What are the steps before step one? At a very basic level this simply means thinking about what you are going to say before you say it. The more complex aspect involves planning all the behaviours that will have to occur faultlessly in sequence so that your business or project can be delivered as you wish it to be delivered. I have spent the majority of the last twelve months focusing on how to help people create the conditions that will ensure success. Behavioural science states that behaviour is contingent on the environment of the performer. This means when we are planning out how people should behave we should firstly focus on their day to day environments, even test aspects of it out before we act. In the same way an athlete trains, a musician practises or a surgeon studies a patient before operating, I suggest that people in organisations take just a bit of time out to plan a little before they act. A small amount of additional planning will deliver massive rewards. This book contains a number of real life examples and many ideas of things you could try.
