I went into college thinking I was ready. I had already been through the heartbreak, burned bridges I shouldn’t have, and learned all the lessons I needed. Only now I’m realizing Texas State has a lot more to teach me and Kohen Ventura is lesson one. He’s different–and I'm not sure if it's in a good way. Known notoriously for his money, friends, and play-boy attitude, I make sure to steer clear of his very path, but something about him keeps pulling me back. Realizing I’ve met my match when he doesn’t back down like most guys do, I’m left to wonder how this all ends. Will the fire between us light the darkness or will the flames destroy us both? And better yet, will we even survive?
Little Broken Pieces is book one in the Shattered Hearts Duet.
Confusing, Hot Mess of a Story About A Scary Girl with Anger Issues
This book had so many five star reviews so I thought I would give it a go…
What. A. Disappointment.
What the heck were they all, reading. because this comes across as terrible Wattpad.
Character development?…
What characters development?
Alex has only one mood.
Starts with “B” ends in “H”
When she’s not acting like a girl with permanent anger issues, she’s creating DRAMA out of NOTHING!
NOTHING!!!
Come to think of it there is a LOT of drama made out if nothing.
I mean, I know she ( Alex ) is supposed to have lots of issues, but her moods swing are out of control like she is bipolar.
Bit of character background:-
Alex and Kohen
Kohen is an Olympic Gymnastics hopeful from a rich and privileged background who helps out underprivileged kids via his fundraising efforts.
Awww….See, …He’s not just a “F’ ‘‘em, and Dump them “ F Boy.
He falls for the “drunk off her T*T’s “ Alexa when he first lays eyes on her at his own party after turning down Seggs with his hot Victoria’s Secret looking GF, Erica
What attracts him?
The very body that her Momma made Alex ashamed of.
Her small stature, thick thighs, tiny waist, soft belly, and BIG butt.
He makes it clear through his POV how much he wants to have her.
But then she gets all “ sassy, smart mouth” with him and he’s in LUURRVE 😍
Unfortunately, he isn’t alone as his “best friend ‘ Xzavien, was the first guy to approach her and show interest.
( interest at the time that was reciprocated) Also want Alex BAD.
Thus, folks, we now have a love triangle? 🤔
It’s SOO confusing… 🤷🏻♀️
As Alexa blows hot, then cold with poor X’s ( yeah, his name get abbreviated to just the letter ) affections.
Leaving him dangling as to whether he’s in with a chance or not 🤷🏻♀️?
Meanwhile, Alex starts getting hot ‘n Heavy with Kohen.
The rest of the story ping pongs around this whole premise, with the usual side characters thrown in to make life difficult for Alex and Kohen.
But!
The author still manages to get the over s€x Ed twosome between the sheets for some 🌶️ moments.
Leaving the whole story on a cliffhanger for the most stupidest flimsy reason EVER.
Which leads you to believe, if Kohen is THAT insecure about he and Alex ‘s relationship Then, perhaps they SHOULDN’T be together.
It was such a storm-in-a-teacup reason.
It baffled me.
So many aspect of this story BAFFLED ME and just didn’t make sense
The whole “ being mad at Kohen “ in the beginning for not being at his own house party, because of what happened to Alex’s friend previously at an unsupervised house party …for one.
Not because the guy who HAD the party wasn’t there, but because Alex, and particularly her friend Cora were both drunk off their faces, at said party, and Alex couldn’t help her drink ass friend.
But, apparently, this bad decision making by these two, is the fault of the guy whose house they are in…
Huh!?!?! . Thus Alex, projects her own guilt about THIS incident on to Kohen, causing an unnecessary confrontation with him
Kohen, ( who is clueless ) has such a lame reason btw.
Also,
WHO! in their right mind, runs down stair to open a front door to confront a possible THREAT , and forgets they’re only in a freckin TOWEL!!!
I found this book so hard to continue reading because I found both Alex, and Kohen, as characters confusing AF.
They were both terribly written.
Both would say one thing then do another.
Just TRYING to follow Alex’s narrative in her own POV was confusing AF!
Her mixed up thoughts, bouncing around in her head was EXHAUSTING ! and in need of some serious editing
Also, it took me awhile to realise, when Americans say “ Thick” that it means Alex was “plus size”.
But! why does the author have to keep referring it.?
Trying to shine a light on body image/ diss-morphia is one thing, and to be applauded.
However!
Bashing is over the head with it through Alex’s inferiority complex becomes mind numbing.
Was the author she projecting?
So many parts of this story just don’t make sense, in relation to the plot.
For one!
Alex discovers photos on her phone from the party in a “secret file”
But!.
Both her, and Kohen are in the photos so,….
Who took them?
Cora ( the bestie) isn’t even aware of there existence, so, it wasn’t her.
Also!
Fundraisers for the Special Olympics??? ….Really?
Could this author be trying just a little bit too hard to paint Kohen as a misunderstood man wh*re , with a heart of gold to get into Alex’s pants?
There was just so much in this story that wasn’t necessary.
What was the point of the whole, confronting the sales assistant in the store over Alex’s fundraiser outfit???
Was it just to circle back to Alex’s size/figure again?
Skinny shop assist gives curve/thick girl the stink eye???
( Outfits BTW both, in my opinion sounded damn awful! )
It didn’t contribute ANYTHING! to the story, other than to make Alex look more like a judgemental “ B” !
Also!
Is it necessary for us to get descriptions of the shopping Mall , and *Steve Madden Store, and Alex gushing over what clothing labels everyone is wearing?
( * She LOVED this store and couldn’t stop raving about it )
There is just a lot of incidental information put in the narrative that isn’t needed. It added NOTHING to the badly written story trope And could have been cut.
But, at the end of the day Alex, as the main female lead, is a mixed up hot mess with Mommy, and body issue
And we never stop read about them,
This author is clearly on a mission.
That mission is “Thick girls with body issues are beautiful and worthy of getting the hot guys,
Where as skinny, tall, pretty girls ( Cora ) get boyfriends who are abusive A hole’s
Yep!
This book is so, so, full of obvious tropes, badly written and in DESPERATE need of a good editor.
Those five star rating were clearly friends & relatives Two stars …Barely😒
Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to Issa for sharing such an incredible book. The story is so emotionally captivating that it will leave you feeling deeply moved. The ending is a real cliffhanger that will leave you speechless. Kohen's unwavering love for Alex is heartwarming, and he is definitely a character you would want as a book boyfriend. The chemistry between them is electric, and the romance scenes are wonderfully spicy.
I’m an emotional wreck! Alex has such a fierce personality. She’s been through so much and this book shows the responses to the trauma she has experienced. Kohen is such an incredible guy but he doesn’t think he’s worthy of happiness. They balance each other out and work so well together. The chemistry between them is so so hot. This was absolutely beautiful and Issa is such an incredible writer. 10/10!
I got to 29% an I couldn't finish it, I read reviews an thought this is going to be a great read, but I just got bored, you know when your reading an you feel like you can't continue but you want to see it through, yeah we'll I couldn't, so I gave up,
25% I feel like I’m reading something a high school person would write. I cringed every time I started a new chapter. I tried so hard to get into it but the writing is just not for me.
Transparency is something I take pride in and I wanted to be transparent that Google docs sucks, Mika Rayne and I as well as another proof reader completed all edits on LBP. Something happened DAY OF that reset all edits to original. We went through together to fix them all and thought we did. I myself found at least 27 (I KNOW WE FIXED) after sending to formatting for a second time.
Someone is being paid to go through and find them and this book will have to be formatted a third time! Ugh. Grateful for the help in this community but I just wanted to let you all know it wasn't due to lack of editing it was just a unforseen circumstance.
Thank you for patience and understanding and please ignore all errors in this post 😂😂
THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!! ALEX AND KOHEN have stolen my heart!!!! Alex is definitely a fierce woman and Kohen good lord where to begin.. This book really brought me through a lot of emotions I wasn’t expecting to feel.. I laughed a lot I cried and I melted several times!!! The chemistry between these two really sweated off the pages.. If I had to describe this book it was gut wrenching beautiful and I need more.. Everything fell into line and the characters pulled you in.. ISSA is an author to watch and my one click.. She’s bringing it and the world ain’t ready..
I am a bawling sobbing mess! This book brings to light a lot of trauma, and the responses that come with that trauma. Alex doesn’t think she is good enough, and Kohen doesn’t think he deserves to be happy! These 2 have experienced so much, but they work perfectly together. Until they don’t! Issa this is beautiful, and I will always be cheering you on!!
I feel like the author try to write a strong independent woman, but instead, she overdid it.
Fml is so jarring. Slut shames Judges any and everyone In the first chapter she’s already judging people based of ‘oh my trauma’ And overall the writing is so bad
Okay I barely read 1 chapter and the writing is not something I can get behind. This book is written like how I, a 17 year old girl, talk. Maybe I’ll try in the future but for now… too immature writing.
This book was everything! I’m obsessed with Kohen and I for sure related to Alex so much. I can’t wait for the second book in the duet. The writing is amazing and it’s such a quick paced book. Never a dull moment!! Bring on the next book!!
This is Issa Marie's debut into romance and you are NOT going to want to miss it!
Her characters are so realistic and relatable. They'll make you laugh, make you mad, and they're probably even gonna make you cry so have that box of tissues at the ready.
This story will suck you in and not spit you out. It'll have you begging for more! And we'll get it... as soon as she graces us with book two ;)
This is the first book that I've read from this author and let me tell you I never put it down. I stayed up all night reading it. This book really gets to you. real life problems and insecurities That a lot of people have. I feel the same way Alex does. I can't wait for the next book and hope she learns to love herself.
It was an honor to edit this book. Seeing a toxic woman instead of just the man being toxic was nice. The author did a good job showcasing how hard it can be to trust people when everyone has sh!t on them their whole life.
Alex is a girl with a big personality and trust issues. She made me want to smack sense into her at some points. She has been through hell so it’s so hard to be mad at her. Her character development though had growth. She self sabotages her relationships and doesn’t allow anyone to get close to her. Which makes you feel so hard for her. I related so much to her I was the same way for a long time even have days where I still question my man’s. Alex is a vet naive girl.
Kohen, aww my heart breaks for him. When he loves he loves with his whole heart. His momma taught him that at a young age. I couldn’t imagine what he’s growing through the pressure of trying make it to the Olympics and trying to juggle the emotional roller coaster of his relationship. While haven’t to worry about an ex girlfriend and backstabbing friends.
First off Alex is a bad ass FMC i adore her and love how she is relatable in so many ways. While reading this i felt what i was reading we all have some things we don’t like about our self but reading about alex she is a beautiful soul and learns to love herself for who SHE is and i love that . Now kohen omg talk about Mr. Mc dreamy. Ive got yet another book boyfriend to add to my list because he is just perfect and the way he treats her like a queen Yessssss!! That ending though was intense and i need answers i cant wait for the next book to come out I’m so here for it!!!
The toxicity was great in this book. The issues that Alex was dealing with on a personal level that came into play with Kohen is so relatable. I am not sure I have ever connected with a couple as much as i did with this couple. I loved how I was able to relate to everything that was occurring in the book. Can’t wait for the next book in the duet.
I was not expecting that rollercoaster ride. But this was viewing a relationship that has its up and down moments. The ending though my heart is still recovering ❤️🩹. I was not expecting that I need book 2 now!!!
This book sucked me in right off the back. Especially when she describes it as a female Hardin ummm SOLD!! This book is toxic and I'm here for it. Alex had a messy childhood and now has trust issues with everyone except her best friend. Kohen is focused on one thing and one thing only, becoming an olympic gymnast. He also has trust issues because his ex cheated on him. This book takes you on an emotional rollercoaster and destroys your heart. Why did no one tell me it ends on a cliffhanger now that's just rude!!! How am I supposed to live until December?
This book was amazing! I enjoyed the characters of Alex and Kohen, who were both complex and interesting. The secondary characters also had important roles and added to the enhancement of the story dialogue. Looking forward to book 2.
I personally loved this story! This book was a nice change from everything I have been reading so far! Issa definitely did an amazing job with these characters and I absolutely loved them!!
Alex is a fierce FMC and she takes no shhh from anybody and she also knows that she need to find her worth. She may have her struggles but she also knows how to shelter her heart from basically everything.
Kohen yeah he falls first but he also sees the walls Alex’s builds but he also knows that she is worth the fight! Kohen also is the alpha male who has a possessive side but he also doesn’t want to play games.
This book for me was a perfect example of hurt people hurt people but there is also so much more! Mind you this is only book one to a duet I already know I’m going to be obsessed with! I have some strong feelings about this book and that ending has me thinking what is to come?
This book!! Issa understood the assignment! That’s for dang sure!! Kohen and Alex are drawn together like magnets! He’s an Olympic Gymnast - she’s following her dream of dance. She’s a broken doll, words from her mother taunting her at every turn, an ex who broke her in many ways … He’s a lost child - his mother gone at a young age, and a bitter relationship with his father. There are amazing characters, great world building, and heartbreak!! If you like toxic, Alex is the sort of FMC you will love! (I did!)
This book comes with a trigger warning, please heed authors advice
This author is a first for me
This book gets off to a very great start.
Alex has a very good relationship with her best friend Cora. They complement and balance each other out. They have both had a very rough upbringing and together they do this thing called life, determined to live their best life as much as possible.
Kohen is on the fast track to making the Olympic team, it makes him more determined than ever to apply his focus after the betrayal that led to him breaking it off with Erica, his ex, but when he crosses paths with Alex, all bets are off.
Alex plays hard to get with Kohen, making him work for her attention and boy does it pay off. They both come from different worlds and it makes Alex go inside her head as to why he would want someone like her.
Alex has a lot of insecurities about her self, listening to that voice inside of her head, but with Kohen in her life, he helps her to feel good about herself, reassuring her and comforting her when it becomes difficult or overwhelming.
Xzavien and Kohen are the best of friends, yet competitive, as they get older, the dynamics between them start to change, and that change is due to Alex. Xzavien and Kohen bring out the best and worst in each other, playing each other for Alex’s affections.
Alex makes is clear to Xzavien that they are just friends, where Kohen makes it pretty clear to everyone that Alex is his, and if those blazing spicy as hell hot bedroom scenes are any indication, Kohen belongs to Alex too.
Kohen’s father doesn’t approve of his relationship with Alex, neither does Xzavien and Erica. This leads to Alex self sabotaging, with Kohen coming to pull Alex out of a precarious situation where she learns that Xzavien and Erica both played them against each other, doing everything they can to separate them, in the process truths are revealed.
And when I love you’s are exchanged, even that is not enough, for Kohen makes the ultimate sacrifice. In order for Alex to find herself, to heal, he lets her go, the heartbreaking ending though, however much it hurts them both, he knows he’s doing the right thing, for himself and for her, it’s because of his love for her that he hopes that they will find there way back to each other because they are destined to be together.
OMG! This is an exciting story where I fell in love with Kohen and can totally relate to some of the things Alex struggles within her life. Kohen is fighting for his life as an Olympic gymnast and going to college. You learn that Kohen has lost his mother and has some trust issues because an ex cheated on him. I would really like to hear more about Kohen and his mother's relationship. Kohen's relationship with his father is strained at best. He is known on campus because of his wealth and family status. Alex is struggling with her voices in her head that are from her upbringing with her mother. I would like to hear more about Cora and Alex's relationship growing up. They have been through a lot together; they hint at them losing a person in their tripod best friend group. I can tell you I hate X and Erika and Edward. I love Alex's best friend, Cora, from her young childhood. This is a great insta-love story where they fight it for as long as they can. I can't wait to see what happens in the second book. This book does end on a sort of cliffhanger where I hate Kohen's dad and some of Alex's toxic traits to sabotage anything good happening in her life.
I received this book as an ARC and leave this review willingly.
This was my most anticipated read for 2023. Going into this story I wasn’t prepared to be so immersed in it. I knew it would be good and it’s flew past my expectation.
I’ve never read a book about a female main character that stood out as much as Alex did. Alex is toxic and misunderstand. She’s gone through a lot and doesn’t trust easily. She is a force to be reckoned with. She’s who everyone wish they were friends with. That makes her so much different than most the female characters I read about.
Kohen is as stubborn as he is loyal. He can’t help but feel this pull towards Alex. He’s intrigued by her and she’s guarded and has walls as big as the Empire State Building but that doesn’t stop him from getting to know her and getting under her skin.
You’ll want to read this one for yourselves. Happy reading!
