Terminal Damage: A Do Some Damage Collection

Rate this book
Imagine the worst day of your life. Now imagine that day in an airport. The eight authors of DoSomeDamage.com bring together eight stories of murder and mayhem in these linked stories -- tied together by a single, horrible visit to the airport.

From the grandfather in Joelle Charbonneau's SKATING AROUND THE LAW to a team of thugs from Jay Stringer, the stories here show what happens when all hell breaks loose on the concourse.

In addition to Charbonneau and Stringer, the collection boasts stories from John McFetridge (LET IT RIDE, DIRTY SWEET), Dave White (WHEN ONE MAN DIES, THE EVIL THAT MEN DO), Russel D. McLean (THE LOST SISTER, THE GOOD SON), Byron Quertermous (A LOAD OF QUERTERMOUS), Scott D. Parker (ROUND ONE), and Steve Weddle (NEEDLE Magazine).

From the introduction by Jason
"Each member of DSD brings their own voice and perspective to this captivating story, the rush of noir carrying many different scents with it. Think about your worst day. Got it in your mind? Reliving it? Well, it’s a picnic with apple pie and wine spritzers compared to what you’re about to read.
So whether you’ve already been exposed to the wiles of the Do Some Damage crew, or you’re looking for a story with so much nitroglycerin that you won’t just miss your subway stop, but blow the station right off the map, check out this anthology. But when you realize your hands and feet are bound, you can’t get up from the seat, and strangers and peering at your slack-jawed reaction in jealousy, don’t say I didn’t warn you."

I never knew there was so much going on in those boring old terminals. Speaking of that, Terminal Damage is just the ticket -- or maybe boarding pass -- to get you through the interminable waiting that goes on in them. Expertly crafted stories by expert craftsman. What you waiting for? Check your bags. Grab a plastic chair. Put your earbuds in and just ENJOY! (Don't get so enthralled you miss your plane though.)

The fact that it took me nearly 2 years to read this probably tells you as much as the rating. It's a collection of short stories by different authors based around an airport. At times there seem to be connections between the stories but this is never really capitalised on in an interesting way. A couple of the early stories are actually pretty good, but in the second half the quality drops off a lot.

I liked how some of the short stories tied together, seeing the same scene from different points of view.

That said, the massive number of mistakes in this book make it almost unreadable. Missing words, extra words, repeated sentences, sentences terminated with commas instead of periods, dialog without quotes, etc. Makes a great case for the traditional publishing model over self-publishing.

A great set of short stories by a variety of authors all with a common theme of an airport terminal. It's incredible how many different ways writers can approach the same topic. Each story is unique, enjoyable and challenging. Enjoy!
