I could be talked into a two star rating on this book. One problem is that there have been a dearth of truly great films about baseball and players. Perhaps that changes if you consider these films as a genre, then some films are greater than others, but even the best of them, from the bloated FIELD OF DREAMS to the overwrought THE NATURAL fail to achieve true greatness, though BULL DURHAM comes close.
Generally, bench films such as IT HAPPENS EVERY SPRING or THE LOU GEHRIG STORY are more fun, if lesser in their aims and achievements. In other words, the premise of this book is fatally flawed and the esteem given the films under review overblown.
Having said this, the book is written by a knowledgeable practitioner of baseball films, has some insight into those not made by him, and Edelman writes reasonably well. It is a pity he is not more realistic about what the films achieve.
