Sadly 1 star – Romantic Suspense
Why did I read this? Well, I love military romantic suspense and of course the smokin’ hot cover didn’t hurt matters. But I understand now why there are such low ratings because unfortunately, the cover is the best...possibly only...redeeming thing about this book.
It just didn’t work for me or hold my interest...at all. The love scenes are odd, giggle inducing, and have very flowery prose, especially for a military romantic suspense read.
“French kisses and two-fingered pressure lifted her backside off the duvet and began to salsa her hips, turning her quick pants into long moaned wind chants. He found her voice; resurrected it from the dead. It got hollered into a pillow when she spilled sweet coquito yum nectar down his chin.”
“Put it in just a little bit, papi?” *snicker, snort*
I’m a fairly generous reviewer, but this is a pretty bad mess.
Note: Alexis Grant is another pen name for author L.A. Banks who passed away in 2011. I have genuine admiration for everything she accomplished in her career, so this rating/review is in no way meant to be disrespectful of her legacy.

June 24, 2011DNF. made it to pg 70. I can't stand the heroine and she was just reunited with hero who she has a big past with and it made no sense. Also tons of information overload. Can't get into it.

Funny. The description here lists the main female's character as "Mia Santiago" but in the book her last name is Austin. She is described as a "blatina" (author's word, not mine for 1/2 African-American, 1/2 Latina). So why was her named changed? To sell more books? FAIL. I don't have high standards for smut and even by those, this book was poor. Judging by the other comments on here about this book, I'm pretty darn spot-on. You want "Special Ops" along with your smut? Read Stephanie Tyler. She's a better author from all directions.

I really like LA Banks, but the only thing I didn't like about this, is that the men almost talked too much. Most of the alpha male posturing is short and sweet and here I thought they kept going just for the sake of continuing. Otherwise, I liked the story. I liked the heat between Ryan and Mia. Overall good story, just too much excessive male dialogue. You expect it from the women...not the men.

Apart from the first three pages where the hero had a blast from the past of his ex, the story did very little for me. It certainly didn't 'sizzle and burn' me. On the contrary, it left me feeling flat and cold.

Mia and Ryan were two people madly in love, but the lives they chose took them in very different directions. Although there were no hard feelings between them, fate had other plans. Years later, they're brought together again, only one of them is in grave danger. It's up to the other to save their life.
Ryan is the type of man that really defines a hero. He chose to go into the military to help people, I mean genuinely help people. When he was rewarded for doing amazing things, things people would get medals for, he simply shrugged it off. To him, he was just doing his job. It didn't matter if it was one or a billion lives, he did what he had to do to get the job done. He didn't want praise or awards. He just wanted to keep everyone safe. I also thought it was nice that he was never a jerk, in any sense of the word. He was very down to earth and very upfront with his feelings. He did have to lie to keep his cover, but it was all to keep everyone as safe as possible. He never denied what he felt. He knew he wanted Mia. He knew he loved her. He knew he had to protect her.
I really liked that Mia and Ryan didn't hate each other. Most stories that have old flames reuniting have some sort of issue that caused the breakup and left some sort of negative emotion in one or both of the main characters. In this story, they unerstood the reasons why things didn't work out, and although there were some unanswered questions regarding why one or the other didn't try to make it work, there was no resentment. There was no hatred. There was simply the passion they had felt before, magnified by the amount of time away from each other. No false pretenses. No denial. It was just pure and simple love.
Mia is also very similar to Ryan in the way that she just wants to help the world. She does the same thing as him, but she does it using science and research. She tries to bring very important and incredibly dangerous things to the attention of the entire population, showing them that other much less considered things can cause catastrophic results. Even if only one person takes notice, she has done her job. It only takes one to start a major change. She believes in her work, and works very hard, knowing that every detail is important to making a difference--and saving lives.
The chemistry between Ryan and Mia was captivating. From the moment they are reunited, to when everything completely hits the fan, there was something that just kept me connected to them. Despite the fact that they are completely in love with each other, when Mia is in trouble, Ryan is completely in military mode. He knows how to seclude his emotions from what needs to be done, which allows him to successfully save Mia. I found his ability to focus very attractive, and it made their relationship stronger. Yes, he loved her more than life itself, but if he didn't fall into his training, there was no way she was going to make it out alive. He was amazing. She was wonderful. Their relationship was beautiful.
This was a very nice start to a new series. I'm rather excited to see what Grant has in store.

This is book 1 in Alexis Grant's Men of Delta Force series. As far as the romantic suspense goes, this is a fun read. The book has an interesting take on global terrorism, focusing on the possibility of geological terrorism - what would happen if a terrorist organization targeted susceptible geological plates thus setting off massive earthquakes and destruction.
I liked that the two characters had a previous relationship. The tension arises when it is clear that Mia and Ryan had poor timing and a lack of proper closure. However, their passion for one another did not diminish and being thrown together during this crisis sparks their reunion.
Grant's alpha males (in this book and in
are emotional and vulnerable and they articulate those traits. Their introspection and reflection are refreshing and welcome in this crowded field of romantic-special ops suspense genre.

I really enjoyed this story. I liked Mia and Ryan and was glad that they got a second chance.
Mia Santiago is the lead scientist working on geological warfare. Unfortunately, she has gotten the attentions of terrorists wanting the information to use against the United States and possibly elsewhere. Ryan Mason a captain in delta force has been ordered to go to a meeting to guard scientists that might be kidnapped to use in a terrorist plot. He does not expect to see Mia there. Mia and Ryan were lovers in the past who broke up over career concerns. They still love each other and are stunned to come face to face at the science conference. Ryan has to protect Mia while getting bombarded with emotions for his lady love. Will he be able to keep her safe? Will they get back together? You have to read to find out.

for a debut novel..pretty good...
story dragged in a few places....but overall it was really good & has lead me to read the 2nd book...

Boring characters. Boring story. No suspense in a "romantic suspense". Not the worst book I have ever read, hence a 2 star rather than 1 but pretty day boring.

Loved the book ... Great mystery. Loved the characters and the background of each character. Not whole lot of sex but still a great romance.

October 10, 2016The pacing was slow and I couldn't buy into the hero waxing poetic about his long lost love for pages and pages. This was a DNF for me and I won't be continuing with the series.
