The Innocents
The whole world was about to change, and no one would be affected more deeply than Dorothea and Iris Crosby, sisters—identical twins—born to the wealth and social standing of New York City's Park Avenue. It was 1914, and while life in Manhattan seemed to center on grand balls and exotic parties, in Europe everything was coming undone. World War I was about to explode, and when it did it would involve many thousands of young Americans already heading overseas.
Aroused by the perils of the rest of the world, Dorothea and Iris decided to join the American Red Cross in France. The authorship of the book was outstanding. The author described in detail the experience of the sisters during the war and after. She also beautifully described France, the architecture found there both before and after the war. I understood France before, during and after the War. Such a gay time in history was interrupted by WWI.

an interesting tale of wealthy twins whose lives are drawn to volunteer as WW1 red cross nurses after seeing the tragedy of the triangle shirt waist fire. While mostly a depressing read it does provide some insight into how the wealthy reacted to the tragedies of the early 1900's.

Wonderful book! Made the era come alive!

I loved this book. It is tragic and brutal at times, but the story will hook you immediately and the characters - all of them - are beautiful and haunting.

Interesting premise, but the characters were too melodramatic.
