Rule number one: humans and vampires don't co-exist. One is the hunter and one is the prey. Simple, right? Not for newly-turned vampire Alyssa. A surprise confrontation with Santino Vitale, the Acta Sanctorum's most fearsome hunter, sends her fleeing back to the world she once knew, and Fallon, the human friend she's missed more than anything. Now she has some explaining to do. However, that will have to wait. With the Acta Sanctorum hot on their heels, staying alive is more important than educating a human on the finer points of bloodlust.

Hunters & Prey is my 3rd book of Katie Salidas. And I must say she doesn't disappoint me. Her other two books were short paranormal erotic novellas and she hooked me from there. So when she contacted me and asked me if I'd be interested in reading "Hunters & Prey" I immediately agreed. Now as GCR followers, you guys should know I am NOT really into paranormal books. But I must admit with Katie Salidas along with another author has lured me into the genre. And to my surprise, I'm really enjoying the genre =)
So in Hunters & Prey you have Alyssa a fairly new vampire that is roughly adjusting to her new life while missing lots of things of her mortal life. Mostly including her BFF Fallon. As how else to welcome her into this new life but to have conflicts with a strong hunter. Someone out to kill vampires. After a huge blowout, they come face to face again. And not knowing what to do Alyssa runs back to her old hangout spot and bumps into her BFF Fallon. Where she has to explain her whereabouts and such, which ended up in a confession as to what she really is: a vampire.
But by revealing to a mortal that she's a vampire she breaks the law. No mortal should be part of the immortal world and vice versa. Little did Alyssa know that by revealing her new identity she sets up Fallon for nothing but trouble. And that's where the action begins.
I read this book in 3 days. I would have read it quicker but I have a child that demands too much attention. This is a great read. I love how Alyssa and her clan pulled together through all the drama. Yes certain members in her clan gave her grief like "Nicholas" (He's my favorite character. I LOOOVEEE his personality) but everything is done together as a family. I just loved this book. If I keep on talking about it, I'd probably give spoilers and that's the last thing I wanna do. Katie has turned this paranormal book to fit today's views and she just lures you in. This is definitely a "Good Choice for Reading". So if you're looking for an action packed paranormal book then you must buy this book. You won't be disappointed. I give this one a 5 out of 5 stars.
Katie Salidas writes another great adventure for Alyssa and her clan called Hunters Pray. I enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the next one. Again you get a mix of Urban Fantasy, romance and Dark Fantasy. I love how Kate can mix these genre’s together and write a good book that each one can enjoy.
Alyssa is still trying to settle in her new vampire life and she finds she is having awful dreams. One night while she is out feeding she runs into trouble and runs to her old hangout where her and Fallon always went to when she was human. From there Alyssa causes a turn of events that gets her and her old friend Fallon into deep trouble with the vampire hunter Quentin. Quentin has a suspire for them and they are very hard to kill.
I loved Fallon coming into the story and will be looking forward to reading more about her in this next book. You get to read the rest of the vampires in the clan and you also read Alyssa and Lysander romance gets deeper this time around.
I recommend this book to UF readers that doesn’t mind a good sex scene and romance readers that likes reading some on the dark side.
Book 2 in the Immortalis series. Hunters and Prey takes place a while after the battle with Santino. The one that brought Lysander to the brink of death. Alyssa is still young and learning the ways of the vampire. She feeds only on those who deserve death; the dirt bags that prey on the innocent and had once tried to kill her, if not for Lysander she would be dead.
One night while Alyssa is out feeding she gets a feeling of being watched; still young in the art of all things vampire, she's still able to sense that a vampire is nearby. She gets a strange feeling that she knows who is watching her and with that she takes off running and instinct takes her to a place she shouldn't be...Her old hangout. When she realizes she really should turn away from the Cafe, her former best friend Fallon spots her and that's when things get interesting.
Alyssa is left wondering how to explain her being missing for so long and her odd behavior and appearance and when nothing she can think of can explain away what is going on with her she is left with no choice but to confide in Fallon and tell her the truth. Fallon is in shock but takes the news rather well but with the knowledge of Alyssa's new life comes responsibility and great danger. She is thrown into a world of vampires and the war between them and the Acta Sanctorum, and Lysander is not happy about this...especially when he realizes that Alyssa was right and Santino is back and chasing after Alyssa.
With the truth of the vampire world now on Fallon's shoulders, it puts a rift between the clan. Should the mortal be trusted or should she be killed? Lysander will have the final say. With Fallon now knowing about Alyssa it puts her in danger of being used against Alyssa and the Clan. Fallon is pulled into a war that she wishes she wasn't a part of. The hunters now have a new soldier; an unstable hybrid of hunters, that when unleased cause destruction wherever they go. These new frenzy soldiers are not only a threat to vampires but to anyone that stands in there way.
The only way for Alyssa and her Clan to survive this brutal enemy is to make a temporary alliance with the greatest threat they've ever known...Santino. Santino is against this new army, he believes in protecting the innocent and with these rogue soldiers now on the Acta Sanctorum's side he must help the vampires he once hunted in order to protect everyone. Will Santino turn against the Acta Sanctorum? Will he truely join forces with Lysander's Clan in order to rid the world of the abominations plaguing their city?
Immortalis: Hunters and Prey is an unexpected thrill ride. The story flows so easily that you don't realize it's over til the last page is in your face. Full of action, passion, comedy and characters you just want to bring into your own world, you won't be disappointed with the second installment in the Immortalis series! It leaves you wanting more. Book 3: Pandora's Box is a book I can't wait for! It can't come fast enough!
This series is a must read! Go out and get your copies today Katie Salidas does NOT disappoint!
Hunters & Prey picks up (we have to assume) shortly after Immortalis Carpe Noctem left off ~ Post-Kallisto & Acta Sanctorum-battle with Alyssa continuing to struggle between her need for blood and having to kill her victims to keep her existence a secret.
Alyssa, while being followed by someone her clan isn't even sure is alive, seeks shelter in a cafe where she runs into her best friend, Fallon. Fallon hasn't seen Alyssa in a while. Once she starts asking questions she shouldn't know the answer to she finds herself sucked into a world she didn't know existed.
I rated this book of the Immortalis series 1/2 a ★ higher than the first. For me, this series takes me back to some of the first vampire novels I read where vamps don't sparkle, they kill. The world Katie creates for us with this series is dark and, you're not being paranoid, there are people after you. I enjoyed the twist of fate for Santino Vitale, the Acta Sanctorum's most fearsome hunter. He continues to be a favorite character of mine. For those reasons, I found this books slightly more enjoyable than the first.
However, there are a few things that didn't work for me. The first is an issue that I battle with when reading many "they don't know we exist" paranormal/UF books. Some characters seem to be awfully accepting once they discover the things they feared in the dark really do exist. While I have no idea how I'd accept something similar and admit it must be hard to write about such an experience, I don't always find the character's reactions or acceptance believable. That aside, Fallon is a likable character and I'll be interested to see how their friendship changes in future books in the series. The second issue I have is while Alyssa is trying to find a way to feed without killing, she continues to feast on those that "are criminals". But, does she have much to back that up before diggin' in? I don't think so. She doesn't want to kill humans, but doesn't mind chompin' down on someone she thinks is about to or has committed a criminal act. I'm hoping to see some growth in Alyssa's character in the next book. Time to put her big girl britches on.
Ok, so book 2 pretty much picks up where the first left.
Alyssa, Lysander and the travelling clan have pretty much recovered from the battle with Santino and the saints and are looking to move on for a little while.
Alyssa has been having vivid dreams of Santino tho, but due to her age Lysander brushes them off as a fear from the trauma she's just had to deal with - which is true. In the last 6 weeks she had to endure the attack from the 2 men that nearly caused her death, her turning, her trouble with coming to deal with living as a vampire, and then the battle.
The first hunt of the book sees Alyssa hunting alone.....and sending a vamp near. She calls them out and is certain it's Santino that replies and steps out into the light. She runs home. But because she can't say for certain if it's him again it's brushed aside.
To be safe Alyssa hunts closer to home the next night. There's no mistaking it this time. But she doesn't want to lead them home, jumps in a cab.....But takes him to possibly one of the worst places she could.....
......to the cafe she frequented as a human.
This book has a lot more action in it than book 1.
When you reach the end it is clear why the tag line is "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"
But not all the clan is of the same mind.
World's are mixed. And it's due to the stubbornness on behalf of one side that endangers Alyssa and more because of it.
How it will work out in the long term....im not sure.
Lysander shows his love for Alyssa a lot more in this one too which I'm pleased about. He wasn't very forthcoming in the first book, and she needed someone to keep her happy and anchored to the vampire life.
The travelling clan however, seem not to be moving for a while! This looks to be a good thing as it appears to be aiding Alyssa in the next book.....which is intriguing to think about as she's very strong minded. I'm unsure how she's going to take orders - even if they ARE meant to make her a better and stronger vampire.
As for Santino....its unclear. But I know we haven't seen the last of him.
Whether it's as a friend or enemy? That's to be seen.
This is gathering momentum nicely and glad to see Lysander and Alyssa's relationship showing a bit more warmth...
This book is a follow up to the Immortalis Carpe Noctem.
Alyssa, with the help of her ancient vampire mate, Lysander, has finally accepted that her mortal life is over. She's now living with him and his other "children", the Peregrinus clan. One evening while hunting, she thought she saw Santino Vitale, the most fearsome hunter of Acta Sanctorum (vampire hunters). She informed Lysander of this but he convinced her that Santino was dead or if he's not dead, it would take a lot of time and blood for him to heal his wounds. Alyssa became restless and she's having "daymares" because of this. She couldn't concentrate as Lysander's mate or even as a vampire. She really believes Santino is out there waiting for her to make a wrong move. And she's right! Santino is indeed alive! She saw him again while hunting and this time, she couldn't go home, it's not safe for her vampire family. So she fled and went to the only other place she knew. The coffee shop where she used to hang out on a daily basis when she's still human.
And that was a BIG mistake! Her human best friend Fallon saw her and she could not hide things from her. She had to tell Fallon about her new life as a vampire. And now she broke one of the vampire laws - revealing herself to a mortal. Now things are more complicated than ever. Santino is hunting her and even if she escaped Santino, Lysander will surely be mad at her for breaking the vampire law.
The second installment is great, though the first book was better than this. This is packed with action, suspense, twist, and a lot of romance! I loved the whole idea of this series. I was hooked after the first book. I think I'm in "lust" with Lysander. I love Lysander for being a rough and tough vampire. I want to have the third book now! Both of Katie Salidas' books kept me up late a couple of nights. I recommend this series for fans of urban fantasy and paranormal romance novels. Try the first book and you'll love it just like me!
I really love the visuals Katie Salidas creates with her writing; her descriptions were wonderful, and I really liked the flow of the book. I liked the first book in this series, but I didn't love it because the main character really annoyed me, and she continued to annoy me in this book, but I see some hope for her in this book! She makes some seriously damaging decisions in this book, that cause lots of problems for her friends. She doesn't think before acting, and although her intentions are good, her actions generally cause problems for herself and her group, so it is difficult to like her, but as I said, she is learning that she needs to think things through, so I liked her a bit more in this book. I loved all the action, and once the main plot started evolving I enjoyed a lot of the story. The romance definitely stepped up a notch in this book, and Lysander and Alyssa have some really sweet moments, and they definitely have a couple of spicy moments. In Hunters and Prey, Alyssa runs into some trouble, and ends up dragging her human friend, Fallon, into the vampire world, which is dangerous because a group of hunters is set on exterminating vampires, and a faction of these hunters has their sights set on Alyssa and her group of vamps. So, Alyssa needs to help rectify the trouble she caused by bringing Fallon into the vamp world, and she also has to deal with being hunted. I like that the book has a bit of gore, and that I can see the characters growing. I still wasn't love with the side characters; they all seemed rather dull, and I could have done without some of the scenes of Alyssa going feeding because it felt a bit repetitive to me. This book kept me interested and entertained till the end, so I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
Katie has done it again in the next chapter in the life of a young vampire named Alyssa!
When I began reading the new book by Katie, Hunters and Prey, I was a little bothered by the similarity between the way Alyssa chose her victims and how Nicholas Cage's character in Ghost Rider punished his victims. Nicholas punished 'bad' people by making them feel the pain of their victims. In Hunters and Prey, Alyssa chose her 'blood source' by taking blood from only those who had harmed others in some way, and the victims felt the pain they had imposed on others. But as I read more into the book, I found it would not have worked any other way and I give her kudos for that. It gave Alyssa a compassionate side as a vampire.
In Hunters and Prey, Alyssa, breaks a rule by making herself known by entering a 'cafe she frequented as a teenager with her best friend Fallon. This sets the stage for the rest of the book. She finds she has to be rescued more than once by her beloved Lesander and the clan. Especially when her daymares about an old nemesis from Immortalis Carpe Noctem, becomes real. I have to say once again, it was a book I could not put down, and am looking forward to the next chapter in Alyssa's adventures as a new vampire. Katie breathes life into her characters and as a reader, I found myself enthralled in the world she created in Hunters and Prey. I hope Katie keeps Alyssa around for a long time. Katie has added a extra treat at the end, a preview of the next book in the series, "Pandora's Box". This book is a must read!
The second installment of the Immortalis saga, picks up after the Peregrinus clan has clashed with enemy vampire Callisto and the corrupt religious sect, the Acta Sanctorum. While hunting, heroine Alyssa encounters their enemy Santino, thought to be dead, and becomes haunted by visions of him. Despite her lover/maker Lysander's assurances, she can't shake the feeling that Santino has somehow survived. Her fears are soon realized, and Alyssa finds herself the protector of her mortal friend, Fallon, in a life or death struggle with the evil mastermind behind the Acta Sanctorum, Quentin. Alyssa then discovers that Quentin has been engaged in some not quite so saintly experiments involving vampire blood that has created an army of bloodthirsty zombies. Santino, distressed by his master's unholy army, joins forces with the Peregrinus clan and together they battle Quentin and his ghouls.
The character of Alyssa grows stronger in this installment. I admired her determination to help her friend, even against the wishes of her clan. It was good to see her stick to her guns and stand up to the formidable presence of Lysander for the first time, proving that despite her love for him she's no pushover. This book is a fast-paced, sexy and entertaining read, with generous helpings of action, blood, and romance. Alyssa gets to kick some serious [...], and she and Lysander dial up the sexual heat a few times. As with the first book in the series, I enjoyed the Vegas setting and how the author uses it in her story.

Favorite Lines “You know, you’re an asshole.” “Someone has to be. This isn’t a fairytale.”
“If more people were willing to donate blood, the Red Cross wouldn’t have to beg for it all the time.”
“I know you think we’re all against you. Trust me, this is not the case. In fights like these, though, survivors may be few, and I need you to be prepared for that. Any one of us could find death.”
“I know you love me, and I love you too. I was ready to cross over when I thought you would be there, waiting for me on the other side.”
Ohhhh I love a good kick ass, get some lovin Vampire story! This is one of the good ones too! Alyssa and Lysander are a fabulous couple! In this book Alyssa knows the evil Santino is not dead. She's having daymares about him. No one will believe her! While out hunting one night THERE HE IS! While trying to get away from him she makes the decision to go to her old job where her best friend Fallon works. Then all hell breaks loose and surprisingly Santino isn't the biggest threat this time!
I really enjoy this authors writing, she slips you into her world so easily. The characters are love able and hate able! The story lines are fabulous and YUMMY! This is a great series for any paranormal lover! I'm excited to see what comes new for Alyssa!
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review (RBTL)
I’ve been anxiously awaiting the return of this series. I was extremely impressed with Mrs. Salidas’ first novel, Immortalis: Carpe Noctem, (an introduction to the vampires of Las Vegas) and her ability to make each character come alive. This book takes us even further into the lives of those now familiar characters, giving them new depth. Santino Vitale, a personal favorite of mine, returns and though he is still, an intimidating vampire hunter inspiring visions of serial-killer Michael Myers, he’s been given a new layer. Not simply a mindless hunter of all things ‘Unnatural’, he’s a man with a mission. Alyssa too, the naïve, newly turned vampire, takes on a more serious role as she is forced to deal with the repercussions of bringing her human friend into the fray between the Acta Sanctorum and the vampires.
Just like the first, I had a lot of fun reading Immortalis: Hunters & Prey. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next in this exciting series and would recommend this to anybody interested in the Urban Fantasy/Dark Fantasy genres.
How the mighty has fallen! I liked the twist to the story in this follow up in the Immortalis series. This kept me entertained all the way through the book. I think this should be a very interesting story for future books in this series and I'm interested to see what becomes of the Acta Sanctorum.
I didn't think I would, but I liked the fact that Alyssa feeds only on bad guys. I'm not usually fond of vampires killing their meals, but I found this worked for me. I found Alyssa's will to not harm the innocent to be a great characteristic and shows her to be strong willed, not only to her mate, but to herself as well.
I would have liked to have seen Alyssa grow a bit more as a vampire (ie, training) but the author seems to have this in the bag for later and I'm excited to see the vampire that Alyssa could be.
I don't think i could love this book anymore!!!! It was such an amazing read!!! Would give it more than 5* if i could, i love love love this series!!! The way that this was written just compels you to read more making this book such a page turner, it's one of those books that once you pick it up you don't want to put it down but then are gutted when it finishes because thats how good it is.
When i read the first book in this series i had no idea where the story would go and i definitely didn't think what happens in this book would happen. It is a surprising book in a very good way, i was enthralled from the first sentence! This is a book that you would need to read the first book beforehand as there is so much in this book that you would not fully understand if you had not. There are many surprises and twists and turns in this book that is filled with action around every corner and the way that katie Salidas writes this book doesn't just pull you in it drags you into the world that she has created and believe me you will love every moment. It is such a imaginative and descriptive book that your imagination just soaks it up making it come alive in your mind as you are reading it and for me, this makes a brilliantly talented writer.
One of the things that surprised me and also one of the reasons i loved this book was the introduction of Fallon, she is a brilliant character and i was so glad to find out more about hr and also see the connection she has with Alyssa, reading about it firsthand and not just from Alyssa’s memories. Fallon is such a great character to read about and i think i lot of that is because of her inner strength and confidence, you see her ripped from her safe insulated world and the way that she reacts to that is brilliant. She is such a strong female character and i really do hope we see more of her in the future.
You see Lysander in a slightly different light, the fact that not only is he the caring man with a big heart but you also see why he is the leader of the clan, the fact that he will put their needs above his own. I love reading about him, there is just something completely compelling about him that makes you want to know more about him and his past. You also see how much Alyssa means to him and i do love the interaction between the love of them and how much they feel for each other.
I really don't want to say aanymore and give away what happens in this book, i voluntarily reviewed this book and i am so glad that i did, this is a book and a series that everyone should read, it's amazing!!!
Forgot that I read the first book in this series and didn't like it. Got this one for free and after a bit realized that his was the sequel. Ok, I guess I'll give it a shot and see if anything improves. No. Nothing improves. The characters still have no depth or development, and the reader is still given nothing to explain why the ancient vampire Lysander even likes Alyssa, the female lead character. There's an excessive amount of graphic sex that doesn't move the plot forward even a millimeter. Alyssa is annoying. She doesn't stand up for herself and whines a lot. Lysander and Alyssa have the exact. same. argument. over and over and over again. It's not that the argument is unresolved and so they keep debating it; instead they literally say the same words to each other as if the author cut and pasted the argument from scene to scene. Perhaps I should have counted how many times Alyssa says "she's my friend" in the hopes that those 3 words will finally persuade Lysander to change his mind. Ridiculous. The very least the author could have done, if intent on keeping Alyssa on this whiny path, is to have another character acknowledge that she is just repeating herself in a most unhelpful manner. Nope.
The same can be said for the vampire lore. The description of how vampires feed and then hide the evidence of their kills is repeated nearly verbatim several times. I'm not against clarity, but there's a way to present the same information in a way that references the initial thorough explanation so the reader is reminded. The explanation does not need to be stated and re-stated at every turn.
The plot line was predictable, and the pace was tedious. I will not forget that I've read this book. So I won't accidentally pick up book 3.
Another great read by Katie , this takes place shortly after the battle with Santino , and we learn more about each of the characters, and further into how our main character is settling into her new life as a vampire , along with just who she targets when she needs to feed. We learn that she feeds off those who caused her to have to turn , the scumbags and low-downs who prey on others ( aka the criminals ). The Aura Sanctorum captures our main character , and her best friend , in order to try and create an army of mindless killing machines , and they must learn to trust Santino as they deal with this problem together. Thrilling , with just the right amount of steaminess ( hint hint nudge nudge wink wink ). I can't wait to find out more! Katie will never cease to be a page-turning , captivating author for me ! Signing off till book 3 , Promisary.

Vampire stories have become so prevalent in today’s fiction that even readers outside the genre are aware of the trend. This preponderance of preternatural fantasy can make it more and more difficult to find a truly original spin on the vampire myth. Sparkles, soul mates, daywalkers, and boarding school... even though there are great examples of each of these tropes, sometimes it’s hard to find the good hidden amongst the derivative. HUNTER AND PREY stands out from the crowd by being retro, embracing parts of the old school vampire myth that are largely neglected in Urban Fantasy today.
While I applaud Salidas’s willingness to explore the less popular, more gruesome end of the vampire continuum, her execution left me wanting more. A good premise only gets me through the first few chapters, and unfortunately, the characters in HUNTER AND PREY never really stepped in to pick up the slack. The heroine, Alyssa, justifies killing a human every night with the explanation that she eats “murderers." This nod toward the Dexter defense didn't hold water for me, as Alyssa has only the most circumstantial evidence before she chows down. Every night she ventures out into the Las Vegas darkness, and if she sees you attacking someone, discussing attacking someone, or just generally hanging out in the wrong part of town looking like a threatening man, she’s going to eat you. The book opens with a particularly gruesome “feeding”, showing right off the bat that Alyssa is not a fainting flower.
To be honest, other than some qualms about Alyssa’s profiling methods, I wouldn’t have as much of an issue with Alyssa’s diet if she herself didn’t have bizarre mood swings associated with it. Despite inappropriate giggles and torturing criminals, Alyssa is angry that she is not able to feed without killing (both due to blood lust and the need to kill her victims to keep vampires a secret). Despite being a new vampire surrounded by ancients, she doesn't back down. Salidas is obviously setting Alyssa up to be a force for change in the vampire community, and I imagine future books will continue to explore potential changes to their lifestyle (yes, I just called killing and eating people every night a “lifestyle.” That’s pretty much how Alyssa treats it. It’s like she wants to become a vegetarian and her parents won’t “let” her).
The vampire responsible for thwarting Alyssa’s quest for a more vegan-vampirism is her lover, Lysander, an odd mix of absentee landlord and controlling boyfriend. Only a few pages into the book he’s dismissing Alyssa’s concerns about Santino, using vampire mind-tricks to control her emotions, and trying to convince her that a “quickie” will cure all her ills. Lysander’s antiquated cure for female hysteria not withstanding, his patience with Alyssa’s mood swings and rash decisions is charming. Over two thousand years old, Lysander is learning to open up as much as Alyssa is learning to grow up, and there is enough chemistry between the two of them that I have hope that they’ll someday meet in the middle.
Light on character development and long on old school vampirism, HUNTER AND PREY is good for those who are more interested in world building than the characters in it. If you miss the olden days of skulking vampires and hedonistic human-draining, this series is worth a peak.
Sexual Content: Explicit sex scenes, mentions of rape.
I am going to review this as a series instead of three separate books. Sometimes a vampire book can seem the same after reading so many, and lately I have had the pleasure of reading some wonderful vampire stories that have put an original twist to them. As with this series I am happy to say this series has that something different that I am always looking for in a great book.
Alyssa did not want to turn vampire, but, Lysander, a loner vamp turns Alyssa into a vampire in order to say her life, she was being attacked by a couple of guys who were trying to rape and kill her. Lysander turned Alyssa instead of letting her die. The first book in the series is mainly focused on Alyssa and her coming to terms with this life altering change to from human to vampire, she has an extremely hard time dealing with this and also with the fact they must drink straight from humans in order to stay alive, no animals or bag blood. Now she's whiny about the whole situation, but, you would be too if you were turned into a vampire against your will, and if you want an action packed book, this is the one to read. So book #1 off to a great start and on to book #2.
At the start of book 2 Alyssa is still having somewhat of a hard time with her change, but I think what impressed me most of all with this author, who by the way is a new author for me, is her writing style, at the start of book 2 Katie Salidas is able to recap book 1 so that you understand book 2 without confusing you totally, and with saying that if you hadn't started with the first book you can easily start reading the second book and understand it with no problems which I might add is a hard thing to do, bravo Ms. Salidas, I really like that in an author that impresses me a lot.
After having recurring nightmares about Santino, a evil vampire hunter. Lysander is adamant that he is not alive and hunting them, Alyssa knows he is, so when she comes face to face with him, Alyssa runs back to the only place that made her feel safe.....her old hang out when she was a mortal and runs into her best friend she had to leave behind when she was turned.....Fallon. So I really don't want to give away everything, we all know I hate spoilers but I will tell you a few things to keep you in suspense lol, Fallon gets kidnapped to try and have Alyssa fall right into Santino's trap he's set for her, and soon enough Alyssa figures out that worse things lay ahead, worse than Santino. I love this line from the book, "The enemy of your enemy is your friend.....Right?" Santino What a perfect line. Again another action packed book of this series, starts out great, love all the characters and I loved that Lysander and Alyssa's relationship has vamp up (no pun intended) lol you can just feel his love for her, and I love the addition of Fallon and Nicholas characters, no spoilers you gotta read it to . So book 2 awesome and now on the book #3.
The third book in this series was nothing short of amazing, such originality, more than the first and second , she has introduced more new characters, werewolves....Aiden to be specific *sigh* that's one hot werewolf. All three books are packed with action, wonderful characters, a fantastic plot and story line, and takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride which leaves you wanting more. If you haven't read any of these books yet I suggest you go right now and grab your copies of this awesome series. You will not be disappointed you did, and hang on to your seat for a great ride. I hope you all enjoy this series as much as I did!!! Enjoy!!!!!!
In the vampire realm, humans are considered food, so what happens when the former best friend of a vampire, is the one that saves her from death? In this second installment, IMMORTALS: HUNTERS AND PREY, Katie Salidas turns the table on the very belief system of her vampire clan. Has she just signed a death warrant for her best friend? The real problem is, can she save her friend from her own blood lust? This is a well-written and gritty vampire tale peppered with not just your average vampire blood lust, but just plain lust. In HUNTERS AND PREY, Alyssa conflicts with an old adversary, the most fearsome hunter of the Acta Sanctornum, Santino Vitale. Up until this very sighting, the vampire clan had thought him dead. The one thing that Santino holds most dear is the human life. Alyssa knows that he will not put humans at risk to kill a vampire. This leads her to one of her old human "watering holes" to seek protection. Forgetting that this would also put her into contact with human friends, those no longer a part of her new life as a vampire, she runs into her very best friend from before the change, Fallon. This is a complexity that can bring down the clan, and while there was a reason for her subterfuge, Lysander, her love and the vampire leader, will be angry.
His decision is to turn Fallon as well, in order to keep their secret. Since she is not reasonable about this, Alyssa becomes her champion, standing behind her and getting a commitment that her own clan would not kill her. When the new leader of Acta Sanctornum uses Fallon as a pawn to trap Alyssa, she finds that Quentin is even more evil than Santino. He has a twisted plan to build an army of mutant vampires. Santino is appalled because it puts humans at risk. He is willing to join sides with Lysander's clan to take Quentin to justice, but then all bets are off.
This is a dark and madcap story, full of unusual twists and turns. Because Alyssa is such a young vampire (newly turned), her blood lust is almost uncontrollable. She must feed more frequently to assuage her thirst, but to keep her strength as well. She is the mate of Lysander, the leader of the clan. Their relationship is fraught with emotion; Alyssa has control issues, but belongs to the controller. The one thing they have in common is a physical, lustful relationship. Just the richness of Lysander's voice can set Alyssa aflame. Imagine a simple touch. Everything becomes invisible when their lust ignites, their playful biting and actual feeding fan the flames, creating an inferno.
This is a story of vampires operating in and around our world, careful to maintain their privacy. Using only the most heinous criminals as feed, they are able to keep under the radar. Alyssa has changed that in one unthinking moment. Will they be able to continue as they have for thousands of years? In addition, can they collaborate with the enemy to stop a lunatic? The pace will keep you turning the page, until long after dark. Plan your reading time well.

Alyssa felt, deep down inside, that her biggest enemy, Santino, didn't perish in the showdown in Las Vegas. He haunts her dreams causing horrible daymares. When she's out feeding and he appears in the shadows, her daymares become a reality. Her flee to safety lands her in Copioh, the cafe she frequented as a human, and right back into Fallon's life; months after Alyssa's disappearance.
After divulging her whereabouts to her oh-so-very-human friend, Alyssa realizes not only the rookie mistake she made in informing a human the vampire secret, but also the danger she has just dumped into Fallon's lap. She now not only has to find a way fact to Lysander and the safe house, she has to get Fallon there too. After finally retreating to a hotel in a nearby casino, Alyssa and Fallon are joined by Alyssa's clan, where Alyssa is reprimanded and Fallon is given the choice to be turned. As the night wears on, the clan is on edge and Fallon flees as soon as she can. When Alyssa gets a call that Fallon is in the clutches of the Acta Sanctorum. Not wanting to upset her clan even more, Alyssa leaves the confines of the casino in search of her best friend, alone and unprepared for what awaits her.
"Hunters and Prey" is a wonderfully written sequel in Katie Salidas' Immortalis series. Alyssa is still trying to grow accustom to her new self and her character development is slow and thorough, as opposed to quick, rushed, and flawed. She's hot headed, impulsive, and reacts first and thinks about consequences later. In this installment, Alyssa may just realize how dangerous those qualities are, whether you're immortal or not. Alyssa's personality is likable and even in her weak vampire stature she is still a strong heroine. Lysander shows his softer side even though Alyssa has put not only him but the entire clan, herself, and a human in extreme danger. Although, in Alyssa's defense, Lysander didn't believe her when she said Santino was alive and stalking her so she did what she had to do at the time.
Alyssa's determination to keep her friend safe is very admirable especially since her entire clan finds Fallon to be dispensable if it means that the clan is kept safe. Her rash actions may cause trouble - like fleeing to the cafe that she knows her best friend hangs out in and then deciding it would be okay to divulge the who's, what's, and where's of her life since her disappearance - but she stood up and took the heat, and did everything in her power to protect Fallon.
I love how the supposed good guy has to join up with the very creatures he's been trained to kill in order to continue to protect human kind from a mad scientist, Quentin, and his dangerous new creations. The plot has excellent continuity, is action packed, and doesn't contain any dull or awkward moments. Dialogue between all of the characters is well written and their interactions, good or bad, play out very well.
I can't wait to start Book #3 "Pandora's Box." Stay tuned for that review to come shortly.
Welcome to round 2 of the Immortalis Series. Last week we took a look at Book 1 and with that said, I'd like to give you guys a disclaimer. I don't normally include spoilers but this is a series, so please I'm begging you read the books that come before. I don't want to spoil anything but I will be referencing back. Now that my little PSA is said and done let's get down to business! Hunters & Prey continues to follow the story of Alyssa and Lysander, their clan and the only friend Alyssa had while she was human. An old enemy returns, bringing a new foe with him. Can the clan manage to outwit the Saints ad keep Alyssa out of trouble?
Katie follows up Carpe Noctem with a whole new set of challenges for out favorite couple. One of my favorite things about this book is that Katie jumps right into the story. She gives a refresher without the overkill of review that some writers struggle with. This is how you build a series! In my review of the first book I mentioned Fallon briefly, she is the obligatory annoying best friend. I will tell you that by the end of the book I don't hate her nearly as much as I did. But to me she is still just a tad self-centered and pushy. Fallon becomes a driving force in the plot once Alyssa is forced to out run Santino and ends up back at the coffee shop. Once Fallon spots Alyssa she's like a dog with a bone about what is going on. Alyssa should grow a back bone where Fallon is concerned, but now the damage is done. The relationship between Fallon and Alyssa also puts strain on the deepening relationship between Alyssa and the clan, including Lysander. Nicholas is still holding a grudge but it's nice to see everyone else trying to manage Alyssa's expectations with some grace. The realism of these interactions really help to keep the story grounded. The trials Alyssa and Lysander go through are a perfect example of keeping the characters real. I loved when Lysander proved his points while still pointing out that the situation Alyssa is fighting so hard against was of her own making.
Alyssa never wanted to be turned but I feel is starting to accept that it was the only way. The reappearance of Fallon just shoves in her face what she thought she made peace with. It's interesting to watch Alyssa struggle with the human motives that are so recent. The action scenes keep you guessing and Katie by no means guarantees anyone's safety. It's nice to see more interaction with the big bad Santino, even if it isn't always civil. This is defiantly a step up from the first book and to me that's a great sign. Book 1 was your introduction into this world. Now that you have the background Katie takes you right into the heart of what todays problem is without the problems being over used and predictable.
It was refreshing to see all the characters grow with this book. New situations cause new problems and Katie's characters handle then beautifully. Bottom line, must read if you have started the series, if you are looking for a paranormal to pick up this is one worth your time.
After the fierce battle with Kallisto and the Acta Sanctorum, newborn vampire Alyssa is trying to adjust to her life with Lysander and the P clan. She is haunted by dreams of Santino, the Saints most feared vampire hunter and is certain he is again on the hunt. Her fears play into her ambivelence about her need to feed and kill to survive and her struggle of acceptance. When confronted by Santino while feeding, Alyssa seeks refuge at Cafe Copioh, where she runs into her best friend, Fallon. It's impossible for Alyssa to come up with an appropriate explanation for her absence and when Santino tracks her down, Fallon is dragged into Alyssa's new reality. As in Immortalis Carpe Noctem, the strength of this series lies in Salidas's examination of Alyssa's attempt to reconcile her new lifestyle with her with human morals. This is emphasised in this installment by involving Fallon in the plot. While I am dubious about some aspects of this idea, I think it was mostly handled well. The scene that has Alyssa and Fallon trapped by Quentin was particuarly effective. The Acta Sanctorum remains an interesting foe, Salidas has stepped it up by introducing a new nemesis and the raging zombie hybrids are truly scary. To be honest I found it difficult to embrace Santino's shifting perspective but it will be interesting to see where Salidas takes it. Salidas has a real talent for creating a visual scene of her imagined world. She intergrates her imagination with the real world effectively. The pace is taut and the dark edge adds a frission of excitement and horror to the story. What disconcerts me the most in this installment, is the timing. It's not clear if its been days, weeks or months since Alyssa was turned and it has an effect on my reaction to both her character and some of the events. For a newly turned vampire, surrounded by vampires who have decades and even centuries of life on her, Alyssa's petulant demands to be treated as an equal by Lysander and the clan are annoying. While much is said of Alyssa being a magnet for trouble, every situation she finds herself in is because of her own choices. I would have liked to have seen some more maturity in Alyssa's character between the last book and this, however if the timeline was clearer I would perhaps not be as critical of her behaviour. In terms of plot, Fallon's reaction to running into Alyssa at the Cafe in particular doesn't track for me. Fallon's reaction was too low key even if Alyssa had been missing only a matter of days. Its a minor issue but one that affected my enjoyment of the story. Hunters & Prey is a decent sequel to Immortalis Carpe Noctem. Even though there were some aspects of this book that didn't quite work for me, on balance it has unique and engaging elements that continues to keep me interested in the series.
Wow!...Intense! The strength of Alyssa’s control and the depth of her rage will reel you in!
Katie Salidas has done it again! In Hunters & Prey, book 2 of her Immortalis Series, Salidas has continued Alyssa’s adventures with an “insiders” look on the trials and tribulations of a newly turned vampire.
As we learned in book one of the series, Immortalis: Carpe Noctem, getting used to the ins and outs of being a newly turned vampire is most definitely not all “candy & glamour”. As with any drastic life change, one must accept there are certain things that must be left behind. For Alyssa, leaving behind her best friend was one “rule” she absolutely would not abide by.
When vampire’s most vicious enemy decides to pay a visit, Alyssa does the only thing she can think of in a pinch…run to a populated area and hide in plain site until help arrives. Can she help it if she finds herself outside of an old hangout from her human days? Well maybe, but it’s too late to change her mind once she opens the door and comes face to face with her dearest friend, Fallon. Imagine the surprise when Fallon sees the face of her best friend for the first time since Alyssa disappeared months before! Needless to say, Fallon is unwillingly dragged into the mess that is now Alyssa’s life and Alyssa is stubbornly determined to do whatever it takes to make sure Fallon comes out of this chaos in one piece!
Now, there have been some who’ve mentioned that while Immortalis: Hunters & Prey is a nice change in that it explores the darker side of what it is to be a new vampire; some also mention that there just wasn’t enough to catch a “gold star”…Well, I disagree. Salidas’ provides a unique look at the darker side of the vampire with a conscience. Yes, Alyssa’s kills to feed. Yes, she feeds from humans, and yes she chooses to justify her actions by hunting only those dredges of society of whom the world is better off without. Does this make Alyssa a self-imposed judge and jury? …Maybe, I guess it depends on your perception of right and wrong. But at the end of the day, the truth is that vampires feed on human blood to survive and, as with any species, it all boils down to survival of the fittest. And, let’s face it! Vampires are undoubtedly bigger, badder, and stronger than any human!
As with Carpe Noctem (see my review here), Salidas has knocked my socks of with Hunters & Prey. With talent apparent, Katie Salidas will take readers on a dark and violent adventure that just might keep you up all night, turning the pages…or quivering in your PJ’s…or turning the pages AND quivering in your PJ’s!
My Review: Alyssa and Lysander are back in the newest addition to the urban fantasy series, IMMORTALIS by Katie Salidas. Though the two vampires (and their adopted coven, the Peregrinus clan) encounter their share of danger and bad guys, HUNTERS AND PREY is not a high-octane, fast-paced novel. The story does unfold well, and never moves too slowly. However, each chapter is not filled with some new horror the hero/heroine must face. Rather, this is a book that follows a group of vampires that live lives almost the same as humans. They just happen to spend most of their time awake during the nighttime hours, and they hunt the depraved in order to gain sustenance.
In the first book, CARPE NOCTEM, these vampires found themselves being hunted by a ruthless adversary, Santino. This time around, Santino needs their help to face down a far greater threat to both humanity and vampirekind. (How very X-Men). Usually I am very on-the-fence about the villain who is KO'ed miraculously surviving a critical blow, but Salidas leads up to Santino's return very skillfully, and it is clear throughout the novel that, though the two sides might combine forces for a short period of time, the animosity toward each other is far from resolved.
The idea of the villain returning to propose a truce to his former prey is a part of the story that I liked. (How very Terminator 2). Readers who can get lost during the course of a series because of the inclusion of more and more characters that the hero/heroine encounter, will appreciate the return of Santino, a very familiar character, with very familiar motivations.
In the end, HUNTERS AND PREY is a welcome addition to the IMMORTALIS series for me. While I very much liked reading CARPE NOCTEM, I was more enganged when reading HUNTERS AND PREY. It's a book that held my attention with good characters, a good plot, and nice world-building. Best of all, it's made me want to dig into the next book in the series, as soon as possible.

Months since Carpe Noctem's end with the battle with Santino the head hunter for the Acta Sanctorum and miraculously Alyssa and Lysander walked away with their heads on their shoulders. Alyssa in sow plagued with day mares of Santino coming for her along with the haunting memory of how close she was to death at Santino's blade. Alyssa has the feeling these day mares mean something... that Santino is alive and stronger than the clan believes, but not one truly believes her. Alyssa gets spotted by her enemy while feeding and runs. Not wanting to danger her clan, old habits kick in and Alyssa goes to a human packed place for safety, Cafe Copioh ~ her old hang-out. She is spotted by her best friend before she could leave, a rule broken by Alyssa that could cost her her live or others too when the new threat is unveiled.
I enjoyed this book more than the first book. Both the books have been quick easy reads for me and the pages turn so easily and quickly. We had Alyssa still being the strong headed girl she is. And not she didn't strike me as whiny as she did in the beginning of the first book. She has come a long way as a character for me. And I enjoy her with her mistakes and all now because she does have good intentions behind what she does, she just makes a few errors in quick judgement. Who doesn't? She has grown to be a stronger character mentally, and working on physically too.
We meet the Peregrinus clan in the first book, and I really liked them. And they are here in this book as well. They are a nice group of people to give more support, one way or the other. And we have Lysander again. Mmm, he is such a nice man for Alyssa. ;)
This book does have the romance aspect to it as well. Alyssa and Lysander is a couple working through their different ways, together ~ or trying even though he is the clan leader. And we have more action as Alyssa finds herself in trouble and their are fights happening.
The story takes a change to it with Santino and the new Frenzy Soldiers that they learn about. Interesting how things work that people just might need to work together...
I did enjoy this book, and would like to read the next in the series as well.
Whilst definitely better than the first book, Alyssa's actions are the main reason for my low rating.
Alyssa is incredibly selfish and stubborn, believing she is right and the 2000 year old vampires are always wrong. She doesn't listen, she doesn't care about her own safety until her life's flashing before her eyes. She involves others, namely her best friend Fallon from her former, human life despite knowing there would be serious consequences from being warned enough times to never reveal who she is to any human or show herself to anyone from her human life.
Alyssa deserved a severe punishment for her reckless disregard for the rules but when it came down to meting it out Lysander backed down. I couldn't believe it! Alyssa's begging and whining reminded me of a two-year-old child who didn't know when to let it go all ready. Despite her behaviour, in the end she was rewarded for the trouble she'd caused and the danger she'd put everyone in. Fallon should've run from Alyssa and the others after everything they'd put her through. I couldn't understand why she'd stayed. There doesn't seem to be much between Fallon and Alyssa other than that they say they're friends -we don't know why or how they're so close.
I believe it's the same with Lysander and Alyssa. I kept waiting for him to wake up and behead Alyssa. Sex must've addled his brain. She's not worth the pain and suffering she causes. At least she's going to be trained to act like a soldier now, and Nicholas is not the soft touch Lysander is. I hope he beats the selfish, cocky attitude out of her and drums some common sense into her obviously empty head.
Again, Santino, the villain of the piece, was the character I liked the most. If only he'd killed Alyssa at the beginning when he had the chance. Unable to think rationally before she acted annoyed the hell out of me and completely ruined my ability to gain any enjoyment from this book.
*Although this was a free e-book from the author this did not impact on my rating or review.
I’m not sure why I’m continuing on with this series, except perhaps I’m just stubborn like that. I dislike the characters, their reactions make no sense to me and I find them completely unrelatable. If I had to describe Alyssa, I would say she’s whiny, annoying, naïve, idiotic and spineless. She rushes into situations without care or thought, so maybe I should add dumb to the list. She also is a complete know it all without actually knowing anything. Case in point she thinks she knows better than Lysander, who incidentally is 1975 years older than her, give or take. Maybe the author is trying to portray her as spunky and brave but the stilted language and Alyssa’s actions make that a losing battle. She is the furtherest thing from selfless yet she rushes to Fallon’s aid. Fallon, the friend who ditched her on the night Alyssa was nearly raped, beaten and turned into a vampire, yet whom Alyssa is completely and totally supportive of and holds absolutely no grudge or ill feeling towards whatsoever?! And while Alyssa is meant to be 25, she acts more like a 13 year old on her first period. I am at a loss to see what Lysander sees in her apart from the fact that he must be into big chesteses. Furthermore in the book, Lysander is always telling Alyssa what a trouble finder she is, if it’s meant to be cute… it’s not. Evolution has been too kind to the level of stupidity she displays. And Lysander doesn’t seem like much of a catch to me. I mean who asks for the geeky hermit vampire who is also a sadist and cold and controlling with Alyssa most of all. The stilted dialogue doesn’t convey their chemistry to me at all and in fact I feel Lysander who is more mature than Alyssa is more like a father figure, so that adds a whole new level of creep to me. Maybe it’s because I just finished reading Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series, (which inexplicably has titles with archangel in all 8 books, why? It confuses me!!) with its superior word building, great flow and well fleshed out characters that makes me dislike this series so much. Im currently on the 3 book now and I forsee more ranting coming. Sorry Mrs. Salidas.
I picked up the Kindle version of this book because I often write pretty heavy stories, and when I do make the time to read, I need something light and fun to lift my spirits. I wasn’t disappointed. I think Ms. Salidas aims for dark, sensuous and brooding, but the storyline is too playful for that (although it is quite sexy in places), and her main character is too naive and airy. That’s part of its appeal, however, and why it makes for a quick, easy read.
I’ll try to avoid any real spoilers, but I have a few things I liked and disliked. As with her first book, I enjoyed the author’s writing style. She had good flow, appropriate dialogue, and no awkward sentences. I’m a sucker for interesting characterization too, and Santino was probably my favourite in this book. I like the fact that the author addressed my point about little reflection on Alyssa’s killing the innocent in the first book, but the explanation why Lysander has romantic rather than fatherly feelings towards Alyssa still is not there. To make matters worse, there are a few moments Alyssa does things that are so dumb, I was ready to throw my Kindle across the room. She at one point needs to escape to a location where there are a lot of humans, and all she can think of is the cafe she frequented before she turned. The only place she could think of with crowds of people...in Las Vegas...you can’t be serious. Lastly, the constant reiteration of the rule about vampires not exposing their existence to humans was repetitive and annoying. I got it the first time, certainly the second, and definitely the third – I didn’t need to read it several more times.
In spite of these minor irritations, it was a good book and considering how tired I am of the paranormal romance vampire/werewolf thing that has been done mostly to death, I’m still willing to rate this as a worthwhile read. I vote that you put your blinders up to any questionable items in the plot and enjoy a fun story.
Alyssa has slowly learned to come to terms with the fact that she is now an immortal. Lysander has taught her that she can't reveal herself to others. That she mustn't let on to her friends and family that she still lives - to some extent, anyway. Yet part of her cannot deny that she yearns to co-exist within the human world.
As Lysander continues to instruct her on the do's and dont's of the vampiric world, she comes to accept the changes that have been wrought upon her and is determined to blend in with the new world around her. Yet that's easier said than done as danger seems to follow wherever she goes. As she comes face to face with one of the Acta Sanctorum, she realizes that Santino is quite the formidable character whose determined to put an end to every undead he comes across.
A battle soon breaks out and catapults her to the one place she shouldn't be. Guilt consumes her, for she knows she's inadvertently placed her best friend in jeopardy by revealing who and what she now is. While a human is not supposed to know about the supernatural world, Alyssa can't deny that Fallon is her only source of safety. The Acta Sanctorum won't attack while she's in their midst. Yet even that is not guaranteed.
With her world now in limbo and her friend's life at stake, Alyssa knows that she and the rest of Lysander's coven need to stay one step ahead of the enemy. One wrong move and it will surely cost them their very lives. Despite this, Alyssa is determined to keep what rightfully belongs to her while to trying to stay out of harms way.
Totally enjoyed the next installment to the Immortalis series. Katie's writing is amazing and kept me riveted to every turn of the page. I truly recommend this series!
Hunters & Prey (Immortalis 2) in this book Alyssa is more comfortable with being a vampire. I actually like that drama of this story. Everything was black and white but it wasn’t. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. This was the underlining truth of this novel.
Katie Salidas found her voice and the story seemed to flow better than in the last one. We the introduction of a character that only had a brief appearance in the first novel, it allows Alyssa to take stock of her life as a vampire. It added a new challenge that I was glad she had to face. Something that I think is glossed over. It will be interesting to see how this impacts the narrative of later books.
The Acta Sanctorum, this sect of vampire condoned by the Roman Catholic Church always rubbed me the wrong way from there the very moment Lysander made mention of them. Any group that doesn’t what they do has essentially lost their way. It was glad to see how power corrupts when they aren’t any checks and balance.
Although I liked it there’s still something that keeps it from push itself into that next level for me to give it a four. I never truly felt that the characters were in real danger. Maybe it’s because they are vampire. Maybe it’s because I’m jaded. Hopefully the next one in the series, Pandora’s Box (Immortalis 3), will meet that missing something.

Hunters and Prey is book two in the series. ‘Rule number one: humans and vampires don't co-exist. One is the hunter and one is the prey. Simple, right? Not for newly-turned vampire Alyssa.’
Alyssa finds she’s done more than just broken vampire law reconnecting with her human best friend, Fallon. In a surprise confrontation with Santino Vitale, the Acta Sanctorum's most fearsome hunter, Alyssa and Fallon become unwitting pawns of a new enemy. The Peregrinus Clan tentatively join forces with Santino in a precarious truce to battle the Acta Sanctorum's new army of hybrid creations ‘the Frenzy Soldiers’.
Trouble seems to find Alyssa every direction she turns and her priorities are confused, muddled and chaotic. I am not sure whether it is immaturity, stubbornness or her humanness that is the problem. I suspect it is a bit of all these things. She is flawed and I find that both endearing and frustrating at the same time. Lysander is one very patient vampire, I am glad he feels like he has found his mate with Alyssa. He certainly has his hands full and I have enjoyed watching their relationship develop.
The plot has good pacing and I found the story line unique. There is a lot of action with some unexpected turns and several bloody battle scenes. Although, we didn't meet any werewolves in this book, Alyssa and Fallon now know of their existence. I am intrigued enough to continue this series.
