Neither Sam nor Finny, the girl who seems to be hanging around him, are enjoying their lives in Warramar. Paladin suffers from being a young Adult novel. It has an interesting idea; people from our world being teleported to another world to begin training as Mages or paladins. For once it focused on the Paladin side of things, which was unique and AWESOME. Couldn't be more lawful good if they tried.

However, it was not fleshed out as it could have been. There was so much more history lurking there, and the story only focused on things from a very young perspective. The politics that you could see just beyond the horizon were non-existent. Whilst it didn't exactly ruin the book, it was certainly left me feeling disappointed. But I will be looking for more by this author.

The lack of description in this was a little disappointing, but Finny's character and Sam's secure sense of justice were quite grabbing. How good and evil come under the same rule, how those with power are blindsighted, unable to think of the possibility of failure or not getting their way - many themes that apply to modern society are buried in simple languages and a fantasy world. While the path to the dark and the journey of the Paladins were well described, I found myself wishing I knew more about Finny's side of the story....but then that would have spoilt the suspense. Sadly, I couldn't imagine the setting of their first journey very well; the description of the new world was somewhat lost in action.

The most irritating thing about Luckett's work is that I find it randomly, never hearing that another book has been published. This one I found when I went to a different branch of my local library, looking for something else.

It is an interesting play on the idea of the innate magic user - what if there are people whose innate talent is justice - the telling of truth, the identifying what is right. And what happens when their idea of right conflicts with what the people in power want? Oh, and then there is traveling between alternate worlds, an evil sorcerer, and a quest.

As to the story - in his late teens, Sam is looking forward to a life of drudgery, and not very happy about it. Walking home with his friend Finny one night, they encounter an old man being mugged, and Sam goes in to help. The old man then asks them to walk him home, which is fine, until Sam works out that they aren't where they should be. Finny has spent time with the old man already, so she isn't particularly stressed, but Sam just wants to go home. This turns out to be more difficult than he had imagined. This is followed by the discovery that both he and Finny have innate talents - he is a paladin, and she a fire mage. Quest ensues.

Really enjoyed this book. Fantasy but not too over the top. Lots of adventure and action. I like the idea of an alternate world where you can possess powers.
