It's ninja vs. ninja and Sakura is caught in the middle! With the Sound Four looming close and Lee in the hospital, all three friends hurl toward an uncertain future and find that growing up sometimes means growing apart.
Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
Come on. We knew this was coming. Friends, rivals, inferiority complexes... it all leads up to this little taste of hell.
All Naruto wants is to be recognized by his best friend, and his best friend is spiralling out of control with rage at his brother Itachi who killed his entire clan only to leave Sasuke alive. If that isn't enough, Sasuke is driving himself insane with the need for enough power to defeat his insanely powerful brother... and how will he ever do that if this little moron Naruto has already surpassed him in power and skill? It's impossible!
Of course, stuck in the middle of this slice of hell between two best friends is Sakura, who loves Sasuke and can't understand why the three of them are all falling apart.
It's easy to understand things from her point of view. After all, I'm pretty sure that every reader of the series at this point is almost moved to tears feeling the same way.
All those little things that went on between them, whether goading or protective, is now turning poisonous.
It affected me greatly the first time, and this set the stage to make me bawl like a baby later, too.
Now, in full disclosure, I actually watched all of the Naruto anime. For the longest time, it happened to keep up almost perfectly with the manga, and delighted me to no end. And then... over a hundred episodes of pure filler trash... Can you imagine slogging through all that crap? It was just recycling all the angst that had developed between Naruto and Sasuke with never a hope for story development or change. *sigh* My great love of the manga died for a few years because of that load of bollocks. Fortunately, the great solidity of the manga managed to draw me back in and forget most of that trash.
It has now regained all its flavor again. Thank God.
The moment in Naruto's and Sasuke's life that everyone has been waiting for finally arrives and it is as impressive as you'd have imagined. The motivation that drives them both are completely different as one looks for recognition and the other looks for power.
Sakura's point of view brings an innocent and sad view of this confrontation as well which isn't even the only tear-inducing moment in this story arc.
Rock Lee is what really deals the finishing blow here. His life-threatening decision and a quick look at his strong will, beautiful mentorship and hardwork are what wraps this volume into a neat emotional and magnificent package.
I think I gave this one a 4 star instead of a 3 or less because of Kakashi, Tsunade and Lee. Their stories are definitely some of my favorite, with Kakashi being high in the tier. I know this may sound strange and against the mainstream but I've never really liked Sasuke. He is a character that embodies a message through which we learn about pros and cons of a life centered around revenge and hate. Naruto is a Shonen manga after all where emotions run deep and effervescent, as a main focus in teaching the teens how to deal with their angsts.
Okay, that's it, Rock Lee is awesome. I mean at first, he was kind of a dork, but a likable one. If that makes sense. Basically he's one of my favorite characters. Well there's some tension between the trio going on. Well mostly with the MC and Sasuke. The ever brooding Sasuke. Basically, this got interesting.
The story now comes to the main plot. Sasuke always considered Naruto inferior. But, when he sees Naruto fighting Gaara and beating him, he can not stand it. The thing becomes more intense when Itachi visits Naruto and him. It is like Sasuke wants to become more strong. He realizes how much weak he is against Itachi and now when he sees that even Naruto who was weaker has become strong, he can not stand it. The psychological effect is shown wonderfully of how little events were affecting Sasuke and now he has no choice but to seek Orochimaru. To become stronger.
There is a beautiful storyline of Rock Lee and Gai too. The affection between student and teacher is strong. Even though I must say that Rock Lee's character will be put away from the main storyline. His match with Gaara will be the only thing which would really stand out in the entire anime about him. The cruel fate plays its game on a hard working genius.
Naruto, Jiraiya, and Tsunade return to the village. Their first stop is to visit the hospital and heal who Tsunade can. Unfortunately for Rock Lee the news is not so great! The Sound Ninja Four make their appearance and tell Sasuke that the only way to gain new power is to abandon the village. What will Sasuke decide?
Another consistently good volume from Kishimoto! While extremely late to this series, I am enjoying it very much. My review only covers this volume and previous volumes.
Here we go. Naruto and Sasuke fighting when they get interrupted by Kakashi. Sasuke is jealous of Naruto's progress because he wants revenge. He wants revenge for the person who ruined his life. He doesn't feel strong enough. He wants to pretty much kill Naruto with the Chidori he used. Kakashi talks to him... I just want to get onto Shippuden already. After this I hate Sasuke more!
I Love it so much! These moments made my childhood. And then they made my High-school days when I rediscovered the series and got back into it again. God, so many memories. The rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke is better than any narrative rivalry I have ever read. I have seen many series try to mimic their dynamic. They all fall short of the mark.
Sasuke is such a whiny baby, but I get it. Every story needs one. But on the other hand, I have so much respect for Lee, and his relationship with Gai.
Rock lee might die. there goes my dream of of seeing him becomeing a great shonibi like Naruto. He could die from a surgy that is not his fault. Why couldn't it be choji no body cares about him he is not even important because all he does is eat and sit around he only has one jucie that i seen . Back to the subject.Sasuke is jellious because he could not take out garra but naruto can so saskue got out of his hospital bed and changled naruto to a fight on the hospital roof. Naruto foolishly acceped the changled and they went too far in there fight so sarkua try to stop the fight but she could thank god that kuakush step in and stop the fight. After that sasuke desided that he will go to orochemaru so he can get even stronger, and to reach his main goal and that is to kill his big brother itache.
Endure endless wrangling over who’s heroic, or more egregiously, what it means to be heroic in a world where good and bad appear movable points on a moral-ish continuum.
- Tsunade's first task is to cure Kakashi, Sasuke and Rock Lee. - Lee's injuries is far more serious that he must undergo a surgery that have 50-50 chance of survivality. - There's a flashback about Rock Lee and Might Guy. - Rock Lee born as a person who can't use ninjutsu. So he will be a fine ninja with only hardwork by mastering the taijutsu. - Sasuke felt inferior toward Naruto as Naruto already developing faster than he can imagine. - Sasuke challenged Naruto to fight on the hospital rooftop. - They used newly-thaught jutsu in that fight; Rasengan and Chidori - Kakashi stopped them. - Sasuke being targeted by the Sound Four, Kidomaru, Jiroubou, Sakon and Tayuya. - Sasuke lose to them. - The Sound Four try to lure Sasuke to follow Orochimaru to seek more power to kill his brother, Itachi.
Naruto Vol. 20 begins on a bittersweet note, with Tsunade taking on the role of fifth Hokage and Sasuke falling under the malevolent influence of Orochimaru, due to his desire for revenge against Itachi. Tsunade's healing powers, at the same time, can do little for the physically broken Rock Lee, who nevertheless becomes mentally reinvigorated after a long talk with his mentor, Guy.
Sasuke insists on tackling Naruto in combat, a proposition Naruto is enthusiastic about. Their bout ends with an interesting talk between Kakashi and Jiraiya. Orochimaru's scouts The Sound Ninja Four, meanwhile, have made their way to Konoha and give Sasuke a proposition he may not refuse. Vol. 20 provides some relative quiet time after the previous chapter's storm and set the stage for more intrigue.
Okay but far from great. Honestly, the big fight was a big letdown for me. I know teenagers are stupid, but there are limits to stupidity. Kishimoto seems to have enthusiastically thrown them all out the window and dedicated himself to finding increasingly less viable excuses for fights. Maybe I'm too old for this, or maybe my tolerance for glory shonen battles is limited to DB and DBZ ;)
Genuinely can't be bothered to write individual reviews for this series. I never watched this as a kid I don't have the childhood nostalgia or pull to it. It's another very popular/iconic manga series that whilst I can see why some people like it my feelings are very neutral and nothing I say is truly adding to it so....
