When I re-read books #1 and #2 I could recall certain events but this one I didn't recall having read before. I couldn't believe I'd already written a review for it 😂😂😂.

4.5 stars

Wow, this is one action-packed and steamy read. I read the previous books a while ago and, at first, felt a little out of the loop. However, the fantastic writing duo that is Moira Rogers soon had me right back into this world of shifters, psychics and those with magical powers.

I loved Alec, he's alpha through and through but not in an arrogant way. It was clear from the previous two books that he cares, he cares almost too much. Carmen was very contained and down-to-earth, wanting to avoid the seedy politics that are involved in the wolf shifter world. The chemistry between Alec and Carmen is intense, to say the least - but can it be trusted? Things are complicated further by heartbreaking pasts and interfering families. This leads to plenty of angst and lots of nail-biting action.

I was hooked from start to finish and massively enjoyed this story. I'm now off to read the next book in the series as I need more of this world.

Favorite Quote: “I’m all wolf honey. One-hundred percent alpha bastard.”

There is just something about this Southern Arcana world by Moira Rogers that I love. I think the combination of the over the top alphas, the camaraderie between the pack and the continuing story lines and fantastic world building really intrigues me. I have been waiting for Alec’s book for quite some time. He describes himself as a “crotchety old bastard” (he is 44) and let me just get this out of the way – he has a beard. (that noise was my heart thumping.) Getting back on track, Alec is the scary alpha that everyone thinks is a bit crazy. Deep down he is in pain from losing his wife years ago because she was human. Alec is a pureblood shifter and his relatives didn't take to his marriage kindly. He is not over that loss yet, and when he starts to develop protective feelings and more for Carmen, a half-blood, he becomes deathly afraid to be put in a situation where loss will hurt him again.

Carmen is new to the New Orleans area and works as a doctor at a clinic for supernaturals. Her uncle and father are using her as a pawn to gain political advantage. She refuses to participate, and they don’t take kindly to her answer. When a witch attempts to put a spell upon her, it makes her shifter blood go totally out of whack. Alec at first comes to her rescue because he takes care of his people in New Orleans, but his feelings quickly go beyond just protectiveness.

As time marches on, he knows he can’t be without her. This book has more of a slow build up, with some hot smoking tension – wait until you read “the cage” scene. (my heart is thumping again.) Alec loves having sex, he just doesn’t like to be friends with the women he sleeps with – until Carmen comes along. He is so darn intense with such dirty talk. I think we need some examples:

“I’m going to kiss you. Deep. Hard. You okay with that?”

“Believe me, honey, you wouldn’t be quiet riding my cock.”

“Sex with an empath.” She reached up and clenched her hand in his hair. “It doesn’t have to stop when you come.”
His next thrust inched her along the bed. “Sex with a shifter means it just starts again.”

“Maybe it has nothing to with instinct. Maybe I just want to fuck you.”

It was hard to really grasp onto Carmen as I think so many other characters outshine her in this book. Andrew and Kat, who have a huge history introduced to us in previous books, really steal the show at the beginning. Maybe it’s because we only first meet Carmen in this book, and we have had time to grow to love all the other characters, but everyone else seems to have such a strong presence in this series, and I didn’t always feel that with Carmen. I liked her and her scenes with Alec are well done, I just think she is overshadowed.

That being said, Andrew and Kat – I thought I would die from the sexual tension between Alec and Carmen but Andrew and Kat’s tension just blows the roof off the story. I am so excited to see how their “relationship” plays out in their book (I assume they end up together!)Cipher, out next in the series in September 2011.

I suggest you read Crux and Crossroads before diving into Deadlock.

Carmen Mendoza is part human, empath and werewolf. Though she is unable to shift, her father's werewolf family has repeatedly tried to mate her for political gain. Things are taken too far when a witch is hired to cast a spell to bring out her dormant werewolf. Now under the spell that is tearing her apart, Carmen turns to the only man able to calm her wolf. New Orleans unofficially belongs to Alec Jacobson. After seeking revenge against those who killed his human wife, Alec separated himself from his important shape shifting family and now takes care of those in need. Carmen doesn't just stir his protective instincts but ignites a desire in him that drives him to want to shake up the ruling class and make a permanent change in the system.

Alec and Carmen are one of my favorite PNR couples. They work together great without it seeming forced. Alec is an alpha plain and simple. It's in him to protect and dominate. Carmen is a doctor that puts everything she has into her work. Her submission to Alec is something she gives willingly and even craves it. Their relationship moves a bit quickly but the chemistry and primal heat between the two makes it feel as if they have been a couple for years. The arrival of Carmen in Alec's life not only helps heal the wounds left by the murder of his wife but also gives him motivation needed to challenge those who are in the seats of power to make life better for shifters who were not born into a family of privilege. Carmen is with Alec every step of the way even when things become extremely personal and Carmen will have to pick between her own family and Alec.

Aside from the relationship between Alec and Carmen, what I also really liked about Deadlock was the amount of progress that is made in the continuing story line. In werewolf society, changed wolves are looked down upon and are not considered equals to purebloods. Old families have all the important positions and people are easily corrupted by wealth and power. Alec and Carmen know first hand about this because both of their families have tried to use them as pawns in their own movements to obtain a higher status. Alec has been content with just being the alpha of New Orleans but once Carmen's family attempts a potentially deadly spell on her, Alec starts to put plans in action to end the rule of unjust leaders and try and make life better for all.

I enjoyed everything about Deadlock. Carmen is a wonderful heroine that has her own mind and isn't afraid to express her feelings and Alec is the troubled alpha hero that had me wrapped around his strong, masculine fingers. There are moments of laughter and heartache mixed in with right amount of action and touching moments. You know Carmen and Alec have difficult times ahead in order to make significant changes in the political structure but you have confidence they will accomplish what they set out do and give every bit of themselves trying. I know when I start a Moira Rogers book that I'm in for a good read and I think they outdid themselves with Deadlock.

I think at this point it's no secret that I adore Moira Rogers and the worlds she creates. Oh, man! Does she know how to write those swoon-worthy Alpha males. Yum. Beyond the hotness of her main characters, though, the secondary characters come off so beautifully. They're alive and the world they live in moves with them in a very real and organic sense. It's not narrow and limited to the here and now of what you're reading, it's vast and it stretches across states and boundaries.

Alec is everything that wolves should be- he has honor, he protects those that need it, he keeps his city safe even though he's not the "official" Alpha of New Orleans. He's learned that he works better with a group of people he trusts at his back, regardless of what supernatural species they are: Shifter, wizard, or psychic. He's still dealing with the tragedy of his wife's murder and the roll his family played in it. Throwing Carmen into the mix, a half-blood shifter with a psychic bent, brings out all his protective instincts.

I love that characters that we met in previous books get face time in later books. Jackson and Mackenzie didn't crawl under a rock after books 1 and 2, they're still working hard to keep the supernatural community safe and sane. They're still a big part of Alec's life. I adore the familial connections that bind everyone to one another. Cousins, sisters, best friends, mentors- they deepen the story and make it feel whole.

So, yeah. I pretty much loved this book. The sex was hot, the story moved the overall arc forward tremendously, the characters are fantastic.

Alec falls for the new doctor in town and gets entangled in her family's mess.

What I enjoyed:
* I really liked both Carmen and Alec and thought they matched well
* Got to see a lot of characters from previous books
* The shifter politics were interesting

What could have been better:
* Not fond of insta-love
* Boy do Carmen's dad and uncle suck
* The book felt short and I think it was because too much time was thinking about or having sex

The particulars: Urban Fantasy, Samhain, available as e-book

The Review:

The Blurb:
Carmen Mendoza's shapeshifter father abandoned her. Raised by her psychic mother, Carmen ignored her paternal family's political machinations--until the day they decided to use her in their bid for power. Trapped between two worlds and snared by a vicious spell meant to wake her inner wolf, Carmen's only hope is to trust the one man strong enough to soothe her darkest instincts.

Born a pureblood wolf, Alec Jacobson lives as a rebel, the black sheep alpha who protects the supernatural residents of New Orleans from wolf politics. Too bad he can't protect himself from his need for Carmen. Staking a claim on his enemy's niece will turn his city into a battleground, unless he can find a way to stop breaking the rules--and start making them

My impressions:
This book is the third book in the Southern Arcana Series. While it stands alone, I recommend that you read Crux and Crossroads first, to get all the nuances.
The plot is fast paced, and hooks you from page one. Both Carmen and Alec are strong characters, prepared to fight for what they want. They fight each other, the Council, and Carmen’s family. But not necessarily in that order.
Each scene are crackling with tension. Both sexual tension between Alec and Carmen, but also the tension that stems from not knowing what will drop on them next.
It was fascinating to read exactly how they bend the rules. And I bit my nails during the last pages.
So, I truly recommend it for anyone that are interested in a good read.

My least favorite of the series so far. I felt Alec was toned down and that the heroine was just a beta version of the next heroine, Kat. We get to see a lot of very interesting developments with the political world, though. It provided me with a nice sense of satisfaction after the devastation of the last book.

One of my favorite books in this terrific series. Alec Jacobson is one of the intriguing characters of the Southern Arcana, and it was fascinating to finally see him fall for Carmen Mendoza who is more than a match for the powerful alpha wolf.

Carmen Mendoza stays as far away from her father’s side of the family as she can. Right now that’s New Orleans, working in Dr Franklin’s independent medical centre for shapeshifters and others. Instead of allowing herself to be auctioned off in marriage games the ruling elite play, she went to medical school. She’s an empath but one of her brothers is both a shifter and a precognitive seer. A very rare combination.
Kat shows up at the clinic after she had been attacked in the street by a shapeshifter. She knows trouble will follow.
The girl laughed, and it sounded hysterical. “No one can deal with Alec Jacobson when someone he cares about just got punched in the face.”
Carmen recognized the name. She was confident in her ability to handle almost anything, but a black-sheep alpha wolf with a questionable reputation might be beyond her. (Kindle Locations 7513-7515).

The door slammed open.
Alec Jacobson—because it had to be him—was tall, solid and angry as hell. Not that Carmen could feel his emotions, not with the shielding on the room, but it didn't take an empath to see the man was pissed. Dark eyes fixed on Kat as his jaw clenched under his neatly trimmed beard.
“Katherine LeBlanc Gabriel, tell me the bastard's name right now.”
Kat heaved a tortured sigh and gave Carmen a look that clearly said, I told you so. (Kindle Locations 7535-7539).

No-one touches Alec’s people and gets away with it.
He and Jackson capture the shifter and hand him over to the Conclave but he gets magicked out of his cage back at headquarters.
Meanwhile Carmen is attacked as well. By the time Jackson and Alec get to her, a witch has done half a spell on her and she’s giving off every sign of being a newly turned wolf. It’s as bad way to change and done without her permission, it’s an assault. The new wolf magic doesn’t shift her fully, but it makes her want to climb Alec like a tree. And he’s a powerful alpha and he’s right there. Alec has more control than that but there’s something wrong with the spell and it’s latching onto his magic, messing with his own thoughts. When the witch tries to finish the job, Alec just kills her.
The only person who might want to do this to Carmen is her own father, or her uncle. The Uncle holds the council seat, but his brother does everything he’s told including abandon his family years ago when Carmen was about twelve.
Derek’s challenge in book 2 left an empty council seat and allegiances are shifting. Nick’s father is still head Alpha.
Andrew is being trained by some local shifter lions who own a dojo. Alec swears his years are numbered as local Alpha with Andrew around. He and Kat are avoiding each other, and are wounded with it.
Alec and Carmen aren’t sure if their attraction is real.
I can see big similarities with this series and the O’kanes in the Beyond series: there’s a ruling council of a sort, there are leaders in different regions, old rules and an order that resists updating. A mix of politics and violence; and finding true partners within that world. This series dates back to 2009.
That’s not a criticism, just noting the bare bones of both are built on the same structure.

I came to this series after reading the much more polished (and later-written-and-published) Beyond series by the same authors under a different name. I can't help comparing the two, because I loved Beyond so much and wouldn't be reading this otherwise.

One thing Southern Arcana is doing better than Beyond ever did is integrating the character set up for later romances into the earlier books. Alec has been a major character from the beginning and now it's time for him to find love, while Carmen is an entirely new character, but introducing her politically-involved family at this point in the overall arc works well, and sets up Alec's major non-romantic conflict for the book.

(Also I see that the next book is about Kat and Andrew, and their crazy-epic love-avoidance relationship has been set up through three books, now.)

Too bad for me, and my enjoyment of this book, that all I could see Alec as was a proto-Dallas. Gee, look, an self-proclaimed "alpha bastard" who doesn't really want to be involved in society and politics, but ends up having to, because otherwise the world's going to hell in a handbasket.

I shouldn't hold it against Alec that I read the other series first, but I've definitely seen this reluctant-leader type before. And he never gets much personality past that. He's the definition of a hardass with a heart of gold, and Carmen lets him express that, but it doesn't go much farther.

Good thing Carmen is pretty interesting, then, and we get to see a lot of her, not just as a love interest for Alec, but also as a sister to both of her brothers (who become one major and one minor character, judging by the blurbs for the later books) and a daughter deeply conflicted by her upbringing and what being with Alec-the-politician would mean for her future. She's the best part of the book.

OK, as I suspected, much like the Beyond-verse series, this one is getting better and better with each book for me.

There were so many things I liked about this book, starting with TEH HAWT (and this was the first one in the series that's worked for me on that level), but definitely not ending there..

Carmen and Alex probably worked for me as characters even more than Derek and Nick did (and definitely more than Jackson and Mackenzie). Both of them felt smarter, and more like complex, competent adults than either of the previous couples - and there was less in the way of refusing to face feelings or communicate with each other that annoyed me in this one two.

Plus, the frank discussion of submission in vs out of the bedroom was freaking awesome too - I'd love to see that handled more often in shapeshifter stories. Hell, I'd like to see it handled more often in stories that feature some kind of consensual power dynamic, full stop.

But my favourite part of the book was the last 20% or so, when Carmen finally figured out what Wesley's words meant, and I LITERALLY cheered out loud when she asked Alec, "What if you didn't take on the council alone?" That dismantling of the "one great man trope", and Alec bringing Andrew and Julio along with him... that was perfect (actually, while we're talking about dismantling tropes, subverting the "mating bond fuelled instalust" one made me seriously happy too)

I'm planning to take a break from the Southern Arcana set to read some Asian Readathon challenge titles plus my SF/F book club book of the month, but I'm seriously looking forward to picking up Andrew and Kat's story when I go back to it sometime soon)

If you like your paranormal crammed full every sort of paranormal there might be, this series is for you. Warning, the volumes in this series must be read in order as all the world building takes place in the first volume and then each story flows from the one before.

I really loved these. Complicated plots, full of unexpected twists and turns, well-developed characters.

Something I especially appreciated and something that is not common enough on the part of series writers is that the author did the world-building and then told this, the third story and didn't waste my time by building up for the fourth or ending on a cliffhanger. She allowed this story to be this story, not an ad for the next.

This third story is so well-told that I just had to read the next.

The Moira Rogers team is fantastic! I find myself continually drawn into their worlds and caring about their characters to such an extent that I actually cry and feel for them. And the romance is steamy hot! If you love sexy, engaging stories with strong heros and equally strong heroines plus a HEA, I highly recommend any of their books! (Though I am partial to the Bloodhounds series... C'mon, yall - give me some more books, please!)

Hello yes I am absolutely here for this. I feel like this book does a really good job both with its own internal arc (Alec's growth, Carmen's shift into the world she's been gently sidestepping) and with its place in the larger arc of the series - it's paced really well in both cases. Also, HELLO sharing-senses empath sex, thank you, yes please.

I'm so excited to keep on with this series.

The "found family" motif is strong in this series, so the introduction of a new heroine didn't go as well as it could have - I just didn't feel very attached to Carmen when the series began, and the tone of the series is so light that her , coming as it did so close on the heels of her introduction, didn't really move me.

Just...wow. Alec and Carmen were smoking hot. I loved the alpha and empath dynamic and partnership. They way he wanted to take care of her above all else and she wanted to be sure he was supported in return. And the lead up to them getting together was *chef's kiss*

I could read this again and again.

I think there has been, at least one moment in everyone's life, when they rebelled from family expectations and did something, they wanted to do. Carmen, half wolf, half human, and empath was no different. Having no desire to be used as a pawn in her family's political aspirations, she ventured out on her own and made a life for herself, doing what she loved, helping and healing people. She was a strong, independent and caring character that had a likable personality and desires that anyone could relate to. I loved that she tooted to her own horn and stood by her principles no matter what. I can't imagine, is how Carmen felt knowing that her father was behind her abduction and forcing her to become something she was never meant to be. It is one thing for a parent to have hopes for thier children, but another to be so cruel and force them.

There was always something alluring about Alec. While he was the unequivocally alpha, he had a romantic side and a tender heart. I confess, it was refreshing to see. I was pleased, I was able to learn more about him. I didn't realize, how much depth his character truely had, until I read about his past, involving his wife and all the political aspects. It was apparent why he had issues with wolf politics. I suddenly found myself wanting, to rage by his side against the supernatural governement and tell them all to goto hell. I means seriously, who could blame him? I can't believe how grounded his character actually remained. It must be an Alpha thing. I was happy to see that Carmen managed to make his love juices want to flow again. They really were a good match. So, imagine Alec's anger when he discovers that Carmen had gone missing. When he found her, I wanted to cry for her and once again fight beside him. He was so tender and understanding with Carmen, I could have just melted. The sexual tension and interludes were hot enough, to make me do just that.

I love that this series has reoccuring characters that continue to develop and grow. I was especially interested in Andrew and Kat's relationship. In the previous book...Andrew was bitten and turned into a wolf and Kat's powers grew to the point it scare the hell out of everyone. But, even then, I thought they were meant for each other. After reading this book, I still feel that way, but I don't know if I want to. *sighs* In the beginning of this book, I learned, Andrew had dumped Kat and was screwing everything in sight. I had an incrediable urge to beat the crap out of him and give Kat a hug. So, I was happy to see that she met Miguel, Carmen's brother...who interestingly enough was both psychic and part wolf. I wanted to do a happy dance in front of Andrew and say "Haha...she found someone else...so there" Okay, it's a little childish...but, I kinda got a bit pissed off. I couldn't believe he had the nerve, to get all protective, when he learned that Kat was beaten on her date...Well, if he had stayed with her, she wouldn't have...*sighs* Yes...I blame him, it is all his fault. I am not very happy with Andrew. I mean, if I was in Kat's position, I don't think I would take him back...But, I will be anxiously awaiting for the next book, Cypher to find out if she does.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I lost myself within the story, completely enthralled, and experiencing it vicariously through the characters, totally forgetting that I was actually reading about it. Which was easy to do, considering, the easy writing style of Moira Rogers. The characters were well defined with crediable personailites and belivable circumstances. The plot was intriguing, thrilling, and exciting. There was never a dull moment. I finished this book craving more, needing to know what would happen next...I cannot wait to read Cypher, the next installment in the Southern Arcana series.

I read so many good reviews on this book and this series I thought I’d give it ago as I wanted to read some more paranormal romance books and this series had been on my original list for a while and I had been umming and ahhing over it for some time I finally went for the plunge. I am reading this series out of order.

Deadlock didn’t blow me away but it did amaze me and took me on a really lovely journey with some great characters with a quick wit and a brilliant sense of humour that I really adored and enjoyed. I can see why so many people have been reading this series if the previous two books were anything like Deadlock. I was really drawn into the storyline, the characters and the overall plotline that joined everything together. I really liked Carmen and Alec together, however they weren’t my favourite couple and I kept having my attention pulled back to the couple whose book is next, Andrew and Kat! They were the couple that seemed to overtake Deadlock and although I liked this it really did take away some of the enjoyment you got from Carman and Alec’s story. Although their story was a bit more complicated than I thought it would have been, it was easy enough to stay in the loop about what was happening and who certain characters were and things I would have missed in the previous two books. The only way I felt a little lost was the relationship with Kat and Andrew and how they were avoiding each other and what happened between them but the basic info was there. I liked some of the characters so much, Jackson and Mackenzie! I’m going to at least buy the first book Cruz and find out some things I was missing.

Favourite Quotes:

“So calm, but she could feel the rage brewing beneath that facade.”

“I’m not a good man, Carmen. But even so, I wouldn’t change you.”

“But this isn’t a fucking date. Because you’re already mine.”

Overall, I really enjoyed Deadlock and would highly recommend this book. I’m definitely excited to get the next book in the series Cipher out in September this year. My only downside with this series is not something I normally touch on but feel it has to be stated as it made me a little sad. I was unable to buy this book from either of my local bookshops and when I went to look on amazon Deadlock was £12! in paperback which I found quite odd as it wasn’t a new release, however it was much cheaper on kindle and I had a happy choice to still be able to read it.

Rating: Rating: 8.5 out of 10 - GREAT READ!

First line:
Alec wrenched himself out of the path of a flying fist and acknowledged, for the first time in his increasingly long life, that he might be getting old.

Memorable Scenes:
- the love scene at Carmen's place > explosively hot
- the challenge fights > Never thought I'd be so bloodthirsty and enjoy reading them as much as I did

Alec Jacobson is a born wolf shifter. He’s gruff, a commanding and protective straight-shooter who is alpha to the bone. The subtle humor and especially Alec's dry humor made me smile numerous times throughout the book. But there were also moments I choked up at Alec's loneliness and pain that was always there in the background.

Carmen Mendoza is a half-breed wolf and an empath. Apparently I didn’t write much else down about Carmen, which makes me think that I probably was too engrossed by Alec to notice Carmen much. Some heroes do that to me, especially the dirty talking ones.

The love scenes were very hot and absolutely spine-tingling without being overly explicit. They were awesome and not in the least because of Alec's dirty mouth. I absolutely loved the slow, simmering chemistry and banter between Carmen and Alec. It built up nicely to the point of no return and it was one of the elements that kept me reading and not wanting to leave the book for long when I really had to stop because of my pesky non-reading life.

I love the Southern Arcana series. CRUX hooked me, CROSSROADS reeled me in and DEADLOCK sealed the deal. From the first page I was back in the world of alpha shifters and powerful psychics and enjoying myself reading how uber-alpha Alec was romantically brought to his knees by love and Carmen.

As far as the secondary cast is concerned, quite some interesting characters were introduced and took their place next to the familiar ones from CRUX and CROSSROADS. Enough new introductions to assure me this series has the potential of sticking around for awhile. From events and an interaction in DEADLOCK I guessed a future pairing right (as Bree confirmed for me through Twitter) and I can’t wait to read their story.

I really like how Moira Rogers incorporates the family and shifter politics into this series. It’s what keeps it very interesting and also forms a great balance for the romance parts. The different subplots in the book came together brilliantly yet still left some wiggle room for stuff to be played out in future installments and I like it when authors do that in the subtle way it was done in this book.

DEADLOCK had a feel of rightness and ease to it that made it the best of the series for me to-date. Going back to the Southern Arcana world and its characters was like a comforting trip home. And if you haven’t embarked on this series yet, please do…you will not regret adding another addictive series to your paranormal reading palette.

Favorite Quotes:
He kissed the way she'd seen him live, reckless arrogance and power and an intensity that bordered on intimidating.

"Belonging to me means you get what you need, whenever I can give it. Tonight it means me proving that you set off every dominant, animal urge I've got, whether you're stoned on magic or not."

If this book is any indication of the rest of my reads in 2011, I am going to be a happy, happy girl this year - Deadlock kicked ass!!

I have been a fan of Moira Rogers' Southern Arcana series since the first book, Crux. Deadlock, book 3 in the series, is my favorite so far:

Alec Jacobson is about as Alpha as they come - he's the unofficial leader of the New Orleans area "pack", and a lot of people rely on him to keep things running without interference from the official pack hierarchy up in New York. In previous books he's been a bit gruff, tough, and bad-ass, but you know he's got a heart of gold. In Deadlock we see some of Alec's past... we learn he was married to a human, and she died because of it. He hasn't really gotten over it, and pushes himself to protect the supernaturals in New Orleans so that they can live and love like he didn't get to do.

Carmen Mendoza is a doctor who is new to New Orleans - she's come to work in the supernatural hospital. She's half-werewolf and an empath. She's also got a very power-hungry father and uncle, and they're disappointed that they haven't been able to marry her off to another powerful werewolf family. When she refuses to meet their latest potential suitor, they decide to take matters into their own hands using powerful, dangerous magic.

Alec's protective instincts go into overdrive to save Carmen, and when she's near him she feels safe. The heat between them is scorching hot; I love that a 44-year-old man and a 30-something woman get to have this amazing, sexy, primal romance.

I also felt like this book did a great job of focusing on the rest of the supernatural community, both in and outside of New Orleans. Political issues that we've been watching in the first two books come to a head and I am love-, love-, loving where that storyline is going.

I can't do a proper review without mentioning Andrew and Kat. OMG I need their story NOW!!! Their pain and desire leaped off the page. I want these two to get an HEA so badly!

The combination of the love story, the political machinations, and Andrew and Kat's yearning storyline made for a fabulous read! When I wasn't reading Deadlock I was wondering about the characters; I love it when a book grabs me like that.

I know this review has been all over the place; I feel like I'm pointing in every direction and saying "how cool is this", and "look at that", and "check this out", "and this too!", but there were so many good things going on!

I'll leave you with this little fun thing: One of the locations in Deadlock is Algiers Point, a small neighborhood on the Westbank of New Orleans. I've lived in Algiers for over 20 years, and for many of those years lived 2 blocks away from Lavergne Street, which is specifically mentioned in the book. In addition, Alec mentions that "they've got someone in the 4th", which is where one of my brothers works. You know as soon as I read that I wanted to call him and ask him which of his co-workers he thought was a werewolf! So those things took an already enjoyable read and made it a bit more fun for me ;)

I do recommend reading Crux and Crossroads, the first two books in the series, before reading Deadlock. It can be read as a stand-alone, but will be much more enjoyable if you know all the background players and their history.

DEADLOCK is the third book in Moira Rogers’ Southern Arcana series, our hero is Alec Thompson, we’ve met him in the previous books he is warlock and Jackson’s partner. For anyone new to the series, I personally think you would be better starting from the beginning and working your way through. But enjoy, this is a great paranormal series.

It is one of those romances that manages to mix a fantastic love story with really gritty plot-lines. Rogers isn’t afraid to deliver shockers, kill off, or badly injure a character if it’s required. Which is just how I like it. I love the thrills, spills and shocks. As a lover of urban fantasy, I enjoy the paranormal romances that bridge the two genres.

I adored Alec! There is something powerfully handsome about him. He has dedicated his life to protecting and helping those in need or shapeshifters weaker than himself. He is reassuringly sexy in his confidence and belief in his own strength and abilities. I’ve definitely got a soft spot for him!

So our heroine had to be good for me to like her! Luckily she was… Exotic, intelligent, brave. Carmen is a doctor recently transferred to the supernatural clinic. A psychic empath with a shifter father, family politics and dark magic suddenly blow out of control and get her in a whole load of trouble of Alec can help her with.

We see a lot more of the wolf politics that we’ve seen in previous novels and Alec and Carmen end up at the heart of it. The corrupt system ruling the werewolves has grown more difficult and intolerable with each book, and the new generation have grown more and more frustrated. This leads to a superb climax and a very surprising development. I really cannot say anymore, you need to read it for yourself

The first half of the book was slower on the action. It focused primarily on Carmen’s family and predicament, the burgeoning chemistry and love story between Alec and Carmen. Which meant most of the action and significant plot developments seem to be compacted into the latter pages. These pages were a thrilling ride. It didn’t mean that the first half of the book was boring, not in the least, just more steady, and the romance really does grow with sizzling intensity.

This is without talking about the developments to some of the other well known characters in the series. Andrew and Kat, it’s just so painful to watch, thank God their book is next! Carmen’s brothers are great new additions to the cast, we of course see Mackenzie and Jackson again, as well as guest appearances from Nicole and Michelle to name a few. I enjoyed their stories as much as the main, and hate to say it again but honestly Kat and Andrew, I really can’t wait….

VERDICT:

I thoroughly enjoyed DEADLOCK, the political manoeuvrings and developments are really significant in this book. Alec and Carmen are a super couple, Alec a completely awesome hero. The ending was a roller coaster, hold on to your hats! And fans of Kat and Andrew hold onto your hearts!

After what felt like a never ending wait we finally get the chance to dive into the wonderful world of the Southern Arcana series again. I loved the first books and Deadlock didn't disappoint at all. I just say Alec. *insert swoony voice*

Carmen Mendoza is an empath working as a doctor in the local independent hospital. She knows how the shapeshifter politics work first hand because her ambitious father left her and her family to secure his political station. She put her back on everything connected to this prejudiced and discriminating system and tries her best to stay out of it. But her family just won't let it go. Her uncle and father are working together to right the "wrong" he did by marrying her mother. They want her to accept an "appropriate" husband who had the right position in the werewolf society. But Carmen won't budge. She's a strong woman and won't give in. I love her- Carmen is compassionate, strong and won't back down even from the strongest alpha. Being an empath makes her better at her job and improves the way she understands and helps people. I really liked her. She's a good person but her character didn't stand out enough.

But then we have Alec. *swoons* That guy makes my knees weak. He's the big bad alpha- possesive and protective of what he sees as his. Stubborn but also very sexy. He's a caretaker and sets everyone else's needs over his own. His past is branded with heartbreak and betrayal and he keeps his heart behind tons of shields to avoid being hurt again. I loved him to pieces. He's my kind of alpha hero. Strong, passionate, dirty but not overbearing or too stubborn. He always said the right things to make my toes curl and I really start to swoon again every time I think about him. He's in my top 5 heroes of 2010- and all mine. ;)

As always the worldbuilding and pace of this book was masterly done. I was drawn into the story from the start. This world is one of this rare gems that makes you think- it combines a paranormal world with a political system based on prejudices and intolerance that make you think about the world we live in. I love when a book makes me think. But the best thing about the Southern Arcana series for me is the way Moira Rogers includes the sidecast. Each story doesn't focus 100% on our couple but we also see the characters we loved in the previous books. And I so can't wait to read about Kat and Andrew- and I swear to god these two deserve a HEA. I so can't wait.

Deadlock is a great addition to this series. It's an action packed paranormal romance with a swoon worthy hero and a lovable heroine. Moira Rogers writes in a way that draws you in and won't let you go till you read the last word. For me her books are going on top of my tbr pile as soon as I get them. If you haven't started this series yet: what are you waiting for? Get your hands on Crux and believe me you won't regret it for one second. Great book in an awesome series.

Alec Jacobson is an Alpha wolf and the unofficial head honcho of New Orleans even if he won’t claim a title of authority for himself. Anything happens in the Shifter community and everyone turns to Alec or runs away from him as fast as they can. Alec is most commonly referred to as a jerk, but he is a titan among shifters and the man who takes in shifters who have been forcibly changed. He teaches them how to live as wolves. His past is a brutal one, it keeps him from seeking power, but his time has come and his choices removed. He must fight those in power to save the people he loves.

Dr. Carmen Mendoza comes from a powerful shifter family. It’s unfortunate that she was born only part wolf. Carmen is an empath with a human mother. Her father abandoned them when she was a child because he wanted more power. Once again her father wants power only this time he needs Carmen to get it and he is willing to do anything achieve his goals.

When Carmen is kidnapped Alec is on the case. He finds her but that is only the beginning. Alec cannot deny the pull between the two of them and neither can Carmen. Together they will begin a dangerous game of survival. Alec’s only goal is to find out who wants to harm Carmen, why and eliminate them.

The shifter world gets turned upside down in Deadlock. Change has been coming for a long time. Alec has been backed into a corner. He can no longer sit on the sidelines and watch the people he cares about be treated like pawns in a game. The time to act is now or never. Who will be left alive when the dust settles?

I am a huge fan of this series. Moira Rogers has created so many wonderful characters within the series. I must admit that I was a little bit disappointed when I discovered the third book in the series was going to be Alec and Carmen’s book. Like many I have been dying for Andrew and Kat’s book, but let me just say I was definitely not disappointed in Deadlock. I look back now and realize I would have missed out on a truly beautiful story.

Deadlock is a fantastic exciting addition to the series. Alec and Carmen are outstanding! I am so in love with Alec it’s ridiculous. Alec and Carmen are phenomenal together. They will tear the house down with the fiery passion stirring between them. Deadlock captured my attention from page one and I remained riveted throughout. There is a lot going on in Deadlock being the third in the series it may be a little difficult to understand the politics in the shifter world and you miss some details regarding supporting characters. I recommend starting from the beginning of this series but it’s not totally necessary to enjoy Deadlock it just makes it more fulfilling. The Southern Arcana series is one of my all time favorites. Anyone that enjoys novels featuring domineering Alpha wolves and the sassy women determined to show them the error of their ways will love Deadlock.

How I got this book: eARC from author

The Moira Rogers duo strikes again with the third installment of the Southern Arcana Series, and my favorite story so far! Alec is the pureblood werewolf living in New Orleans that does his best to keep the peace, train new wolves, provide sanctuary to those who need it, and defy rules every chance he gets. When Carmen, the newest doctor in the supernatural hospital in the city gets kidnapped and roughed up, Alec takes it hard.

Carmen’s family has been one of the political heavy weights for some time now, and when she gets kidnapped and has her inner wolf ramped up, she has to turn to Alec for both protection and help getting under control. But things with Alec are passionate and hot, and the heat turns up in more ways than one. But when push comes to shove, are these two going to be able to protect each other, and the other supernatural’s in New Orleans?

I’ve been loving on Alec ever since he first walked onto the page, and he really shines in this one. I always knew that Alec the bad boy, constant rule breaker, and all around bad ass would be somewhat of a softy when push comes to shove. And I just loved that he proved me right. I love the fact that he was a complete sucker for Carmen, wanting to be a better man for her, I love that he wanted the best for all the supernatural’s in New Orleans, proving that although he gave up wolf politics long ago, he still has a knack for it.

I was really excited that Rogers gave us a better look into the social structure and political structure of the wolves in their world. While I can’t usually stand any and all talk about politics, I enjoyed how thorough, well thought out, and extensively they imagined their world to be. Plus, the way that Alec was able to come in and totally dominate the council… *swoon* So perfect!

Although Carmen and the Mendoza brothers are new characters, I really felt connected with them right off the bat. Carmen is an amazing character, and really is the perfect fit with Alec: the calm to his storm, the foundation to his plans. Likewise, her brothers Miguel and Julio really jumped off the page at me, capturing my attention and demanding we love them. I have to say, I can’t wait for these two to get their stories!!

I felt like this book really moved the series along as well. I can see where Rogers is taking the story, and am really liking the direction we are headed! Andrew and Kat get plenty of page time, and the foundation to their story (Cipher, releases Sep 2011) was laid out in a way that has me anxious for fall!

All in all, I give Deadlock 5 out of 5 werewolf council take overs!

Big things happen in this book. Big. Things. I am definitely a fan of the Southern Arcana series and this installment entrenched me even deeper into the world. I am more committed than ever. But it wasn’t my favorite installment in the series. To be clear… It was good, but the romance just didn’t resonate quite as much for me as the last one did.

This is Alec’s story, and honestly, he wasn’t even on my radar for a book of his own –at least, not yet. I can see the attraction, though. He is alpha and grunty, and deep down he is licking his wounds from the murder of his wife. Ripe for a mended heart, right?

Carmen is a new doctor at the local supernatural clinic. She is the daughter of a wolf shifter, but only on her father’s side. She is an empath, but she isn’t a wolf. Her father and uncle are a bit obsessed with shifter politics and want to drag her into it. They don’t take no for an answer, unfortunately, and target her for a magic attack. It’s a good thing she caught Alec’s eye when Kat was brought into the clinic. He swoops in to save the day and the two of them swiftly become tangled up in one another on a primal level. Of course, later, it turns into something much more.

In a lot of ways, this book felt like a turning point for the series. Yes, there was evidence of a bigger picture in the earlier books, but here, the scope of everything seemed to grow exponentially. We’re introduced to more characters who will obviously help provide future stories down the road. And the actions of our main cast change the paradigm in which the New Orleans shifters have been living.

It’s significant stuff, and it pushed the romance back a little for me. Also a factor was the speed in which Carmen and Alec fall in love. We’re talking, what, two weeks? I know all the empathic stuff was mitigating, but I had a hard time believing in the evolution of their feelings –at least to the depth in which they surface. I could also do without the dom/ sub stuff in the bedroom, though it is admittedly mild.

I did like both characters, though. And they do seem to fit. I didn’t feel as connected to Carmen as I did to Alec, but I’ve “known” him longer. He is definitely sexy with his blunt, dirty talk… his manly beard and his older alpha thing. I like that he is a little older than the average hero. –Another plus, the Kat/ Andrew thing is addressed somewhat and I am beyond ready for that book. It looks to be a doozy.
