One of the easiest and most delicious ways to consume the recommended 5 to 10 servings a day of fruits and vegetables is to drink them. Packed with nutrients and low in calories, smoothies are a fast, easy and great tasting way to achieve good health. The Smoothies Bible is the most comprehensive source of information to explore and detail the health benefits of these easy-to-make drinks. Here are just some of the delicious smoothies Watermelon Wave , Mega Melon Supreme , Strawberry Blush , Flu Fighter , C-Blitz , Green Goddess , Spa Special , Spring Celebration , Spiced Carrot , Blazing Beets , Sage Relief , Flaming Antibiotic , Cajun Cocktail , Mellow Yellow , Mango Madness .
I LOVE the set-up of this book. Although I didn't actually read the whole thing (who reads a cookbook?) I would like to have my own copy around for reference.
It starts out with a cursory glance at body systems (for those of us who didn't attend Highschool? Pretty basic.) After that it has a list of health conditions, an explanation of the condition, foods that should be "maximize"d, "minimize"d or "eliminate"d for that condition and a list of helpful smoothies with their page number. Some of my favorite conditions listed: ADD & ADHD, Breastfeeding, Constipation (don't ask), flatulence (haha), low libido (extra haha), migraines, pregnancy and the common cold.
The next section covers healthy foods (fruits, vegetables and herbs) so great! There are so many veggies and herbs that I've never heard of or know little about. This section explains the actions and uses of each as well as what to look for when you buy and how to store them. She also lists each smoothie that includes that particular food and the page #. Super helpful.
The main reason I wanted to check this book out was for some help with vegetable smoothies. I can usually throw in every fruit in my house with some spinach and have a palatable smoothie. I'm a little wary of what veggies to combine, though. I'm excited to try some of these recipes.
Many smoothie recipes on-line look long and complicated and/or include items I NEVER have on-hand. At a glance most of these recipes look fairly simple. There are a few of those rare items but that's to be expected and hopefully I can spice up my cupboard a little.
Downside: she does say at one point that you shouldn't leave your produce in the fridge for more than 2 DAYS before using!!! Yeah, right. Not gonna happen. More motivation to get a good year-round garden going.
Not really kind of book you can read through in one sitting because it's mostly recipes ;) But the theoretical part is really neat and informative and the recipes themselves are so far really good. I would recommend it rather as an inspiration than a complex book about healthy eating.
Lots and lots of smoothie ideas. However my moods for smoothies fluctuate a lot so it will take me years to get through all of the recipes in this book.
We have a Nutribullet and we use it every day for our morning smoothies ... I put almond milk, frozen berries, powdered greens, baby spinach, fish oil and protein powder in mine.
The chapters are:
* Introduction - types of smoothies, smoothies as part of a healthy diet, tips for making smoothies, benefits of smoothies and equipment * Healthy body systems - features information on the seven major body systems as well as diet and lifestyle changes that will help keep these systems working as well as they can * Health conditions - what to maximize and eliminate, healing foods and healing smoothies for a variety of conditions * Healthy foods - fruits, veggies, herbs and other ingredients * Recipes - smoothies with fruit, veggies, healing herbs, dairy, dairy alternatives, hot and frozen, and dessert and cocktails * Endnotes - includes a glossary, bibliography, sources and appendices (food allergies and food combining)
There are a lot of delicious recipes that I'm going to try and the pictures make them even more tempting!
If you have a blender and you want some ideas for some healthy smoothies, you'll want to get this book.
I really only skimmed this "cook" book because I already have a smoothies book from the Vitamix that we purchased 4 years ago. We use that one almost everyday, so I was comparing this one to that. The parts I really did enjoy & inspires more of a future read, maybe purchasing the book, were the Health Conditions section and Ingredient Profiles. The Health section is great because the author's recommendations are included, with page #s, within the break-down of the condition. For instance, in my case, allergies, specifically hay fever & eczema are dissected into what to Maximize, Minimize, Eliminate, Healing foods, and smoothies that would be most useful. The Ingredients section I would need more time with. I have veggies all the time, but the trick is a yummy combination of said ingredients, esp. when I shouldn't have certain ingredients due to a recommendation from the Health section. I am slightly allergic to bananas, but have been told to eat more of them for the potassium. This book has recommendations for substituting bananas. I need more time to sufficiently sift out that knowledge. If you're like me knowing you need to change eating habits, but also need direction to do so; then this book and those like it are excellent reads
I really enjoyed this book. It gave a lot of amazing information and recipes, it also inspired a lot of different ideas to come up with. It gave all kinds of information about what each herb, vegetable, and fruit can do to help you and your body. It also gave a nice index of different ways to treat conditions but still suggests that you got to a doctor. I do recommend this book for anyone who is looking to start a new diet or lifestyle and plans on incorporating lots of smoothies into it.
Loved it. Glossary and drawings of ingredients, recommendations for certain ailments such as enlarged prostates, infertility, and even quitting smoking, and more.
Definite pick-up if you like blender drinks. Alcohol ones? Not sure, wasn't looking for those.
I purchased this book awhile ago. If you like to make smoothies, you will find this to be a great resource. There are over 300 recipes. The book was well written, with a nice section on nutritional benefits & common health concerns.
