Practice Aloha, a thoughtful and colorful collection of stories, lyrics and recipes by Hawaii's favorite folks, will be released October 2010. Author of two cookbooks--Maui Onion Cookbook (Celestial Arts) and Maui Tacos Cookbook. Also marketing director of the San Francisco Writers Conference and San Francisco Writing for Change."
Amazing book! What with all the Hawaiiana that I have been reading and researching this book pretty much provides an album of snapshots taken by a variety of residents, visitors, and descendants on the subject of what aloha means to them. From celebrity actors, actresses, directors, hula dancers, painters, photographers, politicians, kupuna's and kumu's to surfers, students, my acupuncturist, or simply my neighbor or guy or gal next door, they all try to share in a paragraph, page or two what aloha has come to mean to them. IE, "Aloha is a state of grace" "Aloha is love, the Essence of Hawaii and its people" "aloha is a spirit" "Aloha is a way of life"
My own distillation from reading this book and living on Maui is the following: Aloha is the spiritual celebration of family and community and the connectedness that brings harmony to humans with all of. creation and the creator. It is a celebration of life, love and the practice of reverence for the life, the land, the people God has put into our lives. Aloha is living and loving life and the creator/source of life. I loved this book and will make it a gift to my son and his bride to be next month. It's a keeper.
The message alone - "Practice Aloha" - warrants a 5 star rating, but the book itself was just okay to me (redundant in parts and could use some editing). Thus, I settled on a 4-star rating.
There are some passages that are well written and worth bookmarking for future reference and I will certainly try some of the recipes. I love Hawaii and I love the aloha spirit of the people that call Hawaii home. This book is a good reminder to find that spirit and meaning in your life.
Some of the messages were very inspirational and I applaud the "Practice Aloha" movement The messages of love, hope and compassion are reminders that we are are all part of the same race, the human race. The only problem was many of the entries were repetitive and some poorly written or juvenile.
