It was interesting to see where the story of this series will lead after the defeat of Lha'saa in the previous issue, Elves Vol. 16: Red Like Lava. This is the story of Ilaw, a young Sylvan Elf with the black blood of Dark Elves inside of him. Their curse runs through his veins, something he realizes too late. Raised by his uncle, half-Sylvan half-Blue Elf, Ilaw is trying to make sense of it all. To find out what is wrong with him. And eventually, to make a choice. To swim or to drown. For a while, his story runs parallel with the main storyline with Lha'saa, even Ora, Queen of Sylvan Elves, making an appearance. There is also an old friend for those familiar with the Dwarves series. It's Sriza from the Sriza of the Temple. Jarry makes a great story once again with Maconi doing art which feels lazy in places. Not on the same level as before.

After the momentous events of Vol 16, I was curious to see where this comic would be heading. Well, it seems we are in for some new characters. Oh for those of you that are linguistically challenged the title means "The Black blood of the Sylvan elves" and that is what the story is about.

Ilaw is a 7-year-old Sylvan elf. He loves the woods and the lifestyle, but one day in a fit of rage he murders his little sister. His parents send him off with his uncle, a pirate. While he learns under his uncle's harsh tutelage, we find that the Dark Elves are looking for him. His adventures take him through the forest of Duhann, where he meets the Queen. But his encounters with the Dark Elves leave a mark and in time he finds his way to the Dark Elf citadel.

While this is the starting volume of what seems to be new characters arcs, it is excellent. I am curious to see what Ilaw will do and if he will embrace his Dark Elf heritage.

Great art and story. Highly recommended.

A new character-focused story, fresh and interesting.

With Lha'saa been defeated, the story deals with the aftermath of what’s happening in the world of Elves from the eyes of Ilaw, a wood elf turning to black, the story focuses on his growth and struggles with his inner demon.

Nicolas Jarry is the best writer among the five-story makers from the Elves series when it comes to making a complex and complete character-driven story, his protagonist always comes with multiple shades of dark which makes it an absorbing read. The art is as usual superb only adding to the reading experience.

I read the English translated version of this French comic titled Elves Vol. 17: The Black Blood of the Sylvan Elves

PS: I did feel I was missing out on background story of the Dwarven Sriza and found out he has a book dedicated all to himself Nains T08 : Sriza du Temple

I like the way the little boy was 'protected' but something made it worse. His family knew he was a black elf but still try to give him another life, many could have been spared as they just gave him up.
I'm curious what will come of him because I don't remember seeing him in the other and I'm at 25/
