When Jack Redman travels north to collect an inheritance left to him by an uncle he never knew his sole intention is to pay his last respects and then return home. But the isolated coastal village of Broken Cross enchants him and when he meets Katherine Thorne, a mutual attraction rapidly becomes something more serious. As he slowly becomes drawn into a community who value tradition and loyalty above all else, he finds that the past as well as the future can be dangerous places. Soon he discovers his long lost relative was a loner who committed suicide and that the answer to why the old man killed himself could lie in a photograph Jack found trodden into a barn floor. As a spool of betrayal and lies begins to unravel, he gradually comes to realise that Broken Cross is a place of secrets; that his good fortune might not be the blessing it seemed, and that the truth is far more terrible than he could ever have imagined.
