Adrian Gilbert is a British author and historian who writes primarily on the subject of military history – particularly relating to wars of the 20th century.
This was a good book and the author is no apologist of the Waffen SS. While acknowledging that the Waffen SS « maintained a consistently high level of battlefield performance throughout the war » and that their combat record showed them as genuinely first rate troops, he is quick to acknowledge their participation in many atrocities during the war. The book has a short history of the SS in each of it chapters as it starts with its development as a bodyguard and then as a ceremonial troop, to its evolution into a many division combat arms. There are lots of good pictures of the Waffen SS on all the fronts and during all their campaigns and activities. It is an easy book to read a reveals one of the most disgusting and horrific elements of the German war machine.
Some good snippets of information on the Waffen SS. This is more a pictorial history so not much in the way of written information but good descriptions of the pictures are given. Good resource/reference book for projects.
