It's an odd book. It's marketed as if it's a sci-fi/futuristic novel: "If your future is written on your palms, can you change it by scarring your hands?"

It's not sci-fi at all. It's not even close.

I almost didn't finish reading it because of the prologue, which is weird, psychopathy, serial killerish, and practically unconnected to 3/4 of the book.

It's almost as if there's 2 books here - the first 3/4 of the books is about a man named Peter, who loses his wife on his wedding day, and ends up teaching at a school in Manchester. There's a subplot involving the teachers, one of whom is a bit crazy, and another subplot involving the abuse of one of his students, and how Peter accidentally falls in love with her in an internet chat room.

The last 1/4 reconnects to the Prologue, and is about the abused student who is kidnapped. You assume from the story Peter is the one who kidnaps her, but turns out to be the batshit crazy teacher, Emma. I suppose I should have realized it was her (there's a VERY disturbing scene earlier on in the book about Emma and a puppy), but didn't see that twist coming. This plot appears and is resolved fairly quickly. Other than the fact is involves the same characters, it's almost as if the Kindle version accidentally smooshed two completely different books together, that's how jarring this plot is to the rest of the novel.

I can't say I enjoyed the book, and I don't know if I'd read it again.

This book was an interesting read all the way thru.....the ending had me squirming a bit and trying to figure out the bad guy was a bit crazy for me to figure out. There is abuse.....death.....heartbreak....sadness....happiness.....mystery....and other interesting things that are all pulled together to make a very involving story with interesting and strange characters. Once I started reading the book it was hard to put down....not bad for a free book!

Talented writing, enough so that I finished a story that I didn't like. The ordinary is interwoven with tragedy in a believable way. Not comfortable reading material and I would love to hear this author's voice in a more redemptive story but he captures a truth about our world that shows his talent. The writing put life into the patchwork that it is.

If your future is written in your palms, can you change it by scarring your hands?

Peter has lost the love of his life, Maggie is a young girl broken by abuse, Bernard has a glint in his eye and a slur in his soul, and Emma is powered by a hidden past. In "The Scars" we find love. loss, beauty, darkness, desire and violence. In "The Scars" we find the saddest loves.

This is a well-written story. It's not the easiest book to read due to the healing process Peter is going through after losing someone he was very close to. I loved the people and connections he made along the way all helped him. The characters are well-developed.

The prelude to this book is kind of misleading... Here is how it actually goes for the 738 ereader pages:
Chapters 1&2 Touching
Chapters 3-10 stage setting and border line dull. Nothing really happens
Chapters 10 - 50 pages left in the book - kind of disturbing
Last 50 pages - pretty exciting and this is where the prelude comes in...

So if you read the prelude and you think the whole book will be that way, it is not. Now, this book was bad per se, just kind of slow in middle. It was interesting enough to keep me going, with promises of secrets, but I came close to not finishing it a couple of times. It was well written, I thought, and I'm sure some people out there probably like this kind of book, whereas I just found it "ok".

I'm honestly, not even sure who to recommend it to.

I know this isn't a very informative review, but I don't like to give anything away. I guess in a nutshell, if you like character development (a lot of it) & not necessarily anything too exciting go for it.

Let me start off by saying that this is a very good story about loss, longing, desire, and tragedy. The story follows Peter, a man who just lost someone very close to him, as he journeys through his life trying to keep it together. It is a story about a broken man just trying to keep going when the pain threatens to destroy him. This is a great story about his journey, the connections he makes, and the people he meets. The story is written very well and the characters are well developed.

However, I found it hard to get through the story. This is entirely due to being misled. Does the cover look like it belongs to a drama about a man trying to find himself again? No. Does the first line of the synopsis ("If your future is written on your palms, can you change it by scarring your hands?") make you believe that this is a story about doing just that to somehow change your future? Yes. It is all very misleading and I found myself confused for at least the first half of the story because of it. Aside from that, I'd say the story is very good.

I don't often write reviews these days, but I wanted to leave a few quick words about this novel.

The only things that kept this from earning a five star were the odd interludes in between the chapters for the first three quarters of the book and some, sorry to say, rather bad copy editing; grammar, punctuation, formatting, etc, which took me out of the story more often than necessary.

But putting the technical and editing issues aside, the writing is top notch, and you get a gripping and engrossing character drama/ mystery (a little hard to tell from the cover, as it gives the impression of horror ) that takes what could have been tired old tropes and makes them fresh, interesting, and damn near addicting.

This was good, but difficult for me to read as there was a lot of violence and implied sexual violence in the storyline. It was a hard read for me, partly because I was too caught up in the story to easily set it aside and yet it was really uncomfortable for my pysche to continue reading it. I am pretty sure I will have nightmares from this one, but perhaps it's a bit more horror than to my tastes. Well written, just not to my personal tastes

No matter how deeply wounded you think you are, there is always someone with a wound that is deeper. This book allows the reader to see that no matter how much control you think you have, there is always an outside force that truly has control. A little on the slow side, draggy in spots but overall a good reading experience.

I got up to 81% and just had to stop. I couldn't get past the idea that the main character continued an online relationship with his student, despite knowing it was his student. The book was well written, but there were some disturbing parts that I skipped over and tried to ignore, but in the end, I just couldn't. Again, the writing was fantastic, but the topic did not appeal to me at all.

This book was disturbing and disgusting, and not at all in a good way. It was just downright TERRIBLE and made me sick. I couldn't even finish it. It is well written, but the story is just so messed up and so... frightening that it was too much to stomach. I would absolutely hate to meet this author, to say the least. I'm kinda terrified of him based off this extremely f'd up book.

It was interesting. Weird. Not the love story I expected. Then again I wasn't expecting it to take place within a school. It's a twisted view on a reality that unfortuately has its scary truths. Not sure it was a book that I would reccomend except for it was free for the kindle. UNFORTUNATELY, it seemed as those bits were missing with in the beginnings of most chapters.

Generally enjoyed it but felt the second half didn't quite live up to the first. The ending was nicely done if the lead up to it wasn't entirely convincing for me. Tennant is certainly someone to look out for.

Weird...sad. The plot twist at the end was not expected. I found some of the formatting of the ebook to be a bit hard to handle. I had lines missing and spelling off....Not sure this would have improved the book, though.

I was impressed with the writing and characterisation in this tale of ordinary people dealing with difficult life events. The "thriller" element was subtle but built to a great ending.
