Tom Allen is my favorite radio personality. No matter which show he is hosting for CBC Radio Canada, I enjoy his easy style, researched and interesting stories, and mostly the sound of his voice. When I hear Tom Allen, I hear a smile.

So, on a lark I went looking to see if he'd written anything...and settled on this book (of his three), as I've daydreamed about riding the rails from coast-to-coast across Canada.

Rolling Home is a story about his young family's journey in sleeper cars and dome cars, with Tom taking a few side-jaunts by himself or with his Dad. Part history of Canadian rail, part study in traveler anecdotes, Tom plays the relate-able guide.

Light comfort reading, touching on the human condition. Rolling Home is an enjoyable palate cleanser.

A long narrative of a family's vacation from coast to coast by train. With a few historical tidbits thrown in-between, that I found very educational and entertainable. After reading the story it really makes me want to take a vacation on the train.

An enjoyable read. Like a long and windy railroad track, this book can, at times, be a bit slow and long winded. It is, however, an interesting piece of Canadiana.
