A month after she’s traded to Ash Augustine, the half-demon leader of the Decagon, Blaise is finally starting to settle into her new life. She has her own job, her own space, and a birthday fast approaching. It’s almost enough to forget she works for the leader of an international crime syndicate. But even that’s seeming less and less daunting as her trust in Ash grows, and with it her powerful new feelings for him.
Ash thought he had everything under control— he landed a seat at the head of the Decagon, launched his family business to new levels of success, and gained an unexpected empath assistant along the way. But the façade begins to slip when he realizes he may have more enemies than friends at the table, and danger approaches them at every turn. Through the whirlwind of fashion shows and syndicate meetings, Blaise Aoide exists as a refreshing constant, and even as he battles his demon half to maintain composure, he worries he won’t have the strength to stay away from her for long.
Lines are blurred when dealing with the damned, and Blaise seems determined to step all over them.

Wow! I really enjoyed book one, His Unexpected, and this second book just seemed elevated. I absolutely LOVED seeing more of Ash's demon side - even getting a chapter in his POV and talking to Blaise in a dream! Ash seemed way more intense and it just made everything so delicious. The concert scene with him and Blaise was absolutely electric and the tension between them just kept building and building. I screamed anytime Ash would try and take a step back. I know he wants to make sure it's what Blaise really wants, but he's getting in his own way. Everything was leading up to that moment on that boat and they're still not really all the way there. It just makes me anticipate book three all the more.
I also really enjoyed the POV's branching out beyond just Blaise and Ash (and his demon). I enjoyed Mandy in book one, that she seemed like a typical mean girl, but turned into a good and true friend for Blaise. I raised my eyebrows at one of her revelations that I would be interested to see if it turns into anything. And Allison! I guess I was a dummy and didn't remember that Ash has a sister. It was great to be introduced to her and discover her power.
Overall, this was darker and more intense than book one, and it's setting up the foundations of an explosive ending in book three. I can't wait!
Had to reread the first book to remember what happened in this one, since I left a 6 month gap in between, and upon reading them side by side, it seems to me that the plot doesn’t feel complete, and that this is one of many fantasy novels I’ve read that are published as trilogies and should’ve been one longer complete work.
The steaminess is not really as strong as promised, and most of the story is about the MMC’s internal struggles to square the circle of his relationship with the FMC and discomfort with the power imbalance and horrible optics. With everyone else around them giving horrible advice along the lines of “it’s fine, just go for it”, which reminds me of that horrible S.P.E.W. plot in Harry Potter where there was literally one person with a working moral compass and the world around her was just like “meh, oppression is fine lol you’re dumb”.
I will note that this book is much better proofread than most of the others in the genre; I normally find 4-5 typos in a book this length, but I found zero in book 1 (even after having read it twice) and only one mistake in book 2 (a “complimentary” that should be “complementary”).
While there are still some things about the story that just aren't for me, I have to say that going in with altered expectations to the sequel really helped.
Knowing what the balance of romance to paranormal aspects was going to be helped get me in the mindset for something lighter and steamier.
This second entry into the series is presented in the same engaging, fast-paced style, but I do think I liked it better than the first. The setting and characters both felt more realized and natural.
One thing I really appreciated was that the characters felt like they had more time to explore their emotions. A lot of this had to do with the fact that there were more sexy scenes in this book, but that is a valid way to explore characters -- especially in the genre.
I loved Elizabeth's writing style, which only feels stronger in this entry of the series.
I started reading this morning and figured I'd read a bit here and there between getting stuff done. That didn't happen. Once I started reading, I didn't want to put it down. Bailey comes out swinging as the heat between the main characters ramps up from the very beginning. The stakes get a little higher as we see more of the criminal organization and its players.
The other POVs were fun and added another layer to the story. Though, as soon as I saw Mandy's POV, my poly side awakened, and I am begging for the throuple. The steam was exceptional but I was screeching when they got interrupted in the end. Next year can't come fast enough and I can't wait to read the conclusion of this trilogy!
OMG! This book was amazing I love how the chapters were a tad longer then the first book and we got to spend more time with Ash and Blaise and getting a deeper dive of their powers.
Blaise confidence in the book was amazing I loved her she stood her ground. I’m so glad she has kind of gotten the hang of her power and feeling more confident with it.
I would just like to say I love Mandy I would want her as a best friend.
I liked getting some of the others pov it added a fun twist on the book.
I can’t not wait for the 3 book my excitement is through the roof.
Loved this book even more than the first. This book is everything the first book had but turned up to the next level. I don’t want to spoil anything but I really like Blaise and Ash as characters and their dynamic is a refreshing change of pass from what I am used to.
Absolutely loved this entry in the series. Ash and Blaise’s further deepening relationship is amazing. Bailey really flexes writing these characters and I really can’t wait for more.
