The 1% is simply amazing and is the best consulting preparation guide that I have found. Having been preparing for my consulting interviews for a while, I wasn’t expecting this book to teach me much, but was I wrong!

1. The book is probably the most comprehensive guide on the topic of consulting interviews out there. Having read Case in Point and Case Interview Secrets, I was pleasantly surprised by how the book covers the process end-to-end, including fit, mindset, how candidates are evaluated, and even interview wardrobe. These are areas which are mostly neglected by the current literature on consulting interviews.

2. The 1% also offers incredible depth. Given the breadth of topics covered, one would expect the advice to be quite superficial, but it was the complete opposite! Florian’s vast experience in case interview coaching really shines through here as the content was both very nuanced and different from the outdated approaches taught by the common case books.

3. Despite the sheer amount of content contained within the book, I never once found it a slog to get through. Everything was presented in a clear, easy-to-read, and (most importantly) digestible way.

If you are preparing for consulting interviews, this should be your go-to book. I can honestly say that nothing out there even comes close to this. I have already recommended to this several friends, and am glad I am interviewing soon, because this book is going to raise the level of competition!

A Highly Practical Treasure Trove of Knowledge

The sheer amount of information, practical tips and techniques were extremely helpful when I re-tackled some of the cases I had done in the past. The behavioral interview approaches caught my interest the most. They allowed me to fine tune some of my stories and even come up with new answers to better reflect what they are actually asking. Many great insights into how interviewers think and evaluate you and your performance are packed into this book!

I can imagine this book is very helpful to prep for the consulting job at your dream employer. It gives you a structured schedule to prepare ahead of time. Especially if you don’t have family members or peers around you in the industry that can give you guidance, this book will give you some helpful insight on how to structure your prep time meaningfully.

Would not recommend if you are looking for a student job (prep time > output) and for any area outside of management consulting. The book also does not come with case studies.

Read this book mainly out of curiosity about consulting and its interview process, so I won’t give it a rating. It’s written with a clear structure and a treasure trove of information, covering aspects ranging from the specifics of the case interview to practical details like interview attire and mindset. Even if you’re not set on entering the field of consulting, there’s a lot of insight that this book provides in terms of interview prep and the perspective that interviewers have on applicants.

Expectations pleasantly exceeded

I presumed this book would be another book about the basics of case interviews, in a very beginner-style tone, etc.. However, I was pleasantly taken aback by the breadth of content and applicable tips included. As a senior consultant who is about to switch from Big 4 to an MBB firm, this book taught me things in a new way, even things I have not considered or learned so far.
