Rate this book

Caillou has way too many toys. Actually this book is why I hated the TV series so much - the parents need to just start parenting. Seriously.

First of all, the suggestion is thrown out there that Caillou give away some of his toys. When I first heard that, I thought, 'YES! Caillou gains some generousity!" But his reaction of giving ONE toy to Rosie sucks. With his parents praising him for that and suggesting making a toy box for additional toy storage for the rest. Argh.

But then that whole scene in the bathroom with a rubber duck floating in the toilet and the Dad just laughing...ARGH! When I saw that and realized my darling toddlers might then think it's funny to put toys in the toilet (and gosh knows, maybe FLUSH) then the TV show lost it's cute entirely. I'd been there, done that on flushed toys. Not funny in the least.

So why am I reading Caillou? Somehow this wound up on my reading list, who knows why. But this book...better off without it.

Yes, I have Caillou issues.

Just judging the book by it's own merit not the show.
The book could have worked but there are so many smaller problems the laziness it got to me. You know it's problematic when you actually is a bit of an identity crises at the end of your book.

Cover
You know a book is lazy when not only the front cover is interior but so is back cover and title page. I find it funny that they actually used this image and not the one on on the first page. Which I think would have been far more endearing. I'll get to that in illustrations analyses.

Interior
Story
The story is is overall alright but the end is a disaster. It doesn't know what it wants to be. The second last page makes a decision to go with giving away some of his toys. A decent and noble idea. I have to admit I was shocked to turn the page to see they abandon ship as soon as it's suggested because building a toy chest was a better idea. OH! Sorry he unwillingly gave 1 toy to his sister! Are you kidding me?
Wouldn't it have been better to already have the chest and donation was so everything fit in the chest? Unfortunately nothing is gained by the end of the book.
It's weird they gave more attention to a duck in the toilet than giving to others or to his sister. Because toilet humor?

Illustration
The biggest issue has to be the illustrations. Out of 11 illustrations of Caillou only 4 images actually have him smiling. This cover image is him pouting.
Your main character everyone! Covering his mouth to show his pouting disappointment on the cover.

Another weird detail. Why have the yellow streak on the bottom of the cover when it's on the top of every page? Seems like an unusual design choice to have a part border.
The illustrations are bright! Bright as in Primary and barely secondary. What's with hanging on identical colors for everything like it's colored by Microsoft Paint?
Honestly the chair is extremely hard to see when Daddy is sitting giving the illusion he's standing in the image.

This is a good book in the "Caillou" series about picking up. It's a good way to show how parents will delay rewards until chores are done. Our girls enjoyed watching the story on the Tumblebooks website. (tumblebooks.com)
