Cheryl Erikson is a Vampire Hunter with a problem. A dangerous new drug named Plast has found its way onto the streets of Dallas. She would prefer to let the DEA and local law enforcement handle everything, but since the dealers also happen to be vampires, she has no choice but to step in and put a stop to it.

With the help of her best friend Virgil and a fellow Hunter named Tank, Cheryl must work to eradicate Plast from the streets of Dallas. It's a task that becomes more difficult as she comes under the gun, quite literally, from a contract out on her head. Coupled with a nosy police detective looking to peg her for a triple homicide, and a sudden interest in her activities from a powerful vampire recently arrived in the area, it's enough to force her to accept help from the least likely of sources, a mysterious Hunter named Rev. Through him, everything she thinks she knows, and everything she stands for, is challenged in ways she never imagined.

3.5 stars. Good, but very slow-moving read (not sure why)--at times reading was like pulling teeth. Story idea is interesting, and vampire mythology has some novel elements. I liked the spiritual aspects. Some things about Cheryl I didn't like that much, but overall she was a good heroine. The Rev character rocked (kind of made me think of another Rehv I know and love)! I liked how detailed the aspects of navigating the Dallas metroplex were (I knew a lot of the neighborhoods and streets).

Cheryl Erickson is a Hunter. In the shadowy underworld of Dallas, Texas, a world unbeknown to most humans Cheryl hunts and dispatches both Demons and Vampires. She has gained a reputation and has many friends in the business, and her territorial clear rate is one of the highest. Unlike many of the Hunters she does not have a day job, having inherited a very lucrative business when her Father died. It is run by others and leaves her the time necessary for her task. She shares her home with Virgil her best friend, an amazing geek with technical savvy that helps her to stay out of harms way.

While she deals strictly with Demons and Vampires she has found that there is a new drug, Plast that is making its way on the scene. This is something she would normally leave for the DEA, but it has fallen into her territory and seems to be handled and distributed by Vampires or their feeders.

As she sleeps off her recent nights work, she receives a call from her mentor known only as Cho, one of the best trainers in the business. He needs to speak to her and is on his way over. As she answers the door the lifeless husk of Cho, is thrown aside and a Demon attacks her, nearly getting the job done.

As Cheryl tries to find the clues to the death of Cho, and the reason for the attack, she finds that a contract has been put on her head. She is directed to find the one man that can help her known only as the Reverend, as she continues to race against time in a deadly game of cat and mouse. She finds that she has help in places that she could not imagine, and at the same time she is being betrayed by a friend. Will she find the Reverend and the answers before it is too late? There is a new and dangerous kind of vampire in her territory, will she be able to find them and stop the distribution of Plast before the Hunters lose their edge?

Buffy, Vampire Slayer move over, there is a new girl in town.

J.J. Westendarp is a new author to keep an eye on. In Spiral X, he has put together a great story filled with an exciting cast of characters. While stories of Vampire Hunters are the norm of the day, Westendarp has taken the theme and twisted it to a whole different level. The twists and turns throughout the entire book keep you reading and engrossed, trying to second guess the story. Cheryl, the heroine of the story is a personable and charismatic person, believing in good, and yet having to step out of her bounds to find answers. She is alternately horrified and then angered the by death of her mentor, the one man who has made her the Hunter that she has become. That anger is what drives her, because with the death of an old family friend, she begins to lose hope, wondering if this is the right thing, second guessing her entire life.

When she meets the Reverend, her whole world takes on another twist, one that you just do not see coming. There is such simplicity to the story and yet, the interactions of all the characters create a complexity that keeps you reading long past lights out. I would also like to say that I believe that we could all do with a friend like Virgil, her best friend since Kindergarten. They have each others backs at all times, and their friendship creates an extra depth in the story, already rich with both suspense and surprises.

I really enjoyed this book and I hope that J.J Westendarp has plans to make it a series. I would like to see more of these characters, they are genuine and exciting. I started this book and could not put it down, the plot was great with twists and turns that kept you turning the pages. This is a great book for those that are interested in this particular genre but it is written in such a fashion that any one that just likes a good story would enjoy it. The author makes you believe in a world, deep in Vampire lore and those that hunt them.

This would be an interesting book for a book club, I would think the twists in the story would give everyone something to discuss, and the perspective of the writer is just a bit more unique, something that is always welcome.

Received as a free e-book from the Author, all opinions are my own based off my reading and understanding of the book.

SUMMARY (from Goodreads):

THOUGHTS/OPINION:
I am kind of mixed on this book. Half of me likes it while the other half didn’t. This book feels like a bag of contradictions. One moment Cheryl is all bad ass the next she isn’t. At the beginning there was no mention of her psychic abilities and yet they all the sudden appear in the middle of the book. There is also a lot of telling us what is going on what Cheryl is thinking instead of showing us different things. In fact a lot of the time it felt as if Cheryl was taking a step to the side to explain to us the reader what was happening then stepping back into the scene.

At other times she would break up with someone b/c she couldn’t trust them and yet she was a Hunter and wouldn’t tell anyone about that so again that walking contradiction and higher standards. I also didn’t like how everything was tied up too nicely, too neatly, too easy to explained. Cheryl is beaten within an inch of her life but yet manages to be healed in a way I don’t understand . It just didn’t work for me.

Now that being said I did still like the book. I liked the interactions between people. I enjoyed watching Cheryl be badass but throw up b/c she knew she had taken it too far. I liked the overall story and plot a drug has gotten out on the streets making people act like animals and its Cheryl’s job to figure out who is supplying it and how to make it stop. I do like Cheryl’s over all personality and she did say some funny things. Ex: It did creep me out a little bit, but my life was already a veritable smorgasbord of things which crept one out. Why not add one more. Pg. 89.

I also liked the way Vampires were explained and how they were made that was a nice twist on the story and how to kill a vamp was interesting. I did enjoy how they are formed and really liked it. And like I stated before there are a lot of multi-cultural backgrounds working in this story which is refreshing.

All in all not a bad book but not a winner for me.

Favorite Quotes:
It did creep me out a little bit, but my life was already a veritable smorgasbord of things which crept one out. Why not add one more. Pg. 89.

I just finished reading Spiral X by J.J. Westendarp and am at a slight loss for words that can explain how much I enjoyed reading this book. From the moment I began reading it, I was instantly pulled in and held captive in the world that Mr. Westendarp has created. Spiral X has all of the qualities that make it a must read book. The main character, Cheryl, is everything I expect to find when reading about a woman vampire hunter. She is strong, confident, and can take care of herself in any situation while at the same time being vulnerable and fragile, if only to her own fears and doubts. But at the end of the day she always pulls through and proves that some things in life are worth fighting for no matter how much you have to give up in return. Throw in a best friend who knows Cheryl for who she really is, a mysterious vampire hunter named Rev, and loads of butt kicking action and you have all the ingredients to make an amazing story. Spiral X is a tragic yet beautiful story that you will enjoy reading over and over. I hope that Mr. Westendarp will continue with Cheryl’s story and will most certainly be waiting in line to get a copy!

I enjoyed Spiral X quite a bit, which was surprising because I've read my fill of female vampire hunters over the past few years. It is obvious that there is more intended for the main character, Cheryl, so some things are left unexplained as is typical with a continuing series. The story itself is self-contained and resolves itself nicely, so the larger mysteries are the "hook" to get people to read more books. Even without that, however, I'd say that the world created is interesting enough that I would want to keep reading.

In particular, the author's take on vampires is one I've never seen anywhere, and actually makes complete sense. If he came up with that all on his own, I have to say that I'm impressed. Vampires have been done to death recently, so anything both new and non-sparkly is a welcome surprise. The hunters and the larger "organization" that becomes involved was also handled quite nicely and believably. Well, as believably as anything that involves hunting down vampires, obviously.

One thing that stood out to me is that, except for one or two moments, it made virtually no difference that the main character was female. I'm wondering then what prompted the author to decide she was going to be female. It isn't a bad thing that she is, but as I noted there are a plethora of female vampire hunters nowadays. It was certainly refreshing to read one that didn't include all sorts of kinky, erotic sex, that's for sure, but almost everything about her was asexual, so there must have been something behind his decision. Also, one of her overtly "feminine" traits (the "pouty face") seemed unnecessary. Believe me, I've seen such a face and fallen victim to it far too many times to count, so I understand what the intent behind it was, but it seemed sort of tacked on. It wasn't bad, but just didn't need to be there I felt.

I won't get into any specific plot details, but the writing was well done and conveyed the story in an easy to digest manner. There was just the right amount of exposition and figuring things out to balance out the action, which there was quite a bit of. The characters were instantly distinct and recognizable, which is often a pet peeve of mine. There is nothing I hate more than a book where I need to keep notes to tell characters apart. While I realize that people in real life often have names, looks, or traits very similar to each other, in a fictional novel there's no need for that and only serves to confuse the reader. That was simply not an issue here. Every character was introduced and became immediately recognizable, all without extensive exposition describing them. Same with the locations and settings. Just enough detail was given to let me imagine it in my head, and that's it. That's exactly how I want my books to read, and this book was perfect in that regard.

As mentioned earlier, there are some mysteries that are left unsolved, on purpose I have to imagine. Ignoring those, the main storyline was interesting enough to keep me reading, but not so complex that it somehow gets resolved before I'm even aware of it or without really knowing why, which happens more often than it should. Like a good detective story, the plot proceeded from one clue to another, and the surprises were believable and well-implemented. Besides the purposely unexplained elements, the ending was realistic and believable, with no deus ex machina swooping in to save the day. It could have been deeper and more involved, with lots of subplots and distractions, but it didn't need to be and didn't suffer due to their lack. And the first person perspective, which doesn't bother me at all, helps limit the aforementioned distractions.

I would read a second novel immediately, and anticipate that one will be even better as the author's writing talent increases. Get this book, it's a steal at the normal price, let alone discounted prices.

In his debut novel J.J. Westendarp introduces the reader to a darker side of paranormal where life and death may be determine by how much one has Faith:

Cheryl has been fighting vampires since she was 16 and now six years later she is still fighting but questioning how much fight she has left in her as she has just crossed some unwritten line but, she is not about to give up yet. With the introduction of a new street drug, Plast, that turns the human user into their primal self when they come back down from their High, Chery knows that the vampires are the ones distributing it on the street, this may be her last fight but she wants to make her streets safe again. To make matters worse, it is going to be very hard to do her job as there has been an underworld hit put out on Cheryl with the emphases on dead. From cops to underworld bosses to gang members, Cheryl will leave no rock unturned and neither will the bad guys as they pursues Cheryl for the bounty on her head, and she pursues the distributor of Plast.

Loved this book, it was everything that I wanted it to be; lots of action, darker writing and a little bit of twist on the paranormal genre. The book was fairly well written (I found a few typos here and there but nothing major), easy to read and the plot line was full of mystery and suspense. Additionally, Westendarp was not afraid of his main characters getting hurt or suffering, which I prefer as it opens up a whole new whelm of possibilities that the author can explore.

This is the first book I have read that had a belief in God as a very powerful weapon against vampires. I know that in Laurell K. Hamilton's series that Anita believes in God and that is why her cross glows, but this takes it to whole other level. Westendarp has reintroduced an aspect that I think has been lost in the paranormal genre and the old folk lore about Vampires and Demons being destroyed by an individual's Faith in God. The way that Westendarp uses the church and the blessing of stakes is a great reinvention of an old "myth".

I really liked Rev and the what he is and what he represents. He is a very interesting character and I hope that we are able to see more of him in later books, I do not want to give too much away about who and what Rev is. Lets just say it is something that I have not seen in a very long time, I'm thinking 90s area. Cheryl is part of the main reason that I liked this book, she was a great mis of tough chick/vulnerable. She does not think that she has all the answers, she is willing to get the job done, but after 6 years of fighting, she is wonder how much longer she can actually fight. I think that Westendarp did a good job of not crossing the line into what I have found lately the annoying ass kicking i know everything heroine in this genre.

The one thing I'm not sure about, and it could be that I missed a reference to it earlier in the book, is that Cheryl is part physic when it comes to vampires. She is able to pick up who is a vampire, and sometimes tell what they are planning or going to do next. I felt that this aspect was just dropped on me halfway through the book, as I do not remember it mention in the beginning. It is an interesting power, that I think will be explored more, but it is not to the extent (yet?) that she is able to fully read anyone's mind (think more like a spidy sense feeling).

The is mystery in this book is great with twists and turns, with ones that I am sure that you will not see coming, coupled with some new ideas and great reinvention of old ones that I think that Westendarp has something here. Spiral X is an easy to read, fast paced, action infused novel that I think those who like the paranormal genre on the darker side of things will enjoy. Westendarp is definitely an Indie author to watch out for and I know I will be picking up the next book.

Enjoy!!!!

Spiral X by J. J. Westendarp is a great read. I began reading this book with mixed feelings and the slow start wasn't a good sign. However, once the pace picked up so did my interest. This story is engaging, the characters are well developed and this book is just a great addition to the urban fantasy genre. I also wanted to point out that the author is male! A rarity in this genre but what's even more unusual is that the novel is good! I haven't come across many of these gems in my reading. That makes if worth picking up if just to experience a different point of view.

Cheryl is definitely a kick ass chick. She's 22, was trained by the best, and is a full on vampire hunter. She has a real tough attitude along with a few powerful abilities that come in handy in her line of work. Cheryl's missions go from solo to forced teamwork mid-way through the story. This is what really kick started this tale for me. She ends up working along side police and FBI agents in a battle against vamps. It was fun watching her adjust her methods to be able to work within the group. Cheryl, the wild hunter, is thrown into a partnership that's built around rules and protocols. For the most part she does fairly well but it's those occasional slip ups that really make this book interesting.

My favorite character in this novel was The Reverend, a.k.a. Rev. Don't let the name fool you, he's one badass dude. Fortunately he fights on the side of good... kinda, so he teams up with Cheryl. I don't want to give too much away but if you've read the synopsis you know that he has a secret or two. For the most part, Rev is a mystery. A few things are revealed but I have a feeling that there's more to him than meets the eye.

The storyline takes so many unexpected turns that it will keep you guessing. Just when you think you've figured out an answer you discover the truth and are left wondering what clues you missed along the way. This book just keeps throwing things at you, you'll never feel bored! Spiral X will not only have you trying to solve a few crimes but will also have you trying to figure out how all of the characters fit into the grand scheme of things. The players' alliances and stories are constantly changing. Just when you think that you have one of them pinned, they'll let something slip that puts who's side they're on back into question. There are many shades on grey in this tale.

Spiral X is a great book and a real page turner once you get past the slow start. It's a vampire hunter story but has several key elements that really sets it apart from the mold. Not only is there otherworld fun but there's also a great deal of mystery and suspense. A fun read with a nice mix of reality intertwined with vampire fiction. No sex but then again, there wasn't any time with all the non-stop action!

"Vampires and drugs don't mix." - aobibliophile™

Plast is the new Extasy but far more dangerous and deadly. it has found its way onto the Dallas metroplex. Cheryl Erikson is a Vampire Hunter out to get those involved in the drug's proliferation. with the help of her best friend Virgil, fellow Hunter Tank, FBI agent Fasano and the mysterious Hunter Rev, she fights the vampire Arthur and his minions and faces the demons that threaten to consume her life. if that isn't a handful, she needs to find out as well who ordered a contract out on her head.
J.J. Westendarp has written an interesting take on the vampire hunter story. his characters - the human ones - could be anyone in your neighborhood who go about their daily business. the difference is that when night falls, they take on the role of deadly crime fighters.
Cheryl, the main protagonist, tells the story in her point of view. despite the skills she exhibits as a Hunter, Cheryl is a vulnerable sensitive young woman facing trauma from the loss of those people closest to her. when she crosses the line for the first time, she is shocked at herself. she constantly struggles with her feelings but this only motivates her further to continue her fight against the Underworld. she later learns the answer to her question - if the end justifies the means.
at certain moments in the book, i initially found all this self-analyis cum emotional psychobabble distracting or cumbersome but i later realized that it was critical to Cheryl's growth as a person and her desire to be a Hunter. i advise readers then to be a little gentle with our heroine. to know Cheryl is to understand her from within and from without.
Spiral X is a paranormal thriller with a cast of hardened drug dealers, shady informants, evil vampire thugs, nosy cops and suave vampire hunters. the author has injected his novel with fight scenes, surprising twists and turns and a little bit of drama. overall, i enjoyed reading this book. it seems like a sequel may be in order and i look forward to one.
move over Buffy. Cheryl Erikson has just grabbed your seat and crown. it looks like she is here to stay for good. care to partner up?

Cheryl is a Hunter. A Vampire Hunter. Not only that, but she's so good at what she does that the Underworld has a contract out on her. She has the best percentage of Vampire kills in any district and, if that weren't enough, she's about to become drawn into a big, secretive drug deal that has the ability to change the world as she knows it. Not only does Plast have a detrimental and violent effect on humans, it's central to a heinous plan to create a new breed of Vampire that won't succumb to the usual weaponry. In addition to her usual sidekicks Tank and Virgil, Cheryl meets a mysterious Hunter with an unusual past and some interesting connections, who joins them in the never-ending battle against the Underworld and the drug that's fueling their leader's plans.

J. J. Westendarp has created in Cheryl a woman who can kick butt and take no prisoners, yet, even with that sense of duty, has a softer side for the human "victims" who have chosen to serve Vampires. Cheryl is very likable and sympathetic, even as she exudes power and control. She's reminiscent of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," with some "Blade" thrown in. I could easily see this story as a movie or a TV action series. Cheryl had all the elements you'd expect in an action hero: a tortured past that gave rise to her current profession, a few trusted associates, a true devotion to saving the world, and the ability to kick ass while still keeping a sense of humor. Overall, all of the characters fit nicely in the mold of typical action figures, and I really found myself rooting for Cheryl in the story.

Although an enjoyable and fast-paced read, it was a too neatly tied up for my taste. The surprises are a little too predictable, and the connections between people and events a little too convenient and simplistic. Neat, but a little too neat. Much of the dialogue was trite, with explanations and events that seemed too perfectly organized. They fit the mold of an action story, but there wasn't anything extraordinary or special that got me excited. Instead of feeling like I was immersed in the action, I felt like I was watching a play onstage with everything perfectly scripted.

The story is nicely written and the writing style was very readable and interesting, with no more than a handful of obvious typographical errors. A perfect read for those who love fast-paced action stories with a paranormal basis.

While most people don't even realize vampires exist, twenty-two year old Cheryl Erikson hunts them. She is one of the best vampire hunters around. She has a psychic abilities when it comes to vampires she can feel their presence, and sometimes their intentions, which gives her an advantage. She also has her best friend Virgil, a techno whiz that lives with her, he does his best to help keep her safe.
When the new drug Plast shows up in Dallas, Cheryl finds out that vampires are dealing it. While most drugs don't affect vampires Plast makes them almost indestructible, not to mention what it does to the humans who take it.
When Cho, the man who trained her to be a vampire hunter winds up dead on her doorstep, and the person that killed him tries to kill her, she is warned that there is a contract on her head, and that the one person who can help her is a hunter called Reverend. Cheryl soon finds herself crossing lines she would never cross to get the answers she needs, but in the process she starts questioning whether she wants to continue hunting vampires. Can good prevail over evil, will Cheryl and her friends be able to stop the vampires before the vampires stop them?
I am a huge fan of paranormal reads, and this book fit the bill and then some!
Cheryl is a very strong character, a lady whom most people wouldn't mess with, but once we get her back story she also has a vulnerable side, having to deal with several losses in her life, Virgil is the constant in her life. He is like a mother hen trying to protect her.Tank a fellow Hunter, is also someone she counts on. There is also Father Harold, and the hunter called Rev. Each character plays a very important role in the story.I thought the Reverand's character was one of the most interesting of all, while a hunter, Cheryl doesn't completely trust him in the beginning, but soon realizes he might be one of her greatest allies.
This book never has a down time, it is totally action packed from page one. The authors writing skills draw you into the world of the vampire hunter, painting such vivid descriptions that you feel like you are part of the story.Fans of paranormal fiction are going enjoy this book. I only hope that this is only the beginning for Cheryl and we see a new book from Mr. Westendarp soon.

Review brought to you by guest reviewer Jennifer Jensen

22-year-old Cheryl Erickson is a Vampire Hunter with some serious attitude. She’s considered such a nuisance to the vamp community that there’s a bounty out on her life. While she’s trying to keep herself alive, she is also investigating a new drug called Plast that has hit the streets of Dallas. Normally she’d stay out of it, but since vampires are involved distributing it to the humans, Cheryl makes it her mission to put an end to its circulation.

After Cheryl becomes a suspect in a homicide, she teams up with a secretive division of the FBI that has had their eye on her for quite some time. Now with all sorts of government perks at her fingertips, Cheryl’s job might be just a bit easier.

I am a sucker for vampire series, especially with strong female heroines like Cheryl. J.J. Westendarp’s writing style for Spiral X (which I’m hoping will develop into a series) is really similar to Laurel K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series, but much more imaginative. In Cheryl’s world, God and Lucifer are at war and humans are caught in the crossfire. I felt the explanations were really well drawn out, and they kept me wanting more. I loved the whole concept of this book and would definitely purchase his writing in the future. Additionally, there were some really great plot twists that I never saw coming. There’s nothing worse than reading a book and knowing what is going to happen when you’re not even halfway through yet.

Though I enjoyed it, there were still a few things that annoyed me about Cheryl and about the opening scenes in the book. On at least 3 different occasions, Cheryl pinches the bridge of her nose and for whatever reason this was really noticeable to me after she’d done it a few times. I wish that he’d had her express her annoyance or anger in another manner. The beginning of the book took us right into the action, and I wish we’d seen more of the drug’s effects before Cheryl figured it out. When the book first starts, Cheryl already knows about the drug and what it does. I would have really like some more build up, but overall this was a surprisingly good read.

This is a paranormal book just the way I like it. I find a book perfect for me when I can’t stop reading it, and that is what happened to me with Spiral X.

Cheryl is a vampire and demon hunter. She is great, trained by the best, commited till the end with this lifestyle. She doesn’t have a job, but she has money because someone runs a business for her, and her best friend, Virgil, has her back all the times. But in the hunter business, things can go wrong at any time, no matter how big and good is your support group.

That’s what happens with Cheryl. Things start to go very wrong when a new drug comes into town. It wouldn’t matter to her, but it seems that this drug’s being distributed by vampires and the humans that they drink from. When her trainer, known as Cho, appears to see her, it only could be a good thing, right? Sadly, it doesn’t turn that way when he arrives almost dead and a demon behind him attacks and almost kills Cheryl. From this moment and on, she sees herself trapped in a web full of mysteries, needing the help of another vampire hunter, someone she doesn’t know, called Reverend.

J. J. Westendarp created a story full of action, full of paranormal and full of originality. I was tired of the same things about vampires and hunters, but Westendarp gave me fresh air. Cheryl is a wonderful character, a person you would love to know. Virgil, her best friend since Kindgarden, is a friend you would like to have. But you wouldn’t like to be in her situation.

Full of mysteries, full of turn arounds and cliffhangers, the book left me breathless. You never know what can happen next, and you are surprised all the time. It was a wonderful book to read after so much time without a paranormal one. Made me remember why I really love the genre.

I would, however, do a revision again in the story. Some paragraphs are a little confusing, but it is nothing you can’t understand in the end. I recommend.

Cheryl is a Hunter with a great reputation and hard ass attitude. When a new drug was circulated in her territory she goes on a hunt to learn about the harmful drug that doesn't only affect humans but makes them more dangerous than vampires.

Spiral X is like taking Buffy's (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) character infused with Blade's bad ass attitude. Spiral X was surprisingly good and a fast read. I have read a lot of female heroines or female vampire hunters but Cheryl's character felt fresh. She is talented, respected, hard core, yet knows right from wrong but that doesn't stop her from doing something she thinks can get the job done. Virgil, the geek best friend, is a great companion to Cheryl. I love the all-in-one sidekick-best friend-family effect that Virgil has on Cheryl. The Reverend was a shock to me. I wasn't expecting his character though. :) The additional characters are promising and well developed. I loved how Westendarp wrote Spiral X. It was not the typical vampire hunter novel that I always read. A fresh read with the numerous vampire novels today.

The book is a must read! I would like to know if Westendarp is thinking of creating a series for this book. If that will be the case, then count me as one of the number of fans that the book will surely garner. I want more! And additional information which makes the novel rock is the fact that 10% of the total sale will be given to charity - Child's Play Society. A writer to watch out for who has a big heart. Awesome right!?

I absolutely loved this book. It was action packed and I was totally blown away by how focused I became on the plot. I actually had to read it twice because the first time I read it, I practically devoured it while trying to figure out what happens next, and of course, I completely forgot to take notes so I could write a good review.
I love Cheryl, she is such a great strong female character. She totally kicks butt. A lot of times in paranormal books, the female character keeps getting put into situations where she needs to be rescued by some hunky supernatural guy, and ends up playing the damsel in distress rather than the butt kicking vamp hunter that was promised. While I do love those books too, it is just nice to see a crazy cool female main character. I will say that she does end up needing to be rescued but throughout the ordeal she stays strong and holds her own. I liked all of the plot twists and the fact that it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through.
J.J. Westendarp does a really good job on all of the characters, not just Cheryl, they all have great multi-faceted personalities and are totally believable. I especially love the villains and I don’t want to spoil anything for future readers so I can’t say why I love them so much but I will say that you think you know who the good and bad guys are but nothing in this story is exactly as it seems.
I know I’m gushing, but I was really pleased by the quality of the writing as well as the story.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves strong female character, action and adventure, paranormal and cop stories.
I give it a 5 out of a 5.

Cheryl Erikson is a Vampire Hunter and is taken on a wild ride when a vicious new drug called Plast hits the streets in her territory. This drug makes Vampires even harder to kill and makes the Humans taking the drug become deranged animals.

Cheryl along with her team of friends including her mentor Cho, her pastor Father Herald, her Best Friend Virgil and her fellow hunter Tank take the Vampire world by storm as the drug Plast leads them into a Vampire owned night club called Spiral X. X marks the spot as Cheryl finds her self trying to escape death and take down a Vampire named Arthur. Can she pull through when everyone is counting on her to save the day?

I really have a hard time with stories that are told first person and this book pulled it off very well. At first I wasn't connected with the Characters but the storyline really hooked me and before I knew it I was invested in each and every Character. When I had to put this book down I found myself thinking about each of them almost obsessively.

I enjoyed this book. There was no romance, no over done sex scenes. This was a true book with plots, twists and turns that the reader doesn't expect. Mystery and danger. Right up my alley!

This was a paranormal book right up there with the best of them but done differently. Cheryl, the main character, is fighting against Vampires who are still not known by most of the human population. She and a few of her friends are clued in to the secretive world and work together to keep the humans safe.

If you like the Anita Blake series you'll want to pick this one up!

Ok guys I was ecstatic to be asked to review this book. I love almost anything paranormal and was not disappointed with this book. From the start I was sucked in, for one reason the main character is female. I wanna be like Cheryl when I grow up! Seriously! This is not your typical vampire, hunter book. With it's twists and turns and OMG no way's it keeps you on the edge of your seat reading as fast as you can to find out what happens next. Cheryl, Virgil, Tank, Father Harold and Rev are just a few of the characters you will encounter in this book. What I love about this book though is that each character that you encounter has their own part to play and J.J. has done a wonderful job integrating them into the story line so that you "know" them almost as well as the main characters, no matter how short lived their time in the book is. Cheryl has a lot to deal with in this book, from fighting evil, vampires to dealing with the losing people that mean a great deal in her life, each twist shapes her into the wonderful character she is. She makes it through thanks to her circle of support with her best friend Virgil, Tank who is another Hunter that backs her up when needed, Father Harold and even the head of shadow government agency. You think you have it all figured out as you read and then BAM, out of the blue a new twist or turn. I loved it! And I can't wait for more! I clicked the last page and almost screamed....what happened next??? I can't wait to see/read the next installment! J.J. Westendarp has found a life long fan right here.

Spiral X is not your typical vampire story. I was thrilled to dive into a book where the vampires weren't civilized. The vampires Cheryl hunts are downright evil and they are part of a nasty drug operation in Dallas/Fort Worth.

This book was very fast paced and Cheryl felt like a more grown up, ass kicking Buffy, with a touch of the characters from Demons. She's a hunter, but I kept thinking, she's smiting those vamps! She was totally bad ass. There's no other way to describe her and so are most of her friends. And that cast of characters is really interesting, from Virgil, her homosexual BFF, Tank, a fellow hunter, to the crooks and teachers she's had throughout the years.

Westendarp really creates some "real" characters and though they have some fantastic abilities, he keeps the humanity there too. It was great to see a character like Cheryl, be able to kick butt and still be heartbroken over the loss of her "uncle" Don. People will like Cheryl because she's so strong and as you learn more about her, you marvel at how she can be that way at 22.

Westendarp also offers a lot of twists and turns as Cheryl seeks to uncover the source of the drug Plast, while ridding her turf of any vamps and demons that come her way. It really makes for a gripping read. He also offers an interesting take on the vampire legend.

Here's hoping he decides to continue with Cheryl's character in the future. I think there could be a lot of interesting stories that could wrap around her character.

For those who know me by know I love my vampire's and so when I had the chance to read this one I eagerly accepted. What I found though was not the typical Vamp story I am used too. For one I admit I haven't read too many female vampire hunters, yes I watched Buffy but haven't read too many not yet anyway.

I found I really liked Cheryl, tough and badass while hunting but still has compassion for the humans that find themselves enthralled by the vampires. I also like the fact she began to question herself and why she was hunting in the first place.

As for the vampires, I really liked the way this author took the myth and made it his own. I hadn't thought there could be any more ways they could be 'born' from. I was wrong.

This was only my second urban fantasy I have read and though I miss the 'romance' of vampires can't help it I am sucker for that(pun intended)and seeing them as evil was a bit hard for me to get used too.

Overall I really enjoyed this book, the characters were well written and I just adored Virgil by the way. The plot ran smooth even after a bit of a slow start but it didn't hinder me, to want to stop reading it.

So would I recommend? Yes if you are the type that loves their vampires as the bad guys while the good guys(girl)are Vampire hunters. Please give this one a read. Good Debut for JJ Westendarp.

Spiral X is a very well written story in the vampire hunter genre. The vamps in question are not sparkly little boyfriend types but instead blood drinkers bent on re-asserting their position at the top of the food chain. In a slightly different twist from the normal undead vamps that we are used to, this version of a vampire is possessed of a demonic spirit which entered the victims near/at death, otherwise they are very like the typical evil vamps of literature.

Cheryl Erikson is the main vampire hunter that this story focuses on; however, we do meet a few more including government types throughout the course of the tale. Cheryl is spoiled rich kid that has no need to work, due to an inheritance, and at night she hunts the vampires vigilante style as revenge for the death of her father. This story is well written and entertaining even in the face of hundreds of other vampire tales. It has some mysteries within it which remain unanswered hinting that a series could be in the future. The characters of Cheryl and her trusty cyber-sidekick Virgil are nicely developed and well supported by the characters of Tank and Father Harold. Together they make a wonderful vampire hunting team that could, in fact, make a lovely TV series.

With tons of action from beginning to end, this is a book that fans of the vampire lore will thrill to consume.

Never has a book deserved the words "action packed" more! What a roller-coaster of events!

What I enjoyed about this novel was the fact that it played in my head like a movie. The characters were believable, mythology understandable and there were twists and turns around every corner.

The Author being male only helped this novel. He made fight scenes and car chasing scenes believable and understandable. How many times have I read a fight scene where you are not sure what is happening and just go through it to see the end result? Too many to mention. But not this one!

Definitely a must read if you are tired of paranormal romance and love triangles of which this book has none. Thank the heavens!

It has a kick-ass heroine that has lost some motivation along the way, which only makes her human. She makes mistakes which is always a welcome change from the "I am the perfect heroine" scenario. Each character has depth and they are all fascinating!

I can't wait to find out what happens to Cheryl and I hope we get to see more of Rev.

Keep an eye out for "Lauren and Lu's Review" on this novel.

Spiral X takes the reader back to the time when vampires weren't the good guys. This is deep, dark and gritty. It is action packed, very well-written and the detail is immense.

The main character in this is Cheryl Erikson, who became a Hunter when her father was murdered. She has no need to work as she is the figurehead president of her father's company. She is also "one of the boys", no glitzy pink nail varnish for this tough cookie, although she has a vulnerable side that makes her altogether likeable. She is aided and abetted by her BFF Virgil, cyber-geek extraordinaire. She also has the Hunter Network behind her, which includes Cho (her mentor), Tank (another Hunter) and Father Harold (guy in the know!).

There are twists and turns, mysteries and curve balls in this gritty book which doesn't turn away from the "hero" getting beaten up either. It actually makes a nice change to have the main character get hurt for once, instead of just everyone around her/him.

If you like the paranormal genre, like vampire stories but are getting bored with "good" vampires, then I recommend this book.

I haven’t really read a lot of the paranormal genre however I loved this book. It was so fast paced that I was gripped reading faster that I probably should off to find out what was going to happen next.

One moment I would think I knew what was going to happen next then I would turn the page and be shocked by another twist. This book definitely keeps you on your toes. The characters are so well developed and each character has a specific role to play in the novel. The author skills shine through as he makes you believe that this world actually exists and this to me is always a sign of a wonderful book.

I really enjoyed this book and believe that a series could be made out of it which I would really want to read. Defiantly recommended to fans of the paranormal genre.

The main lead character, Cheryl Erickson is a vampire hunter. She's a strong and confident vampire hunter. She's good at what she does but she can also be "soft" when it comes to her family and friends. I liked her character. I also liked that she has a lot of friends with her, especially Tank. I really enjoyed the time when Cheryl is with her fellow hunter, Tank. I loved it when they're together! Awww - why not Mr. Westendarp? Sorry spoiler :)

I liked the plot and the twist in the story - I definitely didn't expect it. I was laughing at myself for not "getting" it. This may not be the same level as Riley Jenson and Anita Blake but Cheryl is absolutely a new character which I believe readers will love. This is an action-packed book that will keep you interested the whole time.

Spiral X is reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Cheryl Erikson, this story's vampire and demon hunter, takes on the shadowy underworld that most people never know exists. To add to Cheryl's problems, there is a new drug called Plast flooding her city and the vampires are in charge.

For me, the similarities to Buffy were a little too close. Both are young, beautiful, tough women with boyfriend issues and only a few close friends they trust. The plot had no big surprises and at times things felt wrapped with too perfect a bow. While there isn't a lot new here, Westendarp kept the plot moving at a fast pace. The writing is crisp and kept me entertained. If you're a Buffy and/or modern vampire fan, this one's for you.

Can I get more please? Spiral X by J.J. Westendarp just fell into my lap (gotta love Library Thing) and I'm glad it did. This was a fast paced thrill ride from beginning to end. Cheryl Erikson is a 22 year old Vampire Hunter in Dallas, Texas. Not only is she a hunter, she's a psychic and can sense when vampires are around. Throughout the story, she is trying to get rid of the vampire population and a drug called Plast which is making them stronger and harder to kill. With the help of Cheryl's sidekicks (Virgil, Tank and Fasano), she finds out from an informant that Plast is being distributed at the bar called "Spiral X." From beginning to end, this kept me glued to my Kindle. The ending left some things undone, so I hope there will be another installment.

It's got great ingredients for an entertaining read - a feisty, sexy heroine, demonic vampires (with another twist on the vampire mythos), a relentless pace and loads of action - but it just didn't work for me. I didn't like Cheryl, the writing got on my nerves, and it has a strong Christian theme which didn't bother me too much but did nothing to win my favour. On the positive side, the plot is serious, and not just a front for a supernatural love triangle, which seems to have become the cliche of vampire fiction these days.

I haven't read many slayer books so I may not be the best judge, but I loved this book. Cheryl is so badass! I loved every second of the fast paced story. This is an indie book, but it didn't read like one. I didn't find any glaring spelling or grammar mistakes. This is a high quality book. I highly recommend Spiral X to anyone who likes Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I liked the story, but a few items were not really clear and I had to read back a few pages to figure them out. The main character is very Buffy like and I like the idea of a tough female lead. Not a bad story, but I found my self putting the book down more often then not. I plowed through it last night and I did like it over all.

I liked this more than I thought I would. Which is mostly due to vampire burn-out.  It turns out if I space them out (reading that is) I can take them much better, especially if they have some imagination to them.  The heroine is seriously kick-ass and likable, and the vampires are actual vampires, at least what we always thought them to be.

Pretty good vampire tale. Cheryl is a vampire hunter, a la Buffy, and becomes involved with a group of drug dealing vampires in Dallas. As events unfold she questions her purpose, motives, and morals. Good supporting characters. A few unexplained supernatural events that were convenient plot devices, but overall a fairly enjoyable read.
