All that sparks is not gold for Christine Sterling. The luster of her shiny "Golden Years" dream fades when Christine's newly retired husband, Jesse, succumbs to an exciting new hobby requiring long weekends away. Add to this dilemma Christine's dubious "gift" of observation, a super-sized helping of free time, and a double dose of imagination. Sprinkle with peculiar circumstances lurking in the neighborhood and what do you get? Not the glittering paradise of togetherness Jesse promised. You get trouble. Big trouble. Christine has already developed a bad reputation for conjuring wild tales to explain ordinary occurrences. Who is likely to take her seriously when she discovers a bruised and neglected neighbor named Lila Payne? Try as she might, she cannot interest anyone in Lila's dire need for immediate rescue. Something about crying wolf once too often. But when Lila and Christine's beloved Border collie Molly both disappear the same night, Christine dives headfirst into a dark pool swirling with muddy secrets and misery. Her best friend throws her a lifesaver of prayer and she begins to sense God at work in the situation. But even with God's help, can they save Lila and Molly before it's too late?

Catherine Leggitt, first time author of mystery novel Payne & Misery, has done a great job of capturing her reader's interest right at the onset. This is her debut novel in the three part Christine Sterling Mysteries. The second book titled, The Dunn Deal, is soon to be released with a third, Parrish the Thought, to follow.

Leggitt is a gifted writer. Her book reminds me of an adult version of the Nancy Drew Mysteries that I was so fond of as a young girl. The main character in her series is Christine Sterling who manages to find trouble because of her natural curious nature and her tendency to jump to conclusions. Her husband Jesse, has become quite frustrated with her somewhat "nosy" personality, but Christine manages to come across a real crime taking place right under their noses. She succeeds in not only getting Jesse involved but her neighbors as well by tweaking their imaginations and keeping them posted on the events taking place. Leggitt is a master at creating many twists and turns to keep her readers riveted to the page. She also manages to make Christine a very likeable character which helps draw us into the unfolding mystery that provides just enough information to keep her audience guessing.

I very much enjoyed Payne & Misery and I especially like Leggitt's play on words in all three of her book titles in this series. She is a talented author and I look forward to reading her second book, The Dunn Deal. I'm sure Christine Sterling's keen nose for mystery will keep us all on our toes as Leggitt continues to share her mystery novels with her reading audience.

In a tale of mystery and crime, reminiscent of the Alfred Hitchcock mystery Rear Window, Catherine Leggitt brings readers into the small town of Grass Valley, California. This is a town where watching neighbors through basement windows can lead to some serious drama. With a setting drawn from the author’s surroundings and emotional turmoil from personal experience, the characters and situation take on the qualities of a believable tale of Payne & Misery.
The main character, Christine Sterling, feels lost in retired life, unappreciated by her husband, and lonely but for the Bible-thumping Christian down the street. As we come to know Christine further we discover that she is in a situation typical of many retirees, however Christine is no stereotypical woman.
Her adventures range from breaking and entering to spying, and though sometimes done without finesse it's always effective in getting to the truth. Payne & Misery depicts the tribulation and torment of humanity, and the difference between those who live in it and those who choose live despite it.
An important aspect of the novel is Christine’s discovery of God’s plan for her. Since Christine has a murder mystery on her hands and she can’t make the clues appear, she is forced to wait for God to reveal them. It is a lesson on how patience for God trumps acting on human impulse.
The plot is sound and the story, as well as the characters, are endearing. Christine Sterling has just been introduced to us and her next adventure, The Dunn Deal, in April 2012 is sure to be just as inspiring!

I really enjoyed this cozy little mystery! Christine definitely has a wild imagination and comes up with some of the most uncanny ideas, least of which is spying on her neighbor. Her curious nature and witty comments keep you giggling throughout the book and have you wondering what else she can get herself into. I love the author's writing style and can't wait to see what happens in book two, The Dunn Deal. If you like comical mysteries, this book is for you :)

I really enjoyed this story about a retired married woman who finds herself playing detective. The writing was strong and the story well thought out.
There is one mention of the married couple making love (and that is all that is said about it). There is also some mention of some things that younger readers might find disturbing, but if you watch any murder mystery shows, this book will probably feel tame.
Looking forward to reading more by this author.

Good enough mystery, but the main character is a bit too daring-you want to slap her every 20 pages for doing things she should know better than to do.

Catherine Leggitt in her new book, “Payne & Misery” Book One in the Christine Sterling Mystery series published by WestBow Press takes us into the life of Christine Sterling.

From the back cover: Christine Sterling’s loneliness reduces her to snooping on neighbors she’s never seen. When her newly retired husband, Jesse, becomes obsessed with a hobby requiring long weekends away, Christine inserts herself into the wrong place at the wrong time-a sure recipe for disaster. Add Christine’s dubious “gift” of observation, a super-sized need to rescue , and a double dose of imagination. Sprinkle with peculiar circumstances lurking just down the hill and what do you get? Not the glittering paradise of togetherness Jesse promised their “Golden Years” would be. You get trouble. Big trouble.

Christine Sterling has developed a reputation for jumping to wild conclusions. With such an imagination, who is likely to take her seriously when she discovers a bruised and neglected neighbor named Lila Payne? Try as she might, she cannot interest anyone in Lila’s dire need for immediate rescue. Something about crying wolf once too often.

But then Lila and Christine’s beloved dog Molly both disappear the same night.

If no one will help her, she must find Lila and Molly herself. Heedless of possible consequences, Christine dives headfirst into a dark pool swirling with muddy secrets and misery. Her best friend throws her a lifesaver of prayer and soon she begins to sense God at work. But even with God’s help, can Lila and Molly be saved before it’s too late?

I grew up reading the mysteries of Ellery Queen and Agatha Christie as well as quite a few others. When these greats died sadly it seemed there was no one to step up and take their place. For quite a while it seems. Hurrah, the vacuum is filled Catherine Leggit has stepped up to the plate and written a really dandy mystery worthy of the those greats from years ago. Christine Sterling is lonely and bored and in dire need of human companionship. So she takes to snooping to ease her need, however that all backs up in her face and gives her a somewhat less than stellar reputation. Then she meets Lila Payne who really needs help but it is too late no one will believe Christine. Now both Lila and Christine’s dog have gone missing and it is up to Christine to solve the mystery quickly before it is too late. “Payne & Misery” is a lot of fun, starting with the clever title. Christine Sterling is just the perfect heroine, she is somewhat similar to Jessica Fletcher from “Murder, She Wrote” but not quite. The mystery will keep you guessing and the suspense will keep you flipping pages. Get all your chores out of the way before you sit down to read this book. You will want your cup of tea and peace and quiet as you spend the time hanging out with Christine Sterling. You will be glad you did. I am glad I found this talented author and am already looking forward to the next book in this series.

Retirement can be a challenging and lonely time in a woman's life, especially when her husband discovers a new hobby of mounted shooting that includes weekend ventures away from home. For fifty-five year old Christine Sterling, moving away from their Southern California home and retiring to Green Valley, a Northern California historic mining town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains two years ago has brought loneliness and a bit of unhappiness in her life. With too much time on her hands, Christine has developed a penchant for being nosy coupled with a wild imagination that she calls her "gift of observation" which leads her to spy on a neighbor's mysterious activity. Her madcap zany snooping adventure investigating what is going on in her neighborhood leads to the disappearance of neighbor Lila Payne and Christine's beloved Border Collie, Molly. Christine is determined to solve the mystery of Lila and Molly's disappearance. Following her instincts and finding clues along the way, Christine embarks on a journey that holds both danger and faith-based self-discovery.

Payne & Misery is an entertaining cozy mystery that mixes humor, suspense, and Christian faith. Author Catherine Leggitt weaves an enjoyable tale written in the first person narrative with Christine Sterling taking the reader along for the ride on her zany mystery adventure.

Christine's witty humor, vivid imagination, keen observation skills, and penchant for snooping gets her involved in a mystery that is full of drama, suspense, and twist and turns that keeps the reader guessing what will happen next. Christine is an interesting person, her quirkiness finds a way to draw her husband Jesse and neighbors Zora Jane and Ed Callahan into investigating the disappearance of their frail neighbor Lila Payne and the Sterling's beloved dog Molly. As the mystery unfolds, Christine's journey with the support of Zora Jane's compassionate Christian faith and beliefs will lead her down the path of self-discovery, that will have Christine rediscovering her faith and examining her relationship with her husband Jesse.

With a quirky cast of characters that includes a lovable Border Collie, two cats, and a black Morgan stallion; humorous dialogue and interactions; a richly detailed description of the Northern California Sierra Nevada Mountains setting; and an interesting multi-layered storyline; Payne & Misery is an enjoyable cozy mystery with a Christian faith-based theme.

Payne & Misery is the first book in the Christine Sterling Mystery Trilogy.

Christine Sterling has a nose for trouble, and before giving trouble much thought she's in the thick of it. She can concoct a mystery from watching a handbag being filled with leftover food. Her husband, Jesse, finds her insatiable curiosity tiresome, and takes off on long weekends to horsemanship events. A bit too observant in her spare time Christine conjures up scenarios that Jesse discounts as an overactive imagination until events lead to the mysterious disappearance of their dog.

Ed and Zora Jane Callahan are friends as well as neighbors. Much to Christine's annoyance Zora Jane has a penchant for prayer, which Christine perceives as a lack of seriousness regarding serious circumstances. Christine's imagination ruminates visions of suspicious activities in a neighboring house, and she persuades Zora Jane to accompany her to investigate. After discovering an anorexic appearing, unkempt woman at the house the suspense develops. One bizarre event leads to more serious consequences, and Christine increases the tempo in her quest for answers to bewildering questions.

"Payne & Misery" runs the gamut regarding relationship issues coinciding with an increasing perpetual suspense! Jesse and Christine are participating in their own activities with little quality time spent together. As the story develops, and Jesse becomes involved with Christine's concerns in the suspicious activities in the neighborhood, he and Christine rekindle a closer relationship, learning to pray together, and lean on one another, building a stronger marriage and faith. Ed and Zora Jane become more actively involved in the bizarre activities at the neighboring house, and as concerns turn into possible criminal activity the couples become a support system for one another. Zora Jane's propensity to pray impacts Christine's life, bringing her to discern the power of prayer and the positive effects that are produced.

Catherine Leggitt is a masterful suspense author. This book was a complete surprise to me! Having won it in a contest some time ago, I virtually knew nothing about the book before I opened it up and began to read. "Payne & Misery" is not a book that you can put down to go for a walk or clean the house! This book is filled with suspense, just the right amount of humor, descriptive qualities that paint crisp distinct images, and a developing Christian theme that culminates in reconciliation. I highly recommend this fast-paced, suspense-filled, touching story of restored relationships, lessons in discernment, and resolution.

This book starts out with Christine Sterling spying on her neighbors. She is convinced something isn't right even though her husband Jesse reminds her how they moved into a low crime neighborhood. That doesn't stop Christine's wandering eyes or her imagination.

When Christine starts to investigate her neighbors the Payne's that act really weird Lila Payne never goes anywhere just hides in her house and Will Payne who seems sketchy at best always taking off everyday to who knows where. Christine brings a basket of food to Lila Payne hoping to find out what is going on in the Payne house. Lila Payne a scared and deathly sick looking woman, who won't eat anything red, and acts like an abused person. Which fuels Christine's curiosity into what is really going on.

One night Christine and Jesse's dog Molly goes missing which cause's the Sterling's to search high and low for their beloved pooch. They find the dog's tags in the Payne's garage and nothing else. Some time passes and Christina and her friend Zora Jane find out Lila Payne is missing. That along with Molly missing really puts Christine in over drive to find out what is going on.

What they learn leads them to more questions one involving a crime from a long time ago. It takes hiring a private investigator and prior police officer to get to the bottom of what is going on with the Payne family. Where is Lila Payne and where did Molly go?

This book was incredible a great story for all cozy lovers. Had lots of twists and turns I was just drawn so deeply into the story and loved meeting all these characters and seeing what they offered. A definitely great story. I can't wait to read her next book.

Christine Sterling is not happy with retirement in the small town of Grass Valley, California. For starters, her husband Jesse is more interested in his new hobby than in her. Feeling lost and on her own, Christine takes an interest in her mysterious neighbors and becomes suspicious when Lila Payne appears scared, hungry and bruised.

Used to his wife's overactive imagination, Jesse brushes off Christine's concerns, which only frustrates her more. When their beloved dog Molly disappears, along with Lila, Jesse realizes his wife was right. They work together to get to the bottom of things and find them.

This is a light inspirational cozy mystery with a wonderful cast of characters. I must admit, though, that Christine reminded me very much of Mrs. Kravitz, the nosey neighbor on the old tv series "Bewitched". LOL Christine has a good heart and means well, but she does jump to conclusions with very little evidence, which is why the police couldn't take her seriously. Of course, in the end, she was right on the money.

Christine is a character readers can truly care about and a person you can meet in everyday life. I think readers will love her. The story is fast-paced and will keep readers engrossed. Catherine Leggitt has a great talent for storytelling. This is the first book in this series and I am certainly looking forward to reading the next one.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this mystery! I can hardly wait to read the others in the series, and I have already told my mom that she has to read this book next. This is the kind of mystery book that is somewhat reminiscent of Miss Marple and Rear Window. Put all that together with living out in the country, a nosy neighbor, and a curious dog, and you have the things that contribute to an amazing mystery book. This is definitely a cozy, clean mystery. No sex nor profanity of any kind. It is suitable for all ages but will probably resonate more with mature adults (do I qualify to be in that group?)

What I loved best about the mystery was that just when you thought you might have it solved, the author throws in another twist that you may not have seen coming. I was proud of myself for figuring out much of the mystery, but the author still managed to surprise me on more than one occasion. I found myself so in tune with the characters that there were times I was glad no one else was around. I tend to get vocally involved with stories.

I also appreciated the fact that God plays a central role in the story. There were several strong messages in the book concerning spiritual things without being preachy. It's good to know that God even cares about solving a mystery. I've never seen characters in a mystery turn to God for guidance.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

We all have neighbors who could single-handedly be a neighborhood watch committee. Christine Sterling is one of those type neighbors. One day, she notices some strange happenings at a nearby house, and she feels compelled to stop by and check it out. When she does, she meets Lila and notices some strange bruises on her. But things only get more disconcerting when Lila, along with Christine's dog, go missing.

Initially, everyone blows Christine's concerns off. Determined to find out what is going on, she follows her gut and finds clue after clue. Along the way, she discovers the importance of putting your faith in God.

Although there was something very endearing about Christine's character, the mystery of what happened to Lila was a bit too meandering for me. Just as the twists and turns pulled me in, the story would stall for a moment or go off in a different direction. However, Christine is an interesting and well-developed character, and I appreciated her journey and determination.

In the end, it's a light mystery with a charming main character. I especially recommend it to readers looking for a sweet story with Christian values.

Poor Christine Sterling has been moved by her husband away from her children and her friends. Now she seems to be spending her time snooping, and trying to guess why someone is doing what they are doing. Every time she goes anywhere she suspects someone. So when she sees something at her neighbors, she is off on her adventure. In my mind and her husbands, she does cross the line.
When you think things can't get any more dangerous with Christine, her beloved dog Molly disappears, along with her mysterious neighbor Lila. In the beginning, no one, including Jesse, her husband, believes her suspicions. Once Molly is gone, Jesse, and her friends rally for her. She still makes some bad decisions, and it will keep you on pins and needles. You feel like you are right there. You want to yell "get out of there" to Christine, its a wonder she doesn't get arrested.
Will Christine and Jesse be able to weather these storms, or will they be driven apart. Will Christine finally get her curiosity under control?
You will also find some great chuckles in this story. you will be very surprised at the lengths she goes to.
All in all a real enjoyable read!!

I quite enjoyed this book. With likeable characters, an interesting, believable plot and a beautiful setting, Payne & Misery, provides an entertaining and compassionate read. I think the thing I liked the most was the characters. Christine, with her penchant for snooping and observation, is a fun main character with plenty of strengths and weaknesses. When she believes something is wrong, she wants to do something about it. With her husband gone on a regular basis pursuing his own hobbies, she feels dissatisfied and lonely at home by herself, so when she notices strange things going on next door, she investigates and discovers the lonely and mysterious Lila. However, no one else really wants to get involved until Lila disappears the same night Christine's dog, Molly does. Christine must face the challenge of fighting for what she believes in even when others tell her she is imagining things. At the same time she faces relationship challenges with her husband and her own slowing awakening belief in God. I recommend this book for those who appreciate a good mystery with a strong dose of ordinary life and loveable characters.

A mystery interesting to me since it was about the Grass Valley area. The story was fairly engaging, but the main character was annoying. And there are ways that work better to bring God and faith into a story...at least for me.

Christine is newly retired. She feels that her husband doesn’t pay much attention to her as he is more interested in shooting events than her Christine fills her time watching her neighbor’s house. She makes up possible stories to keep herself entertained but then realizes there is something seriously wrong at the neighbor’s house. She finally gets the support of her husband and another couple to help her solve the mystery. Fun and yet such a sad story.

"Payne & Misery" is a tale told by Christine Sterling, a middle-aged empty nester who becomes intrigued and disturbed by her reclusive neighbors, the Paynes. The woman appears withdrawn and possibly abused, the man angry and hostile. Then Christine’s dog disappears, and the neighbor woman does as well. Christine’s snoopy, curious nature kicks into high gear and she goes about solving the mystery of what’s happened.

I dunno. I liked this book’s Christian feel (most of the characters were Christian, and this is a major part of the book as they pray together, attend church, etc). But the plot itself didn’t really pull me in, and there were frequent instances where Christine veers off on seemingly unrelated tangents: Computer language baffled me. Why couldn’t they just write these stupid manuals in English? If only I could find a good computer class — something for someone who knew nothing and understood even less.

And despite being about five years older than me, Christine often comes off as elderly: Movies aren’t what they used to be — now they’re all car chases and explosions. I don’t even understand the jokes … funny how technology familiar to most people could excite us oldsters … I suspected that Internet information couldn’t be trusted. It might be loaded with subliminal Communist propaganda or some other kind of liberal brainwashing. Do most people in their mid 50′s talk this way?

So, not a hit for me, but if you like Christian fiction and mysteries, you might want to give it a try.

A charming, light mystery ala Murder She Wrote, but with a Christian twist. Christine Sterling is the neighborhood busybody(think Gladys Gravits of Bewitched)who watches all those around with a suspicious, negative eye. She stumbles across some neighbors who truly do need watching and help and an interesting, snoopy investigation begins. She enlists the help of her husband( a little unwilling at first,)some good neighbors, and even gets some clues from her loveable dog,Molly. The sad story of her neighbors lives unfold and the mystery solved. At first I didn't really care for Christine that much as she came across as too much of a busybody and a complainer givin to frequent bouts of self pity, but she grows and learns through her adventures. She learns to love God and that He does care about our lives and that what ever happens He is with us. I didn't realize the book was Christian fiction, but was delighted that it was.I didn't feel the book was preachy at all and the author made the " religious" talk quite natural. I think even non-christians could enjoy this book without offense and it may even get them thinking more about their own beliefs. Then again, they or anyone could just enjoy a good story.

Payne and Misery

This was a great book. It started slow but soon progressed to a real good page turner. I enjoyed how Christine was a real Nancy Drew sleuth. The story got good when Jesse,Ed and Sarah Jane joined in. Christine's determination to find out what happened to her neighbor Lila and who killed her was her awakening to the power of prayer. Her faith in God was renewed. The surprise that the DNA revealed in the end was great. That Helen was a real doosie.

3.5 really. Christine Sterling needs a hobby!! this was a Christian mystery that includes some funny moments, intense moments, and ultimately shows we need to rely on God at all times. She's a bit nosey and a bit pushy but her heart is in the right place! I'd read another "Payne and misery" mystery. Easy enjoyable read!
