“The Secrets We Keep” by Nikki Lee Taylor was a heart-wrenching story about how secrets can destroy!

Sophie has been self-isolating in her house for the past five year’s morning the loss of her husband James and her son Josh. The few pleasures she embraces is her rescue dog Miss Molly, her at-home editing job and her handsome and caring boss, Bastian. The attraction she feels towards Bastian is mutual and satisfying, and even though he is married, she feels safe knowing he is there.

Blogger, Madelyn-May has the perfect life with a successful husband, perfect twins and thousands of followers. Her life wasn’t always perfect though – far from it. And, now someone is sending her taunting emails. The senders name is unfamiliar and the emails have a sinister feel to them concerning her past. She needs to find out who it is before her life comes crashing down and destroys everything she has worked so hard to create. You see, Madelyn-May has several secrets about her past and the last person she wants to know is her husband. Oh, and then there’s her followers, too!

These two women are connected by an agreement made in the past. Secrets kept from those they love because of immediate personal needs at the time. For one woman the secret is kept by deep, devoted love, for the other woman it is kept out of deception and intentional greed.

I enjoyed how the author wove the paths of these two women together, merging what felt like completely separate stories into a common end. Sophie and Madelyn-May were fully and thoroughly developed characters and this gave substance to the foundation of the story.

What seems to be missing is the development of other characters mentioned in this book. I wanted more depth built-in by the author about Sophie’s husband & son and Madelyn-Mays mother & sisters. What was offered was superficial and now I have questions about them that can’t be answered. I also question the necessity of the topic of the specific child abuse in this book. It just didn’t seem necessary to the story-line!

Trigger Warning: Child abuse; Sexual abuse

I am in two minds with this review as I started reading the book as the cover drew me in and the premise sounded great and reminded me of the book Disclaimer by Renee Knight when a manuscript that mirrors truth and a dark secret comes to light and the spiraling rabbit hole of the mystery and thrill that comes with separating the manuscript and the reality of the truth. However, as I got reading it, I found myself struggling a bit as the book for me was a bit too slow-paced as I love to have my books fast-paced otherwise I read it and I find my mind wandering and myself getting distracted and losing interest in the story which is what happened with me as I struggled to read the remainder of this story. I also found the characters hard to connect with as we had Sophie whose husband and child in an accident but she seemed intent on wallowing but not and she felt too pity-party for my liking and then her boss Madelyn-May just rubbed me up the wrong way and reminded me of Meryl Streep's character in the Devil Wears Prada and it's like Hello, you are the boss of a freaking parenting blog yet you are a stuck-up cow. Overall, though this book does touch on some edgy topics like child abuse etc and to those who find this area triggering will find The Secrets we Keep a heartwrenching read and how sometimes secrets can destroy someone's life in a single heartbeat and it does make you reflect and wonder whether is the truth always the best option? This book is also a borderline 3P's read for me.

a favorite book of 2021. the beginning was tough to get through with the car phobia and child abuse. I thought I wouldn't be able to finish but then things started connecting and the suspense just kept pushing me to read faster. the ending was not what I was expecting AT ALL!!

Great story involving mystery, abuse, loss and love. The loss of a child is something no mother should have to face. This story revolves around 3 main characters whose lies are about to surface and bite them in the ass. My favorite saying is no good deed goes unpunished and this doesn't disappointment me. I received this e-book free for an honest review and am always happy when I get to award one 5 stars. I look forward to reading more from Ms Nikki Lee Taylor.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved the book. I read it in less than 24 hours. The author writes beautifully and kept me entertained for a good amount of time. There are some typos still in there, so it would be wise to proofread the manuscript again.

Aside from that, the book was entertaining (some things predictable) and I would love to read what happens with Sophie, Bastian & Madelyn-May, and the kids. Another thing I would like the author to work on is their features: describe the people I'm reading about and supposed to connect to. I only read the words 'beautiful,' but that's pretty relative, isn't it?

I'd love to elaborate more on what I liked and disliked... but I can't.

First off, as the name suggests, this book deals with the secrets people hold and how they damage or disrupt each other's lives. I don't want to tell anything else about the story - I don't want to spoil the story for anybody. This is one book, one has to read themselves, to immerse in the visceral world created by Ms.Taylor with the pages.

As the author herself mentions in beginning of the book, the book contains instances of child abuse. So, I would also like to add a trigger alert. Though it is not too explicit or visceral, don't read the book if you can't put yourself through reading something this upsetting.

Coming to the way the author presented the story, it was racy and gut-wrenching at the same time. You will keep feeling wanting to squirm during almost 75% of the story. And though you will want to, you can't choose the one person with whom your sympathies lies completely. Each main character in the story will make you feel averse to them and sympathize with them at the same time. Also, the author deals brilliantly with the complexities of relations in between the people of a abusive household.

All these combine together and form a racy, compelling thriller which also weighs heavily on your heart. Can't wait to read more from this author.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but was drawn in to both the cover and the blurb and the idea that secrets will always find a way out in the end!

This is a total page turner. Told from the perspective of the different main characters and flitting between the present day and events of the past, the reader is immediately drawn into their lives and the intrigue that builds up as more is revealed.

The action really kicks in about 2/3 of the way into the story as several worlds collide and I admit to gasping aloud in several places as the lives of the characters suddenly become intertwined.

There is plenty of drama throughout and, without giving away too much of the plot, there are some chapters describing Madelyn-May and Melody's childhood which some readers will find challenging to read, but equally they are integral to the plot.

If you're looking for a fast-paced thriller that keeps you turning the page to find out what happens next, you won't want to miss this one!

With thanks to the author and BookSirens for the opportunity to read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book... Wow! Talk about an intense thrill ride. This is one book that will stick with you once you've finished it.
The story follows two main characters, and one other character, who each have their own awful pasts. One character's past is a bit more traumatic, though, and readers will want to proceed with caution because it does touch on the subject of rape of a child.
There's Sophie, a woman grieving the loss of her husband and young son in a car accident. Then there's Madelyn-May, a mommy blogger who seems to have the perfect life. Both women have secrets, though, and when these secrets come to light and infect their present, that's when things get crazy.
This is one of those books that immediately sinks its claws into you and doesn't let go. And, let me tell you, you'll feel both breathless and scarred after you read the last page. It's a very dark book at times, and there were a few moments where I had to set my Kindle down and walk away because it got to be too much. But I immediately came right back to it and had this finished within a day. That's how good it was.
I did find Madelyn-May a bit frustrating throughout a lot of this book. And her husband... I get it, but still. Ugh. He was such a good guy, for the most part, but I kinda got annoyed him too. Sophie, on the other hand, was relatively normal. She had her moments, and she wasn't all innocent, but she wasn't as irritating.
If you're looking for a fast-paced psychological thriller that will keep you on your toes, definitely check out The Secrets We Keep.

To say I was captivated by this story is an understatement. Usually I have issues staying connected when a story jumps timelines and characters however this author mastered this superbly. I was totally immersed in the story. It was thought provoking on legal, moral and parental issues. The story flowed well and the twists gave you “what the?” moments. My only complaint is that the book ended. I could have been captivated by the story for much longer. A great read!!!!

I couldn't put it down. I loved the way Ms. Taylor gives the reader background on each of the characters as she carries us to the exciting climax. Even in the epilogue, we get the impression that there will be another Secrets book. This is my first time reading anything from this author but it certainly won't be the last. I Got The Secrets We Keep, by Nikki Lee Taylor From Book Sirens for a fair and honest review.

Trigger Warnings For

Abuse and Violence

I decided to read The Secrets We Keep after seeing the cover which drew my attention to it and when i saw the Synopsis the book drew me in further.

Crippled with anxiety, Sophie is desperate to overcome the pain of losing her husband and only child in a freak car accident. Living and working in isolation with only the company of her dog Miss Molly, Sophie agrees to take on a job reviewing the manuscript of an up-and-coming writer.

But this isn’t any story. It is one that unearths old secrets and to discover the truth, Sophie must find the courage to embark on a search that will change her life forever.

On the outside, Love Mommy blogging queen Madelyn-May has it all. To her online community she is the perfect mother. She has a successful husband, perfect twins, and an idyllic life.

What they don’t know is Madelyn-May also has a secret. When her past collides with the present, Madelyn-May is forced to make a choice that could destroy everything she loves.

Would you risk destroying a family, if it meant healing your own heart? Would you tell the truth, if it meant losing everything you love?

The Secrets We Keep is a confronting look at the complexities of family and lengths a mother will go to for her child.

The Secrets We Keep, at times was very difficult to read, due to the three chapters which had child abuse at there heart, but those chapters were written, with sensitivity and were an integral part of the story.

The story was told over a number of different perspectives and time periods, which at the start was difficult to work out, which person or what timeline you were on,

However as the changes only happened at the start of the chapter, as a reader you know when the changes happen. In addition to this as a reader I got used to the character timeline change and the problem became less.

As I said earlier in the review the book had chapters which centered on child abuse, there were also chapter based around anxity and depression due to grief, this was also wrriten with care.

Who Should Read The Secrets we keep? This book deals with a number of difficult issues, which are trigger warnings for people, however.if you are able to get past them then this thriller with dark chapters, becomes an interesting thriller with twist throughout.

This makes The Secrets We Keep By Nikki Lee Taylor, an interesting thriller to read, for everyone who enjoys a thriller..

Thanks NetGalley, BooksGoSocial and Nikki Lee Taylor for a copy to review.
A heart breaking intense story about motherhood, loss, grief, love, sacrifices, hope and second chances.
This is not a book you easily read or forget about, it's incredibly hard sometimes to go through some parts of it...the unimaginable pain of Sophie's loss and her crippling grief...the unthinkable horrors the sisters endured in that trailer not only by their criminal of a father but mostly by their indifferent mother who allowed it all.
I loved the writing style, the originality of the storyline and the characters building, I mean there wasn't stereotyping regarding the cheating husband, the evil mistress and the wife who must deserve it all..no, the characters came out as human as possible with their weaknesses, flaws, instincts and natural behavior.
The book didn't fall into a very clichéd ending that would have been easily acceptable considering how the seemingly unconnected characters paths crossed gravely.
The book's ending gives the reader couple of lines to think about, imagining how the characters will go on, is it really how their stories end?

I love a slow build up story with all the bits of clues to lead up to the finale at the end.
The secrets we keep gave me that. I was clueless at the begining of the book. As I read on.. everything started to connect.

The author was able to create a traumatized Madeley-May. I could feel her pain and her past that was troubling her. She was lost and she couldn't function because of what had happened to her.
She was a survivor but she suffered from PTSD so she couldn't have a loving relationship with her husband and children.

“What I mean, is the truth can be very powerful. It can set you free or put you in a cage,”

Beautiful words.. Sometimes we lie just to protect whom we love.

This novel had quite a few twists and turns -- so many that it strains credibility -- but the twists are so juicy that I couldn't stop reading. The book touches on so many sources of pain -- addressing each with intelligence, empathy, and humanity. The author builds strength into each of her characters and helps us see different sides to them -- what are their motivations? However, the book never becomes preachy -- the whole way through, and especially at the end, it is a true thriller in women's fiction. Bastian is a kind character, and serves as a great sounding board, but this book really is about two women and their respective children. Parts are hard to read through, but it is a solid book and worth the exploration. The novel starts out with what seems like two people wholly unrelated and living separate lives but their paths converge in ways that are delicious for the reader. I want to read more from this author. Recommended reading!

THE SECRETS WE KEEP, follow us wherever we go.
Held closely deep inside, just waiting to explode.

Sometimes will cross path, with another causing distraction.
Or perhaps even worse, complete devastation totally unwarranted.

With great sadness endure, closing doors locking in.
Someone knocking at door, can you hear it?

Safe to open up, dare to let in?
And indeed if do, impact bad or good?

Walk through this story, lives of these women.
Get to know them, understand fears and motivation.

Do we have secrets, holding us captive too?
If that's the case, know what to do?

I enjoyed this suspenseful thriller. This is a new author for me and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. This is a well rounded story that has twists and turns that left me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what will happen next. The characters are relateable and engaging. They made the story feel realistic and really made the story for me. What will happen when one photo could change life forever for these characters? I highly recommend this book.

Overall I found this book quite a satisfying read !! Author has done some excellent research to develop the characters in this novel !

Sophie although terribly wrapped in her sorrow & anxiety after the loss of her husband and young son and struggling to move forward ... shows an inner strength that does come to life in the final passages .

Madelyn-May is the most complex character and very hard to like . She has lived an entire life as somebody she wants to be rather then herself ! ( I am guessing a form of protection from her childhood traumas !) She had love to give ..

Bastian although with his own little secret still sticks it out with his wife “ for the sake of his children “.. too handsome too perfect !!

Lacy is the least likeable character of all ! No mother turns a blind eye to the happenings in their home re child abuse of three little girls .. do they ????

I thought the author did tie all the characters and plot together perfectly at the end with a fast paced finale and a great last few chapters . Lots of twists and turns

Hard to carry so many secrets thru ones life .. hard to hide the truth ( even if some circumstances are a little unbelievable)

A great first book

As an afterthought.. excellent cover !

This book grabbed my attention from the get go and kept me guessing. I knew from the synopsis that the characters were all interconnected but I didn't correctly guess how they all fit together. Not a lot of books are able to surprise me like this one did. I really disliked Madelyn-May and honestly she was never redeemed in my eyes. Sophie had my heart. Her story was heartbreaking and I was rooting for her to the end. This is a thriller so a nice pretty bow is not what you will get. Enough questions were answered to satisfy my curiosity but the way it ended kept me thinking about this book long after I was done. 5 stars this book does not disappoint.
