The Plane Trees
When Claudia went to meet Diego for a last drink before he left on his summer holiday, she knew she had to find a way to leave with him, for how else could she ever make him return her love? When Diego set off in his old car, Claudia was sitting beside him, but only to the first stop. How could she make him take her further, to the sunshine of Provence, the blue Mediterranean and the great spreading plane trees of the South?
This finely-wrought and delicate novel is no conventional love story. Monique Lang probes into the secret corners of a woman's mind and uncovers the violence of her desires. She raises many questions. Must love in our time always be one-sided, must it end in either unhappiness or boredom? In her own way the author gives an answer that is new and surprising, or perhaps she gives many answers.
What is certain is that this daring and unusual book will quickly gain a wide public for one of the most exciting new writers from France, a talent that has been closely compared to Sagan.
