It's the second in my series and I'm really happy with it. Erec has to save his siblings and missing dragon babies while risking his life in a terrifying quest to be king. He's getting chased by a secret admirer who is not who she seems. And he has to fight in a battle against monsters who want to destroy everything ... but they are not who Erec thinks they are!!!!

In The Monsters of Otherness, Kaza reaches her writing maturity in this novel, with no flaws of any kind. Erec now must start on his quests and faces some interesting challenges. Unlike the first novel Erec Rex: The Dragon's Eye, there was no predictable element. You know at the very beginning that young Erec is destined to become a King in this wonderful world of magic. I won't provide any spoilers and will only say that the book left me wanting the next one to be published and available - Kaza tells me it will released in October (2008).

Like the first book in the series, I read this in about seven hours and couldn't put it down. I need to stress that despite what some reviewers have said, Erec Rex is not Harry Potter in any way. Harry is constantly assailed with doubts and while Erec has his weaknesses, they are not the same as Harry's by any stretch of the imagination.

This story covers the first two (sacrifice and justice) of twelve quests (a reference to Hercules) and Erec gains some wonderful gifts along the way to proving he is worthy of his destiny. I have a feeling that his friend Bethany is more than just a friend, but we will have to wait to find out.

Yes, there are unanswered questions, but that's okay. These stories are part of a larger whole and like any good story; these novels are intertwined with each other. The first introduced us to Erec and this second now provides us with more of his history and his ultimate goal. The influence of unlimited power and its corruption is a very strong theme and Erec's Achilles' heel. His youth also makes him vulnerable to the lies of man (or beast) and his courage in facing these threats to his mortality is a worthy example to young readers.

Update: I originally read this in 2008 (also the date of my original review, above) and actually liked it better than the first novel. Since then, Simon and Shuster picked up Kaza's novels and are in the process of reissuing them. I picked up this book in its Kindle format and while I enjoyed it, it felt a bit on the "stilted" side. It read okay, but it felt artificial in nature, something that usually doesn't strike me while reading it.

Regardless, the reread held up very well and I was happy to see that the story stayed fresh, despite its slightly stilted feel. Erec's challenges are more apparent as he faces enemies and starts to become aware of his own potential and heritage

I. LOVE. IT.

This book is simply amazing. I really enjoyed this book to the fullest. All the elements I need in a good read is in this series. I am an MMORPG player and I can relate to the quests. No boring moments. Every detail and events are up to my expectations. No, it is not predictable. That's what so great about this book... I can't foretell the turn of events. However in the end you'll know that Erec Rex will win eventually but you just don't know how.

The secrets are still secrets although I have a good guess on who Erec Rex really was. It just thrills me to the bones. OMG, I need to get the third book quickly. Kaza, You are a wonderful author and I thank you for creating the realms of Erec Rex. I just wonder...uummm...where to find the Vulcan Store? (tee-hee).

I like how Erec Rex do not rely entirely on magic. I liked how he was vulnerable to the scepter. I liked how he doubts his mother, the Seer, and the King. He was after all, a kid, even though destined to be a King, he had some weak moments. I liked how the sidekick changed this time and it was really a WOW! Jam was something and I wish to have a butler who has a gift to serve.

I like the dragon quests. I am so happy with this series. The characters were perfect for the roles. I gave it a seven out of five!

Belum lagi sifat Erec Rex yang sumpah ngeselin habis, sok tahu, haus kekuasaan, jadi benci tapi cinta gitu sama Erec Rex hahahaha

Masih sama dengan buku pertama-nya, gue tetep cinta Aoquesth si naga baik hati.

Kenapa epilognya mesti sedikit-sedikit sih...soal rahasia kembar tiga pun masih jadi misteri besar.

This book had me sighing and rolling my eyes in some parts.

Hardly any improvement from the first book...actually worse than the first book...

Dull & bland characters with no depth of slight development.
None of the characters fill the story out-they say things that don't suit them or fit with them, there is hardly any explanation to the characters thoughts/behaviours/beliefs/stories/background-yeah they are all very two dimensional and very flat!

Even those on Erec's side-their actions/words/behaviours don't fir in-it's like Kingsley decided to ass whatever she could-in a desperate attempt to write a story, without thinking of a plot & the intricacies within one.

The scenes don't fit together well, Erec meets some character, character says/does something which causes Erec to seethe with anger-for no apparent reason.
If you're going to describe a character getting angry, then at least build up to it-don't just throw it in for random.

It was obvious who the bad character was soon after Erec met them.

As for the cat's name Cutie Pie-I mean seriously, what kind of retard names their kitten this name? It was so lame and pathetic that it had me cringing-if I were the kitten, I'd wait until I could grow up & kill the human that gave me such a pathetic name-eurgh!!??!!

Then we have the three Stain children siding up with Baskania-even then hardly any explanation as to why this Baskania should choose to side with children-I mean, seriously? There should be adults you can side with, without having to rely on children so much-I just found it weak and pathetic.
Then the Stain boys are nasty-yeah we know that, but there is just too much of the nastiness, why not try to develop the nasty characters-tell us what their background is/what their family life is like etc.
Baskania is weak-not believable as a bad character at all, his words sound really lame, he comes across as a very weak character, I'm sure a baby could beat the living daylights out of him, and not even get a scratch.

There is just too much of Erec finding himself in losing situations-it just gets too much after a while and doesn't add to the story.

So no development of any of the characters, way too much tell, you need a microscope for any of the show, bland characters, bland story, not paced well, way too much of random scenes-at least you've been warned!

“Erec Rex and the hunt for the truth” by Kaza Kingsley, is so far my favorite in the series. The book starts out by Erec having a cloudy thought and forces him to go back to Alypian. When he gets there he accidentally runs into baskina and he has to call dragons for help. He then goes on some more quest that are extremely hard and one thought to be imposible and then to complete one of the quests he has to go back in time and when he goes back he finds out about his past and it becomes a disaster.
This was an amazing book and it was kind of like the last book in the series because Erec found out who he really is. But it also had some downs like how it was again pretty obvious what would happen and who he is. Erec and some other characters were pretty dumb because of the author like he would discover something and you would immediately realize then they would realize it a couple of chapters later. Some of the magical items and powers are way too overpowered and super unrealistic again like how there's this thing that if you drop it it explodes and it grants you a wish and he has a whole bottle of them. But some good things in the book were how he got to go back in time and he explained really well. There are also some cool parts about how they go on a quest and have to go to to a place in Greece and they also go to africa.
This book was decently well written and had a lot of pretty cool plot twists. I think the theme of this book was to do things with your friends because in the book he wanted to do dangerous things alone. His friends didn’t want him to go alone cause it was dangerous. In the end it turned out that if he didn’t go with his friends than he probably would have died. Sometimes brave people do need the help of their friends.

Another solid middle-grade fantasy here. I’m quite enjoying the Erec Rex books – I like how this one further explores disinformation and prejudice in the magical world, which is especially impressive in a book published in the 2000s before “Fake News” really took hold.

Kingsley did good work here walking back the omnipotence of her magic scepters – there is now a cost to the magic, which becomes a compelling limitation on the hand-wavey “fix everything!” move we got at the end of the first book. I think the whole magical world in the series is much more sound for Kingsley having done the work there.

I will say I was supremely annoyed by Erec’s lisping tutor – his dialogue was SO irritating to read. Honestly, I wish the author had just told us “he talks with a lisp” and written readable dialogue.

Erec is credulous to the point of eye-rolling, but given that he’s twelve or thirteen years old, I don’t hold that against him. In fact, it could be really interesting character growth to witness, as he becomes more circumspect in trusting people rather than listening to whoever spoke to him last. With two installments down, I think this is a promising series.

Kazan appears to have settled in to this series beautifully. While I enjoyed the first book as a promise of potential in a series, I enjoyed this second book for all the character development and world building. Kaza is proving to be able to pull readers into her world, where I loved existing. Very well done-I’m excited to keep reading.

I really liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a good book, but make sure you read the first book first (obviously) so ya. I liked how he thought he was going to fight the monsters, but then he found out the monsters where the humans.

I really liked the book. I would suggest it for people who are in to monster stories. I think this book is good for teens and up. I read it without reading the first book and still understood what was going on, so you dont need to read the series in order.

When I started the second book in the EREC REX series, I wasn't really sure what to expect. There were all kinds of things I already knew should happen, things I wanted to see happen, but there were some things I really didn't see coming.

It's been a month since the contests ended and Erec has spent that month in "Upper Earth" recuperating with his family, at least until he receives a letter from his friend, Bethany, that says he must return to Alyphium and begin the quests - or he will forfeit his rights to be king. And with the Stain brothers and Rock Rayson gunning for becoming the next kings, Erec cannot let that happen.

Erec returns, unaware of how public opinion views him, King Piter, and the events that happened the month before. The public believes that Erec is an impostor, that he tricked the Lia Fail, and that the three other boys are the rightful winners of the contests. Erec also returns with the internal debate of whether he can handle the scepter or if the power of the scepter will destroy him.

There are many twists and adventures that Erec encounters, some planned, some not. The quests are deadly and terrifying, but as Erec continues he learns more and more about himself and about the magical world he has entered. There's also the matter of all the baby dragons having gone missing and finding them in time to save them and discover who has taken them.

Erec also has to delve into The Substance, the very thing that holds their world together, the very magic that encompasses their entire lives. There is something about this world that Erec is drawn to that just seems to encapsulate the reader's attention. The creatures, the people, the places all seem like something straight out of the imagination of someone that's read too many fairy tales, but that's because they basically are. And it's a good thing!

This book could possibly stand on its own, because Ms. Kingsley does seem to go back and do a bit of a recap about things, which I see as a good thing, especially for someone who doesn't go into reading the book directly after the first one.

Along with the adventures, there is still plenty of humor and the characters are taken deeper with this book. I have now officially found myself involved in another series that is going to keep me waiting for the next book. It's easy to become involved with the story and care about the characters. I even found myself beginning to tear up at a few parts.

There is something for everyone within this book, whether it's adventure, family, friendship, amusement, or just a story you can get lost in. Most of the time, the second book in a series lacks from the first, and while this one does a little, it doesn't disappoint and still left me wanting more. I found myself with more questions than I started with, and most of them were different questions!

So, while I did get some questions answered, there were a lot that I was left with. There are six more books slated for the series, so there is plenty of time to get my questions answered! And I can't wait to find these answers. There is so much good about this series so far, that I already know I will spend the next few years involved in these characters - and I can't wait!

I forgot how annoying middle grade books can be. One stupid decision after another, dangerous after danger where the tweens are on their own or trust no one but themselves so they might as well be on their own, and make rash decisions that get them into even more trouble.
Sure, there was some excitement and adventure. But mostly I just wanted to scream out of sheer frustration.
Rereading this book did bring back memories of my childhood, when I remember reading and enjoying this and other similar books like The Merchant of Death and Midnight for Charlie Bone. Also, yes, it did somewhat remind me of Harry Potter, or at least reading it as an adult did.
I have fond memories of reading this when I was younger, though. And, there’s a fair amount of excitement, and the story even has its own unique magical twist.

Middle graders who are looking for exciting magical adventures will enjoy this book.

Erec Rex is finding home life a little more flat than he remembered. After facing down a man trying to take over the world, besting King Pluto's dungeons to rescue his mother, and somehow impossibly winning a contest to become king, life with his mom and his family doesn't seem quite as interesting. Then he finds out certain people are campaigning to call his settling down a forfeit---so it's back to the Kingdom of Keepers, back to magic, and back to an increasingly complicated and messy life.

One of my favorite things about Erec Rex is that he's got his fair share of embarrassing problems. His use of the scepter has left him with a want of it that runs so deeply he's sure becoming king will destroy him. He's not really a people-pleaser, but he cares too much what other people think about him (and he gets angry when the crowds, rather than showering him with adoration, accuse him of cheating Balor Stain out of his rightful victory). Erec uses his powers mostly for good, but there is one particular instance where he uses them out of rage. And he often chooses to trust people who tell him what he wants to hear rather than people looking out for his best interest.

Erec retains his talent for burying himself in zany situations, and there are plenty of chuckles outside his antics. From a scroll that forces anyone who holds it to speak only the truth to the revered well that connects to the Fates to the sly grins at some common turns of speech, this book rejoices in the absurd. Jam, head butler accidentally co-opted into helping Erec with his second quest, is a stitch as he maintains his poise despite their trek through the wilderness.

The only real downside to the story was how flat Balthazar Ugry remains, and how Erec always immediately blames him despite having a far more credible suspect. Ugry hardly shows up at all, so his role as would-be villain is a lot less convincing than the previous book.

Overall this book has cemented the series as a personal favorite. The rest of the quests can't come soon enough. I rate this book Highly Recommended.

I have finished reading this second installment of Erek Rex, The Monster of Otherness.

During the course of reading this book, there are mysteries provided that left us guessing. I guessed right for most if not all, around 5 chapters before it was confirmed. This is in no way a testament to how well my deduction was or how obvious Mrs. Kingsley's writing was. I think I just have read some more fantasy story than I should have. Again, this book maybe meant to be read and enjoyed by someone younger than me and for that category, this book should be more enjoyable.

The writing is consistent, and the character of Erek himself is consistent. An interesting and somehow believable boy plunged in the depth of magic world with impossible tasks in front of him.

And when things are not what they seem nor they are what they should be, some people will do what Erek do.

The plot itself and how it was executed is quite okay. I've read stories with more twists and turns, but some might not be as believable as this one.

Certain details bugged me, like Erek's reaction to him meeting some monsters, or how somethings put together so abruptly and everyone in the magic universe are okay with it. The author provides some explanations but to me they still seemed a bit, how to put it, not running smoothly. Again, it's probably my own problem. Many will go with it undisturbed.

Okay, summing up: good story, okay storytelling, some derivative concepts although some original ones are there, and let's be realistic, nothing is free from derivative and feel-alike except for the exceptional ones, and a refreshing take on magic world and monsters (dragons are included, woo hoo).

I think it's a three to four stars. But it didn't have that complexity or the surprises needed to make a tome highly respected. Some books are less than this, some are more. For the sake of fairness, let me give it three stars, for the so so entertainment value I got after reading it.

I recently read The Monsters of Otherness by Kaza Kingsley. This book is a sequel to The Dragons Eye. In this book, Eric Rex travels back to Alipium to take on his trials to become the king because if he doesn't his worst enemies would become kings instead. He starts getting letters from a secret admirer and in one of his trials, he meets them.

I really liked this book because it was like the first one and had a big turning point where a huge change happens. There was more mystery in this book than the first one, but both had enough action and adventure.

I recommend this book for fifth grade and up. I would even recommend it to adults because it has a good plot.

Well, buku kedua Erec Rex terbit juga nih...lama nunggu terjemahan Indonesianya
