Love can be ruthless, especially when you’re a Hawke.
You have to be ruthless to be a Hawke. Our empire in New Orleans has only grown over the years. And protecting it falls on my shoulders. Whether it’s in the courtroom or in the streets, I do whatever it takes to get the job done. We’ve already suffered and lost enough. I won’t let anything threaten my family or what we’ve built. But a mysterious woman from my past shows up, with danger in tow. That’s not all she brings with her. The little girl stares up at me with the Hawke blue eyes. Instantly, my entire world shifts. It isn’t just about defending what’s ours. Now, it’s about defending what’s mine.
Ruthless Hawke is the first book in The Hawke Family Second Generation Series. Grab this angsty contemporary romance about a man who will do anything to protect his family, a woman on the run, and an attraction neither of them can deny. Ruthless Hawke can be read as a stand-alone.
Could you please tell me what do authors try to achieve when they choose a male name for a heroine???? If you only knew how frustrating it was when I had to read paragraphs about Jack and I had to remind myself that the character was a female!!!! 🤕🙄
Prior to this, it would be helpful to read the prequel first.
So, I was very engrossed in the story and thrilled at the same time because I was enjoying it, despite the mess in my head with the heroine’s name!! Until the moment Jack (the heroine) had a seizure and Vivianna, her 4 y.o. daughter, knew exactly what to do. “Get her on the floor. Turn her on her side. Keep her head from hitting the floor with your hands.” Vivi keeps her eyes on her mother. “A seizure.” She looks at her watch. “I’m timing it.” “If it goes five minutes, call an ambulance.”
I am sorry but I found it unbelievable.
I liked the writing style and the suspenseful aspect had me very intrigued. However, Jack’s (the heroine, don’t forget) behaviour started wearing on my nerves. While Isaac was opening up to her and planning for the future, she was thinking of going back to her parents’ house with their daughter and leaving him behind. My tolerance reached low levels and eventually I stopped reading.
Also, it would have been helpful if I had read the author’s previous series so I would have been familiar with Isaac’s plethora of relatives.
The MMC starts the book off getting a bj from his fwb, who he claims he'll always care for and take care of (how will the FMC think of that later?). Why do authors continuously give us scenes like this between other characters like it's what we want? Why do so many readers continually accept them?
Anyway, this guy blames the FMC the entire book for leaving the morning after their ONS without giving him her name (he conveniently ignores the part where her father threatened her with the MMC's life if she didn't comply), like he hadn't spent that night also giving her a fake name and glad of it. Like they hadn't both agreed to it being a one time thing because he was also leaving and told her he had important responsibilities at home, and like he hadn't known she was also dealing with stuff at home. He treats her terribly when she's now living in his home, gives her cold looks, barely deigns speaks to her, and is then shocked and angry when she doesn't want to stay forever after a few days of it. My dude, you're not making it appealing for her.
But because they have to get together at some point, he forces her to sleep in his bed even though he's been cold and distant towards her because she's "his." He hasn't asked her if she's single, he hasn't asked her what she wants (oh right, except that time he got angry and vindictively brought her to the peak of orgasm, then turned cold rude and left her like that, because she didn't tell him she wanted to stay with him forever), he treats her exactly like her father treated her her entire life and makes decisions for her, treating like she's too fragile to make them for herself, and he's again shocked when she tells him she won't trade one prison for another.
Okay and the FMC got on my nerves by being an utter doormat to everyone in her life. Somehow, this woman who had to sneak out with her friend for the ONS, and it was such a big deal she had a burner phone for it and the entire city was searched by her parents, was not a virgin when they met (go girl!). And also had other opportunities to sleep around after she had the child? I'm not hating on that fact, I actually love it and I cheered when I read it, I just don't understand how she got it past her parents when one time of sneaking out resulted in such chaos.
Anyway, so this woman, even towards late late in the book, still is trying to take her daughter and go back home to these people who have kept her hidden under lock and key her entire life??? Excuse me? She's still planning to separate her daughter from the father she just found and the family she's grown to care for, to go back to what she now sees as safety. That's some Stockholm shit right there. And like she was so worried about what her parents would do when they found out the truth, but it was such a non-issue it's actually funny.
This story itself would have been great if I hadn't hated both of them so much. There are a million side characters and it's clear they all have/will have their own books, but this didn't make interested in spending $6/book to get to know them. Glad this one was free.

Not a fan unfortunately. So much inconsistency in the characters that distracted from the storyline, the 4 year old child behaves like a baby the whole time and then suddenly speaks like an adult and handles her mother’s seizure, then returns to being a baby again. All her mother does is give her a tablet whenever she is meant to have time with her, which is rarely as it is. The simplistic and overblown writing of epilepsy.
The female protagonist is babied and patronised by all around her, including her love interest. So much so that he doesn’t respect her enough to ask her before going in the back door! 🤯🤯🤯 Wouldn’t purchase another of these and disappointed I spent the money I did on this one.

I read skipped a 100 pages and nothing really happened. It feels like everyone is a criminal or has no morals. But most of all it’s missing a good story line. Because the story is lost into details of nothingness. It’s too slow and boring. So I gave up. Dnf The thought of of having to read another 400 something pages drove me crazy.
Absolutely loved Jacks and Isaac❣️ This book was intense in a good way and kept me on the proverbial edge of my seat…I wanted to know more and wanted to know if they could figure everything out…and I’m happy to say I enjoyed the ride😍
wow, seriously terrible. I gave it three stars until we got to the part where he YELLS at her and yanks her chin to him violently because she tried to save him from death. Seriously?? I don't write bad reviews, usually, but this was awful.
These two had a prequel, which was smoking hot addicting, and I knew I had to read their book. Their prequel was my first Gwyn McNamee book, I know, I know she’s been on my tbr list, and now I’ve read 2 of her books. Because after that prequel, Night Hawke, and fanning myself, I knew there was no way I was missing their story, and it did not disappoint. This book picks up 5 years after their two-night stand. Her dad brings her to his family to keep her safe. And imagine both of their surprises seeing each other again, especially when both of them tried to find the other after their nights together. And there was another surprise too, and probably the biggest surprise, which literally stayed a secret for about a hot ass second with his family.
This was a fast paced read, full of a sh*t ton of heat, emotions, action and suspense. It kept me glued to the pages, and I read it in a day. Couldn’t put it down, and didn’t really want to. It definitely lived up to the hype after their prequel for sure. I didn’t love that they were apart for so long, but then their circumstances were not normal, or even close to normal. They did try and look for each other, but with no actual names they never could find each other. Once he sees her again, yeah he was never gonna let the one that got away go again…not ever. Great read, with a hea.
I've had a couple of Gwen McNamee freebies on my kindle for a while now, but had never gotten around to trying them. When this one came up as free, I knew it was the perfect time since it has my favorite trope, lol and I was NOT disappointed. Absolutely loved the book and ill definitely be delving into her back!og. Fantastic story that paces well. Wonderful characters that are well developed and totally make you get invested in their happily ever after. And fantastic side characters that make you want all the stories 🤷🏻♀️. Sad its not on KU, but definitely where I'll be spending my e credits ❤
Five years ago Isaac spent time with Jack and he has never been able to forget her. Now he is called in for a family matter and finds himself face to face with Jack again, only there are secrets that have not been revealed. Can they resist the chemistry around them when danger lurks?
Another wonderful story by this author. Sizzling chemistry. Isaac oozes charisma and power. I liked the fact that neither knew who each other were before thrown together. If you have not picked up series, this is one you will get hooked on quickly.
Five years ago, Nolan and Jack spent a hot and heavy weekend together, neither giving more than their fake names. Neither ever forgot and both regretted not keeping in touch, but Jack was left with more than memories. Mafia trouble brings Isaac and Mina back together as he fights to keep her safe in this thrilling and romantic story. The Hawkes are a powerful - and large - family, but it's not necessary to have read the other books in this series. The protagonists are wonderful characters, flawed but perfect for each other. The storyline is non-stop sexy and scary, as threat after threat comes from one source or another. Brilliant.
Absolutely soooo good. Definitely some surprises and keeps you turning the pages wanting to read more and find out what happens.
Issac and Jack have such great chemistry that you can’t help but to root for them and hope that Jack sees what’s in front of her face. And the twists that arise keep you on your toes!
This is the second book I have read by the incredible Gwyn McNamee, the first being the prequel to this book, Night Hawke. While it is not necessary to read the prequel it gives a more in depth understanding to Isaac and Jack’s relationship, and what made there reentering each other’s life so intense. Ruthless Hawke picks up five years to the day from the events in Night Hawke, in that time both Isaac and Jack have continued to dream of that weekend, the connection they shared and the what ifs. Finally learning the truth of who Jack is also put into perspective her reservations on sharing any information in the prequel about her identity. In the matter of just a few weeks Jack’s life is yanked out from under her and flipped on its head. Valentina Marconi, the Italian mob Donne in Chicago, Cutter Jackson, ruthless killer and her right hand man, also loving married couple and parents to Giacomina “Jack” and grandparents to her daughter Viviana. Jack dreamed for years of finding her “Nolan” and telling him about their daughter but gave up when it seemed an impossible feat. Isaac scoured Chicago in the days after the perfect weekend trying to find any information about his mysterious perfect woman Jack. Valentina faced with an impossible decision, give her daughter over to Satriano, the most powerful Italian mob boss or turn him into an enemy. Her father whisks Jack and her daughter away to New Orleans, to his old military buddy Gabe, and his family to protect his girls. Isaac just finishing court receives a text from Gabe saying family emergency and rushes back to the office only to stop dead in his tracks. Fate, destiny, serendipity something was at work and after all this time had brought them back together. Jack overwhelmed by seeing the blue eyes that have haunted her all these years. Isaac overwhelmed by seeing the woman that stole his soul all those years ago in his fathers office he is rattled to his core. Little did he know the hits would keep on coming in the form of a beautiful little girl with the Hawke Caribbean blue eyes, his eyes staring back at him in his office. Anger, fury, desire, pain. All rush through him in an instant but one thing is for sure he will do anything and everything in his power to protect his girls from every threat. Will Isaac succeed at keeping them safe? Can Jack let go of all of her fear and live in the feelings, let herself have something she wants? If they win, will Jack and Vivi return to Chicago or stay with Isaac? The world the author creates is realistic, with a touch of fated mates to it. The pain they both went through in the years since they met, brought them to the point they are in now. Makes them learn to appreciate every moment and to fight the fear for something deeper. I can’t wait to read book 2 in the 2nd Generation of the Hawke Family, Reticent Hawke, June 1st, 2023. The mystery of Jude will finally be revealed.
3.9 Stars out of 5 (Standard rounding rules apply)
Who doesn't love the Hawke family and the complicities that come along with them? This is the first full-length novel of the second generations of Hawkes. There was a novella released prior to this one where we see Isaac and 'Jack' first meet. While not a required read before this one, it does give some incite to certain comments made by the two main characters. I was appreciative of having read it because I didn't feel left wondering why something was being said, or feelings that were had. Though, with that said, I am naturally curious about back stories with second chance romances - so having a prequel to this was helpful and not something we, as readers, always get with this trope.
Now after the events in Night Hawke, Isaac and Jack are still left thinking about the other. There was a chemistry there that neither were ever able, or allowed, to find again. Then their worlds were turned upside down when a threat is made on Jack's family, leading her parents to put her and her daughter in the care of the Hawke Family.
The character development of both characters was exceptionally done. Each character had flaws, not just the our main two, and we got to see the growth - this is especially so in Isaac and Jack. It was great also seeing how the first generation of Hawkes interacted with this second generation and you can see where they had grown also through the years (if you had read that series prior too).
Within the stories there were some twists and turns, some of which were obvious and others that definitely catch you off guard. There were very few slow parts within the story, which I found amazing - as there tends to be when it comes to the first book in a new series (setting up everything and everyone, and all that jazz). I find that prequel had helped with that.
Chemistry, however, was off the charts. I would give it a two-point-five chili-peppers out of five chili-peppers. (Please remember this is a personal opinion, and it could be more of less for you.) Time only seemed to help these two burn up the sheets, and there was definitely no lack of attraction. Both in the bedroom and out of it.
I dislike giving away too much of a story that I feel is important, but I will state that there is some great representation of what can be for some an invisible disease/disorder - along with the feelings that come along with having it. I freakin' loved it, and was not expecting it which to me made it better.
One of the biggest issues I had was the confusion of Jack. Her name is Giacomina... we knew her as Jack (as did Isaac), but she was introduced as Mina. Throughout the story it could get confusing at times when she was called both nicknames in a chapter. Personally, I wasn't a fan. I understood why, but it just wasn't something I was a fan of. My other major issue was that everyone acted like Jack's daughter was extremely smart, yet she couldn't tell - or figure out - that there may be a connection between her and the Hawkes? It's commented that the color of their eyes is very much a trait of a Hawke family and that was the tell of Jack's daughter being Isaac's; and them acting like it's a big secret instead of just being open about it - especially to the daughter is frustrating at times.
I would recommend this book over and over again. Being a major fan of the Hawkes and their stories all around I am excited for this second generation and to see where it goes. This is a definite read, and I look forward to the next one.
One night hadn't been enough and after 36 hours he was determined to get her real name to figure out how he to see her again. Law school is over and it's time to return to New Orleans and his family obligations.
But he woke up alone with just a note on her pillow. Throwing on his pants and trying to randomly button his shirt he runs barefoot out the hotel doors trying to find her. He sees her entering an SUV and despite him running barefoot down the streets of Chicago yelling for her to stop the SUV speeds away. Shattering his heart.
Five years later Isaac is the last place he wants to be. Another injunction hearing. The only thing taking the edge off is the judge's clerk getting him off before taking his place at the counsel's table where he hopes to put a stop to Falco Enterprises and their campaign against the Hawkes.
After the hearing, his phone vibrates with a text telling him 'to get to the office ASAP. Family emergency.'
New Orleans is a gorgeous city, but Mina is not there by choice. Her father dragged her out of bed and told her to pack a bag with no explanation as to why or where they were going at this insane hour as they leave Chicago. Now she is gazing out of the window of the SUV with a feeling of foreboding.
Her father pulls up to the building of Hawke Law. Maybe now she can get some answers. But as soon as they enter the office and she sees the two men the sick feeling comes over her again. Even as she is being introduced to her father's friend Gabe, she can't take her eyes off the man sitting behind the desk. Those eyes... this man is obviously related to the man she hasn't forgotten even after five years.
When the door behind her opens, she knows before she turns around and hears his shocked voice 'Jack?'. She knows she finally found 'Nolan'. But her being in New Orleans in his family's law firm isn't the biggest shock. She isn't the only one her father wants the Hawkes to protect.
I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable! This series is intended to be read in order so if you haven't read the prequel, Night Hawke, you are missing background that gives you the depth of feeling in this story. This series is also a spin-off of two separate series in which both Isaac's and Mina's parents have their own stories. I definitely intend to catch up as you we meet most of the extensive Hawke family in this story.
This book is action-packed, full of danger and suspense, and will set your Kindle on fire it is so smoking hot! Mina has not only felt prisoner to her family because of who they are but she has a health issue that makes them even more controlling and protective. Isaac is determined that once the threat to Mina's family is over to not let her return to Chicago.
In the foreward of this story, you will find a Hawke family tree... you will need it. I can't wait to catch up on family history and to see what is in store for this second generation! Highly recommend!
I could not have loved being back in the Hawke world any more than I did while reading Ruthless Hawke. My introduction to author Gwyn McNamee was through her first book written about Savage Hawke, uncle to the main character, Isaac Hawke. I’ve been addicted to this family ever since, and I was ecstatic when I found out she was diving into a round of second generation books. I totally felt like I was coming home with this book and I look forward to more stories with all the siblings and cousins.
The author teased her readers with a prequel called Night Hawke. My excitement and enthusiasm for more was through the roof. I was gutted in that last scene and chomping at the bit to find out just who Jack was. I did not guess, although looking back, I really should have. I think the author played this beautifully and the match up between Isaac and Jack is absolute brilliance. Sorry I can’t tell you more – you’ll have to read to find out who the mysterious weekend lover is.
The spice level is through the roof on this book. Isaac is definitely a chip off the old block. Being the son of Stone, how could he not be an amazing lover. Jack and Isaac took their time reconnecting and I felt the pacing was perfect. The author built up that sexual tension to the peak before all bets were off and out lovers exploded with five years of pent up fantasies and desire.
Ruthless Hawke is an emotional story. Most readers will be dabbing their tears and choking back sobs at the shocking reveals and heart-wrenching twists. Isaac really takes is all in stride, like a true Hawke would. He never backs down and absolutely puts himself out there ready to take on the new world and reality that is dropped in his lap.
As this is a second generation book, I couldn’t help but love reconnecting with some favorite characters from the past. They’re all a little older, they’ve raised their families, and they are passing on the torches. The matriarch of the family, Nana Hawke, is just as feisty as ever, still hosting her family dinners at 90 years old and still gives a mean stink eye to those who step out of line. It was such a treat to revisit those dinners and I look forward to more in future books. This woman needs to live to a very ripe old age!
I loved that this story was a little longer because I really didn’t want to let them go. I’ll have a book hangover for quite a while, and that’s ok. There are more stories to come and not a very long wait, so here’s to each book getting better and better. The author has her job cut out for her as Isaac Hawke has turned into the favorite Hawke by many readers.
Ruthless Hawke continues on with the story of Jack and Nolan, who we were first introduced to in Night Hawke. The two of them spent a wild and steamy weekend together but neither realized at the time that the other was not using their real name. Both must reluctantly return to the lives they spent the weekend escaping from but none more so than Jack who seems to be on the run from someone or something. Once the weekend is over Jack flees from the hotel room and the last thing Nolan sees is Jack getting into a car.
Fast forward five years and Isaac Hawke, AKA Nolan, has moved on with his life but has never forgotten the woman of his dreams. He has become successful in his family’s business and has a reputation for being ruthless both in and out of the courtroom. He is a man who will do anything to protect his family. Isaac is naturally surprised when he walks into his office one morning and the long-lost woman of his dreams is standing there.
Giacomina, AKA Jack, has been whisked away in the middle of the night by her father and brought to his friends, the Hawke’s, office in New Orleans. Jack’s father asks for the Hawke’s to protect his daughter, and his four-year-old granddaughter, Viviana. Jack is shocked when she sees Isaac walk into the office and is as equally shocked to learn that his name is not Nolan.
Both Isaac and Jack want to ask the other a ton of questions, but neither can act as though they know the other. To do so, would put Isaac’s own life at risk. Isaac knows immediately after looking into Viviana’s beautiful blue eyes that this is his daughter and immediately feels angered that he has not been told he has a daughter. However, he must wait until he can get Jack alone to question her because there is too much at stake for both of them to do otherwise. Isaac sees his chance to do so by offering for Jack and Viviana to stay with him. That gives him the opportunity to protect them from whatever danger is lurking out there that is intent on destroying them as well as ask Jack about why she ran off and where she has been all these years.
This book has passion, love, betrayal, chemistry, drama, banter and twists and turns. The chemistry between Jack and Isaac is undeniable and unforgettable. Isaac is fierce and powerful when it comes to the lengths that he will go to in order to keep those he loves safe and out of harm’s way. Jack is full of secrets and has led a life that has left her sheltered from the outside world. Due to the line of business that her parents are in they have kept her protected which has left Jack feeling stifled and more like a prisoner than a daughter. Love this book and the Hawke family! Great read!
After “Night Hawke” left you on a cliffhanger, of sorts, it was totally worth it for “Ruthless Hawke”. I really loved book one in this series. This book starts 5 years after ‘Night Hawke’ with Issac (aka Nolan) in court working for his family’s businesses as their lawyer. After court that day he gets an emergency text from the family to get over to his dad’s office. On the other side of the story, Mina (aka Jack) is on her way to New Orleans to “hide” with a family friend of her father’s that she has never met. Her mother is Donne in Chicago and threats have been made against the family. Until the threat is handled they want Mina in a place no one would look. While not trying to give too much away, you come to see very quickly how Nolan and Jack will reunite after these 5 years. Two people who have been obsessed with each other, in their own minds, but never thought they will ever see each other again are now going to be emotionally jolted. The man she has been dreaming about is now her protector. Needless to say, Issac is pretty pissed after how they parted, but there are many complications coming their way. Can Issac handle being around this woman who has haunted him for so long, and can he keep her safe from this threat? Will the secrets the two have been keeping come out and affect the situation? Will they be able to keep their hands off each other? It is definitely a great story projected just what a small world it is out there. I really enjoyed this book. I thought the plot was fast-moving and interesting, the characters were loveable, and the surprises along the way were great. As for the characters, these two together are just magic on paper. Issac is a confident, over-protective, possessive (in an endearing way), smart, and overall sexy character. Mina is a strong, but shelter woman. She hasn’t been given much freedom in her life, but she still is a dreamer, realist, creative, talented female character. The two have great chemistry even when they are fighting. The intimate scenes, while it is mainly a plot-driven book, are amazing. He is a dirty talker which helps you truly visualize the aspects that are happening between the two of them. The one thing that was a little difficult is that there are a lot of characters introduced and it was really hard to keep track, but props to the writer she kind of include the difficulty in the characters remembering family too. I am excited to read other books that come out in this series.
Ruthless Hawke is the first full-length novel in Gwyn McNamee’s Billionaires of New Orleans: The Hawke Family Second Generation series. I recently finished the first generation of books last month, and I was excited to start reading the latest generation of Hawke family members. I knew Gwyn McNamee would involve the older generation of Hawkes in the new series, and I always enjoy reading follow-ups on previous characters and also getting a whole new series with new characters.
Sadly, this book won’t be a favorite. It had a suspenseful storyline to it that kept me on the edge of my seat. There was also drama involved, which I will touch on in my review.
Things I enjoyed, though, was how the MMC, Isaac Hawke, was determined to prove to the FMC, Mina (aka Jack), that he would do anything to have her stay with him, even after her family dangers were dealt with, especially since they had a child together that he was just now getting to know. I loved how the whole Hawke family came together when Jack and her family needed assistance, and I loved how they already considered her and her little girl family. It was great to read how the Hawke Family look out for one another, not only with their businesses, which are now booming but also with their family.
Here’s the thing, though: the book started rough for me with the MMC being with another woman. Yes, it’s a detailed scene, and I’m not too fond of those types of scenes. He was thinking about the FMC the whole time, but it still bothered me. Then, there was the fact the FMC came back into the MMC’s life, and he had a daughter he was just finding out about. He’s determined to be in the FMC’s life and his daughter’s life, but the whole time, the FMC can’t wait to get back to her parent’s home after they deal with the dangers behind their family. The FMC complained about having no freedom with her parents and was willing to go back, even after being with the Hawke family and Isaac again. She just rubbed me the wrong way.
In the end, though, things do work out between Isaac and Mina (aka Jack), and they get their HEA. I wish I would have enjoyed their story more, it just wasn’t my cup of tea with some of the issues I had with it. Overall, it was an okay read, and I give it 3-stars. I did enjoy the suspenseful storyline and reuniting with the older Hawkes, plus getting to know the younger Hawkes, who will get their stories in this new series.
I’m looking forward to continuing my binge of this series so I can catch up on it.
Single/Dual POV: Dual POV
Standalone or Part of Series: It’s part of the Hawke Family Second Generation series and needs to be read in order. I highly recommend reading the first Generation series before the Second Generation, if you haven’t read those first.
What to Expect: ✔️Second Chance ✔️Secret Baby/Child ✔️Suspense
I read the prequel Night Hawke and I thought I was prepared for this read. I was not. Ruthless Hawke is a delightfully thrilling, suspenseful, and spicy read. But I think what surprised me the most was how sweet Isaac was with Jack and Vivi. That’s not to say I didn’t expect him to be a great guy, but I adored how sweet he was once he moved past his shock and anger of learning Jack’s secret. In audio, I knew Angelina Rocca was going to be amazing. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite female voices and she was perfect for Jack’s strength and vulnerability. Lucas Dixon was new to me and he did not disappoint as the growly sweet and dirty talking Isaac. I couldn’t get enough of this narrator duo and this story. It was so hard to put down.
When Isaac came to work that day, he had no idea a woman from his past would be in the office. Nor that she would have a little girl with him whose eyes are the same he sees in the mirror everyday. Used to doing what needs to be done to keep his family and their interests safe, he doesn’t hesitate for a moment to bring them both home and try to not only untangle the past, but protect the possibility of a future.
I loved the passionate dynamic between Isaac and Jack and also loved how Isaac staked his claim. He was a man who knew what he wanted and wasn’t afraid to be emotional or say what needed to be said. He was capable but not a superhero. I also adored that Jack was neither a pushover nor an overly dramatic character. She was pragmatic, cautious, and thoughtful about her situation and what her future might hold. She was a perfectly understated strong FMC which made her more realistic. I thoroughly enjoyed both their love story and the suspense plot. Plus, as someone who is new to the Hawkes, I did not feel completely out of the loop jumping straight into the second generation series. I will say that I am intensely intrigued by the elder Hawkes and foresee a series binge in my future. If those books are anything like Ruthless Hawke, I am in for a treat and based on the author’s comments, I have a great feeling about my future reading endeavors.
Mina's mother, Valentina, has made enemies with the Santriano mob, and her father, Cutter, has decided that Mina should stay in New Orleans with the Hawke family. Mina is frustrated and packs bags for Vivianna, her four-year-old daughter, and herself. Vivianna arrives at the Hawke law firm and is placed in Isaac Hawke's office. Mina notices that Stone Hawke looks similar to someone from her past, but Isaac's entrance eliminates any doubts. Isaac and Mina used the false names Nolan and Jack to spend a weekend together in Chicago, but Mina left a message and snuck away as her father picked her up. Isaac tried to find her but ended up going home to New Orleans. When he sees Jack, he is shocked to learn that he is the father of Vivianna, a fact that Mina has not revealed to anyone. Isaac volunteers his condo for Mina and Vivianna to stay in but is upset that Mina has not told him he is a father. Mina tries to reason with him, but he feels like he has missed important parts of his daughter's life. How are they going to tell Vivianna that he is her father? The Hawke family is having difficulty building a hotel due to their competitor, Falco, using their brand. Isaac decides to hire a private investigator to obtain incriminating photographs of Broussard, one of the zoning board members, accepting a bribe from Falco's attorney. Isaac wants to protect Mina and be involved in Vivianna's upbringing, but Mina believes he doesn't want to be a father. Isaac is aware that Mina doesn't really want to stay in New Orleans, but he still wants to find out if she felt like he did when they were in Chicago. I found it amazing that Issac and Mina were reunited for the exact reason that Mina abandoned him. I loved the family dynamics between the Hawkes, especially with how quickly they accepted Mina and Vivianna. Vivianna was quite mature and yet her resilience is exactly how a 4-year-old should be.
Isaac Hawke is back home in New Orleans and still thinks of the girl Jack he had the most incredible weekend with. Having used all his resources to find her all her remembers is the head in the back of the black car driving away into the distance.
Five years on and he still wonders until one day after a rather bad day in court he is summoned by his Uncle Gabe to help with a situation they had and will be helping out a friend, as he arrives into his uncle’s office he hairs stand on end and sitting on a chair in his Uncle’s office is Jack after all these year’s.
Giacomina Jackson – Marconi aka Jack is from a brutal family, her mother the head of the Marconi Mob and her father a well assassin for hire. She has lived her life in a castle of security and fear of something happening to her but that one night she slipped away from her security and walked into the arms of NOLAN her world fell away and she saw what she could have, until the faithful morning when her father had tracked her and threatened to kill the man she was with, that’s why she left him chasing after her in the street.
As she sees Nolan aka Isaac again there is a secret even, she now can’t keep, they only thing is does he still want her, and can he forgive her for the secret she is keeping.
I loved the first generation books in this series and oh my the secondary generation come out with a bang. I did read the prequel to this book which gives you the history between Jack and Nolan but I don’t think this is a must to read to start the series. The characters are brilliantly, and I loved the feisty nature of Jack, and the heartbreak Isaac went through understanding what had gone in. The secondary characters are also brilliant and love to see how the dynamics of the family and extended family work.
The story was well written and had suspense and drama which you associate with this family and can’t wait to read the next book in this instalment.
Ruthless Hawke is a Second Generation Hawke Family Novel. Although you don't NEED to read the others to read this one, I personally would recommend reading the other series first. You will know most of the family and their back stories more coming into this one that way. BUT you CAN read it as a stand alone. The Hawke's New Orleans empire has only grown over the years and so has the family. Children are older and into different parts of the businesses. You have to be ruthless in this town, business, and for this family. Isaac does just that in the courthouse or where ever else it's needed, including the streets! Their family has suffered enough and it is on him to do what it takes to keep it all safe. There is something fishy going on though! This weird company covered by shell companies has been popping up messing with their family's businesses. The mob is at their doors, again! And now a woman from his past shows up and throws his world upside down. Mina aka Jack is sick of being dragged around and always in the dark. Sneaking out once, 5 years ago was the best and worst night of her life. But now that past is being thrown back at her at the worst of times. The universe must be laughing at her! She's not sure what to tell him about the past, but with Hawke blues eyes staring them both in the face Isaac and Jack must figure out a LOT of things and fast!. Five minutes can change your whole world. Now Isaac must defend not only his family and it's empire, but also what's his. With threats all around, what will this family go through next?! Can they finally get this other company out of the way? And what about the mob? Again?! A war in New Orleans will defiantly be bad for not only their family but their businesses too. Boy oh boy do you need to read this book!! And all the other sets!! I can't wait to read more!!! And I just learned of another! I am so hooked!! You will not be disappointed in this book, the series, or any of the other Hawke series!
I know “Jack” and “Nolan” spent a weekend together many years ago and I was beyond curious to see what cod come from it and here’s my chance ( cue excited squeals)
Isaac is the legal eagle in the family and he’s quite the ladies man especially in chambers before going into the courtroom #badboyyou#
So Isaac gets a text telling him there’s a family emergency so he heads home and he gets more than he expected, he find a the daughter of a mob boss in his family home and with a shock he also discovers she’s his weekend ding from so many years ago , the one woman he can’t get out of his system , the one no other woman can measure up to …..
So “Jack” ( Gracomina) and “ Nolan” ( Isaac) shared a passionate weekend , a taste of freedom that was short lived for Jack when she had to run away and face reality again , Jack followed , he tried to catch her but to no avail and the rest is history or it is until her family is in their family office , in need of protection . I must say these 2 keep their poses well and their recognition of each other was kept well hidden from her family but no so much those of the Hawkes….
So while danger is lurking Jack and Nolan have a lot to figure out and their new little family tries to live their lives amidst the chaos around them and while I’m thrilled I can’t help be be afraid at the same time because a man who loves the way he does makes him a target …..
I love the Hawke family ❣️they’re fierce , protective , loving and intense ! This time round there was tears , endearing moments , steamy moments and be still my beating heart moments ….
P.S. Little Vivianna is such a cutie and has her daddy wrapped around her little finger ( just love how tough Guy goes soft guy) and Fluffy is close on her heels 😉
I must say Jade has piqued my interest , why is it that she hates being a Hawke ?! Guess I’ll have to wait and see to see what happens next ❣️😱
Wow. This book was amazing. After the cliff hanger of the first part of Isaac and Jack's story I was read for this however the author total blew my socks off. This story is full of angst, danger, passion, old passions rekindling and secrets finally out in the open.
Isaac and Jack shared one weekend together which changed their lives completely. Both used fake names and both were hiding secrets about their families. When Jack leaves Isaac heartbroken they both thought they would never see each other again. But boy were they wrong. Fast forward 5 years and when Jack's family receives threats Jack is sent to stay with the Hawke family for her own protection. Little does she realise that a member of that family is Nolan the man who changed her life forever. What follows is a story of secrets, betrayal, danger and uncovering truths that will change everyone's lives forever. Even thought the feelings a passion is there still Isaac is wary however he knows Jack is the woman for him and whether she likes it or not she will be is. He will stop at nothing to protect her from the threat against her and also the threat that may come from a source closer to home.
Jack thought she was protecting Isaac all those years ago by leaving and not looking back. After all this time can she make Isaac understand her reasons for what she did and could he ever forgive her? Now they have found each other again can they finally be happy or will the dangers waiting for them prove to be too much.
I was so invested in these characters. My heart cried for them both at parts and left me wanting to bang their heads together in others. I can't wait to see what else the Hawke Family have in store for us
Ok I’m new to this author and this haven’t read what I assume is the first generation series of Hawke books.
So while all the older generation names are confusing to me and I don’t know who is the parents’ age and who is second generation sometimes, it’s clear there are a lot of them and they’re a close family.
Isaac and Jack were definitely a couple that had huge chemistry. And for the most part I liked them being together. I did think Isaac missing out on Viviana’s first four years was awful and definitely Jack’s fault more than his. But I guess that doesn’t matter.
While the story was interesting enough, the sex is pretty constant. And pretty much makes up 3/4 of the story. Jack and Viviana are brought to the Hawkes for protection from some mob guy who wants to hurt Jack’s mob boss mother. Coincidentally, Jack and Isaac had two nights together five years ago resulting in Viviana but haven’t seen or heard from each other since. So the story is about whether or not Jack will be with Isaac and if her life will ever be normal.
I really felt some parts of the story were stupid though. Jack’s waffling annoyed me. How she could act as if she didn’t want to be with Isaac was dumb. And then the whole didn’t realize they might check hospital records seemed like a newb oversight. Aren’t the Hawkes supposed to be “good” at their jobs. How did not a one of them think about that. It’s the first thing I thought of when 911 was even mentioned. But ok, whatever. Then the end was so anticlimactic. Isaac shows up to save the day. I expected it to be a drawn out and tougher scene for sure.
Not sure if I’d go and read all the Hawke series books based on this one, but it’s something I’d consider, at least if I come across another free one.
I read the prequel to this story about lawyer and New Orleans native Isaac Hawke who is part of the Hawke family enterprise and Giacomina Jackson-Marconi only child of the head of the Italian Mob Valentina and her husband Cutter. They met in Chicago when Isaac aka Nolan was going to law school and Giacomina aka Mina aka Jack had broken away from her bodyguards and went to a bar with her friend and ended spending two days with Nolan. Their story picks back up 5 years later when Jack is brought with her daughter Viviana to their friends the Hawkes especially Gabe to protect her by her father Cutter Jackson while their family in particular his wife is being hunted by other mob families so that they can kill her and take over her place in Chicago and is coming from Italy to Chicago and wherever else he can establish his mob influence. We have them meeting for the first time five years later and him finding out that he has a four-year-old daughter he knew nothing about. They did not give each other their real name so there was no way for her to actually to find him and let him know that he was going to be a father. This story is so full of angst, lies, betrayal and so many secrets. I loved it because of the issues that were presented in this story, especially epilepsy and the story of how life affects the children of Mafia bosses and those that have family enterprises and what is expected of them. Loved this book so much but it means I need to go back to see how it all got started so I am. I would definitely recommend this book. I have read books by Gwyn McNamee, and I don't know why I have waiting this long to read some by her again but sometimes I just get stuck on one author or another now I am obsessed with Gwyn.
