"Your strength comes from within. Your greatest weapon is your heart". ❤
This novel tells the story of a ten-year-old boy named Arthur, who lives with his grandmother and dog (Alfred). With the threat of being evicted from their home, Arthur must make the journey to find a hidden treasure to pay off his grandmother's debts. He ventures into the world of the Minimoys (tiny, fierce, warior-like people) in the hopes that they have the clues to help him find the treasure.
This book is a great adventure narrated by the brilliant Jim Dale. It's such a fun ride! This is a two-part story. The second installment, "Arthur and the Forbidden City" picks up with Arthur and a team of warriors heading into the Forbidden City to fight the biggest threat to the Minimoys.
Ten-year-old Arthur and his grandmother are still haunted by the disappearance of Arthur's grandfather, an explorer who remains missing after several years, while being hounded by the developer who intends to evict them from their house. As money runs out, Grandma is faced with selling many of the precious artifacts Grandpa found in his extensive journeys--but not before Arthur finds a clue to the treasure that Grandpa hid in the backyard. This discovery takes Arthur on an incredible adventure to the land of the Minimoys, tiny people whose kingdom just happens to be in his own backyard!
I really enjoyed the set-up of the story. Arthur is a fun kid, thoughtful, creative, sensitive and full of ingenuity. He has the cheerful optimism of a kid without being completely naive to grown-up problems and I like that. Grandma is also pretty cool; I like the relationship she and Arthur had. Very understanding and supportive! In retrospect, the beginning was rather slow-moving in terms of getting to the Minimoy adventure, but I didn't mind. What did bother me, in this part of the book, is how Grandma kept lamenting that their goods and services were stopped when they couldn't pay their bills. Of course, every story needs a villain and there is no doubt the land developer is a jerk, but I felt a little uncomfortable with how Grandma seemed to feel everyone ought to let her skate by because of the tragedy involving her husband, even though she could no longer pay the bills. While certainly there is a time and place for charity, I was frustrated by the underlying lack of understanding portrayed for the business owners who need money to support their own families and can't keep giving away their goods and services no matter how kindly they feel toward Grandma and Arthur.
The second part of this book is the Minimoy adventure, when Arthur is shrunk to the size of these tiny folk (who, it should be noted are so small they can ride on the back of a mosquito!) and needs their help in getting the treasure not only to save his own home but to save theirs since the Minimoy world would be destroyed if the land developer got his way and paved over everything to put up an apartment complex. I expected to be really excited about this part. I love stories about teeny-tiny people but I was disappointed that this seemed mostly like a regular adventure with very little emphasis on the tiny-Arthur-inhabiting-a-much-different-world aspect. I began to lose interest after various escapades involving confrontations and escapes involving enemy henchmen. I also found the budding love story between Arthur and Princess Selenia of the Minimoys to be a little too odd since Arthur is, um, ten years old but Selenia must be married in two days (though, with all the human-to-Minimoy age conversions they are the same age). Weird!
Also, maddeningly, this book ends with a MAJOR "To Be Continued" so the second book (Arthur and the Forbidden City) is not so much a sequel as a Part II.
Anyway, all in all this was an entertaining story especially with Jim Dale's narration on the audibook but I'm not sure I want to continue on with the sequel. I hate to say this, but I might just watch the movie instead.
IGGPPC Monthly Challenge April 2015 : a book adapted into an animated movie 2015 Popsugar Reading Challenge : a book at the bottom of your to-read list
I didn't expected a lot from this book, so I can't say I was really disappointed. The story itself is a classic adventure, rather entertaining, the kind of thing a experienced film-maker like Besson can do. Not much subtelty, but some efficiency.
What really bothered me though was the writing. I can't call it purple prose really, but it felt cheesy and cliché. Add to that a fair amount of gender stereotype, and you'll understand why I cringed during most of the reading.
I guess I'll read the second one though, since I already got it and the two volumes make a single story (and of course the first volume ends up with a big cliffhanger), but it will not become a favorite of mine.
Entretenido. Interesante mezcla.

Arthur's grandfather has gone missing four years ago. Arthur lives with his grandmother, mostly happy, except for wishing his parents would stop their job-hunting to come live with him again. As an evil plot emerges to take away his grandmother's land, he turns to the Minimoys, a tiny people inches tall, to warn them of the impending disaster and seek the rubies he suspects must be hidden with them.
This was a disorienting read. Arthur is supposed to be ten, but he often feels younger than that as he's careening around playing with his toys. That wouldn't be a problem, though. The bigger problem is that the plot seems determined to give a ten-year-old boy a plot better suited to a young adult novel.
He falls in love with a girl based on looking at her picture. This attitude doesn't change despite the fact that she's an enormous jerk to him the ONE DAY they are together---he's head over heels for her. Then he ends up in a bar getting drunk, depressed because she went and danced with someone else. But when she's threatened, his heroism rises up and he battles hordes of henchmen . . .
. . . Yeah.
The crazy pocketknife Betameche has is about the only saving grace. Some of the madcap actually works, especially when he's involved. But the plot's very jerky even when it isn't swinging into way-too-old territory (and did I mention there's a scene with Arthur's grandmother flirting with a police officer? Not what you'd exactly expect out of Grandma, honestly).
In short, this is a waste of time. For a good action novel featuring very tiny people, try something like Puddlejumpers by Mark Jean. I rate this book Not Recommended.
We had fun! There isn't much difference from book to film! There are even exact lines that are the same. It was just as fun to read the book as it was to watch the movie! Who doesn't want to believe that there is a world of little people living in their backyard...and if only you have all the pieces (a rug, five very large men and a magic telescope), and the right timing..you too can join them for awhile!?! I know I'd like to sleep in a Tulip, ride a bee, use a leaf as a boat down a raging mud puddle...
A fun read for all ages (then a great family movie night for a grand finale!:)
*Now...I do NOT recommend movie 2 and 3 (I don't know about book 2 yet) . . . but just stick with the first movie, it's, by far, the best!
I first saw the movie and basically anything with young Freddie Highmore is brilliant so I love the movie. I didn't realize they were books until years later and didn't know even until later than that that Jim Dale read the audio books! I love a good audio book, so I listened to Jim Dale's excellent performance and loved every second.
The movie is about both "Arthur and the Minimoys" and "Arthur and the Forbidden City", and it follows it very well, if my memory is correct. Again, I love both so very much and would recommend it to anyone who likes fairy-type beings (small beings living in the forest/garden) to give these story (movie and book versions, both) a chance. It's a cute story and worth the time.
If this name sounds familiar it may be because Besson is more famous for his movies which include The Fifth Element and La Femme Nikita. This is Besson's first novel for young people and the first in a series of books on Arthur's adventures. Arthur is a ten-year-old boy living with his grandmother. His grandfather disappeared four years earlier and now a greedy developer is trying to take the family farm. Arthur heads out to find his grandfather and save the family farm. A cute story, fantasy lovers of all ages will find it enjoyable.
The Fifth Elemen, La Femme Nikita, Joan of Arc, dll.
Arthur berniat membantu neneknya agar mereka tak kehilangan rumahnya.
Setahun kemudian, di tahun 2003 terbit sekuelnya yang berjudul Arthur and the Forbidden City.
Mami are şaizeci de ani.
This was such a fun audiobook! I watched the movie when I was a kid, but I had since forgotten everything. Listening to this book felt reminiscent of my childhood. It had a Spiderwick feel to it, but with more humor. I wish Luc Besson wrote more books like this because he could be up there with Neil Gaiman: funny, quirky, and adventurous.
Four years ago Arthur’s grandpa disappeared leaving his grandma alone to pay the bills. Unfortunately, money is tight and the evil landlord is kicking them out in three days time. Hidden somewhere in the garden are rubies that could pay off the rent and then some, but only Arthur’s grandpa knows where they are hidden. While trying to sell various artifacts that Arthur’s grandpa collected over his various travels, Arthur discovers a book with a mysterious tribe of tiny people his grandpa discovered called the Minimoys. Arthur also discovers a map and the possibility of finding those buried rubies. It is up to Arthur and his curious nature to find these Minimoys to help locate the rubies and save them from losing the house.
The characters were all fun, well developed, and colorful. I really loved the optimism and go-getter personality of Arthur. He made a great protagonist. The one character I didn’t really like was the princess. She was manipulative and mean and Arthur was so much more deserving than her beauty.
I remember as a young child making up stories similar to this when I played with my sister. We had many grand adventures. This story brought me back to those days when I so easily created the stories in my head and used improvisation to act them out. I need to get back in touch with that part of my creative side, Arthur and the Minimoys made me feel closer to that.
If you enjoy children’s books I highly recommend this one. If you read to your children then I also recommend you read this book to them. Good for almost all ages.
5 stars for entertainment 5 stars for writing 4 stars for impact 4 stars for pace 4 stars recommendation = 4.4 stars.
Luc Besson did a really good job writing this book. They made this book feel real, although it was a good book it felt short. Arthur and the Minimoys is a book where Arthur, the main character , had to save the minimoys from getting hurt from M, the antagonist of the book. Arthur then meets Selania , a minimoys princess , Arthur then sets out to save minimoys with Selania from M. Luc Besson made Arthur and the other characters feel like I was talking to them. Also he made the perspective seem real. The book has an incredible plot.
This was my first time reading a book made by Luc Besson. You can really feel what's happening and when. He did a really good explaining the charterers actions and their personality. Selania's little temper tantrums made me feel like she was a young kid thinking she knew it all, even when Arthur got jealous when Max was trying to talk to Selania, made me realize how young they are with such good personalities.
I strongly recommend this book to people who like good short books with funny Dialogue also it makes such a good book to people who like to read fiction. Everyone should enjoy this book and watch the movies.

I believe this is one of the books I received for free from an elementary school. It is an interesting concept, but I found it difficult to get through. It didn't capture my attention. I personally feel like there was too much off topic information that slowed the plot down. It is possible that the information that didn't seem to belong is relevant to the second book, but it didn't make sense in this one.
This novel is about the adventures of Arthur as he tries to save his grandmother's property by finding his grandfather that disappeared many years before. He is thrust into the miniature world of the Minimoys and joins in their struggles to defeat the evil M who may know where Arthur's grandfather is.
I like the fact that this novel shows children that they can accomplish great things, even if they feel small. You can do great things if you believe in yourself.
I bought this book after seeing the film in 2006 when I was 10 years old. Since then it had been hidden between my other yet-to-read books which formed a rather intimidating pile, even at that age. I stumbled on it again while I was cleaning out my books Marie Kondo style. Even though I was 23 years old at that time, I couldn't throw the children's book away without reading it first.
I loved reading this book it gave me the same warm and happy feelings I felt as a child while watching the movie. I was worried the story would be too childish to read as an adult but the little adult jokes, included by the author, makes it fun to read even for a (not too serious) adult.
The writing style seemed a bit off at certain parts but not too distracting. The only other "complaint" I have is the way Arthur and Selenia shamelessly cut off insect limbs. What did insects ever do to them?
