Norman Davies
104 books537 followersIvor Norman Richard Davies FBA, FRHistS is a leading English historian of Welsh descent, noted for his publications on the history of Europe, Poland, and the United Kingdom. From 1971, Davies taught Polish history at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) of the University of London, where he was professor from 1985 to 1996. Currently, he is Supernumary Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford. Throughout his career, Davies has lectured in many countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, China, Poland, and in most of the rest of Europe as well.
The work which established Davies' reputation in the English-speaking world was God's Playground (1981), a comprehensive overview of Polish history. In Poland, the book was published officially only after the fall of communism. In 2000, Davies' Polish publishers Znak published a collection of his essays and articles under the title Smok wawelski nad Tamizą ("The Wawel Dragon on the Thames"). It is not available in English.
In 1984, Davies published Heart of Europe, a briefer history of Poland. Interestingly, the chapters are arranged in reverse chronological order. In the 1990s, Davies published Europe: A History (1996) and The Isles: A History (1999), about Europe and the islands of Great Britain and Ireland, respectively. Each book is a narrative interlarded with numerous sidepanel discussions of microtopics. In 2002, at the suggestion of the city's mayor, Bogdan Zdrojewski, Davies and his former research assistant, Roger Moorhouse, co-wrote a history of Wrocław / Breslau, a Silesian city. Titled Microcosm: Portrait of a Central European City, the book was published simultaneously in English, Polish, German and Czech. Davies also writes essays and articles for the mass media. Among others, he has worked for the BBC as well as British and American magazines and newspapers, such as The Times, The New York Review of Books and The Independent. In Poland, his articles appeared in the liberal Catholic weekly Tygodnik Powszechny. Davies' book Rising '44. The Battle for Warsaw describes the Warsaw Uprising. It was followed by Europe at War 1939-1945: No Simple Victory (2006). In 2008 Davies participated in the documentary film "The Soviet Story"
Some historians, most vocally Lucy Dawidowicz and Abraham Brumberg, object to Davies' historical treatment of the Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Poland. They accuse him of minimizing historic antisemitism, and of promoting a view that accounts of the Holocaust in international historiography largely overlook the suffering of non-Jewish Poles. Davies’s supporters contend that he gives due attention to the genocide and war crimes perpetrated by both Hitler and Stalin on Polish Jews and non-Jews. Davies himself argues that "Holocaust scholars need have no fears that rational comparisons might threaten that uniqueness. Quite the opposite." and that "...one needs to re-construct mentally the fuller picture in order to comprehend the true enormity of Poland’s wartime cataclysm, and then to say with absolute conviction ‘Never Again’." In 1986, Dawidowicz’s criticism of Davies’ historical treatment of the Holocaust was cited as a factor in a controversy at Stanford University in which Davies was denied a tenured faculty position for alleged "scientific flaws". Davies sued the university for breach of contract and defamation of character, but in 1989 the court ruled that it did not have jurisdiction in an academic matter.
Davies holds a number of honorary titles and memberships, including honorary doctorates from the universities of the Jagiellonian University (since 2003), Lublin, Gdańsk and Warsaw (since 2007), memberships in the Polish Academy of Learning (PAU) and the Academia Scientiarum et Artium Europaea, and fellowships of the British Academy and the Royal Historical Society. Ta książka jest po prostu świetna! Każdy Polak powinien ją przeczytać ... może nie byłoby tyle sporów i zacietrzewienia oraz źle pojętego i kiczowatego patriotyzm. Znajomość naszej historii bardzo pomaga zrozumieć obecne zagrożenia i problemy.

Reading this book is like a travel in time. We start when "a capital" means something different than now, when the borders are a fluid term and when the history of a place sounds more like a legend. With each chapter we come closer to the present times. Piece by piece in this huge jigsaw puzzle of the events we see what made our country what it is, the decisions made not only by Poles but also by Russians, Germans and other nations. We see statistics, charts and maps that illustrate the facts from our history. I now know the reasons that made our country become what it is, I can now understand and put one by one all the layers of events that are the foundation of today’s Poland: why our borders are where they are, why our country’s citizens are mostly Poles now and how the communism was disassembled by itself. And finally I can understand what it truly means to be Polish, what my heritage is - no less, no more.

Nie wierzę, że udało mi się skończyć!!! Czytałam ją bardzo długo. Wiele części z historii Polski było fascynujących. Niektóre fragmenty mnie nudziły.
Końcówka - czyli wiek XX fascynujàca.
Lubię spojrzenie na dzieje kraju prof. Davisa. Nie jesteśmy wybranym narodem, ale historię mamy pokręconą i to prawdziwy cid, że na mapie świata Polska jest!

Я б назвав би це „клясичною історією Польщі“, яку читати не менш корисно, пізнавально й цікаво ніж клясичну римську історію.
Для українського читача книга цікава перш за все тим, що безсторонньо розглядає історію спорідненого та сусіднього польського народу, що дуже сильно нагадує нашу. В поділах Речі Посполитої, в історії національного відродження можна знайти багато повчального для України. В історії ранньофеодальної Польщі можна побачити наскільки наша політична культура була близька в ті часи. Безпосередньо Україні та українцям, як і литовцям, білорусам (але не польським євреям) уваги майже не приділяється, що, насправді, може навіть й плюс.
Як і завжди в книгах такого об'єму (згадаймо менш популярну й більш наукову та програмну Історію України-Руси Mykhailo Hrushevsky) за браком джерел й тяглої політичної традиції дофеодальна історія перетворюється на огляд джерел, а ранньофеодальна — на збірку байок з більш менш вдалими спробами їх аналізу. Український читач побачить тут польських князів, що мали drużyna książęca в якості війська, в якості грошової одиниці користувались grzywna, одиниці лічби — kopa. Якщо згадати війни галицьких князів з боярами, яких можна порівняти зі свавільною польською шляхтою, існування в ранніх польських містах wiec, війни та союзи польських та українських князів, можна побачити наскількі наші народи споріднені, і нехай „власне польська“ політична термінологія, всі ці „шляхти“ та „сейми“ поцуплені в чехів не вводять в оману. Тим більш, що не тільки поляки зазнали чеських впливів, ті ж „табори“ прийшли до козаків від гуситів за польським посередництвом.
Пізніша історія цікава своїми прямими паралелями з українською. Якщо поділи Польщі, долю Гетьманщини чи УНР окремо можна розглядати як феномени, то погляд на Польщу очима неупередженного англійського історика дозволяє побачити тут закономірність. Взагалі, модерна та новітня історія Польщі, що мала набагато більш бурхливе політичне життя в ті часи, допомогає краще зрозуміти українську історію.

There is something in statement: Most of the best books on Polish history was written by non-Polish historians. Norman Davies, British historian, wrote few book on Polish history. This one shows history of Poland from medieval times to present. The first edition was divided for two parts: from origins to 1795 (3rd partition of Poland) and from 1795 to present.

Jeśli ktoś interesuje się historią Polski, to po prostu musi przeczytać tę książkę. Wielu jednak nie dotrwa do końca, bo cegła to niemiłosierna :)
Kilka minusów pozycji (w mojej ocenie):
1- dość pobieżnie opisany upadek PRL, dużo o polityce tego okresu, a mało o ekonomii. W książce nie pada nawet słowo o ustawie Wilczka.
2 - wszelkie cytaty są w oryginale, tłumaczenia w przypisach, to bardzo niewygodne i przy takiej objętości tekstu to dość irytujące
Poza tym świetna lektura. Dużo szersze spojrzenie niż to wyniesione ze szkoły. Fajny dystans do stosunków Polsko-Żydowskich i trafne przedstawienie historii powstania nacjonalizmu oraz komunizmu. Takie 4,5 gwiazdki. Nie tylko dla koneserów. Chyba że ktoś ma uczulenie na często nie do końca przyjemne fakty, w takim wypadku odradzam ;)

Historia Polski napisana zupełnie inaczej niż podręczniki. Mało w niej dat, autor skupia się (i słusznie!) na ciągach przyczynowo-skutkowych i ich analizie. Książka opisuje historię chronologicznie, ale poszczególne rozdziały dotyczą też specyficznych tematów, np. struktur społecznych czy dyplomacji. Autor ma na celu wyjaśnienie pewnych zachodzących zjawisk, a nie atakowanie datami poszczególnych wydarzeń.
Taki sposób przedstawienia historii Polski bardziej trafia do czytelnika, ale myślę, że docenią go przede wszystkim pasjonaci lub troszkę starsi czytelnicy, przed którymi nasza historia ma tajemnice.
Szczególnie przypadł mi gustu rozdział o rozbiorach Polski - bardzo ciekawy fragment dziejów, bezprecedensowy w dziejach Europy, moim zdaniem niedoceniony na lekcjach historii w szkole.
Taki sposób przedstawienia historii Polski bardziej trafia do czytelnika, ale myślę, że docenią go przede wszystkim pasjonaci lub troszkę starsi czytelnicy, przed którymi nasza historia ma tajemnice.
Szczególnie przypadł mi gustu rozdział o rozbiorach Polski - bardzo ciekawy fragment dziejów, bezprecedensowy w dziejach Europy, moim zdaniem niedoceniony na lekcjach historii w szkole.

Books written by Norman Davis prove that a foreign historian can have a great knowledge of Polish history and, moreover, write about it very interestingly. God's Playground is a very good synthesis of Polish history. Davis skillfully writes about the most important moments in the history of the Polish nation and can present Polish history in a wider context against the background of European events. This art is not always achieved by Polish historians, who perhaps naturally focus more on the fate of their own nation.

Fascinating journey through the history of Poland. As an outside observer, Davies is in position to discover, interpret and judge historical decisions of individuals and societies with eyes uncloded by emotions. The only thing lacking in this book is geopolitical viewpoint. For example: it seems that Davis does not make a connection between the gradual decline of polish trade in XVI century and the rise of an economic dualism sparked by the Great Geographic Discoveries.

Finally! After months of reading it's finished 😊
I love the way author keeps content fact based. No unnecessary politics or personal opinions.
Even though it's lengthy in size it's definitely worth time spent. All parts of polish history are well described.
I would call it a must read for every polish citizen.

Wspaniała podróż przez historię Polski. Bardzo długa bo aż 63 godziny audiobooka, ale warto daje ona na pewno więcej niż cała edukacja szkolna historii w szkole. Norman Davies prowadzi nas przez trudna i arcyciekawa historie naszego kraju zachowując dystans. Wspaniale są odwołania do polskiej literatury oraz cytaty. Polecam wszytkim polskim patriotom i nie tylko😀.
