The supermodel and author of the Los Angeles Times bestseller No Lifeguard on Duty tackles the perils of looking perfect and offers commonsense advice about how to feel good about yourself no matter what Everything About Me Is Fake is a fast, funny, name-dropping, sexy read about how even the world’s first supermodel doesn’t feel close to perfect and never did―despite appearances to the contrary. This book explores how women spend their lives striving for the unattainable, trying to look like they walked off the pages of a magazine with Jennifer Aniston stick-straight hair bouncing in the breeze and Cover Girl smiles hiding the pain. She discusses why we need to feel perfect, and how our pasts, our unattainable ideas of beauty (thanks to Hollywood), and male expectations all collude to make women feel like they should be perfect. Filled with anecdotes from her personal life that will shock and entertain, as well as concrete beauty tips that she learned while modeling, that will help anyone feel better in a matter of minutes, here is a book that no woman should miss.
Janice Doreen Dickinson is an American supermodel, fashion photographer, actress, author and agent. She has recently opened her own modeling agency, The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, after judging for four cycles on America's Next Top Model.
When Janice Dickinson left America's Next Top Model, the show started to fucking suck. She was the best part. There is no longer anyone to call the model's fat cows or hump Tyra. *sigh*
I came across this book a few days ago and thought "This will be a fun, light read." Just judging from the title alone, one would assume this book is about how to be shallow and fabulous, right?
It was so much more than that. Janice is so smart and so funny and so interesting that it is upsetting that she was the "world's first super model". Come on now, that is just not fair. I thought the beautiful ones were suppose to be stupid, so people like me can feel more superior! Dang it!
And god, is she beautiful. And there are plenty of pictures to oggle at along the way. Even a nice nudie pic. *wink*
I love this book because she gives really awesome advice about the normal girl subjects- boys (be mean to them & ignore them, they like that apparently), weight issues(get off your fat ass and move) and boobies (her's are fabulous, she mentions many times). And she never comes across as condescending. Just funny and honest.
Sure, she name drops all her celebrity friends and lovers and reminds you that she was the "world's first super model" every other page. But she tells it like it is,doesn't bullshit on any topic. She's crude, crazy, rude, loud (yes, I could hear her even through the pages of the book) and raunchy. She made me want to be her best friend. She is, as they say, a girl's girl. She seems like one of the good ones because she has such a big heart (and boobs).
I know this is a really lame and ass-kissing review. But that's just how it goes sometimes.
This is the second book by Janice. I loved the first book alot about her life. The first book she was not afraid to name drop but this book she did not drop names on celebrities she had stories about. Reading the second book was about the ugliness of the modeling business and alot of stuff she already talked about from the first book about her life. It is a book to read for someone who wants to get into the modeling business especially for young girls. She also talks about how to take care of yourself and offers beauty & fitness tips. Due to her childhood abuse from her pedophile father she still carries an angerment problem against MEN. She gives you advice on how to treat men & keep your man in line. I will not be taking her advise about men for she has been married three times and she's still bitching she needs a man. She is a woman who demands power and not afraid to speak her mind. I love Janice as a person who speaks her mind but don't agree on alot of her self help tips when her own life is currently on VH1 Celebrity Rehab right now. She is not a professional to give that kind of advice when her own life is still not fixed from her childhood abuse. She also talks about her plastic surgeries and botox treatments that makes her feeling perfect. She doesn't recommend it, but admits they make her feel better. She still has alot of bad grudges on Mick Jagger and Sly Stallone that she needs to deal with for she had bashed them in both of her books. She is a mess in my opinion from seeing her on tv and reading her books. I recommend the first book more because it will explain why she is like she is.
This book wasn't nearly as good as her first. It continues the semi-autobiographical theme by telling us stories that presumably weren't good enough to make it into the first book, although some are still pretty funny. She also gives random bits of advice, some of which are good and some of which are ridiculous, like the relationship and dating advice.
Another big issue here is Janice is promoting a pretty good message that what you see in the media is all airbrushed and its a level of perfection even a supermodel can't aspire to. But it still seems like Janice hasn't fully understood this herself yet. She has a really anorexic mindset and it kind of spoils that message of the book. When it comes to weight her message seems to be "its okay to not be perfect, as long as your a size zero model who is slightly bloated because you're on your period", otherwise you're just fat.
She worries about what her daughter is going to pick up from the media, yet she still hasn't seemed to realize that she's still totally believing that toxic message herself, something which will probably effect her daughter a whole lot more. That kind of hypocrisy gets frustrating in a book which is about being perfect even in your imperfection.
To be honest it seems like Janice got a deal to write more books and so she basically had to throw together whatever she could think of to fill up the pages. If you're a big fan of Janice Dickinson then you probably will enjoy this book anyway, but if not you might just want to try her first one, No Life Guard on Duty, as its got a lot more consistency, depth and likeability.
The first book was OK, even a bit funny at times. This one was intolerable. Poor Janice, but ugh. Not recommended for anyone. Not that you were lining up to read it or anything.
Janice was never one of my favorites, but her sense of humor is hysterical sometimes. She can be self-contradictory and I found her disdain for plus-sized models annoying, but she seems to have no shortage of amusing antecdotes and the whole Mick Jagger thing laced throughout the book is pretty funny. (If she were as over him as she claims to be, I wonder, would she have bothered mentioning him over and over?) A funny, light read.
Janice Dickenson is the type of person you love to hate. I was hoping that her book would be more entertaining, but it just kinda struck me as a LOT of name dropping and bragging. And it's kind of posed like a self help book, as if she has things all figured out. Meh. Just not really buying it. It had its moments, just not really my thing.
Janice Dickinson tells it like it is. What I like about this book is that she admits to having plastic surgery b/c even she knows that she doesn't really look like her model pictures in real life. It's all airbrushing. (Why even use real models these days, anyway?) I don't agree with Dickinson's bashing of plus-size models. Why can't those girls get some love too? Shouldn't that be a healthier direction for society than saying "Look at this image that you'll never be able to attain and yet you'll spend thousands of dollars a year trying and feeling bad about yourself"??? I think so. When I read Dickinson's books, I can't help but find a disconnect between her author persona and the persona she reflects on TV and in magazines. She seems a bit nicer and more welcoming in the book, but on America's Next Top Model, and even moreso after she left the show, she always seemed so harsh and mean and just plain wild and crazy. It surprised me to read that she was a recovered alcoholic b/c it seems like whenever I see her on TV nowadays, she's flashing the cooch or running around clubs and I can't help but wonder what's going on. I'm sure she's fine and that her real personality is wild and crazy (can't even imagine what she was like on coke and drugs back in the day). If I met her, I'm sure she'd tell me to lose some weight and get a nose job and I'd still say, "Wow, thank you Janice!"
I love Janice Dickenson- I find her very entertaining and i love the fact that she does not apologize for her opinion. Many people are put off or scared or offended by her but like i said- i like her.
This book was definitely not as deep or insightful into her life as her previous book "No Lifguard on duty" but it was in the true spirit of Janice- entertaining. She is still a name dropper but does not give as much detail and there is basically no plot. All Janice is doing is spewing advice about how she takes care of herself and is brutally honest about modeling and the life of a supermodel. If there is one hting i did learn here is that i NEVER want to sacrifice the things one needs to sacrifice (Like food, friends) to become anything!! Glamour is well, glamorous and i am still very much drawn to articles on how to beautify yourself because its in every womans best interest to feel beautiful but the point of the book is to be realistic and to NOT listen to all those magazines. Sigh. why can't i just be perfect. . .like Janice ;-p
I don't remember anything about this book nor why I even read it except maybe I wanted the literary equivalent of trashy reality tv to read while on the train. I do recall being impressed with her honest admission of all her plastic surgery work and she's pretty opinionated, which is always kind of fun to read.
I haven't read her first book so I thought this one was interesting. However, I expected a lot more dish on celebrities she had dated. She mostly just complained about Sly being cheap and Mick not acknowledging her years later. After reading the other reviews, I will try to find her first book.
I love this woman. She is such a bitch but I love her anyway. I love the way she writes and the stories she tells. Her books are so captavating you can't put them down. I read this one in a few hours.
I paid 2.99 for this book. It was pretty good, funny, and what I expected. Janice doesn't disappointment and it's her voice, no matter who helped her with writing, editing, etc. A book you can put down and pick up intermittently (which I did) and not miss a beat to the end.
Janice Dickinson is amazing if only for her ability to sound at once totally honest and totally full of shenanigans. Bitch is crazy but you kind of have to respect her for it (lest she stab you).
interesting small stories one after another. good to entertain and crazy to know that Dickinson does not eat anything but water!!! Thats crazy! how could she survice.
