First: you proud of me? I finished the book. Okay, it doesn’t sound that impressive right now, given that you also probably know it is only 262 pages. But you know what? It was really fucking boring. And I was really fucking bored for the majority of the time I spent reading this book.

Don’t get me wrong. This book has great things going on for it. It has great character development, and it teaches you life skills…it’s just, at the risk of repeating myself, it is also really fucking boring.

拉拉 is initially portrayed as a capable, naïve, and somewhat timid girl that both you and I can relate to. She is every one of us after we graduate and begin our first job, unsure of what to expect, and how to best please her boss.

Slowly, slowly, before our very eyes, she develops. And, she does so gradually. It is to the author’s credit that I tell you honestly I can’t pinpoint an exact turning point or a quote which definitely demonstrates how much she’s developed, but I can tell you that she does grow. Her analysis of events becomes more and more logical and clearly defined, and her decisions, her ability to communicate – they all are refined with time.

As the author herself states, this book is partially intended as a guide for the reader.

Perhaps she herself endured experiences similar to that of 拉拉, or perhaps she’s just a particularly insightful person, but I really appreciate the different ways 拉拉 handles different people. Maybe it’s just because I myself am not the best at handling relations to other people (READ: I’m kind of scared of people but I also kind of judge them and I also kind of hate them) but it was eye-opening to read about the ways in which you can subtly convey a message to someone, instead of bashing them in the face with it. For example, her including a ‘story’ illustrating the SMART principles just so her prickly, overconfident manager wouldn’t feel insulted at the insinuation he doesn’t know how to use them (even though he doesn’t.)

So…why only 3 stars? Because first and foremost, this is a novel. Its purpose is to entertain. And whatever else it might have done for me, it didn’t entertain.

But maybe it’s me. My Chinese is proficient, but it is not fluent. As a result, I get confused easily. And you know what they say, a confused reader is a bored reader. There were several times when I’d read a phrase of seeming inconsequence only to have that event get blown up later. Perhaps because of my lack of grip with Chinese, I couldn’t fully appreciate the book, and, as such, found it boring.

Conclusion: 4.5 stars for the content. 2.75 stars for it being a literary work designed to entertain.

Would I recommend it? Yes, to proficient Chinese readers. Or adamant ones, who are determined to plough through it and glean the messages offered in the book. But not to anyone else.

Usually I like reading books that are different from my life. I like reading about pretty English villages, messy Italian towns, fantasy-lands full of sword fights and magic. I like to escape, even if people say it might be not the best strategy to face here and now.

This book is too near to the everyday life to afford such a luxury. The main character is a girl called Lala (I like the name, it’s easy to remember), who starts her professional life in pretty much the usual sad way of everyone else. She has some sort of education, and that’s it. No amazing qualifications that send perspective employers to queue, no connections to get her safe and well-paid position in a stable company. Somehow (the book skips this part of her journey) she goes through a number of Chinese- and Taiwanese-owned firms, until she lands in a multinational corporation. But, of course, getting in is only half the trick. Bosses are difficult, promotion questionable. Somehow I recognize the picture only too well (but her pay is being increased every year… why does it never happen to me?).

The book rather skips the “work part”: I do not think that we are ever told what exactly does the company do. Lala’s own position is in administration division (usual for every company), her job is described in rather general terms, and I can’t help feeling that it hollows the book somewhat. Another thing that may take substance from the book is that Lala is hands down good in her job. On the other hand, we are promised a success story, and it wouldn’t feel fare to the reader if Lala were successful and unqualified.

So far I’m 1/3 through with the book (not sure if I can finish it before the year runs out). It is not the easy read because of the understandable lack of the escape factor, but pretty good, anyway. Maybe one day I would even be able to use some of the tips dispersed through the book to move my career in the right direction XDD
