope this might help someone begin to investigate true evil in the universe as a science metaphysique.

But how to respond to sadism if violence is the valence of one’s vibrations also down into denser parts of one’s centers that are more material and ever churning? Isn’t the path of the non-violent sage ideal toward such but way too limited as a just response sometimes? That would be another several paragraphs too long for a review to answer this.

At least this given though might help as a short introductory summary for those beginning to seek real answers for injustice and make sense of evil in human psychology.

This maybe helps one know what Sadism is - how it works - a little more if you see these premises and then try them out and see if they make better sense of reality for you.
