Rate this book
Jess O'Brien has overcome a lot: the challenges of attention deficit disorder, the near bankruptcy of her beloved Inn at Eagle Point and her self-perception as a screwup in a family of overachievers. Now she's ready to share the future with a man. Her friends persuade her to join a dating service—but she gets no takers! Which is fine with her childhood friend, psychologist Will Lincoln, who's already chosen the perfect man for Jess: himself.

Will has loved Jess practically forever. He knows her faults and her strengths. But for all Will's sincerity and charm, Jess fears he views her as some psychological case study. With her family and the town of Chesapeake Shores behind him, Will finally makes his case. But is it enough to convince Jess to take the risk of a lifetime?

Sherryl Woods

With two other careers to her credit before becoming a novelist and four states in which she's lived for extended periods of time, Sherryl Woods has collected friends and memories, along with way too much unnecessary junk.

"The friends are the only things I've brought with me through the years that really matter," she says. "I could probably live without one more chintz teacup, another tin-litho sandpail or another snowglobe, but I need those friends."

The theme of enduring friendships and families is always central to Sherryl's books, including her latest Chesapeake Shores series — THE INN AT EAGLE POINT, FLOWERS ON MAIN and HARBOR LIGHTS.

Author of more than 100 romance and mystery novels, Sherryl Woods grew up in Virginia. Over the years she had lived in Ohio and Florida, as well as California. Currently she divides her time between Key Biscayne, Florida and Colonial Beach, Virginia, the small, river-front town where she spent her childhood summers.

A graduate of Ohio State University School of Journalism, Sherryl spent more than ten years as a journalist, most of them as a television critic for newspapers in Ohio and Florida. For several years she also coordinated a motivational program for the more than 8,000 employees at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Medical Center.

Her first book, RESTORING LOVE, was published in 1982 by Dell Candlelight Ecstasy under the pseudonym of Suzanne Sherrill. Her second book, SAND CASTLES, under the pseudonym of Alexandra Kirk, was published later that same year by Bantam. She began using her own name when she moved to the Second Chance at Love line at Berkley Publishing. In 1986, she began writing full-time and also began her long career at Silhouette Books with the Desire title NOT AT EIGHT, DARLING, set in the world of television which she covered for so many years.

In addition to her more than 75 romances for Silhouette Desire and Special Edition, she has written thirteen mysteries — nine in the Amanda Roberts series and four in the Molly DeWitt series.

When she's not writing or reading, Sherryl loves to garden, though she's not at her best on a riding lawn mower. She also loves tennis, theater, and ballet, even though her top spin has long since vanished, she's never set foot on a stage, and she's way too uncoordinated to dance. She also loves baseball and claims anyone who's ever seen Kevin Costner in "Bull Durham" can understand why.

Something about this one bugged me and I think it is the content about ADHD. If she has a mild case, why is it so life defining? My son has ADHD and not a mild case but I can't see a world where he (or anyone else) is so focused on it that it alters their perceptions and experiences so much. It felt like Sherryl Woods was trying to highlight living with a disorder but it felt overwrought to me. Perhaps if she'd chosen a different illness like major depression or schizophrenia? I don't know but I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much as the previous novels in the series.

Jess O'Brien works very hard to keep her Inn at Eagle Point afloat. She feels that she has something to prove to her family of overachievers. The O'Brien clan is a large family where everyone knows everything about each other and they don't mind handing out advise. She also has some emotional issues leftover from her childhood when her mom left the family. She is loved but this desertion has left her scarred and add to all that, she has Attention Deficient Disorder (ADD).
When her childhood friend, Will Lincoln, shows interest in her, she doesn't think that he could care for her as a love interest. Will is a psychologist and she thinks that his only interest in her could be as a case study. That couldn't be farther from the truth. Will has cared for Jess since they were kids but he has a battle ahead to win her over.
Theirs is a sweet story.

I knew after reading Laila and whatever his name was story and hating it that I should of left any Sherryl Woods books alone. To be honest I didn't even finish this book. I find her main female characters immature and childish when they like someone. In what world do two people who like each other and are available and single play every game to stay away from one another? I find it ridiculous that you never know what the characters look like. That's usually how I attach to a book is by setting up these characters in my head, making up two people and then the story is easier to follow. I counted Will the "hero" of the story expressing his interest in Jess at least 5 times in a mature adult like fashion and each time she acted like a 15year old. How does someone who owns their own business, has a strong supportive family and lives in a dream community that emotionally retarded? That's why these book are STUPID! I'm done forever with Sherryl Woods, she is a terrible terrible terrrible writer. Please someone steal her computer or pay her to stop writing. I've never disliked an author as much as this one. Horrible!

This book annoyed me so much. Who cares if she has ADD? Why does it have to be such a defining factor in her life and an excuse for everything?!

Honestly, I don't know why I keep punishing myself with this series. I loved LOVED!!! the Cedar Cove series but this one just keeps annoying me. I am pretty sure I couldn't like Jess less than I do. If I read ADD one more time, I was probably going to throw my ereader out the window. I very quickly skimmed the last 30 pages just to get it over with and yet sadly, I will probably keep reading the series, but I'll be finding the books as cheaply as possible, that's for sure.

two romances in one! I honestly HATED the premise for Jess and Will - I hated that everyone kept phrasing her lack of boyfriends as “no social life” — she has lots of friends lots of family and is running a busy thriving business…seems like a wonderful social life to me…ok off my soap box LOL.
(also didn’t like the Will character)

LOVED the Connie and Thomas storyline though, wish that was the main romance!

Disappointed by Jess. She was immature and annoying. Did not like the couple Will - Jess.

"Moonlight Cove" is the second book in the new Chesapeake Shores Trilogy. I really liked this story. The story of Jess O'Brien and Will. Jess owns and runs the Inn at Eagle Point in Chesapeake Shores. Will, a psychologist, is a long-time friend of her brothers, Kevin and Connor. Jess is dealing with a lot of issues left over from her childhood. Her mother separated from her father when Jess was 7 and left all the kids with the Dad, the Dad was a workaholic and was not around much, although the grandmother stepped in and raised the kids. Because of this, Jess has abandonment issues. Add to this the fact that Jess has attention deficit disorder and her whole family treats her as a "screw-up" because she tends to be unfocused and thus forgets a lot of things because of the ADD. This leads to a lot of misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Because of all her "issues", Jess feels that Will, although they are friends, likes to analyse her and that puts a crimp in their relationship. As if all this isn't enough, her whole family likes to meddle in each others relationships which only adds to the humor in the storyline. But, Will has been in love with Jess since he was 14 and he is not going to give up easily. Their story provides an enjoyable read. Also, there is a back burner love story between Jess's Uncle Thomas and Connie and some set-up to the third book in the trilogy which will be Mack and Suzie's story. I always enjoy Ms. Woods' series because they are like one long continuing story, constantly going back and picking up the threads from the previous stories.

Not my favorite in the series. I couldn't stand the constant harping on the ADD. If it was a mild case for Jess you could have fooled me. The way every little detail was so based on this one thing you would think it was a major case. I know people with ADD and honestly while it has it's affect on their lives it is so not to this extent. I enjoyed Jess in the previous books and was looking forward to her and Will together. I do think they make a good couple, but would have liked to see this one played out a little better and without contrived problems and the constant back and forth on decisions.

I had a hard time finishing this book. It was an audio book and a good part of the problem was the person reading it. I didn't care for her voice and didn't like her inflections. She put emphasis on strange parts of the sentence and did this continually throughout the whole book. However, the writing was the other bad part. There was far too much drama. Every character had some problem or something they were afraid of. It was too much. The main character had ADD and the author made this out to be a huge deal which was unnecessary. It just didn't come across as believable to me. I don't think I will be reading any of Sherryl Woods books in the future.

I must admit that Jess is a bit more likable in this one than she was in The Inn at Eagle Point. At least to me. One thing that made me scratch my head however, was her ADD. If she and other members of her family claim it's so mild that no medication or whatever is needed to treat it, why is it at other times they make it sound so debilitating that she practically can't function? Other than that, it's a pretty decent read.

The heroine’s (Jess) reluctance to date, then to consider a relationship with the hero (Will) drags on far too long. Her on-off feelings about the relationship might be understandable if she hadn’t know the hero since she was a child.

The characters are well-drawn and -developed, the hero more so than the heroine. There are two romances to enjoy, but the heroine’s reluctance to move out of her comfortable rut became annoying.

Overall, this is my least favorite book in the series so far.

I think part of my opinion on this book is tied to the audio narrator, but mostly it is due to the main character. Jess is a completely unlikeable whiny brat, behaving more like a 15 year old than a 30 year old. The plot line related to ADD is not at all believable. I’ve known quite a few folks with ADD, but never met a single adult who obsesses about it and uses it as a constant excuse for all the mistakes in their life.

I got REALLY tired of the main character blaming everything in her life on being diagnosed with ADD. I understand that it's not easy to cope with but she just needed to get over herself.

Rated 3.5 stars on platforms that acknowledge nuance

This is a series I reach for when I need something light and fluffy. Oh, there's conflict, but the mental demand and emotional commitment are low. And I like the continuity of dipping into and out of a series, especially the deeper I get. Add in a charming setting to which I enjoy regularly returning, and this seals the deal when I need a break from heavier reading.

What I liked about Moonlight Cove:
Told from a different perspective each time
- While we continue the march forward in time, nestled into the O'Brien family, the nested circles extend out further and further with each new installment. Each story is told from the primary perspective of one or two different characters each time, so even though you know them from previous encounters, they get their chance to develop as characters in the spotlight, and then continue to show up in each subsequent book. And even though they become more peripheral, their lives continue to develop in view of the reader, giving each book a comfortable familiarity.
Will - I wasn't sure I was going to like him all the much, and then I was surprised. He was a believable character, flawed but genuine, someone I would actually enjoy knowing.

What I didn't care for:
Jess isn't my favorite character
- It isn't her ADHD or her flightiness. It's the whining and the excuses and the general distrustfulness of people who have always been in her corner. It gets old halfway through the first book, and an entire book with the focus on Jess made it impossible to avoid.
Frequently felt repetitive - Without giving details away, there is a common pattern and refrain that is repeated throughout the book. In fact, even by the time the plot reaches its resolution, it's still somewhat present. I may have rolled my eyes more than a couple times.

Worth noting:
Possible dealbreakers
- The language is clean but there are several bedroom scenes, if that happens to be something you avoid.

Six books in, it's safe to say that I am invested in the O'Brien clan. I want to know how their stories will play out, how the family will grow and change. This isn't a life-altering read. It isn't high quality literature. But it is a gentle, satisfying series, with characters you can root for and to whom you do not mind returning when you're looking for a book that won't tax you to read.

Not my favorite book in the series. The author kept switching back and forth between Jess using her ADD as an excuse for everything she does and did in the past then switches to it not being a reason or excuse. Jess seems to be the most undeveloped character, at least of the main O’Brien family members. I still enjoyed it though, especially the beautiful winter setting. Connie and Thomas were actually my favorite couple in this book not Jess and Will. I look forward to catching up with the O’Briens soon!

***

The O'Brien saga continues. Easy listening to this, makes my ride to an from work more enjoyable. Not a big dramatic plot in this one. A fairly straightforward story of sister, Jess, and her growth as an adult, looking for love, both from a man and her family. She doesn't have to look far.

When I crack open a romance novel, I expect to read about the hero and heroine mainly, with the sometimes additional secondary characters. I do not expect to read about the Hero, Heroine and their co-workers, best friends, and family members. Sure those people are tossed in, but the book does not become about their lives in addition to the Hero and Heroine. In this book, I felt like I got everyone's story BUT the two people I got the book to read about!

I liked both Jess and Will and thought so much could have been done with their story. SO much. The first 100 pages and they barely had any contact at all save for a quick kiss that could have been a lot hotter than it was. And the sex scene - my God, such a letdown. I stared at the page thinking: This is it?

There was so much information about other people in this book that there was really no depth to any of them. It all felt so surface. I felt as though the author just really wanted to write about a bunch of people with no cohesive plot. Booorrring!

And the men who got together and chatted. I'm sorry, but no. No man I know has ever said "cozy" when describing a room. The three male best friends who got together talked more like women than men. Since when do men talk about their feelings with each other? It just did not feel real and natural to me.

I have about 70 pages left and I am only finishing it because I have to read it for a book club, not because I am incredibly invested in these characters. In fact, I will not be reading the other Sherryl Woods I got out of the library because of this book.
