I borrowed this from the library to help me along with my WIP. It has tips for every genre and even getting published. It was a really good, informative read and I'm glad I picked it up.
For those new to creative writing this gives a good, basic overview of multiple topics. I liked that the author used a lot of examples to illustrate her advice. There were articles to get aspiring writers trying different things, and I found the example plot outlines particularly interesting. The book doesn't cover any topic in detail but as an introduction to creative writing it was insightful and a quick read.
I bought this book in 2010 and have only just finished it. The book is full of little hints and tips of how to write in the popular genres in the writing world and how to approach publishers. The advice might be a little out of date but certainly worth having some knowledge in that department! It is a quick and easy read and is a book I would recommend, especially if you are just starting out in the writing world.
This book is far from being an "excellent guide" as written in the description. This is a book coming from an uncreative writer who is very apt at making lists and organizing items. Nothing original. One of many other uninspired writers who once thought to be like their childhood hero and failed miserably. What is worse, the need to hustle money from this field only amplifies the problem.
A very fast read. With a spacious font and large gaps at the top and bottom of the page, you can easily fly through this book in one sitting. However, it doesn't really offer anything new on creative writing, and it's so generic that I'd recommend picking up something else instead.
Although this is the seventh edition, it needs some more updates. Yes, everything has to be typed - but not printed out and posted! Some of the core advice is okay, e.g. on dialogue, but genre expectations are also out of date.
I found the author to be open and generous but a large number of useful hints. I did skim past some of the chapters I didn’t find relevant but a worthwhile read during which I took plenty of notes
When I first started reading it, I thought it was the same book as the previous one, but even though some of the material is the same, it isn't. It's kind of close though.
Consequently, I whipped through this book very rapidly and easily.
The previous book only got 3 stars from me because it was outdated and full of stuff about word processors, type-writers (remember those?) and floppy disks. This one has been brought into the 21st century so well done for that.
It's actually quite a nice little introduction to Creative Writing - it covers all the bases, but does not go into any depth on any topic. As such, the light touch should find favour with beginners to the subject.
I love the way that I was able to read and understand this book so quickly. This means to me that I know what's what now.
I thought that she gave hands on advice surrounding every aspect of writing, but I found the chapter on publishing lacking in detail and refinement. Overall, it was a good read; and I found myself inspired to write every time is picked it up
1. This book is (well, obviously) helpful to aspiring writers. 2. The writing exercises are simple but brief. 3. Overall it's reader-friendly and good enough for a re-read.
I didn't read the last 3 chapters as I wasn't particularly interested at the current time when I read this. But the rest that I did read was very useful and inspiring.
