In the shadows, not all the monsters have claws.

Bay City Paranormal Investigations, Book 3

While leading an amateur ghost-hunting expedition in the mountains of North Carolina, the BCPI team gets an urgent call to investigate sightings of a weird, frightening creature in the forest near a remote Smoky Mountain lodge.

The case hints of another interdimensional gateway, and Sam Raintree wants no part of it. The last one nearly took the life of his boss and lover, Dr. Bo Broussard. Now that they’re finally together and working through their problems, Sam wants nothing to jeopardize their progress.

Yet he can’t ignore the fact that he is the only one with the unique psychokinetic ability to permanently close the gateway that could be threatening the lodge and its few remaining guests. If, indeed, that’s the source of the sightings.

There’s only one way to find out—split up the team and hit the trail. Once on the scene, a missing man, a grisly discovery, and a moment of carelessness reveal secrets much different—and far uglier—than anyone expected.

Secrets which not only put their lives in danger, but could provide Sam with an escape from the portals. If he’s willing to take the chance.

This book has been previously published.

Warning: Contains explicit sex between lovers in an idyllic mountain hideaway, graphic language when they’re interrupted by murderous ghosts, and violent deeds perpetrated by otherworldly creatures.

Ally Blue penned her first tale at age eight, relating the breathless terror of her little sister’s not-quite-fatal encounter with a bee in the backyard. That was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with storytelling. She now writes gay romance of all flavors, and has recently branched into writing her first love: horror. She continues her neverending quest to scare herself. She is not a hippie or a brain surgeon, no matter what her kids’ friends say.

My Review: This third installment of Blue's Bay City Paranormal Investigations series was entertaining, if not quite so gripping as the first two books. Perhaps because the mystery element was fairly tame in this book, I found it didn't hold my attention as determinedly as the others. That isn't to say it isn't a good book. I enjoyed it. The focus in this book was most definitely on the relationship between Sam and Bo, and sets up a whole new issue for them to fight about.

What's most interesting is that even when you might think further impediments to a couple's happiness would be artificial and contrived, Blue manages to make the conflict real and sympathetic, while keeping the characters believable, and the relationship interesting. It also sets up so many potential pitfalls for the rest of the series that it's impossible not to keep reading.

My Recommendation: This was a bit of a break from the intensity of the first two books, but not a dull read by any means. Pick it up, but know you'll probably want to read the first two books first. They're well worth it.

How hot is Bo on the cover?! The model is way too young but yum.

Anyway, this is a standard entry for this series, although less danger and peril than usual which I find annoying. I think the focus of thus book was a lesson on homophobia and what it feels like. I think Blue did a moderate job on the topic but the bad person was just too ridiculous. There was a lot of potential here but it just kind of never went anywhere. Still, there was a lot of Dean in this one and he has quickly become my favorite character. I'm glad to see he has his own book later in the series. Bo was much more likable ad I'm starting to warm up to him. I might even like him in the next one, we'll see. The sex was fairly hot, although its ridiculous that they ant keep their hands off each other. I mean, I know they're men but come on already. At one point they know they can't be in the same room together because they know they don't have time for sex.

But it was a pleasant,, fast read, and I'll be reading the next one soon.

This one was less about PNR and more about the romance. I loved seeing that Bo is breaking out of the closet and is more loving towards Sam. This book also deals more about homophobia and you really don't want to believe that there are people out there that act like this but it does happen, still happens today. Even though I still want the PNR portion to continue, I want to know more about the "monsters" and what their story is, what are they, where do they really come from & why are they doing what it is they are doing. I can't wait to continue on with these series.

Well. It's not... bad, per se? But not particularly exciting, either. Reading this felt more like a chore than anything else, partly because I kept finding small details that annoyed me.

Like the previous two books, I'm quite interested in the world itself and the characters, but everything just drags. And the sequence of events is pretty much the same every time, with minor changes. It was nice to see that Sam and Bo are more secure in their relationship now, but the lack of Bo's kids is seriously confusing at this point. I mean, I get that Sam might not get to see them because his and Bo's relationship is still a secret, but, like, Bo never calls them? He says they're his world, but he barely talks about them and we never really see them. They're basically an accessory at this point and it just feels really weird.

Also, for being supposedly non-amateur investigators, the Scooby Gang is pretty amateurish. As in, it takes them AGES to come up with theories and reach conclusions. And I don't mean that it takes them ages to find the RIGHT theory or conclusion, but that they barely do any thinking. And, if it happens, the process is very rarely described. Usually, we just get an explanation once a character has reached a conclusion, but never quite the path that took them there. I don't know, it just makes the mystery feel very shallow and, at times, makes the characters look like idiots, because they don't point out the obvious clues until all of it has already been laid out in the open.

All in all, it's not a bad book, as said, but just... boring? There's too much that just annoys me. Like the cops who, when they had their guns drawn and were not aiming at someone, were pointing their guns to the sky. What kind of idiot does that? If the gun happens to go off, you might still kill someone once the bullets comes back down because, you know, gravity. If you're not planning to shoot someone, you point it at the ground.

Oh! And also! WHY does Sam insist on unbraiding Bo's hair when they have sex? I mean, okay, I get that long hair is sexy, but the man's hair reaches to his waist. How in the world do they manage to have sex without his hair getting in the way? Or getting stuck on their sweaty bodies? I can barely sleep without getting tangled up in my hair, and you're trying to tell me that these two have hot monkey sex and his hair remains smooth and well-behaved the entire time? I don't buy it.

Okay, fine, these might be minor details in the grand scheme of things, but it just feels... amateurish? All of it, really. So yeah. This will be the last book I read in this series. I don't regret reading these three books, but I'm not at all interested in continuing, either.

Fascinating story again. I loved the paranormal investigation, ended up finishing it all in one day, I especially read during lunch break which fell right in the middle of the action. I was riveted for the first 80%.
I fell that the ending dragged a bit after wrapping up the investigation and focused too much on repeating how much Bo and Sam loved each other, but that's probably just my preference. I like my investigation with a side of coupley investigators, while those books are more investigation and 30-40% getting together and navigating their new romance. Pretty sure that most people love it. Personally, I just read those parts in speed reading and everything works out :D

I started this series because of the horror component. This boom was just boring. I genuinely enjoyed maybe two or three chapters.

Good

It was still a great book, not my favorite but I'm still in love with each of the characters. They each touch at my souls.

Less plot than previous volumes and more focus on the relationship

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 7/10

PROS:
- I’m becoming increasingly attached to the two main characters. Their relationship feels more deep and intimate with each book, and I can see this being a forever relationship--assuming that one of them doesn’t die an early death at the hands/claws of some evil inter-dimensional creature.
- I also really like one of the secondary characters, Dean. He’s funny, selfless, kind, and a very supportive friend to both Sam and Bo. (see cons below also)
- A development in Sam and Bo’s sex life that I’ve been waiting for since Book 1 and anticipating since Book 2 finally happens in this volume. (Yay!) Their sex life is also more realistic than those of most characters in this genre. Sam actually admits at one point that “Twice a day wasn’t the norm for them,” and I thought, “All right. Thirty-something characters who don’t act like 18-year-olds.”
- The plot is not at all as creepy as the first two volumes’ plots. I didn’t particularly mind, though; I didn’t find it boring like another reviewer did. This book just backs away from intense plotlines and focuses instead on further developing Sam and Bo’s relationship. The plot in this book does take an unexpected turn toward the end: it didn’t really surprise me when it happened, but the climax wasn’t what I thought it would when I started reading the book.

CONS:
- Dean is one of four other members of the Bay City Paranormal Investigations team (other than Bo and Sam), and while I like him a lot, I have almost no opinion about the other three. David, Cecile, and Andre (to a lesser degree) all seem pretty flat and uninteresting to me. They’re missing from the majority of this volume because the team splits so that they can investigate two cases at once, and while I happily read about Bo, Sam, and Dean’s adventures, I didn’t miss the other three characters at all.
- Blue does not shy away from violence or unpleasantness in these books. Sometimes the blunt, sudden way she describes people’s deaths shocks me.
- The sex is hot. However, I’m kind of a fan of cleanliness. I understand being attracted to someone because of the way he smells (the way HE smells, not his cologne), but after three days of not bathing? I can’t picture myself throwing myself at someone and thinking that he smells/tastes better than he ever has before.

Overall comments: This volume probably isn’t as well-rounded as the previous book in that it doesn’t have quite the plot that one has, but I enjoyed it all the same. I’m not sure this is the place to start if you haven’t read the first two volumes in the series, though.

The first book I read in this series was for sure good but in the end I wasn’t sure if it was a romance; that story indeed was more about the BCPI agency than the relationship between Sam and Bo. More than once I had to go back reading some chapter to actually pick up the sign of a blossoming love relationship between the two men, and when the novel reached its end, the love relationship didn’t, on the contrary it was more or less at its beginning and it was not even sure being long-lasting. That was the situation at the beginning of book 2, with Bo still in the closet, his marriage in crisis but not closed and Sam who had his moments of discouragement, so much that he was even tempted by another man. Starting book 3, this book, Sam and Bo are still plodding up an hard path, but I’m finally seeing some light at the end of that path.

On a nice contraposition, while the importance of the relationship grows book after book, the paranormal side of the story loses its own; that is not necessarily a bad thing, at least not to my own perspective: as I told above, in the first book I had my difficulties to “find” the love in the story, while now, in Twilight, it’s clear from beginning to the end, clear that we are reading about a love story, and as any other love story, the two men involved will probably have their trouble, but at least we know they are fighting for it, together.

I like that the author didn’t underestimate the problem Bo is having in admitting his homosexuality; true, he has no problem with Sam, but he is still scared to come out with anyone else. A simple explanation can be that he is scared to be judged, but I think that, unconsciously, he is still uncertain of himself. In most cases, situations like this one will lead to the man to stay in the closet since the lover of the moment will not have the patience to wait; Sam instead is willing to go to a slower pace to allow to Bo all the space and time he needs. This translates not only on not having public display of affection, but also to limit their sexual experience, to not “scare” Bo off of some possible positions… and I will not detail further the concept.

On the contrary of other books in series that can be easily read as standalone, I would advice people to read this series in its releasing order, otherwise you will not grasp how the author has planned Sam and Bo’s love relationship’s evolution.

In the third book in the series about Sam and the BCPI the group is hosting a amateur ghost-hunt expedition when they are interrupted by a request to investigate another dimensional portal at a mountain resort. Unable to turn the offer down, but unable to completely abandon the project - the group splits up. Sam, Dean and Bo head to the mountain resort to investigate the portal while the rest of the gang stays put. In their stay at the mountain resort Sam and Bo come to some realizations about their relationship and Dean puts his mouth where he shouldn't have. Among dimensional monsters and homophobia the three men struggle to find out some truths...

This time I didn't like the story as much, it was a bit less exciting that in the previous books and the ending felt just a bit anticlimactic. The main focus feels to be about Sam and Bo, and even though that has been the case in the previous books too it feels super obvious this time. This time I felt like I could have set my clock after when the next sex scene would come, they were strewn in a very close and regular pattern over the pages...fine by me but it would have been nice to be surprised every once in a while!

This book was a nice interlude but I do hope the nex book gets back on track so to speak.

The focus of this book was a little off from the mystery. It was mostly about the relationship between the two main characters with the mystery only there to amplify it. Again, like the first book the mystery doesn't feel resolved and overall it was a little boring and easy to figure out the big picture. And the focus was barely on anything supernatural. But I like the people, even if I missed the balance the full team provides.

Oh and did anyone else find it oddly distracting every time Sam and Dean were alone together. It pulled me right out of the story because I'm a Supernatural fan and and ever since the last book every time they are together it feels like Supernatural slash fic.

On to the next one...

So they go up a mountain, there are sexy times, Bo is closeted, Sam is okay with that except when he's not, there's an inter-dimensional portal, a couple of deaths, and a homophobe who gay-bashes (actually, slashes) Sam. Oh and Dean is sexy and slutty and just happens to know everything necessary to make up for the fact that Bo and Sam are kinda useless in the wilderness (and in general). Why read it?

Angst and sex and angsty sex and sexy angst. They run around a mountain top smelling like man sweat and man sex. Oh, and there's some actual over-arching plot advancement in the arena of Sam's psychokenesis (though they may not start calling it that until the next book). All in all, it's a far better read than any book named Twilight has any right to be.

Absolutely terrific. Not a let down. Their out finally - Bo and Sam! But I hate it for Dean whose jazzy snapped personality has me going. Not being homophobic as many people are, I have no issues with this book. I love the series. Having been cast as a lesbian, because of my short hair, lack of affinity to using make up all the time, and the preference of men's jeans!!, this makes me gay. Lol. Married 30 yrs and straight but flattered when an attractive woman compliments me or gives me her number. Lol. I so understand the prejudice Sam, Bo and Dean experience and I hate it. That's why I think the way this author writes makes people see that it doesn't make a difference as long as you love someone and they love you back. If you're not into heavy sexual scenes, this is not for you.

This was one of the least favorite books that I have read in this story. But it also formed one of the most important books in the future of the series specially the next one. I did like the inclusion of Dean Delapore in this book too but again, I didn't like that he wasn't as important person as I would have liked him to be. I strongly feel that a good side character does deserve enough role in the book or have his own book. The paranormal element was also weak in this book but again made a base for the next book. One of the most important development here was Bo's courage in face of all the public and homophobia.

I do like the team from Bay City Paranormal Investigations This one starts with them leading some ghost fans on an investigation of an old Inn. They are called to go investigate yet another potential dimensional gateway at a remote mountain lodge. The team splits up with Sam, Bo and Dean going to the Lodge. I am starting to really like Dean.

This one is a little bit different with the boys dealing with Homophobia as well as the paranormal. Bo and Sam's relationship is still developing. I don't want to give too much of the story away so I will just say I am looking forward to reading the next book.

Though not as griping as the first book. This story really is more about the relationship between Sam and Bo. With the closeness the two share on this trip the relationship seems to get a serious boost. I thought the whole paranormal aspect was not real strong in this one. It feels more like a book that is filling in some important details for more in the series. The writing is well structured and descriptive. I loved the setting. The author did a wonderful job in creating the feel of the setting in the story line. You could almost picture yourself there.

Having loved Oleander House, I was disappointed with this book. I found it uninspiring and pedestrian when compared with the first (and second) in the series. I like the characters of Sam and Bo and their relationship, but this seemed to be the only growth in the book, not enough to carry this length of story.

The 'adventure' plot of the book started on one level and continued on that level throughout. I did not get much tension from the scenario that was laid in front of me and the repetition of the visits to the incident site just started to bore me.

Sadly, I was expecting more.

There's a lot less plot and a lot more on Sam and Bo's budding relationship. Not as an exciting read as the previous two books but not altogether bad if your a reader more focused on the MC's building relationship.

It did seem a bit odd to me that the thought of interdimensional portals existing didn't cause any kind of ruckus among people in the world and it was just accepted with a bit of skepticism. When it was brought up by a patron of the BCPI or an law official in the book they just seemed really casual and calm about it.

Not as good. There was very little investigating or paranormal action in the story. I hate to say it but I actually like Dean a lot more than Bo. Although I am glad that he's finally made up his mind. I anxiously await the fourth book so I can see if he'd actually staying with that decision after going home and being confronted by his soon to be ex-wife and sons. for Sam's sake I hope he does, poor guy is reall getting a raw deal.

3rd in the Bay City Paranormal Investigations series and I have to say, the weakest so far. The creepy factor went down and also the mystery wasn't as gripping. To me it felt like the whole thing just sizzled out, no peak anywhere. Though at least we got an explanation for the existence of the interdimensional gates and that's a plus, I guess.

So far this is my least favorite of this series. The first two books had more paranormal suspense than this one. It never got really gripping. The relationship development between Sam and Bo was very good in this instalment though. I still enjoyed reading it and I already started the fourth book.

Another great installment of this series.

This one wasn't as centred on the paranormal as the previous ones. Not that there wasn't anything going on, because there was, but it wasn't the total focus of the book. No this one was more about the growing relationship between Bo and Sam.

As always, smoking hot sex, great MC's and beautiful surroundings...what more do you want?

Very good paranormal m/m romance in which Sam, Bo, and Dean investigate a possible interdimensional portal at a primitive and remote mountain resort. If Bo's paranoia has put you off the previous two books, this is the book where that changes for the better.

I really want to like these books more than I do. I'm having a heck of a time connecting to Sam and Bo for some reason! The mystery was also a bit ho-hum for me in this one. Great writing and the setting was amazing.
